I recently wanted to send some papayas to some friends in California, but wasn't quite sure how to…read morego about doing that....so I searched on the internet and came across Volcano Isle Fruit Company. I placed my order on-line on Friday and like clockwork received an e-mail on Monday that they received my order and would be processing it. They then sent me tracking information and like Japan's train system, the papayas arrived on time just as they said!....if you know anything about Japan's train system, you can set your watch by it. I am impressed that they can ship 10 lbs of papayas, Rainbow or Sunred, or a combination of the two to anywhere in the USA via UPS for $59.95, shipping included. Other companies charge more. This is the first time I've used them and I'm waiting for a report from my friend to see if they were sweet...and which ones they liked better, but so far, everything seems great. Papayas arrived on Thursday and I could check the tracking which said they were left at the front door...sure enough, they got them. I will update my review when I hear from my friends. What I appreciated was the farm to table concept, since they supply many restaurants along the Kona coast, with their plump, sweet, non slimy, or gritty tomatoes. Mike and Tricia have read and gained wisdom from the professionals on how you can adjust the sweetness of the tomatoes, which I was dumbfounded and never knew that you could tweak a tomato. This is a business that involves all of the ohana and is done so with passion and a commitment towards quality. Mike and Tricia have a heart to share their knowledge and wisdom with other farmers as well, to build them up and see them become fruitful. There is a push towards bringing the community together and truly getting to know your neighbors. They have gone out of their way to share what they have with others, those who can afford it and to those who have run into hard times. I wish everyone could try their tomatoes, then you'd know what I am talking about, and draw your own conclusion, to this heavenly fruit (I still consider it a vegetable, no matter what). I live on Oahu and so anytime I visit Kona, I make sure I stop at the local open market in Kamuela to buy these. If you're wondering: "Locavore" is a person whose diet consists only or principally of locally grown or produced food. Add a bunch of uniques gift ideas by Big Island artists and life is complete. Located in the heart of old town Hilo on Kilauea Avenue is where you'll find Locavore or as locals will know it's next to Ben Franklin. The staff of Sam and Audrey were genuinely kind and welcoming. I was most impressed with their knowledge of products and pride in what they had to offer. My sister (who I was visiting) purchased fresh non-GMO produce and pickled namasu. Since I was visiting Hilo I chose unique stickers and postcards to take home with me. I really felt a warm peaceful vibe while browsing around The Locavore Store. On a Sunday afternoon it was filled with curious customers. Health conscience hippies, those looking for island arts & crafts, and a few locals living la viva Locavore lifestyle. The farm operates on a sustainable agriculture motto. I like that a lot. The staff is local. The farm is clean and professionally operated. The farm is unique as the mushrooms are grown in bottles utilizing a Japanese method. Lani and Jane took care of the group today. Our first stop was the substrate mixer, autoclave, and bottle cleaning station. Very interesting. Next we moved inside. A very informative video explains the whole process. We were shown the production areas within the plant. The mushrooms are amazing. Everything you thought you knew about eating and cooking mushrooms is about to change. The staff prepared a bountiful selection of their mushrooms. They explained the proper technique to cook mushrooms to gain the most health benefits, and the flavor, wow! We picked up some of the mushroom value added products available. Cookies and tea. The cookies were amazing. The tea will wait until we get home. Will we go again? Of course, when friends come to visit, this will be on the schedule.
