The secret to finding a good men's suit is a good eye for clothing and a good tailor. The secret for finding a cheap off the rack suit and phenomenal service is to go to the JoS A Bank in Ann Arbor and get Lavar. Lavar helped us, and my partner and I can't stop signing his praises. JoS A Bank is a chain that came to us highly reccomended. We had tried to find a suit at express and Nordstrom Rack with no luck. We were avoiding Men's Warehouse at all costs because of meh experiences in the past. This JoS A Bank is in Arbor Land, hidden next to the potbelly and office max. We had trouble finding it and almost missed going entirely. After Nordstrom Rack's AWFUL service with suits, and Express's ill fitting suits that are sized like women's clothing (aka badly), we were feeling pretty tired and forlorn. JoS A Bank was our last stop. And it almost didn't happen. We were feeling pretty bad - Like, "Oh god, we're going to have to pull the other outfit out of the closet for this funeral". About to quit, with nothing to lose, and spotting it when we were turning out of the parking lot and going home, I convinced my partner to stop - because what did we have to lose? So we pulled into a parking spot and tried our luck. We walk in, and start looking around - everything is cheap. I mean, even if we were to buy a suit, without a clearance, or a sale, JoS A Bank is pretty competitive. They also have a huge amount of options in a huge amount of styles. My partner is 28, short and skinny, so we needed something that looked nice for his age group, could be tailored, and wasn't a box. For the record, shopping for suits, it's pretty much a nightmare situation for us, we have no idea what to look for or where to start (even when equipped with internet tips). So I ask for help from one of the sales associates, when he gets a minute (he was helping someone else at the time). Now this guy is fast. Lavar helped them and then came over to us before we had time to even pull something off a rack. So we tell him what we need the suit for, what we're interested in (a good suit, modern... or at least look good? -- that's right, we were ultra vague). Anyway, so Lavar picks out like 3 suits, and points out the benefits of all of these. They were all nice, but one was like - AWESOME. "This guy knows the inventory", we thought to ourselves. Not only that, it was on clearance, and there were more sales that week on top of clearance! This was pretty lucky that the suit was awesome, and lucky that it was cheap because my partner wouldn't have been swayed by a sub adequate suit, even if it was on clearance. So we're like - YES this one! And we went through the whole process of needing to get the legs hemmed, and making sure that the suit fit correctly in all these other ways too. He had to get the waist taken out, and the pant taken up. Let's just say that this is more work than we expected. Lavar was a veritable source of knowledge on what to get / what woul dbe stylish for his build. Half break, mid break, slight break, no break? What shoes would look better, etc. Let's just say that the quality of time and effort Lavar spent with us is worth more than the total cost we spent (that day and the day we went back to pick up the suit post-tailoring). We ended up buying socks, a tie, shoes, the suit, and a few alterations on the pants. A note about the alterations - Lavar realized that we were in a tight spot, needing a suit on the fly with a funeral to attend and was able to get us rush-booked so we'd be sure to have a suit in time. It was a godsend. When we went in to get the alterations done, they were wrong, but the tailor was still there and they re-altered the pants with the correct break/break we wanted. All additional and future alterations that we've already paid for on a suit are lifetime guarantees, so we can get it re-altered in the future for free. This was great, because we're hoping to have other people provide input on this whole 'how much of a break' issue. Did I mention that Lavar was fun and personable? I don't regularly call people out by name in my reviews, but Lavar was JUST THAT GREAT. I hope his manager takes notice and keeps him around. Ask for Lavar if you go. Beyond their having descent clothing, especially for their sale prices like 4 suits for the price of 1, their customer service is outstanding. For a mainstream clothier, they provide you the service of a fine clothier. Yes, if you want a custom made suit you are not their customer, but for off the rack stuff it is very nice. They do offer custom tailoring which is where they start to get their price back but it is on site, quick, and well done. I just can't say enough about their customer service. However they seem to be very understaffed the times I've been in the store. There are usually 3 or more customers in the store when I've been there and 2 salesmen tops. They work very hard to make sure everyone feels attended to. They hustle without seeming overwhelmed. I shop Von Maur, Nordstroms and Macys and their customer service is worse than Burger King (which is pretty descent actually) which really makes Joseph A Bank stand out. I am sad to write this review, because my first visit there a year ago with my teenaged son was so positive, the staff was so attentive and helpful. Today he needed more items, and we went there together. I am trying to teach him that quality matters, and that it's better to buy quality, even if it costs a little more. I was ready to spend a lot. So we enter, and wander about, with no one approaching us, even though it was not too busy. Finally, I have to approach an associate, Ron McC., and ask for assistance, who replies, as soon as he is finished with another customer. So far so good. After a few minutes he approaches us, and pretty quickly lets us know, his store cannot offer us what we are looking for. No offer of anything else, just a brusque denial of product, no alternative offer, and no inquiry if we need anything else. Okaaaayy, so we wander off looking for other items. He follows us and SILENTLY observes our browsing, giving the distinct impression he is monitoring for thievery (a conjecture, but that was indeed the impression). I am at a loss, and truly need some assistance, we needed several items, and it was not busy. Ultimately, my son and I exit the store, with Ron McC. almost mockingly calling after us if we "needed anything". I left feeling angry, and my son feeling dispirited, and I said to my son , might as well just go to the mall. Joseph A Banks: you didn't just lose me, you lost my son, a potential customer for life. Ron McC: you should know by now that sometimes the most unassuming looking people can be the biggest spenders, and you should leave whatever prejudices you may have at the door. Jos. A. Banks is a national chain but this small store in Arborland delivers quality service. My boyfriend needed a suit so we decided to give this place a try. They had a tremendously good promotion on their signature suits (suits originally $650 down to $125). The sales manager was knowledgeable and friendly. He knew a lot about suit etiquette. Go when there's a good sale, otherwise the prices are a bit pricey. They have a huge selection of slim fit suits for those who find traditional suits way too big and boxy. They have a few classic colors on hand but they can special order different colors. Luckily for us, the color they had on hand was stunning.. a nice dark charcoal grey that is great for all seasons. read more

I'm impressed that Jos A Bank was able to create a cheap suit empire considering he apparently was born colorblind. It's a true inspiration. I was in a 5 man wedding party over the weekend. Obviously, we had all ordered the same suit in the same color from the store registry the groom set up. To our delight, when we arrived for the wedding, we realized that the suits we were given came in 4 different shades of grey. This was particularly wonderful since 3 of us matched the groom, despite his being the only one that actually was supposed to be different, so he blended in with everyone ambiguously. It was so thoughtful of Mr. Bank to help guaranteed an easier escape should the groom have gotten cold feet; but he didn't, so basically ole' Jos just ruined all their wedding photos forever. I've shopped a lot at Jos A Banks, but after recent events and poor customer service, I won't be back. PROS: Their suits are nice, definitely much better than most department stores or Men's warehouse. Also, when a rental suit was sent to Ann Arbor by accident, the staff overnighted it down to Perrysburg, which I thought was just fantastic of them (Thanks, Wendy from the Perrysburg store!). Despite good things, there were problems with my wedding order, there's a bad taste in my mouth. ISSUE #1: THEIR TAILORING ISN'T GREAT, IT'S JUST OK. This one is somewhat minor. To do it properly, you should take your suit to a really good, professional tailor. If you're gonna spend the money on a nice suit, do yourself a favor and work with a good tailor to get an incredible fit, which you won't quite get with Jos A Banks. ISSUE #2: QUOTED PRICES ON RENTALS MEAN NOTHING, AND THERE'S NO ACCOUNTABILITY. I was told that, because Jos A Banks, is a nationwide store, that rental prices are guaranteed to be the same at each store, with some minor fluctuations due to differences in taxes. Specifically, I was told that the rentals would be about $150 (including suit, shirt, shoes, tie, pocket square), and probably about $175 including tax. Great, sounds like a deal. Problem is that people ended up being quoted (and paying) anywhere from $160 to over $200; variations greater than differences in taxes. I called different stores and the Ann Arbor location. Every single time, I get an 'I don't know why' answer, which is unacceptable since I was told it'd be pretty much the same everywhere. The only theory I got was from the manager at Ann Arbor, who said that maybe the $150 quote included a discount when people opened up Jos A Banks accounts or something, which would make for a misleading price quote, if that were the case. All I know is that the guaranteed price meant nothing, and that some people ended up paying upwards of $30 or so more than what I was quoted. ISSUE #3: CUSTOMER SERVICE IS LACKING. So I ordered different colored ties for the dads and my groomsmen. The afternoon of the day before the wedding, I hear that one of the dads was given the wrong tie color - he was given the same color as the groosmen ties. OK, not a big deal. But I still needed to call and see what everyone was getting, so there were no more surprises. So, I called Jos A Banks (in Perrysburg, OH, because I happened to be there just a little bit beforehand, since I was in Ohio for the wedding), and I just wanted to know which color ties everyone else got, since 1 of them was wrong. I found out the wrong color ties were given to the dads. The salesperson told me to have them bring their ties in for an exchange, I said there wasn't time, that they were driving all over the US to get here, and it just wasn't a big deal. So, I get a defensive response of "Well, that's why we have people pick their suits up 2 days before, so we can take care of things like this." Well you know what? That's why I sat down with someone saying which colors I want everything to be when I made my initial order, so people wouldn't have to come back into the store the day before the wedding because you screwed up my order. Mind, I only called to see what everyone was getting because the colors of the ties were OK by me, but he gets defensive. Importantly, I never got an apology. I would've been perfectly happy with a "We're sorry this happened, what can we do to make it better?" and I would've said we're all good, and this review would've been very very different. My suits with tailoring cost over $1,000, two others bought their suits instead of rented, then everyone else rented. My using Jos A Banks for my wedding brought in thousands of dollars, and they get defensive when they screw up my order and don't even offer an apology? Unacceptable. I wasn't even upset about it, so there was no reason to get defensive. Two days after the wedding, I go to the Ann Arbor location to return my brother's rented shoes and to get the $40 deposit. The manager says he will charge me $20 for the late return (which is reasonable), and I ask if we can just call it even since the tie colors were off (which seemed a reasonable counter-offer to me). The manager says that Zach (from the Perrysburg store) called him and told him before about the situation the day before the wedding, and then he says to me that I could have changed the tie colors any time after ordering (which is a complete non-sequitur, because the issue wasn't about me not being able to change tie colors. It was about the order being wrong, which I found out about the day before the wedding.). He then reminded me that they ever so graciously offered to let people drive there so they could rectify their mistake. Again, no apology or an "I'm sorry that happened." Horrible experience. My fiancé decided to have his groomsmen rent suits and Jos A Bank had a deal going--rent five suits and get a major discount on a suit purchase. Seemed like a good idea for my fiancé to be able to buy his suit for the wedding. When he went in the buy the suit he was told the the coupon for the suit purchase only becomes active 2 weeks out from the event date. This made us very nervous but we were reassured several times that all alterations would be able to be completed in time. Flash forward to two weeks before the wedding, my fiancé goes in, purchases the suit and gets measured for alterations. When we went back to pick up his suit(1 week before the wedding) it fit very poorly, looked as if zero alterations had been made. We requested another alteration and were reassured that it could be altered adequately in a couple days. We arrived to pick up the suit a couple days later, when they said it would be ready, and they hadn't gotten around to tailoring it at all!!! The in house seamstress just wanted to make excuses and point fingers at others for the the mistake. Now we are 4 days out from our wedding with no suit for my fiancé to wear. They offered to set him up with another suit but who would trust them after that experience. If you need a well fitting suit in a timely manner AVOID jos. A bank. read more

tl;dr Sales staff aggressive, not considerate of customer needs. Go somewhere else. To put things into perspective, I made a yelp account just so I could write this review and share my poor experiences. Hit or miss with staff. Larry seems to be a good guy, not aggressive in his sales or service. Damon is okay. Old (white guy with mustache, gary or whatever) was not friendly at all. One of several unpleasant encounters: I did not like the quality of the stitching on the pants of a suit I wanted to buy. I requested that they order the same style suit for me; however, they declined and explained that it does not make sense for them to order another suit they already had on inventory. My dissatisfaction was with the particular suit and its poor craftsmanship, but it was wasted on deaf ears. He (Damon) said all the suits are the same and wrinkles are from the suit being on the hangar. Poor stitching is not caused by storage. They did not meet the following at all: Jos. A. We bought a coat. A few days later, it went on sale, but only online. We ordered a duplicate coat. When it arrived, we returned the first coat with receipt. The company refunded the purchased price for the second coat, not the first. It has been almost 7 months and we are still trying to get the money they owe us. Credit card company is helping, but Bank is wily. It credits our account and later goes back and recharges it, predating the action. Stay away from this company. There are plenty of other good places to buy clothes. read more
