What I appreciated was the farm to table concept, since they supply many restaurants along the Kona coast, with their plump, sweet, non slimy, or gritty tomatoes. Mike and Tricia have read and gained wisdom from the professionals on how you can adjust the sweetness of the tomatoes, which I was dumbfounded and never knew that you could tweak a tomato. This is a business that involves all of the ohana and is done so with passion and a commitment towards quality. Mike and Tricia have a heart to share their knowledge and wisdom with other farmers as well, to build them up and see them become fruitful. There is a push towards bringing the community together and truly getting to know your neighbors. They have gone out of their way to share what they have with others, those who can afford it and to those who have run into hard times. I wish everyone could try their tomatoes, then you'd know what I am talking about, and draw your own conclusion, to this heavenly fruit (I still consider it a vegetable, no matter what). I live on Oahu and so anytime I visit Kona, I make sure I stop at the local open market in Kamuela to buy these. When you go look for the Wow Farm sign and their red palaka shirts, strike up a conversation and enjoy buying some of these delicate treasures. Omg, if you're on Oahu you can get these at the local farmers market on certain day's. Tuesday's and Saturday's Kapiolani Community College Wednesday's at the Neal Blaisdell open market Thursday's at the Kailua open market Sunday's at the Mililani open market This is a great way of supporting local and small businesses! Seriously, it really inspires me to want to become a farmer!

If you're wondering: "Locavore" is a person whose diet consists only or principally of locally grown or produced food. Add a bunch of uniques gift ideas by Big Island artists and life is complete. Located in the heart of old town Hilo on Kilauea Avenue is where you'll find Locavore or as locals will know it's next to Ben Franklin. The staff of Sam and Audrey were genuinely kind and welcoming. I was most impressed with their knowledge of products and pride in what they had to offer. My sister (who I was visiting) purchased fresh non-GMO produce and pickled namasu. Since I was visiting Hilo I chose unique stickers and postcards to take home with me. I really felt a warm peaceful vibe while browsing around The Locavore Store. On a Sunday afternoon it was filled with curious customers. Health conscience hippies, those looking for island arts & crafts, and a few locals living la viva Locavore lifestyle. Did the tour today with a large group from the USDA. Have wanted to stop by before. It was an…read moreearly tour and the weather was great. Everything you expect on the Hamakua coast. The farm operates on a sustainable agriculture motto. I like that a lot. The staff is local. The farm is clean and professionally operated. The farm is unique as the mushrooms are grown in bottles utilizing a Japanese method. Lani and Jane took care of the group today. Our first stop was the substrate mixer, autoclave, and bottle cleaning station. Very interesting. Next we moved inside. A very informative video explains the whole process. We were shown the production areas within the plant. The mushrooms are amazing. Everything you thought you knew about eating and cooking mushrooms is about to change. The staff prepared a bountiful selection of their mushrooms. They explained the proper technique to cook mushrooms to gain the most health benefits, and the flavor, wow! We picked up some of the mushroom value added products available. Cookies and tea. The cookies were amazing. The tea will wait until we get home. Will we go again? Of course, when friends come to visit, this will be on the schedule.
