The acoustics in Jones Hall are fantastic! I've been here for various symphony concerts, and I've had seats pretty much all over the concert hall; each time, I've enjoyed the experience! I was even here for a Radiolab event a couple of years ago, and again, no matter where you are in Jones Hall, your ears are in for a treat! I, now, associate Jones Hall as a place of peace and tranquility. I have yet to have a poor experience here. AND, there's food offered during intermission now instead of just drinks. Where's the bathroom? Oh it's way down at the bottom of those stairs? And the elevator moves like a snail? You want me to walk all the way up around and down to get to my seats that I can see from here? The seats are super uncomfortable. Man, this place just isn't for me. I think it might be time to raze this place and build a new venue. I've been here several times for everything from symphonies to Chinese acrobats. When we were there for the Chinese Acrobats, we felt like our close seats were worse than far away because the stage was so high. Time to get a new hall, Mr. Jones. It's time. read more

Parking for Jones Hall is $12 though you can find cheaper parking for $10 (cash only) at some Irish restaurant nearby. Since it was out first visit, the boyfriend and I coughed up $12. We were able to find the door to Jones Hall and followed the sign stating that the box office was downstairs. While we waited for the ticket tearing person to get through the line of customers to claim our tickets. When it was finally our turn, we were told that the box office was actually upstairs, which confirmed our initial suspicion. Luckily, the A-M last name line had 2 parties in it while the N-Z line was all the way to the door, which is what happens when you decide to split the last names down the middle instead of using some judgment. By the time we get inside after all the running around, we had 10 minutes until showtime. The ladies inside kept rushing everyone to make their way to their seats, but a lot of us needed to wait for the elevator to take us up 4 stories. We were all worried since they kept repeating that the doors close promptly at 2PM. The boyfriend and I quick found our seats once we made our way in the door, but were quickly disappointed to find that doors close at 2PM doesn't mean a thing. They kept letting people in from all the doors at least 15 minutes after the show had started. The people here had little to no courtesy for the show as they kept getting up out of their seats, roaming the aisles, and even using their iPhone flashlights during the show as they walked around. The show had 2 intermissions that people could wait for though I can almost understand why people would choose to leave in the middle of the show instead of waiting to use the restroom. During the first intermissions, I rushed out of the theater to be first in line for the ladies restroom. We received the 10 minute warning when I was 4th in the line, so I hurried along and made it back to my seat in time. As I was walking back, I looked tragically at the line of 40-50 people still waiting to go. read more

Today was our third time here. Today we came to see the Houston Symphony's performance of Mahler's Resurrection. (Magnificent!) We attended a rehearsal here last week, and had orchestra seats, which were good. But when you sit on the orchestra level your view is on the same level, so you can't quite see the sections in the rear. Today we got box seats in row 5 (grand tier level). They were primo - with a great view of all sections of the orchestra. Everything is plush, velvet, swiveling seats, which had a bit more space between them. You don't feel like you're right on top of the people next to you. The lobby is huge, and as you enter and ascend the first set of stairs, it opens into a large area with tables, chairs, a full bar and food concession area featuring sandwiches, salads, and cheese/fruit trays (very sophisticated). And of course wine and drinky-poos! I would definitely recommend this venue and of course we will be back! read more

In my youth I had one particular friend who played a wind instrument. She was passionate about it and practiced all the time. I'd come over and she would be listening to elaborate musical compositions and I just wanted to ride our bikes. Of all the theaters in Houston I frequent the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts aka TUTS the most. I love musicals over and above any other of my friends my age. It's about the only thing my dad let me watch growing up. I wasn't allowed to watch horror films. Jaws, was the scariest movie I ever saw as a child. I also enjoy the occasional show at Alley Theater and the Wortham Theater. Jones hall had not really spiked my interest, maybe because I never actually looked into their calendar of shows. Friday, I was honored with an invite and why I was thought of for this is really beyond me. I couldn't refuse after I heard it was the Best of John Williams. Something fun!? How exciting all the music to some of my favorite movies. Music to my ears! I will forever enjoy my blockbuster movies to a new level. It was a tremendously remarkable show. Impressive how many people it takes to make such beautiful works. I am in awe. I can honestly say I will enjoy this more often. Seating... yes, it's shaped oddly. Jones Hall is beautiful but the design doesn't offer the best seating. Does that matter? Not in my opinion. You are there to listen and you can enjoy it no matter where you are seated. Heighten you listening skills. Free parking on the street is hard to come by, as it's only free after 6 on weekdays and on weekends. Some days all the stars align perfectly and I miraculously find a spot, others I make no fuss, just park in the nearest parking lot for $20 bucks or less. Don't be late. I know Wortham Center doesn't allow you in once the doors close. Yes, you paid, and to bad. Jones Hall allowed a few late comers, which was annoying as heck but I am not sure that is the norm. Attire: Usually it's dressiest as possible but ladies wear what makes you feel good! Nobody is judgy and if they are their problem not yours. If you don't think Orchestra music is your type of music I suggest you come for a Pop Symphony. You will not regret it. read more

I have loved every performance I've seen at Jones Hall, it has been a staple in my family since we moved to Texas. Always quality shows, especially the Christmas concert for children, my niece's face lit up when the music starts. But I'm writing this for the incredible quality of customer service we just received. My sister and I got really sick and we knew the chances were slim of changing our tickets to a different performance but we thought we would give it a try. For the most part, this venue is simply spectacular. Located in the theater district downtown, it's easily accessible if you're coming off I-10, I-45, or US59, and even though there's been a lot of construction in the area, traffic is never quite too bad. The Symphony performances are always impressive. I've been here for a handful of shows, ranging from the family-friendly Fiesta to the culturally in tune shows during Hispanic Heritage Month to their movie nights where the orchestra plays the score during Harry Potter, Jurassic Park, Star Wars, etc. There are some minor knocks on the place. Parking is limited, but there is an underground garage that typically costs much more than necessary to get a parking spot in. Also, it's worth splurging for the orchestra or mezzanine seats, as some of the upper level seats can have a partially obstructed view. The staff is generally polite and extremely helpful but sometimes the staff can be very rude, like one time when an usher refused to give me a program because he presumed I was with someone who had already taken one from him and they were "running low" (there was a stack of several hundred sitting unused after the show). Altogether, I highly recommend coming to shows over here. I've never had a bad experience with the show itself. read more

We went to Jones Hall to see Swan Lake for a matinee show, the show was amazing and the venue is definitely a classic venue in downtown Houston. My only gripes are with parking, as always and the process of getting in for the show. Overall I had a good time, though they wouldn't seat us until 15 minutes into the show since we got there right at show time, we weren't late. But after that uncomfortable wait all was well. They really should give people a bit more room for guests to be seated in terms of time. read more

My sister booked us tickets to the Harry Potter Symphony show. I was really excited for this. It was a sold out show too. Underground parking near the performance was ample, but we did have to pay $12 for event parking. Boo. We sat all the way in the front row, since they were the most affordable seats in the house. Even going back a couple of rows in seating increased the price of the tickets by fourfold. But, with the lower price comes less comfort. The seats were pretty cramped. In general, the venue inside Jones Hall was also quite stuffy and warm. Forget going to the restroom here, since they were far from the theatre. This was inconvenient. Other than that, I enjoyed the symphony playing all the magical music from the Chamber of Secrets Harry Potter movie. read more

So, it's the sound that knocks this venue down to three stars for me. Some theatres just aren't built for sound (golly, I'm looking at you Bass Concert Hall in ATX). Jones can be hit or miss depending on where you sit. Throughout my life, I've seen some great performances here. Throughout my youth, I had some crazy dreams about being stuck in the middle of the orchestra level waiting and waiting and waiting and waiting for our turn to leave. So many schools on field trip day. So many busses. Nightmares. I actually like the exterior of Jones Hall much more than the interior. Wow - surprised with so many three star reviews. Not that three stars is bad ... but c'mon. This is an awesome space. I've been here enough times to pretty much know how to navigate the building. From the restrooms - which seem almost secretive, but there are so many of 'em - to the multiple bars and so many ushers, the place really isn't all that complicated. So what makes Jones Hall awesome? *Ticketing. They have multiple box offices open. Will-call can be a bia, but that's pretty much every will-call window. I rec having your tickets mailed to you. *And getting through the doors and through ticketing is a breeze. There are so many ticket "scanner people" (whatever they're called); ushers to lead you the way ... so don't feel overwhelmed by all the doors, the stairs, etc. *The acoustics, the layout - every show I've been to has been crystal clear. *Seats are comfy! Whatchu talkin' about, peeps? They're cushioned, they recline, you have plenty of leg and arm/elbow room. And, I've never had a bad seat in the house. The sound and view from just around anywhere is awesome. Well, I wouldn't sit *too* close to the orchestra, because the incline is lower so shorties might have a problem with people's heads in the way. The middle to farther back is steaper, so you will actually have a better view. I rec catching a performance here. Houston is lucky to have you Jones Hall. :) read more

I love coming here! Being practically a native Houstonian I have been a regular patron of the arts here in Houston and I have to say I think we have one of the best theatre arts districts in the country! Jones Hall has been here forever and is a great place to experience the symphony or concert. We are attending an event for the Houston Symphony Family Concert series with the theme being Ghostbuster and Ghouls on this Halloween day and we are just waiting for the start of the program; so I thought I'd jot down a few of my thoughts. We are sitting in the orchestra section of the hall and it's a great spot to experience a show! The facilities are fairly good here but my only complaint is a trip to the restroom can be rather daunting. So make sure you give yourself enough time before the show starts! The parking is about $10 in the lot right next to the hall and this I would recommend as it connects directly to the hall via a tunnel so if it's ever raining like it is today you avoid getting soaked! It is an easy in and out! Ah...the ghouls and ghosts are congregating! Will continue review after the show! What a great show! Lots of great energy and a fantastic dance troupe! Later in we discovered that one of the dancers on stage was the daughter of a good friend of mine from college who we bumped into afterwards! The music was fabulous and they had all the kids who dressed up in costume march across the stage which was so much fun for the kids! What a great way to spend Halloween! read more

Beautiful theatre, but be aware that there is an issue with bathrooms and we had to go outside to a trailer to use the restroom. Kind of like a somewhat nice outhouse. Doesn't evoke feelings of a lovely evening at the symphony. Also, an employee told me I could bring bottled water into the performance, but the door attendant said I could not. I've been a symphony subscriber for a few years now and Jones Hall is a great location. Built in '66 and clad in Italian Marble this MCM building spans an entire city block and would cost upwards of $60M in construction today. I don't really care for the pops symphony schedule but the classical is quite good with a descent selection every year. Subscriptions are super cheap if you subscribe early! read more

I've attended numerous performances here throughout my life. I couldn't possibly list them all (I think I even came here for an elementary school field trip), but most recently I saw David Sedaris here. Before that, an Alvin Ailey production. Maybe a Houston Ballet gala too? It all tends to blur together after awhile, I blame the garish red carpeting. It is psychologically jarring/scarring. Yeah I know, what the other color would it be? Anyway, it's a pretty massive venue for its purported artsy purposes. The stairs are never-ending if you end up in the "nosebleed" section. One of the attendants actually expressly warned us about the trek, cautioning that it was a tiring undertaking, but we were being troopers that day - so we made it all the way to the top without slowing down/stopping/passing out/dying. Good for us! The restrooms are usually decently maintained, but ladies, if you can bear to - duck out during the performance to take care of business, otherwise you will be waiting quite awhile in the intermission/post-performance lines. Bah. I don't really know what else to say. It's an all right, good for what it is. Tada. read more

Huge venue, maybe a little too big, seats are uncomfortable, some obstructive views, lots of stairs to walk up and down, the lines can be crazy at intermission. I came here to see the Houston Symphony presents Pink Martini, my tickets were in the Mezzanine level. A bit high to see anything going on the stage, but the acoustics are good. You are there to hear what's going on, but I am a visual person. There are 2 LCD screens so that helps some. I did enjoy the lighting. Overall, it's still worth coming to see the Houston Symphony since they are amazing, if you can afford it sit below the Mezzanine level and skip the concessions. Don't let a bad venue ruin an awesome experience with the symphony. Look past the old venue and enjoy what's actually on stage. read more

I came here for "It Gets Better". It was my first time here. It's beautiful on the outside. You have a small seating area in front of the entrance. Once you go in, it's carpeted. On the second level outside of the theatre, there is a bar and an area with tables where you can dine prior to the show. The food was decent (panini, pasta, and salad). I ordered a panini and I had to admit, I was pretty impressed. The theatre seats are comfortable. I had great view from the orchestra section. They also have balcony seating as well. The stage is smaller than what I'm used to but it was adequate for the performance that I saw. I did notice that it had a peculiar smell to it, but I think you'll get use to it after 15 minutes. I enjoyed the performance and I look forward to attending more performances in the future! read more

I have been to many performances here and have always had a good time. The sound is good and there's not really a bad seat in the house. It could use some renovating. The seats are looking worn and don't get me started on the bathrooms! You practically need a map or GPS to locate them. It's ridiculously inconvenient. I recently attended America's Test Kitchen Live. Prior to the show they had a very entertaining performance by Percussion One. What a talented group! They did a clever percussive based show with a kitchen theme. America's Test Kitchen was interesting. I wasn't sure what to expect seeing a single person instead of a show, but it was interactive and fun. I look forward to attending more shows this season. read more

However, Jones Hall is a little outdated for symphony or SPA performances and it is hard to find a good seat as another reviewer said. There is little to entice someone to spend the money to see a performance here when there are so many other great stages in the Houston Theatre District. With its long history, Jones Hall for the Performing Arts has offered up fine performances on their stage but it still needs a little more work to make it truly excellent. I have already rated the Houston Symphony for the quality of the Pops Symphony performing there, if you want that review. As for the facility: Jones Hall is big from the outside but maybe a little smaller inside than what I was expecting. The personnel will NOT open the ticket offices until the minute strikes that they are to be opened. However, you might get antsy being able to see them set up and then chat away for 15 minutes until ticketing opens. The directions to the bathrooms are a little circuitous, and you will definitely be climbing stairs. The stall doors are alarmingly lower -- you will see the top of a head of a woman who stands 5'8". However, there's a nice powdering section to offset the lack of sinks/stalls. They have a video display on either side of the stage up high for those who are sitting farther away. It's a nice feature, but the quality of the camerawork leaves something to be desired. The cameras are also positioned from somewhere near the ceiling, so the video displays the tops of your performers' heads. So a huge plus for this place is their seating. When you first sit down, the seat is in this sort of upright position. However, you can lean back, and it will relax a bit. This is nice for when you're enjoying the performance, and latecomers awkwardly try to dance over you to get to their seats. You can sit-up a bit and allow them more walking room. This is a nice theater. I like the decor and the swinging seats are useful when letting people walk by you after you have been seated. The light setup for the show I attended was really robust and neat. My biggest and only complai,t is that the signage and such from the parking garage was not easy to navigate to the theater from. My friend and I struggled trying to figure out where to go which stairs to take and doors to navigate through. It seemed that signage was easier for the other theaters and from attending events at Wortham I can attest to this but Jones Hall could use more navigation assistance from the garage. read more

The Jones hall is very nice and the orchestra is awesome!. I sat in the front row and the orchestra members always had friendly conversations once they entered the stage. I would not recommend sitting on the first row because it was difficult to see the entire stage. The food during intermission is great, but you have to make sure that you eat it prior to returning to your seat. They won't hold any of it for you to eat later and no food is allowed in the arena. It is a great experience! I've gone several times to see various players and it always takes my breath away because the music is so great! read more

Attended the Houston Symphony Empire Strikes Back Show. I went in thinking it would be just the Symphony playing the soundtrack. Come to find out, they played the soundtrack while they showed the movie on the big screen. I was so focused on the screen, I completely forgot there was a live orchestra. One minor downside. I chose seats where part of our view was obstructed. We had to contort our heads to improve our view. This made for an uncomfortable period. Me and my date, found other seats that were open after the 1st Intermission. Also had dinner at The Lancaster Hotel which is right across the street. Great food, ambiance. Small restaurant. We couldn't get a reservation. Had to wait for a spot at the bar. FYI, make a reservation way in advance. If going without a reservation, go about 2 hours early. read more

It was my first time in this theater, we saw the Alvin Ailey American Dance company performed. Lots of old African American spirituals and jazz ensemble mix. The show was a great lyrical style story. Oddly enough, when we got there we found that our tickets were for the wrong date/time. We definitely didn't pick the wrong times on purpose since we all had busy weekends. I wasn't surprised because the Symphony's booking site it sketchy and needs an upgrade. They said they could try to exchange our tickets for us. Sarah Renden did just that and made sure to give us tickets where we would be seated together as in our original tickets. She was great and kind to us.. give her a raise!.. and tell the Houston Symphony to fix their booking system!! read more

Terribly designed building. What were people thinking back in the 70s with brutalist architecture? So cold outside. Pain to walk around to will call ticket counter located outside. No lobby to speak of. Bistro food. Old, leftover panini sandwiches and weak salads. Not really a meal. Restrooms small and not conveniently located. Large underground parking, easy and convenient to get in. Impossible to leave and get out. Let alone get oriented on how to get on highways Accoutics downstairs awful. Best to sit up in mezzanine balcony. Sound decent up there. Don't like symphony programs anymore where only certain movements played. To appreciate a piece, need to hear it in its entirety to understand musical development. Guess i'm spoiled. Growing up in Pittsburgh with Andre Previn and Lorien Maazel. Then spending a great deal of time living in NYC and Philadelphia. No Houston, as far as the fine arts go. You have not made the big leagues yet. (Stick with the Theater in Houston). And very limited choice of nearby walkable establishments for after performance drink. read more

I really enjoyed the layout of this facility. I got a cheap seat, which I thought was going to be in a nose-bleed section, but it was actually on the third row from the front. I could not see the entire stage, but the large TV screen showing close-ups was in great view. I thought it might be loud from where I was sitting, but it was not, at all. I imagine there is really no bad seat in the house. I also appreciated that it was very easy to get to the seating areas. The circular design is really conducive for this kind of event. I got to see a Mozart Thanksgiving. Three of his pieces were performed and the Houston Symphony did a very fine and professional job. I look forward to going back soon. read more

Of all the performing arts venues in the Theater District, Jones Hall is the oldest and provides the most seats (nearly 3000). It is also the most beautiful when viewed from the outside. Inside, it oozes an aura of opulence, but acoustically, it's a bit of a barn. Sound-wise, the venue for Houston's opera and ballet companies, Wortham Center's Brown Theater, is superior. The other big venue in the district, the Hobby Center's Sarofin Hall has better sight lines and a more intimate feel, but I can't comment on the acoustics since I've only attended Broadway shows there which rely on amplification and haven't experienced how that hall handles music that doesn't require microphones. In a huge city like Houston, you need to have multiple large venues like this to accommodate all the opera, symphony, ballet, Broadway shows, pop concerts and other visiting productions that pull in a large audience. The performance itself, not the venue, should be the criteria one uses when deciding how to spend your entertainment dollars. Every hall I've visited in the Theater District (I haven't been to the Verizon Wireless Theater) is a fit-for-purpose or outstanding place in which to experience Houston's embarrassment of riches in the performing arts sphere. Jones Hall is the home of the Houston Symphony and the Society for the Performing Arts which hosts a wide variety of events. It sits on the fit-for-purpose end of the spectrum. Its acoustics are less than distinct. You are also further away from the stage (particularly in the balcony) than any of the other big halls. The acoustics are improved significantly during some performances when the roof is lowered and completely closes off the upper balcony. I find the best seats to be mid-orchestra (around row M) or in the loges on either side of the hall. Like any of the theaters in the downtown district, there is underground paid parking that will get you within comfortable walking distance of the hall. Just note that it's a bit Byzantine down in the bowels of these lots and if you don't pay attention, it's easy to find yourself lost (especially when trying to find your car after the show). Hint: just remember where you started and follow all the other people and you'll probably be okay. Until a benefactor with ridiculous amounts of money and a desire to have a building named after him or her comes along, Jones Hall will continue to be the place you go to hear the Symphony. The Houston Symphony is arguably the best symphony orchestra in the South and deserves your patronage. Don't let less-than-favorable reviews of Jones Hall keep you from hearing this cornerstone of our city's fine arts scene. read more

We went to Jones Hall for the sixth or seventh time and realized I never wrote a review. I have been there for so many shows that I can't remember them all. I have seen the Nutcracker a couple of times and the Houston Symphony a few times. This time it was the Chinese dancing production called Shen Yun. It was quite good and the Jones Hall facilities were superb. Parking was very convenient just across Louisiana Street on Texas. I was parked in 5 minutes I would guess and walked through the garage. I love this theater, because there is no such thing as a bad seat. I went to see the Alvin Ailey Dance Theater here, and it was great. The facility is really nice and clean. There is a lot of space outside of the theater, and inside of the theater. There are a lot of places to buy drinks and food, and I would say that it's reasonably priced. I love the fact that there are seated cafes all around, for people to mix and mingle during the intermission of the show. There was a bonus performance going on in the lobby, which was pretty cool. The staff was very friendly, and it wasn't hard to find a seat. The bathroom were clean, and plentiful. I was able to see the stage really well, considering I didn't have a top dollar seat. Best way to get into the parking area is through capitol, parking lot #4. Puts you right under the Theater. I'm a big fan of Jones Hall, I feel like they did an awesome job with the design and acoustics of the place. Last show I saw was the Broadway sing a long by the Houston Symphony and it was amazing, so much fun! The conductor, Robert Franz, I believe was great! Houston has never lacked in performing arts venues; but , if I had to list my favorite choices, Jones Hall would certainly be in my top three. The Houston symphony regularly performs here; and, several musicals, jazz troupes and others have graced the stages, as well. The building is statuesque, and the location is phenomenal. Since downtown has been revived (within the past 10 years) with new restaurants, bars, nightclubs and a new generation of patrons, Jones hall has enjoyed a refreshing influx of those wishing to see a good show. Although its been a while, I felt compelled to write about Jones Hall (lol)... The location was ok... The hall is pretty decent, We went to go see the Color Purple play. Recently, My husband and family went to go see FELA the play. I would go again! read more
