José Pizarro at Broadgate Circle is a tasty new addition to the area with a well-curated selection of wines by the glass and a range of delicious small plates of food.
Just a few weeks after José Pizarro launched a new restaurant around Liverpool Street station, I was for an event in the area at Boxpark Shoreditch and decided to have a small dinner at this new place. I had never managed to visit one of the other two ventures of José Pizarro, so I was excited to check out this recent opening.
The first thing I noticed was the good wine selection. As far as I can tell, they only offer Spanish wines - but a wide range of Spanish wines, so it is not really a limitation.
The restaurant is beautiful, dominated by an interesting mix of wood and concrete, metal tables and leather seats. Overall, the combination of colours is pleasing the eye, making it a enjoyable to spend time here. To be honest, I did not really like the fishy smell in the air, but I am sure many people will probably like this place even more just because of that.
My meal started - well, it all came kind of at the same time anyway - with croquetas caseras. I must admit, I thought they were a little bit disappointing, lacking flavour or seasoning.
The Ibérico pork meatballs on the other hand were tasty, especially the slightly spicy tomato and orange sauce. I never had that combination of spicy tomato and orange and it worked very well for me.
Next up was pan con tomate, a simple classic. I am often not a big fan of tomato, for example on burgers, but here with the olive oil, everything came together beautifully.
The lovely meatball sauce also helped spicing up the croquetas caseras, which actually tasted very nice with the sauce.
While browsing through the wine list, I was happy to see that you can get quite a few of the wines by the glass. One option sounded particularly interesting, the TerraPrima Blanco from the Can Ràfols Del Caus estate. I decided to give it a try, because I've never before heard of a Riesling from Spain. This wine is 85% Xarel·lo, I grape variety I didn't know, and 15% Riesling. The wine was truly brilliant with a bold freshness and distinctive mineral notes. After reading a little bit about this wine, I learned that the chalky soil surely contributed to this characteristic flavour. A surprising find and a very interesting take on Riesling.
When it was time for a dessert, I quickly selected the chocolate with olive oil & salt, on toast. It sounded intriguing, but I did not quite know what to expect. The plate was dressed beautifully when it arrived and the dish tasted great. Thin, crispy slices of toasted bread added the needed crunch to complement the strong chocolate. The olive oil also blended nicely with the other ingredients. For a dessert, it was pretty salty, but that probably also made it more interesting.
My wine proved to be a good choice not only for my other dishes, but also in combination with the rich flavours of the dessert.
The service at José Pizarro was friendly and very attentive from start to end. Definitely a great place for dinner, small bites or just a glass of wine. read more
