CASH ONLY BUSINESS I wanted to try the food since I'm staying around the corner and it's the oldest African-American establishment (1910). I sniffed the air as I walked in trying to get a preview of what the food would be like. I was surprised that I didn't smell anything, not even when I walked inside. Mr. Jones appears to be an old school man focused on handling his business. There was no small talk, yet he exuded warmth. I ordered 2 sandwiches with slaw. They were prepped quickly. I walked the 7 minutes back home, excited to try the food. I was disappointed to see that there was no barbecue sauce. I guess it's more accurate to say I was disappointed that my expectations of seeing barbecue sauce covering the meat weren't met. I took a bite of the sandwich and it was ok. I wasn't impressed. I was still holding on to what I thought it should be like. The coleslaw elevated the taste. I went back to the diner a couple hours later and asked for sauce. He remembered me coming in. I didn't want the large bottle they sold and he found something to pour some in. BE AWARE, there may typically be a charge for a side of sauce, which is understandable to make business dollars stretch. I did not have to pay, thankfully since I don't carry cash. I was excited to pour the sauce all over the sandwich. The sauce is thin and tangy. It complements the slaw perfectly! I enjoyed the sandwich once I add the sauce. I can see why it gets rave reviews. There is indoor seating and memorabilia to peruse. I'm not sure if there are public restrooms or wifi. I love that there isn't a huge menu to choose from. You have two things to decide on: slaw and sauce. If you're a sauce person, REMEMBER to ask for it before you leave, as it is not on the sandwich. Well I'll keep it short and simple. Decided to take the lil road trip from LR to Jones BBQ on recommendation of my Boss who's a LRs native. I went a little overboard and decided to get some Pulled Pork by itself then a sandwich without the slaw and one with. The pulled pork by itself was delicious very original and somewhat different to other Qs I have tried before, the sandwich without the slaw was good, and in my honest opinion I wasn't so blown away by it until I tried the sandwich with the cole slaw now that's what I'm taking about the mixture works like a charm and I can see why it won the JB award hands down. Well, well, well,..... I have made a tragic mistake, as I realized I never reviewed Jones Bar-B-Q Diner... and for that I am sorry. (This is a TLDR type, but if you invest the time you won't be disappointed.) I posted photos, and I didn't post a review... shame on me, and how dare I?! SO, my darling, my wife, my Sassy Sally, found an article about amazing, James Beard Award Winning, pulled pork in Arkansas. Let's be clear... Arkansas is the place to #gethcusome pulled pork... don't be fooled by liars and tricksters trying to "sell you water by the river." They have beauty and wonder, and when it comes to the contiguous states Arkansas is your go to for Pulled Pork. This was a level above the rest, sets the bar for what you should be strive to attain in your craft, worth the drive, and there's a reason that this man, and family, were able to garner such a great achievement. This man has been honing his methods for years to produce consistent and delicious pulled pork. I'd say that he's put the same amount of time and into his pulled pork as a master level sushi chef. Refining basic elements until they all come together to create the perfect representation of what pulled pork can and should be. Now that I've praised let's delve into the rest. Arrive Early... we made it to the Diner at 0850 and we just made it. People had already been served and gone. We were able to have our sandwiches in the small common eating area, and as I said it was simple. Pulled pork, on white bread, with some sauce, and that is all you get. But, it's all you need. We took a platter away to share with friends at a craw fish boil later, and it was still good. Just not that piping fresh from the pit goodness we were able to have at the restaurant. (Because they cook that pig at the pit over night while you all are sleeping to give you the freshest product that morning.) Mr. Jones was kind enough to pose with his award, and offer us the opportunity to again record history. It's amazing that a man from a small town in Arkansas was able to attain such feats with hard work, dedication, and a refined method for good food. We talked for a moment, like we do, and we even found out that it was he and the wife's first real vacation when they were whisked away to the event. Going to NY to be recognized and coupling that with yet another awesome moment in your life. This visit left a mark, in that good way, which is why I remember most of the details till this day. I'm thankful for the experience, and I'm glad I was able to interact with a man who's made history in his own right. More people should know about Jones Bar-B-Q Diner, and make the effort to stop into Marianna Arkansas for his pulled pork. read more

Got their just after noon, smelled great outside, no one there. Another person showed up, they had called ahead, they were told to come on from Lonoke. He called the owners, was told that they had sold out before noon. Once they sell out whatever they make that day, they lock up and go home. The slaw is perfect in proportion to the meat. $3.50 for a sandwich. 70 cents for a pop Tiny place amid other homes in a quiet neighborhood. Let me say this clearly: This is the best barbecue I have ever eaten. Period. I don't say this lightly. I live in Memphis. I regularly eat at Cozy Corner, Paynes, Central, BBQ Shop, and all those other hallowed halls of Memphis smoked meats. Each of those places is damn good. Jones is better. A few of the negative reviews on this page are because Jones was closed when the customers arrived. Yes, Jones closes when they run out of pork. If a restaurant runs out of food (and in the middle of small town Marianna, AR no less) that should probably tell you that the food is phenomenal. They run out for a reason. The food is incredibly simple. Jones sells one thing and one thing only: chopped pork. You can get it by the pound or by the sandwich, and with or without slaw. That's it. Those are your only choices. The bread for the sandwich is Wonderbread and it's perfect. It's soft and it soaks ups the sauce and it let's the meat do the talking. The sauce is mild as well. It's vinegar-based as opposed to your typical tomato base. I love a good tomato-based 'cue, but the flavor often overwhelms the the meat. Not so with Jones. The mild but delicious vinegar sauce allows you to really taste all the smoke that went into the oh-so-tender pork. Once prepared, the sandwich gets wrapped in tinfoil, which causes the sandwich to steam and the flavors to meld together into something so magical and perfect that it just doesn't seem possible considering the humble ingredients from which the sandwich was assembled. This sandwich is worth any amount of driving. Just get there early because they do indeed close up shop once the meat is gone. And if they're closed when you show up, don't pout and leave a bad review. Learn your lesson and come earlier next time. Because with pork this good, we're all living on Jones' time. read more

James Beard award winning pulled pork. I could end my review there and that should be enough but... This is a tiny two table "diner" in Marianna AR. Wifey and I took the 30 minute detour off highway 40 on our trip from Memphis to OK city (part of a spectacular coast to coast road trip) to stop here and try the goods. We were not disappointed. He sells one thing: pulled pork. He does one thing better than all others: pulled pork. Got the pulled pork sandwich with cole slaw on white bread. No bbq sauce, just a dash of vinegar sauce and the delicious smoke flavor. I ate two in the lot (they have 2 tables inside but we had our dog with us) wife ate one, then we bought 3 more for the road. It was that good. Mr. Jones is super nice too! Check the inter-web for the news stories about this place. Don't miss it. Pro tip: get there early. He opens at 7am and closes when they sell out. This can be as early as 10am on weekends. There's really not much point in reviewing this place -- if you need me to tell you that Jones' is tops, then a Yelp review ain't gonna help you -- but what really made it special is the guys who work there were super friendly and even let us go out back to check out the pit up close: it was like going backstage at a holy cathedral and being allowed to examine the altar up close. The pulled pork is good 'n' all but the sauce he puts on there is absolutely divine. A chorus of angels sings when dude sauces that pork. The bossman does the right thing and serves it up on plain, doughy, chewy white bread like God himself intended. In the end, I devoured three -- THREE -- sandwiches before my spouse could drag me out of there. If there was a book called "Pits To Hit Before You Die," Jones' would easily make the top five. read more

Mr. Jones was nice enough to stop in the middle of his work & take a picture with us. After several years of failed attempts ("we close when we run out of meat" is probably the most oft uttered refrain there) I was able to stop by about 9:30 during a trip from Chicago to visit family. It worked! Meat happened! So very friendly. It's a local gathering spot & the community was out & people were very friendly & it all made me homesick for a place that's gone now. Thanks guys. I had heard so much about Jones Bar-B-Q for more years than I care to remember. I felt for him after the fire destroyed the cooking area, but was delighted to see the community rally and help him re-build and re-build quickly. This time when I was in the area, I made it a point to stop in and give it a try. As a matter of fact, in a 3 week span I picked up Bar-B-Q twice. Let me first say the prices are very fair and reasonable. Currently $4 dollars for a sandwich with slaw (on Wonder bread). On the second visit I got a pound of the meat and a pint of the slaw, which with tax only totaled $11.50 which is SUPER! Mr. Jones waited on me himself both times and was always pleasant. I made it a point to tell him thank you and that I appreciated him and he did the same on both visits. The one drawback to this place is the fact that you need to come early to get the food. When he runs out for that day he closes the store, and apparently he does run out quickly and regularly. The hours say 7:30am to 2pm, but I got there at 10:50am on a Tuesday and he had already closed for the day. A young lady also arrived at the same time and had driven up from Jackson, Mississippi specifically for the Bar-B-Q only to be disappointed with a closed restaurant. She indicated this had now happened to her twice. So for those driving great distances, if you simply want a road trip and some very reasonable Bar-B-Q, knock yourself out, but get there early. However, if you are driving a great distance to sample what you hope to be the best Bar-B-Q you have ever eaten you will likely be disappointed. As I said earlier, it's good, the prices are more than fair, and Mr. Jones seems to be a very nice person, but the Bar-B-Q doesn't hit that Great category. There are many places in the Memphis area that serve equal or better, but at a higher price. But it is a great experience, and you will see the National and Prestigious Award Mr. Jones won a few years back hanging on a nail above the window where you place your order. So I hope you enjoy your visit and your Bar-B-Q if you decide to give it a try. read more

I had a sandwich and water here. I hate to give it a 3 stars, but here we go. Value is great. $3.50 for a sandwich, how can you complain? Service was fine, no issues. I just wasn't a huge fan of the sandwich or sauce. Was expecting big things due to the prestigious award. I ate it there and found the sandwich to be a bit soggy. Bread is wonder bread, pork tasted great, slaw was basic slaw. Sauce I found to be a bit too runny for my taste. Overall, I believe that I prefer pork sandwiches from many places in Memphis over this. Cool history though and certainly a unique experience. So would recommend it to those who are interested in a James Beard award winner, however I certainly wouldn't travel 20'' each way from highway 40 like I did seeking this spot out.
