Excellent local distillery in the Catskill Mountains of upstate NY. My girlfriend and I visited on a Saturday afternoon in May after hiking for a few hours. Business was slow so the woman serving drinks offered us a free tasting of their four main liquors: vodka, gin, maple spirit, and rye whiskey. She was incredibly knowledgeable and was able to give us detailed descriptions of each one. I'm no liquor expert but the gin and maple spirit were both delicious. We bought a bottle of each and can't wait to tuck into them later. We stayed for a few cocktails as well and really enjoyed their pleasant tasting room. Union Grove Distillery was owned by a husband and wife team that was dedicated to keeping the facility interesting. They offered free tours AND tastings, created seasonal cocktails, and even possessed a full event calendar. Their tasting included the Vly Creek Vodka, Drie Brook Rye Whiskey, FirGIN, and the Catskill Mountain Maple Spirit. The vodka was uniquely composed from wheat and apples, giving it a hint of sweetness and making it smooth enough to drink straight. The rye was excellent and not overly harsh, and the gin was packed with various herbs. The maple beverage was 80 proof and resembled a sweet rum or bourbon. I was not the hugest fan of the gin, but the others were all terrific! Also, the woman that hosted our experience was a complete sweetheart! There was a bar where you could order cocktails that included their products and a lounge in which to enjoy them. I opted for a seasonal blend of vodka, lemonade, and watermelon that was freshly-pressed by the owner. It was strong, but also tart and refreshing. As soon as we arrived we were greeted by friendly bar staff. They asked us if we wanted to do a tasting. The tasting was comprehensive and informative. Such friendly people here at Union Grove! Since it was my first time, I enjoyed free tastings of the gin and maple spirit - both fantastic. The gin is flavored with fir, and the maple spirit drank somewhere between a bourbon and rum. Since we brought the dog, we drank our cocktails outside. Maple spirit old fashioned was great (I was worried when I saw a splash of orange juice go in there - but I didn't mind it), and their fir gin collins refreshing. Craft distilleries are cropping up everywhere, and this one has been in Arkville NY for 3 years. Long enough to produce a respectable rye, and a more than respectable gin made with mostly fir rather than juniper. Their maple spirit is very good too. They have a nice tasting room with cocktails based on their own spirits and infusions. Nice place to stop for an hour while exploring Arkville, Margaretville, or even Phoenicia and Woodstock. read more

My boyfriend and myself were out on a day of motorcycle riding and we got lost up in the Catskills. Needless to say, we stopped at Union Grove Distillery and we were so happy we did. Upon arriving, Noreen was so kind and welcoming. She saw us on the bike so she knew we were just passing through, so she offered us a quick tasting. The spirits were incredible. Such a different twist on things. The vodka and gin were totally drinkable and delicious and I am usually 100% whisky gal. The rye and maple spirit both offered something incredible. We enjoyed chatting with her while she took time to give us a tour of the place, and a bit of history. It was AWESOME being a fellow small business owner to see other people still working hard and putting their very own blood sweat and tears into making an awesome product and experience. We walked into the distilling area and I was not expecting such an eclectic place behind those doors. I immediately thought it was a perfect space to host a private event. Loved the original character of the old building. Hard to find places like that anymore. Needless to say, we were 200 miles away from home by chance, but between Noreen, the tasty tasty beverages (Omg the whisky slushee) and the overall ambiance of the distillery, we will definitely be getting lost up in the Catskills again. read more

My boyfriend's parents have a house close to here and we always make at least one trip over when we go upstate. This place is friendly and inviting - the bartenders are always willing to talk and let you try the new stuff they are brewing. On our first trip, the woman behind the bar was even kind enough to give us a small tour. So far they have been focusing on vodka but are planning on doing some rum and whiskey in the future. Most of the drinks I have tried have been great - but my favorite by far is the White Russian :) read more

Awesome distillery in quite Catskill town. The staff here is very friendly and helpful. This is a very relaxing fun place. They sometimes have love music. They give tours of the distillery. Last but not least the vodka is delicious. I highly recommend the coffee martini and or the cucumber vodka martini. The maple vodka has a distinct sweet taste as well. They have great house cocktails as well. Highly recommend this place when visiting arkville. read more

If this were JUST a local distillery I would give it five stars because the vodka is amazing (made from locally grown and pressed apples and local wheat) and is some of the smoothest vodka I've ever had. But Union Grove is more... They have a small bar that serves cocktails with their Vly Creek vodka and typically they feature one with locally produced Tree Juice maple syrup. Drink ingredients are interesting and amazingly flavorful. They offer great live music on most weekends. This is a family owned and operated place and they treat you like family too (only without any of the expectations for you to go to grad school and none of the guilt!) :-) Get on their mailing list and put this on your list of go-to things to do in the area! read more

GREAT PLACE! Came in here while spending a weekend in the Catskills and was so impressed. I usually don't drink vodka, but their vodka was smooth and delicious. They offered us a tasting right away and had an extensive (and delicious) cocktail menu made with their vodka and different vodka infusions. We took a tour of the back with the owner Brian and he was so great and answered all of our questions. The tasting room is super cozy and the cocktail list is extensive, so it seems like a great hang out spot as well. The owner mentioned that they were in the midst of distilling a different type of liquor in addition to vodka and had plans for some great future things (like movie showings in the distillery during the winter). Pretty cool distillery, came in when somebody was getting ready to give a birthday party so they were steel guitar being played definitely a nice effect. Sampled a couple of the vodkas, fair warning the only thing they have is vodka, and then got two cocktails, pretty reasonably priced $10 a cocktail. Stopped in here after camping the night before. I must say I'm not a vodka person but I love this vodka! I think the fact that they use local and fresh apples in their mash makes a big difference! It's a very clean tasting finished product. You get a nice tour of where the magic happens. Some very solid equipment I must say! One the owners gave me and my friends a tour and it is very interesting process. Another noteworthy thing to mention were the infused vodkas which made for even better mixed drinks! I had an orange creamsicle and a lemonade drink that were both refreshing and delicious! I'm salivating right now just thinking about it! This is definitely worth a pit stop if camping nearby. I just can't wait until they produce whiskey because that is my favorite! Keep an eye out for that and rum because I was told they were in the works. We enjoyed the distillery very much. The vodka was excellent and we were very excited to have the first release of the whiskey. The rye whiskey was excellent and we purchased two bottles to go home. The only reason it is not five stars is that there is no food served. It would be amazing if they would serve food or some small snacks so that we can enjoy drinking for longer periods of time. So happy we stumbled on this distillery on a drive through the area. Friendly staff and some really good and interesting spirits were being made. Also, it was super family friendly with an ingenious kids room off to the side of the bar that allowed for the little ones to play in an enclosed and safe space while the grownups got to taste and actually have conversation about the fascinating products! read more

My husband and I got married in the area in October and we found ourselves in need of a "night before" location to host guests who were in town for the weekend for a little pre-wedding celebration when our original plan fell through. We reached out to Union Grove in hopes that they would be willing to host us, and boy did they! Brian was so easy to work with, responded to our emails super quickly and graciously offered to accommodate our group. The tasting room is lovely and cozy, the spirits and cocktails are delicious and the staff is so friendly! They set up the back room for us since we were a larger group, put out water and cups for our guests and let us hook up to their sound system to play our own music. It was a perfect, casual, comfortable place to visit with our guests and to kick off our wedding weekend! We love Union Grove and will absolutely be visiting anytime we're back in the area.
