It's a big place and being so spread out I didn't know what to do first or better yet if I drove to far in one direction would I miss something even cooler on the other side of the Vally. After only a few days, I experienced so much; dining and drinking where soon to be colonial leaders and legends once did, siping hard ciders by a camp fire in the orchard where the cider was pressed, even a very formal Michelin star meal in a town renowned for its dirty Hippies (Woodstock) where we also learned the concert DIDN'T take place. The time I spent in the Hudson Vally and curated by Dana left me wanting to buy cabin and set up shop. I feel like there's more to explore but my very short trip was filled with places and things that would have never occurred to me alone. I really can't wait to get back and now wish all the places I travel had someone like Dana to show all the treasures they have.

Not wanting to gather in the city or be around a lot of people, we shuffled off to the Hudson Valley and it was SUCH a welcome treat :) Hud-Val Concierge turned all of our desires into reality by planning an itinerary that was perfectly tailored to our vacation likes/dislikes. We safely (concierge was AMAZING with COVID protocol and protection) explored New Paltz, Kingston, Woodstock, and Rhinebeck during the winter and CAN NOT WAIT to come back during warmer months. Our main interests of NYC caliber food, hiking, antique shopping, and distillery/brewery tours were met with such precision and thoughtfulness. We loved ALL the restaurant recs (from low key breakfast burrito spots to Manhattan-chef'd fine dining), the outdoor bar atmospheres, the historic town and classic home strolls, and the wilderness exploration. The location itself is breathtaking, set in a beautifully restored historic mansion right on the Hudson River. However, the real highlight was getting a behind-the-scenes look at their distillation process. Charles was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate as he walked us through their production of rye, bourbon, gin, and vodka. A must-try is their vodka, which Charles proudly explained is distilled a remarkable 12 times. I can confidently say it is the best vodka I have ever sampled--exceptionally smooth. I was also impressed by their other spirits: Northwest Passage Gin: This gin stands out because it uses naturally soft water sourced directly from their artesian wells. Black Creek Bourbon: I was fortunate enough to sample a limited Founder's Batch of this bourbon. It is truly hand-crafted, made using limestone-softened natural artesian well water. The depth of care and quality put into every bottle is evident, and the personal details shared by the founder made the spirits taste even better. If you have the chance, I highly recommend asking for the tour--it provides an incredible appreciation for the craftsmanship at Hudson House Distillery.

But the food was so well prepared that it should be recognized. We started with a very tasty pork belly bao with hoisin sauce. Their house salad was a very well presented and interesting salad. But they knocked it out of the park with their entrees: roasted branzino with asparagus in a beurre blanc sauce and a strip steak served on a bed of caramelized onions and mushrooms in a bordelaise sauce. In particular, the steak, ordered medium rare, came out tender and perfectly cooked, and was of very high quality. Finally the sticky toffee pudding cake was served warm and was delicious. It's seems that they definitely have regular customers that come in. It's not too big of a spot but there was a lot of seating both tables and around the bar.

This distillery is also has grounds you can walk around and explore (not too big though). We took a peek at their aging/storage room with wooden casks while there, as well as their distillery. We were treated to a free, small sample of their whiskey at their bar. Its a nice stop when in upstate NY area.

Business was slow so the woman serving drinks offered us a free tasting of their four main liquors: vodka, gin, maple spirit, and rye whiskey. She was incredibly knowledgeable and was able to give us detailed descriptions of each one. I'm no liquor expert but the gin and maple spirit were both delicious. We bought a bottle of each and can't wait to tuck into them later. We stayed for a few cocktails as well and really enjoyed their pleasant tasting room. If liquor isn't your thing, they also offer a few local wines and beers. Highly recommend checking this place out when you're in the area!

They offered free tours AND tastings, created seasonal cocktails, and even possessed a full event calendar. Their tasting included the Vly Creek Vodka, Drie Brook Rye Whiskey, FirGIN, and the Catskill Mountain Maple Spirit. The vodka was uniquely composed from wheat and apples, giving it a hint of sweetness and making it smooth enough to drink straight. The rye was excellent and not overly harsh, and the gin was packed with various herbs. The maple beverage was 80 proof and resembled a sweet rum or bourbon. I was not the hugest fan of the gin, but the others were all terrific! Also, the woman that hosted our experience was a complete sweetheart! There was a bar where you could order cocktails that included their products and a lounge in which to enjoy them. I opted for a seasonal blend of vodka, lemonade, and watermelon that was freshly-pressed by the owner. It was strong, but also tart and refreshing. The Union Grove Distillery provided a highly engaging and informative tasting, as well as a comfortable environment in which to enjoy their crafted liquors.

It was only about an hour or so away from our house, so this was a real treat. Even though it was a cloudy day in March, the distillery was so beautiful. We can only imagine how gorgeous it is in the summer. We ended up having a private tour since no one else had signed up for the 11am time slot - fine by us! Our tour guide, Bob, was very friendly and knowledgeable, explaining everything in great detail. After the tour, we had our tasting. The tour and tasting we chose was The Hillrock Distillery Tour & Barrel Proof Tasting with Cheese & Charcuterie Plate - worth every penny! The bourbons were all absolutely amazing and the charcuterie plates paired perfectly with them. We ended up buying our two favorite bourbons, along with a pair of glasses and a hat for my husband. We are already trying to find another occasion to visit. Who knows...maybe we'll try The Founder's Tour next time. Thank you for making my husband's birthday so special. He was smiling for the rest of the day.
