My son (6 years old) and I (35 year-old mother), have been taking classes at Joon Lee's for a little over a year now. We both enjoy the exercise and learning new skills. Master Jared and Grand Master Joon Lee have been the main instructors at our school in Orland Park for the past few months. They are both fantastic instructors for the many age ranges and abilities at the studio. When my son started he was not very coordinated and I see him improving each month. Not only is this exercise, but he has to stay focused in class, memorize belt creeds, forms, and children's home rules and has become a leader in Little Dragons where he loves to help teach the younger kids. You have the opportunity to test each month for a new belt and the process to become a black belt takes about two years. My youngest just turned three and I'm trying to convince my husband to let me sign him up. He's been watching from the sidelines for half his life, tried a trial class and was amazing. The kids learn so much self control because there are high expectations for them. I also highly recommend a birthday party at Joon Lee's. Master Jared will take first-time attendees and give them a shortened version of class in which everyone gets to break a board. For the most part the kids loved it and when the pandemic happened we were forced not to go to establishments. With that being said we signed up for the spring/summer at the time because the kids really wanted to do this activity. We have our end of summers/winters fully booked and planned on moving 45minutes away from this location. When asked for a refund they told me they would just give me credit to come back but at this point it fell into the Times that just weren't suitable for my family. I paid the $1,000 something in full and was not able to get my refund at the end of the day. So now I am stuck with sessions that I'm sure are going to expire which we can't even use. The facility is well kept and there is space for parents to sit and watch the class in action. I have been attending the Orland Park location for almost 3 years now. Before choosing Joon Lee's I contacted other schools in the area and they never called me back or they were pretty rude over the phone. Master David got back to me right away and was very enthusiastic and signed me up for a trial class right away. The morning adult class at the Orland park location was exactly what I was looking for and I was hooked right away. I originally wanted to start TKD to lose weight and work on my cardio. The other reason why I started was because my father was a black belt in TKD in the 80s and I wanted to carry on a family tradition. What really made me fall in love with the school was that Grand Master Lee had known my father's Grand Master and he has shown my father great respect because of this. All the instructors are very encouraging and they push you to be your best. I also like that the history of the school and lineage are very clear up to at least 3 generations. I read some negative reviews due to financial concerns, it is a bit pricey but you get what you pay for. They were upfront about the prices for the class, testing and tournaments. I knew what I was going to be paying so I can't really complain. Whenever I have had financial issues they have always worked with me on my payments and they never stopped me from attending classes. For me it is more than just practicing TKD, I am hanging out with buddies, having laughs, taking out frustration on the bags and pads and getting a real good workout in. I was unable to train under my father's lineage but with Master Lee knowing his Grand Master it is the next best thing and is still somewhat connected. Unfortunately, I am very disappointed with the service here. My wife and I both agreed that it was a bit much when we signed up but Master Lee assured us that if our financial status changed, we would be able to work something out. Well, I had to change jobs and took a pay cut and couldn't afford the classes anymore, much less the monthly testing fees. We spoke to them and the first thing they said was "you signed a contract". We brought up our conversation when we first signed up and they responded with a "if it's not on paper, it doesn't matter". I HIGHLY recommend that you read every last word before you sign up. Once the children are signed up and they have you locked in, they easily forget about their promises of making sure the kids enjoy it. read more

We were excited and enjoyed our time there, but they are very unforgiving nor understanding of the unexpected. I enrolled my boys for a year of the course, but after six months, my job relocated me. Besides the fact that they're very pricy, they said they could not give me any type of return for the remaining six months. They kept about $1000 all because of unexpected life changes. They really did disappoint me, and wouldn't even work with me to try to resolve something. God forbid anything happens, they will keep your money. I am a mother of 4 and Tae Kwon Do was my break time. During my class time, I was the only adult (Mother LOL) surrounded by 20+ kids. At 291lbs I question my purposed because I didn't see any other adults that I would be able to relate to. After the second class, I felt comfortable with the instructors. They didn't push hard but encourage and challenge improvement. To them I was not just some oversize mom trying to run, jump and kick, but I was a student who wanted to learn. I enjoyed the kids because they challenge you and encourage you to be great. The best parts was when I hear " I wish my mom would do class with me, that would be cool." My only reason for not continuing is because of a lot of medical issues that I personally didn't know about which required long recovery times. I think the pay is worth every class. They are great people, they understand and always try to find the best solutions to any problem. I'm glad they accepted me and I look forward on my return. Thank you for having me! P.S. My two sons aged 4 and 5 have been attending tae kwon do classes here for a little over 6 months. The instructors are great with the kids. The flexibility, discipline and focus being taught is not available in other sports for their age. The facility has ample seating for the adults with about 15 padded chairs and about 30' of benches as well. Also, the practice area for the children is spacious (25 Pricing is fair for the amount of "floor time" you get and there is always a nice ratio of instructors to students. Right now there are 10 childrto 4 instructors, including Grand Master Lee himself. It is nice that they can break out to smaller groups and focus more on the childrens' given skill/belt levels. Other schools do not offer this. 5 out of 5 stars across the board for Joon Lee and his expert staff! My kids are noticeably more attentive and focused in part to what they have been learning here. I recently signed up my children for taekwondo and they love it! Master Michael and Instructor Cindy have been amazing at teaching all the little children self control and discipline. Master Lee guides the entire class, making sure everyone is listening properly and demonstrating respect. My son not only has improved, but loves learning every new move they show him! Note: This is a loooong review, well worth reading before you patronize this place. I give this place 1 star to account for the fact that my kids loved the instructors, they loved learning tae kwon do, and they loved the other kids in their classes...HOWEVER be prepared to SPEND SPEND SPEND. This place is a money sucking machine, no regards to the current economic situation we are facing, and more importantly they are DISHONEST about their fees and prices to begin with. It all started when my sons school partnered up with Joon Lee's to do a fundraiser, offering 4 classes for $20 (held conviniently at the school) with all the proceeds going to the school. They held a cute 'graduation' from these classes at their facility, kids broke a board, received stripes on belt, great experience. They then offered a low low introductory rate for $150 per month per child, waiving the membership fees, plus a free uniform, classes are mon-sat. I have three boys, so this means $450 for me, but i shelled it out since they loved it, they can go everyday, and it seems like a great program for them to be involved in (self esteem, dicipline, etc). While signing them up I specifically ask the girl "What other fees are involved and does the rate go up nxt month?" To which she responds, "Oh No, no fees, maybe when they move up in belt rank it goes up to $200 a month but thats it." Again, pricey but kids love it, so here we go. They wrap up their first month, are getting allll excited about testing for a new belt...and they hit us with THIS: In order for them to test for a new belt, I need to pay $100.... EACH!!! I am looking at $300 on top of the $450 I pay per month!!....this seems outrageous right away and I start to regret the whole thing! But then it gets WORSE: In order for them to continue the program, there is a fee for sparring equipment(which i found online for much much less) and membership fee's (wait weren't they waived/dont I pay that monthly??) of ....$500 per child!!! Yes per child, So i am looking at $450 per month, $1500 worth of equipment and membership fees (which btw need to be paid every 2 yrs) plus $300 every belt testing. I start to loose it here.... I call "Master" Joon Lee and start asking questions. The man gets extremely upset, because to him that is not a lot of money I guess. No I cannot buy the sparring equipment myself, No they cannot continue without sparring equipment, No i dont pay membership fee's already my $450 covers their classes only, and No the fees werent waived entriely, just for the first month. WTF??? GOOD BYE JOON LEE!!!! Adding to the dishonesty issue, before we sat down and crunched #'s, my husband had talked to the school about our $$$ concerns, but left a deposit to secure a discounted rate(consisting of $50 less per month) in case there was something we could work out, which the "Master" assured was refundable if we decided the program was unaffordable. After mine and the "Masters" little phone spat, my husband returned for his $50 deposit, and there right on the sheet where he had originally initialled, in different ink, written obviously after the original form was completed, were the words "not refundable". I have been bringing my 7-1/2-year old son about 3 times per week since the end of December. Despite the negative reviews, my son really enjoys the sport, and I love watching him succeed in it. My only star reduction is for pricing. They are expensive, yes, but I would have liked to see a roster of fees for equipment, testing, belts, etc., a little more up front. Compared to other places I have seen, it just seems to be an expensive sport. As far as why I feel this has been a great investment - My son has had trouble with focus, attention, behavior, you name it. In the 3 months we have been involved with Tae Kwon Do, I have seen a great improvement in his school work, respect at home, and general behavior. When he starts to get off track, I only have to remind him of "Children's home rule #1) which relates to respect for your parents. I do like that you only sign up 3 months at a time, so if you (or your child) decide to discontinue, you are not committed for a years-long contract. read more

My primary reason to write this is to serve as legal protection (which in itself is a review). Todays date is 2/23/15. On 2/20/15, we explored the Joon Lee Orland Park Location as an opportunity for our son to learn martial arts. After a "free" testing session, we were sat down and strongly coerced into signing a membership agreement under the premise that we pay $20 for the "free" course and on the 23rd we pay the full amount of $458. Although we did sign, and were purchasing under emotion as our son really liked the class, we did note that the contract has a cancellation clause. Today, 2/23/15 after putting thought into this decision, we decided that it is not a program we wish to pursue, mainly because of the need to sign a legal type agreement for a child of such a young age. We also read previous Yelp reviews, and did not like the idea that you must pay $100 for the 10 tests that exist for each level. It just didn't feel right. Today, we returned written notice to the owner as instructed by the agreement. My wife went in to cancel and came across a very intimidating owner who bullied her around. Extremely distasteful, ignorant, rude, who really upset her while trying to make her feel we were obligated to adhere to the agreement. I am happy my wife went, as I wouldn't have held my composer to her standard. The owner actually questioned the need to see the contract to verify we could null and void it. So, as I fear there will be repercussions and we will receive some sort of small claim, I need a way to verify that we went in person to deliver the letter as the owner would not work with us. My instincts were right and this is not a family friendly nor oriented environment. Terrible way to do business. TW read more

This is a great school. My daughter has ADHD and they are very understanding about it and they work so well with her. She has a hard time sitting still and focusing on what she has to do, but they take the time to work with her. I love that there are classes 6 days a week. Yes, it can be a bit on the pricey side but it is all worth it to me when I see her advancing and learning new things. The masters and instructors are always available to answer any questions. Joon Lee's taekwondo school is the best martial arts program my husband and I found after trying several schools in the area. The program is well structured and the instructors do not only teach martial art technique but they heavily instill good moral and ethical behavior. Master Lee pays careful attention to the progress of each student and sets high expectations. Master Jared is an excellent instructor and also sets high standards through discipline. Our daughters' have never been given a free pass and have had to truly earn every belt level. They have consequently learned that hard work leads to achieving their goals and has also given them a sense of accomplishment. We really liked it here at first but after paying for one year found out two months later we had to move out of state. Let everyone there know right away and were told we would get our money back minus two months our son went. Contacted owner almost every day and finally received a check for HALF the amount that was owed to us. We should of received 10 months back but instead were only paid for not even 6 months. How can a business that promotes respect and honor take money from a disabled military family on fixed income?
