Good and bad. The final result was good and well received. The process to get there was hard, frustrating, and inflexible. Could be a function of a couple of factors, but first they agreed to do the job, then backed out after committing, then the pricing went up by more than 50% for a result well short of the original idea. Then at the end, I felt like I got pressured into an extra charge despite already paying a lot for a very pared-back deliverable. Overall, I can't fault the creativity and craftsmanship, but the service and pricing leaves room for improvement. read more

Nate Johnson is incredible! The passion he has for the art is reflected on his work. What a pleasure working with these guys at Johnson Studios. Nate made these beautiful illuminated ice pedestals containing submerged snowflakes. These pedestals were used in a "Frozen" theme photo shoot. Thanks to his work the shoot was a hit and was posted in Glamour and Grace.(Check my uploaded pics) You definitely get the full on experience of working directly with an artist, not something you can get from other companies. You can even book him for a live performance so your guests can also share the thrill of seeing an artist in action. After looking at most of the Ice Sculpture Artists in the area, I'm absolutely thrilled we decided to go with Johnson Studios Ice Sculptures. The total experience was awesome, and we definitely will be repeat customers. From the moment I called, they were extremely helpful and professional. Nate the owner answers his own phone (a really nice touch compared to the receptionists at the other big names) and is more than willing to give suggestions, send pictures, and share his expertise. My roommates and I were looking for some "flair" for our New Year's Eve party, and decided that a couple Ice Luges would do the trick. Nate had plenty of options, ranging from as basic as you want, to elaborate as you can think. We settled on two of the more "basic" options (I say "basic", but they are really gorgeous as you can see in the pictures). Needless to say, the luges were a huge hit, and lasted through the night and were still up and running for some more festivities the next evening. All in all, Johnson Studios Ice Sculptures blew away our expectations. We came into the process as complete novices, and came away looking for excuses to use ice sculptures in all of our work and social events moving forward. If you have any reason to need an ice sculpture, these are the guys in Chicago to call. p.s. Nate gave us a tour of his studio/workshop when we picked up our sculptures. His icemaking process is unbelievable, and some of the carvings he showed us in the freezers were beyond belief (a full sized statue of himself carved in ice...insane). The guys at Johnson Studios have it all, they're kind, creative, professional, and cool (pun intended.) We had no idea what we wanted for our 2nd annual gala, we just knew we wanted it to be stellar. They helped us brainstorm some great ideas that we otherwise would not have thought possible. Their range is incredible, they proposed skylines, logos, even an ice vase! There is no limit to their vision, and, at the end of the day, they bring that something special to your event... magic. I recently had the pleasure of doing business with Nate at Johnson Studios. I must preface by saying I am not one to write reviews. However, I was blown away by Nate's professionalism and creativity. A review was needed, no doubt about it. My wife was having our baby shower and I knew I wanted to do something something special for her but couldn't figure out what. After doing a little research, I came across Nate's webpage and decided I would give him a call. I didn't really know exactly what I wanted when I called him but Nate was quick to help. After a short conversation, I gave some hints as to what my wife likes and what is important to her. I touched on the fact of how important my wife's late grandfather was to her & gave some brief details. He asked if he can have some time to brainstorm and got back to me later that night. He came up with the idea to create the logo of her grandfather's former employer, Morton Salt. Morton Salt has always reminded my wife and her family of her grandpa & how hard he worked to provide for his family. I knew she would love it. Nate provided a very fair estimate & kept in touch with me throughout the entire process. On her shower day, he came to the country club and personally made sure the sculpure was delivered and set up in perfect condition. When my wife got to the shower, the first thing she noticed was the sculpture. She was in tears. Nate has sculpted the Morton Salt logo - a little girl holding an umbrella in the rain. The ice sculpture would have been perfect the sculptor spelled my name as it was given to them in the email. I noticed it was misspelled before the guy left and told him. He went back in and was apologetic for the mistake after he verified that how he spelled my name was not the same as he had on the invoice. He could not fix it so he had to chisel my name out of the block. We had to mask the mistake with tooling. Mind you, this ice sculpture was the centerpiece of the table. The guy said they would refund me since it was his error. I emailed and left a message at the office for Dana and Kris the same day so that they were aware. Dana was very apologetic like the sculptor (Nate) and said they would refund me. I've sent several follow-up emails and got the same responses "let me check into the status of the refund". Now all of a sudden, Dana is no longer over refunds and will "check again". This issue occurred on April 27, 2019. As of today, September 4, 2019, they still have not resolved this issue. HIGHLY disappointed. This company was PAID IN ADVANCE to provide a service of which there was no reason for the mistake. Had they refunded me as they said since it was THEIR mistake, I would not be making this review. However, since they did NOT resolve the issue AS THEY SAID THEY WOULD...HERE WE ARE!!!!! I have 4 other events lined up that I was going to recommend my clients to use. Not now or ever will I use this company. Thanks but no thanks! read more
