I liked my weird wool plaid hat from here, and supporting small, local businesses. The hat is red plaid wool, totally different than what you normally think about new hats looking like. My ex tried to steal this hat because he loved it so much. Johnson's Woolen Mills sent a letter in 2015 wishing people stop trying to help Syrian refugees and instead serve US veterans, which is a false dichotomy and an uneducated option. I don't like this trend towards spreading fear and hatred towards immigrants, and anyone who has served for the United States government knows how important immigration and diversity is to our country. First, I need to mention upfront that if you look closely at any reviews of less than five stars, you'll notice that the review was left prior to the new owners stepping in. Sometime in the spring of 2023 Johnson Wollen Mills was purchased by an amazing team that cares VERY much - not only about the product, but also about the town of Johnson. However, most of all they care about the customers -- both old and new. if you talk to anybody in Johnson they're going to tell you about the new & improved Johnson Woolen Mills. It just goes to show you that you can have an amazing product but if you don't have excellent customer service and a great management team behind it, no one will shop more than once. If you've been to JWM before the summer of 2023 you will be truly shocked and amazed at how much cleaner and more spacious and relevant the store is today. And they're just getting started !! I have always been treated with the utmost kindness, respect and with a real desire to get me exactly what I want. I ordered a ton of stuff in early December and I got the box within 3 business days. This rivals Amazon's shipping & I'm a Prime Member. But it's the incredible quality that keeps me going back. I doubt I'll ever have to get a new jacket, but they have so many different products and materials - all with the same lifetime quality, that I may well find that my closet has become a Johnson Woolen Mills dressing room ! I can't say enough about the "new look". It's in the same beautiful New England town, in the same spot overlooking the Gihan river, and many of the seamstresses have been there for decades, but it is an entirely new (and GREATLY improved) vibe. I bought 2 pairs of the same wool pants (2 different sizes as I wasn't sure which size would fit) I kept one pair and returned the other within their 14 day return policy and did receive a full refund. The Good great quality product,fantastic customer service.... they actually answer the phone without having to go through an automated maze designed to get you so frustrated you hang up. The price was a bit high but the value and quality was exactly what I was looking for...Also made in the USA was a high priority for me The not quite as Good I wish they would have provided return shipping . The website is a bit antiquated.... but that also adds to the charm. And the fact that you can speak to an employee about a product lessens the importance of a website. Horrible customer service. I ordered a 150$+ shirt. They never shared a tracking number with me despite my numerous calls and only did after a lot of pressure. Parcel never arrived, was either delivered to wrong address by USPS or stolen. I contacted the Mills to find out what is their policy and they kept stringing me along to "file a claim with the post office", refusing to provide any more info and being rude. Essentially they unloaded this on me. After I had my claim refused by the post office (naturally, as the parcel according to them has been delivered), I contacted them several times through social media. They outright ghosted me! I am stuck with a 200$ bill with nothing to show for it. Go with a competitor like Duckworth, as if anything happens to your order, you are on your own. read more

This store is my favorite stop in Vermont. You can feel, smell, touch and buy the history. It's been there making these clothes since 1842 or something. The employees are very helpful, the selection is amazing and the clothes are one of a kind. They have so many great wool products at a pretty reasonable price. They also stock other great out door companies like wool rich and Filson. They have a cool scraps section too. The sale room has always had good products too. A lot of the wool is a 85 wool 15 nylon blend but some of the more classic items (the Jac shirt) are 100%. It'd be cool if more items were 100% wool. read more

Was very excited to support a made in USA business. Received a $250 shirt in the mail. It was reasonable quality, if slightly overpriced for what it is. The shirt was sized for a GIANT. I immediately put it back in the package and returned it for an exchange for a smaller shirt. The company said they shirt had the tags removed, lunch spilled on it, and dog hair...none of which are true. They would not exchange it and said I had to pay $20 to have the shirt that I don't want shipped back to me. Additionally Stacy Manosh was very rude on the phone. Overall a rotten experience and I will never ever order from them again. Only after this experience did I read their other reviews. It seems my experience was not uncommon. read more

Absolutely will NEVER buy from this company again They sent me the wrong color jacket, then when I returned it, they refused to refund me because they said it was "worn". Which is 100% false. They (the owner, Stacy) determined this "worn" stuff because I had taken the tag off and placed it in the pocket of the jacket. I did this because for a few minutes (in my living room), I considered keeping the jacket anyway. But, ultimately decided, literally 20 minutes later, that I didn't want the red and white flannel. I wanted the navy blue I had ordered initially. When I brought this to their attention, they said to send it back (at my own expense might I add, because they will not send a return packing slip, even when it was their fault), and they would refund me. Which I did. I emailed them about this, Stacy responded and said, basically, too bad! i am completely floored that a company of this size, and being around for over 100 years, and claims they are a "made in america" company, would operate this way. I will also add, when I called them to alert them of the mistake, I also purchased the jacket again because I wanted the blue jacket, and did not want to wait until the wrong color jacket Was sent back, processed, and finally the correct item being sent to me. So, it's not even like I just wanted refunded and to take my business elsewhere. And, I had purchased another jacket from them a few years ago. I WAS A REPEAT CUSTOMER, they sent the wrong item, I paid to send the wrong item back, and was treated like I did something wrong Oh, and, the owner, Stacy, told me via email that when I called them, that I told her I wore the jacket "3 or 4 times" Which is comical. Stopped in while taking a driving tour of northern Vermont. There are some great deals to be had at the factory store. Jackets, pants, accessories, bolts of fabric... We didn't have any use for most of the items (it never gets cold enough to wear any thick woolen anything in CA) but did end up purchasing a throw. I bought a flannel shirt from Johnson Woolen Mills about 2 months ago. I just tried to wear it for only the fourth time since buying it, and already three buttons fell off as I tried to fasten them, and threads are coming apart at the seams. I haven't washed it (haven't worn it enough!), or handled it roughly, or even worn it for more than a few hours at a time, and already my basically brand new SEVENTY DOLLAR shirt is falling apart after just hanging in my closet for barely 2 months. I've got more value out of my $15 old navy hoodie. So much for the touted Johnson woolen mill longevity. I called to see what we could do but was told that there was a 14 day return window and because I lost the receipt from 2 months ba so I didn't have any options. Extremely disappointed, would not recommend. Pro tip, that I should have heeded myself: bad return policy = bad product quality. Update: adding a single extra star, I've continued to wear it as a work overshirt and after several washes it hasn't fallen apart any more than it has. Not a good product or customer service experience but not the end of the world. read more

I both admire and support all companies that are willing to support our own native Vermonters first. I see no reason why we should have to give hand outs to anyone else until our own families and neighbors are well taken care of. No more Johnson wool products for my family! This company has always been a bit expensive, I've bought wool pants and various coats from them for years. WARNING! Just be sure you send everything back the same day you receive it when there is a problem, their return policy is a little beyond absurd. The last straw with this outfit is a result of the rude, lazy, and crappy customer service, particularly by one Stacy Manosh. So goodbye $250 wool pants, hello $65 Smart Wool pants (better workmanship as well), and I will never buy another wool coat from these ungrateful and offensive retailers. They must have too many customers? Ha! Oh, topping it off: Ms. Stacy Manosh is said to be the owner. Good gosh, that explains a lot about the crappy customer service! read more

177 years old but I don't think they last another 10 !! Loving the idea of locally made goods and also willing to pay for them we bought a JWM throw as a gift for a friend. Months later we decided to visit the store where we could better pick patterns etc and get two throws for our own home. $400 later I have to say I am VERY disappointed. The throws are small but we expected that however real issue is they are so thin you can actually see through them !! Much like cheap imported stuff that looks like the real deal but always has compromises, these throws look like the real thing but are so thin and see-through that they do not keep you warm at all. So much for cozying up on the couch with something warm. We will have to look to another brand for a blanket that actually works. At the store we could find no jacket or vests intended to fit slender male bodies. In general its difficult to get excited about what JWM has to offer. Best of luck in the next 177 years. read more

I concur completely with the reviewer from NY. And before anyone says anything stupid, my family has been in Vermont longer than this company has. Even though I live in Montana now, I grew up in the Green Mountains as an 8th generation Vermonter. I was extremely disappointed with the way that my "return" was handled. While I was home visiting in September, I decided to buy some wool pants and a jacket for my wife. She wasn't along this trip, so I'd have to do my best to get her size and then fly them back to Montana for her to try on. The store staff was helpful, and while I was somewhat doubtful that the garments I picked up would actually fit my petite wife, the salesgirl I dealt with assured me that if they did not work, I could just send them back in the mail. Because of my $300+ purchase, I was given a complementary wool blanket! This is awesome! I left happy and proud to be spreading Vermont products around the world. I'd recommended JWM products to almost everyone I'd spent any time in the outdoors with here in Montana... My wife tried the garments on the day after I got back, and they just didn't fit. Within a couple of days of deciding the clothes weren't going to work, I called the store in Johnson and asked to instructions on how to return them. A day or two later, I sent the clothes back via UPS at my own expense, along with a reason for the returns and the CC information for reimbursement. All good. Flash forward to today when I get a voicemail from JWM saying that they would not reimburse the purchase because I was outside of the two week return period. They would give me a store credit for the pants, but were sending the non-fitting jacket back since it was purchased off the sale rack and was therefore not eligible for a return of any kind. I argued that I had spoken to the store within the two week period, and that it takes time for a package to move 2000 miles. She didn't care. Also, as I expected, she mentioned the blanket that I had not sent back. I like the blanket. On that matter, I asked that the value of the blanket be deducted from my refund, and that the rest be refunded to me. Fair enough, right? The JWM representative refused this option as well. I closed the conversation saying that if this how they do business, then I'll spend the credit that I have for the pants, and never buy anything from them again, nor encourage anyone else to do so. She said that was fine. So, here is the sum of my experience. I made a point to drive up to Johnson to buy specifically from a Vermont company that I'd been proud of for a long time, bought $300 in merchandise and flew it across the country, informed the store within two weeks that they didn't fit and got instructions for the return, sent them back at my own expense and now, not only will I not be getting a refund, I'll be getting a $100 jacket that doesn't fit anyone. Are you guys serious? Look, I know that the company has been around since 1842, but you shouldn't run your business like it still is the mid-19th century. In today's day and age, where people buy massive amounts on the internet, a successful apparel company needs to provide the leeway for people to try things on and get them back to you without a high level of risk. I'll never do business with JWM again because of this dumbfounding approach to customer service, and irritation that I feel related to this episode, but even if I'd not had this experience, I'd be unlikely to buy from a company that held such a draconian return policy. There is just too much risk in walking out of the store with any of their stuff if they are going to fight you tooth and nail to make you keep clothes that don't fit. It's absurd. It breaks my heart as a Vermonter to say this, but do yourself a favor and go over to Woolrich, Filson or LLBean. They both have customer service apparatus designed to serve the customer and to get them into the gear that actually works for them. They even send a return shipping label to use in case there is any problem with your purchase. They each offer a guarantee on their products. JWM noticeably does not. read more

if you elect to purchase online from this company (I would advise you NOT), please be sure to note their stringent, borderline ABSURD, return policies and widely varying product sizing. I bought a wool vest from johnson for my brother for Christmas. he is an avid hunter and fisherman and frequently bought their products. he loved the appearance and weight of the vest, but the item ran extremely small (MUCH smaller than other johnson items he has in the same size) and unfortunately it did not fit. no note was made to this effect in the product description. we called the store shortly after the holiday and I was informed that I had to pay for return shipping, incremental charges for a larger size, and EVEN MORE MONEY for the new item to be shipped back to me. only for it to potentially not fit AGAIN ... which would, as you can guess, start the whole circle over. instead I elected to return the item for a refund. apparently the store has only a 14 day window for refunds which I am now outside. they offered a store credit and a suggestion to make second reference to size charts. at this point, I have NO DESIRE to support this company due to their unreasonable and inflexible policies. this is a $130 vest! i asked my brother to call about the matter in hopes he would have some success in negotiating a replacement item or new purchase. the response to his effort was nothing but condescending. in fact, the MANAGER (gail?) told him he was "A TYPICAL NEW YORKER!" to say I'm infuriated is an UNDERSTATEMENT. i will NEVER order from them again. read more

Amazing, family run woolen mill with beautifully made products. Have purchased many gifts from them, including a fabulous weekender bag and really cool outdoor picnic-type blanket (each available in a bunch of patterns and colors), and we even included several of their products on our wedding registry. Recommend them very highly-- their physical store is super cool too if you have a chance to go in person. read more

A real rip-off!! I've placed two orders with Johnson Woolen Mills. Yes--their fabric is beautiful. Expensive--but not out of line with the quality. But both times they more than doubled the shipping costs from the actual postage, and kept the difference for themselves. If they want to have a cutting or packing fee, they should just fess up and charge it, without trying to hide it under "shipping". read more
