So I was going back and forth on whether or not to leave a review. I had a decent experience at the salon, I just didn't feel like the hair stylist understood what I wanted even after explaining multiple times. I saw Jenn a couple weeks ago and told her I wanted a really ashy blonde balayage. My hair had been balayage before so we both agreed a good step would be to touch up my previous balayage and add in some low lights to break up the blonde as I'm a natural dark brunette. What irritated me is Jenn argued with me on the color I wanted. She said 1) she was worried about damage which is fair but 2) she thought a different color would suite my skin tone better. I told her if damage was a concern I'm ok going darker like a light brown that is really ashy however, she still ended up toning my hair to a yellow blonde color. It's been a couple washed and I hate how it looks. You can see at the top where she touched up the balayage it's very much so a orange color and contrasts with the previous ashy blonde color I already had in my hair. Just got my hair cut and glossed at Joi Salon with Rodolfo and I can honestly say that this was my best (ever) hair cut experience. Rodolfo understood exactly what I wanted and I am falling more and more in love with my hair every day. Everyone I spoke to at the salon was so kind and created such a positive and relaxing environment. I started coming to Joi and working with Jen about a year and half ago and every service and visit has been better than the last. My very first appointment I wasn't sure what I wanted but knew eventually I wanted to dye my hair purple. Jen had worked with me through my color journey going from a mousy light brown to this beautiful shade with variations of red and balayage along my path. Coming to Joi feels like coming in to hang out with friends because everyone on staff is so personable, kind and welcoming. I have never written a review but after my experience and call with the receptionist I feel inclined to. Do not waste your time or money here. I got a Brazilian blowout and within 3 days it faded out completely on the hairline. I went back after a week and they touched up the hair line and then two weeks after that it completely faded out of the rest of my hair. I called asking for a refund because now I have to go somewhere else to get it fixed. I told the receptionist I've gotten plenty of blowouts done before and they last much longer than 3 weeks. I said that I was at the beach and my hair was extremely frizzy from the humidity and she asked if I went in salt water and when I told her I had she said I wasn't supposed to go in salt water because it strips the treatment. She spoke in an accusatory tone like it was my fault. When I said no one told me this (not even the person who did my treatment when I told him I would be going to the beach) she rudely claimed that I should know that if I've gotten them done before. She said a refund wasn't possible because it wasn't technician error. The treatment wore out before I event went to the beach, so blaming it on salt water is a little ridiculous. The fact that I even had to come back a second time should show that it wasn't done right. She also said I can't be refunded because I already got it touched up "at no cost to you" in a tone of voice that was acting like she did me a huge favor. Obviously it was at no cost since it didn't work the first time? She said if I wanted the frizz out or straight hair I should have done a different service, even though their description of the blowout literally says: "The only smoothing treatment that can be customized to keep curl and lose frizz, or to achieve a sleek and straight result." I have had two friends who have been here and they both advised against going, but I went purely for the convenience factor since I live nearby. If you live over here I suggest going legitimately anywhere else. read more

I went to see Kelly to have a full foil and blow dry. I came in with a GiltCity so maybe this was a mistake, but the service was absolutely horrible. I came in wanting lighter hair and I came out with darker hair! The color was absolutely nothing like I had asked for and to be completely honest it was an absolute waste of 3 hours. I brought photos and was as descriptive as possible so not sure where the disconnect was. Kelly was also very rude the entire service. As if I was bothering her by just being there. When I expressed how upset I was they said I could have her redo it which was ridiculous as it clearly didn't work out the first time. Also who wants to have all those chemicals ruin their hair?? They said they would try and refund the Giltcity but ended up doing nothing. Maybe the other stylists are better but stay far away from Kelly. read more

I'm very hesitant about letting anyone cut or do anything to my hair after past bad experiences but Keri reassured every worry, asked so many questions/consulted (I went in for a cut) to get exactly what I wanted and delivered!! I was visiting Boston on Labor day weekend and desperately needed a haircut. I booked online for first available person (Brian) on a Thursday afternoon. It seems like a nice salon but it was the worst cut I've ever gotten. I asked for a short cut which was fine but it was the chunk of hair cut out of one side that was terrible. At the time, I let him style it even though it was a combover from one side to the other. Once I got home and started styling my hair the way I usually wear it, I discovered the chunk of hair missing. I took a picture but can't seem to post on this review. Thank goodness I have my own scissors because I had to do major damage control on my bangs and side to even it out to look fairly decent. I am mad every time I look in the mirror. For the $85.00 I spent on this haircut, I would have been better off going to a Supercuts. read more

You guys, I can't speak higher of Kelly at Joi Salon. I went out on a whim to Joi after browsing instagram, and I came to her with (what seemed like) a disaster haircut that happened two weeks prior. I explained how I felt to Kelly and what I was actually hoping for in my result, and she made me feel SO incredibly comfortable and confident. She walked me through how she would fix the terrible cut I had, and gave me advice on what would look best with the given circumstances. She also just has the calmest personality, which was so warm and welcoming. I will 100000%% be going back to her! read more

Booked: gloss & cut Stylist: Amanda Leaman Days since appointment: 10 The first thing I said in her chair that my main concern was my dark roots - that my light blonde hair was grown out. I was nervous about going ahead with the gloss we had booked because I felt this wouldn't affect my major concern. (Usually a chat with stylists at the beginning is a collaborative process, where we decide how to proceed together.) Amanda L. proceeded to gaslight me and say I didn't even 'have roots', and did the gloss anyway. In her defense, she mentioned she didn't want to lighten the bottom of my hair that was damaged (I agree - it's very damaged). I so shocked that she was telling me i didn't have roots ( note: I have grown out, dark brown roots against light blonde hair) that I started to question whether I was seeing my own hair accurately. The 'gloss' did nothing-- no added shine, or overall tone change. I'm not about to play along with the 'emperor has no clothes' thing - I see my hair every day and I know if it hasn't changed. She decided to book me again in ~two months~ for another *gloss*, which again, would not address the grown out roots. This highlights how much she's disregarding the root issue. (edited w updates): I messaged her privately to say I was upset with the results of the appointment (read: no change), and that my hair was still in a bad state. I sent her a picture of my hair to remind her. Her reply was --and I kid you not --- 'your [hair] looks nothing like the pictures you sent me '. So again, gaslighting. I had to go back and forth with her to confirm was indeed my hair. She ultimately maintained that she did nothing wrong - she replied that the only way to lighten my roots would be to do a balayage. I completely understand the root-y balayage look is popular, but based on previous root appointments I do *not* believe that the only way to address roots is to do another balayage (which tends to give a pretty root-y look in general) . She took advantage of the fact that I don't know a ton about hair/color to 1) convince me to do a gloss that I didn't need (and book for another!) and 2) to try to tell me some bogus argument about a balayage because she thought I wouldn't understand. I have been coming here for three years now at the recommendation of one of my best friends when I first moved to Boston from NYC. I have been seeing Amanda at Joi ever since that first visit and I couldn't be happier. She listens, she's patient, and she delivers!! I had also never in my life colored my hair until going to Amanda because I was so nervous that I would hate any color in my hair. I first did balyage with her two years ago now and I've continued to do it every 6 months or so. I literally get compliments from strangers about the color of my hair. I got married last month and had asked Amanda to do my hair and my bridesmaids the day of the wedding. All of our hair turned out perfect and held for the day/night. There was also a fire at our venue (LOL) while we were getting ready and Amanda acted not only as a hair stylist but also as a friend, calming me down. The sunny day quickly turned to wind and rain and Amanda was legit down on the rocks with me fixing my hair in between shots with my husband. She touched my hair up again before the ceremony, and again after! She was such a huge part of our day and if it weren't for her, I KNOW I wouldn't have been as happy with my hair/the pictures during our outdoor stormy wedding day. She was the real MVP. If you are on the fence about coming here- do it! To say I had a massage yesterday is an understatement. I met with massage therapist Joanne Halpin yesterday, told her the discomfort I was experiencing in my back and neck region. She asked me a few more questions, then we were ready! Now I've had many massages in my day usually the nice relaxing kind or if I do deep tissue and it usually hurts. This time I had pain and we needed to tackle it. Joanne slowly but surely was able to give me some relief. She's not shy about props either, a sash, heat over my stomach area, I was in total relax mode. Her style is magical, she truly was able to work out my knots and left me in a enchanted state. I also want to add her massage room is heavenly, perfect massage table, lots of blankets, soothing music....and so quite! Thank you Joanne, I WILL be back!! read more

I recommend Liz for waxing (brows and brazilians) to people who aren't comfortable with the whole process of getting a brazilian to those who have never had one. She's the most professional esthetician I've encountered yet. From what I can remember she's a bit more pricey than your standard $50 brazilian, but it really is hard to get one for that price these days. One problem I've had (which is really a product of her popularity) is with the time slots...there are only a couple of post 5pm appt slots (if any at all) and those are always booked. I'd suggest booking Liz on Saturdays if she's available then. Also, I dunno about you ladies, but when I get a brazilian, I expect them to get everything. EVERYTHING. I want to be doing some crazy acrobatic moves and if I'm not, then frankly there's no way they can get it all. Well....let me just say....my knees never touched my chin. The staff are great. I see Edna for my hair--not only is she a kick-ass person, she also does great long layered cuts and I completely trust her suggestions for both new styles and color. I went to Liz Johnston here for all sorts of waxing and facials until she recently left to start her own business (I found her! she's moved down the street-- check out solacewax.com). Melissa does a fabulous job with nails and they always have a good selection of color, including trendy colors. If you live in the area I would absolutely recommend Joi for any service. I just received a facial from Liz and it was great. The most impressive part of the facial was that the extractions were fairly painless. If you've ever gotten a facial, you know that's not often the case. The salon was clean, everyone was friendly, and punctual. I went in for my first facial yesterday with Jill, and have to admit that I might be hooked. Jill was friendly and really great. She asked me about skincare routine and listened to any questions I had. The facial she gave me was amazing despite some pain during the extraction process which was expected and normal. When I got home and inspected my face more closely, I could definitely see a difference. When I washed up before bed last night, my skin was soft and fresh and noticeably better from before the facial. This was my second time at Joi Salon (first was a massage) and I have been happy during both visits. The rooms are clean and quiet with nice calming scents and music. I have had my hair done at Joi several times and I'm pretty convinced I will go there again soon. When it comes to my hair I'm definitely not the easiest customer to work with; I'm quite conservative - I like things to be done in a certain way, and I will not let the hairstylist make me her/his guinea pig. If I ask for a trim that's exactly what I mean. Lindsey, who recently colored and cut my hair did a really great job. She made great suggestions on the cut, did awesome job highlighting my hair. I have had mixed results here with my hair coloring (one person I loved, another person I had I hated the color), but I have always had excellent haircuts and I have to give a 5 for Liz and her waxing! Liz is such a great person for making you feel relaxed. She is very conscientious about keeping your comfortable and she does all the little things that need to be done to reduce/deal with discomfort (such as pressing with her hand right after pulling the strip - sadly, not everyone does this - and warning you when she's about the pull a particularly sensitive spot). I also find her very friendly and caring about how you feel with the results. Also, to Liz and Joi's credit, the room where they do the waxing is very clean and comfortable. [I went to a place in Charlestown once where the waxing room was this tiny little space with an itty bitty sink. I felt so unclean afterwards and never went back. ] The receptionists at Joi are quite welcoming and professional too. It feels like a nice, high quality salon. The biggest down side is that the park around Joi Salon is horrible. I once got a $50 ticket for being at the meter to 6:10 (after 6 it becomes resident parking only). Every other time I'm often stuck parking at the ~$10 lot across the street from the salon. read more

They take all necessary precautions including limiting number of customers, wearing facemasks, and utilizing plastic coverings between chairs/stations as well as sanitizing after each cut. 1st time here. Loved it. Friendly staff. Very clean facilities. Jill was very professional. Unfortunately, I didn't tell her that the wax was a little too hot and I got a very mild burn. My fault for not saying anything. Despite that, the waxing was on the less uncomfortable side which made me happy. I would definitely still go back, but just speak up next time. This place is fantastic! It's super clean and professional looking. The girl at the desk even charged my phone for me while I had a fantastic wax with Jill. I first tried a brazillian wax elsewhere years ago and it was so terrible I never tried again. I was headed on vacation and really wanted to get a great wax so a friend recommended Joi (she's been going there for years). I got my wax with Jill and she was great! She makes you feel super comfortable, we were just chatting and laughing through the whole thing which is great since it's not the most comfortable thing in the world. It wasn't super painful though, mostly hard wax and some strips, it really didn't hurt too much and was over pretty quickly. I definitely recommend Joi and Jill in particular, the wax looked great, I had a fantastic vacation and I will definitely be back! read more

About this time last year I received word that the stylist I'd had for literally half my life abandoned ship. I was sporting a full-on pixie at the time and needed a haircut rather soon. Hello, panic! Since my former stylist was way out in the suburbs, I viewed it as an opportunity to find a closer one, and maybe one that didn't have as many elderly clients. Oh, the possibilities are endless. After poring over numerous salon reviews I bit the bullet and gave Joi Salon a ring based on its positive reviews and location. I was paired with Briana and started counting the days until my first appointment. Full disclosure: I find fancy salons rather intimidating and I honestly had never set foot inside one. However, I was warmly greeted upon entering and was immediately put at ease when I met Briana. She is an absolute sweetheart! What I loved about that haircut (and all subsequent ones) was that it wasn't a passive experience where I sat quietly and she cut. During that first appointment we chatted about my current hairstyle, what annoyed me about it, and what I'd like to change. And even during the cutting process there was constant dialogue and she was more than happy to take more off the top/back, add more texture, or whatever I requested. As a result, every single haircut was a success and I always received many compliments. Joi Salon itself is a bright and pleasant albeit bustling little salon. All six closely-spaced stations were always occupied, which makes it a tad noisy and chaotic if you're looking for a more relaxed salon. Everyone I encountered was always courteous from the front desk ladies to the other stylists. Their prices are on par with those of other salons in the area, with Briana's price being on the lower end. ($60 which then jumped to $65 earlier this year.) While I loved my pixie, I'm in the process of growing it out so I haven't been to Joi in several months. However, I thought it was time to give a "shout out" to Briana and her amazing work. I highly recommend making an appointment with her, especially if you're looking to go short. You'll be in good hands. read more
