He did my minuscus mess knee, painless, quick recovery, best outcome. I wish he'd done my hand. I went to a Harvard trained doctor for my hand and it was a mess. I wouldn't mind him doing my other knee and rotator cuff shoulder, but he says I don't need it at least not yet. Don't see Dr. Cheng if on Medi-Cal. In early 2016, Dr. Cheng gas-lit me into thinking that the symptoms of my ACL graft failure were due to not doing physical therapy well. Six years later, I have severe osteoarthritis because the issue was dismissed. My very brief appointment was one of the quicker knee assessments I've had (anyone who's accurately diagnosed my ACL/meniscus issues before and since took more time). *Somehow* he decided my ACL was stable and he did a McMurray test (only 75% negative predictive value) to determine my meniscus was fine. I've never reported pain on any knee test in which subjective pain was an indicator, it's like years of injury have desensitized me. He made it sound like the issue was weak muscles and that my knee wasn't worth imagery until improved muscular performance ruled that out as an issue. But I had told him the ongoing inflammation in my knee made it hard for me to progress in the physical therapy exercises I was doing (the visit was 16 months after the ACL surgery), and it had been bad since 3-4 months after the surgery. (I later learned that ACL graft is weakest 2-4 months after surgery. Now, I'm pretty sure that's when I stretched it out to failure.) I did thoroughly dedicate myself to exercises after the appointment. My knee did grow less inflamed, but that's because muscle, not the ligament or cartilage, was stabilizing the knee. When it was occasionally unstable, I thought of how I wasn't good enough at some exercises (in retrospect, probably because my lax ACL, torn meniscus, and clumsiness prevented great form). In 2021, osteoarthritis symptoms arose and I finally saw another doctor, who diagnosed my longstanding problems. My second ACL surgery showed bone rubbing on bone. Because the cartilage has been shredded by years of high activity with no ACL support, it can be painful to walk, I have to change careers, and I'm looking at a partial knee replacement before the age of 40. This could have been prevented if Dr. Cheng had thoroughly listened, taken more time with more tests, okayed an MRI, and/or not shown himself to be a patronizing, gaslighting guy who wanted to make a Medi-Cal appointment as quick as possible. read more

I was referred to Dr. Cheng for sudden debilitating back/leg pain in early 2020 - I could not walk or sit, and as a person in my mid-30s with two young children and a physically demanding teaching job this was crushing. I could only lie in bed, and it had been weeks. He took X-Rays (but no MRI) and told me surgery was not an option. He prescribed steroids which helped me walk again, but I lost significant function in my leg. The following year I switched to Stanford Orthopedic care, and my herniated disc (visible on an MRI) was immediately diagnosed. I had a discectomy and my pain has been completely resolved, but my function may never fully return because it was so long after the original injury. I'm writing to hopefully help people who may be in a similar boat - if you feel dissatisfied with Dr. Cheng's care, PLEASE get another opinion as soon as possible. read more

I had a work related injury in 2017 that stopped me dead in my tracks. I had played sports all my life and never had any injuries. MRI's and Xrays on my shoulder only showed inflammation. In 2018 the first doctor I worked with said she was going to shave the collarbone to make room for the inflammation. While in surgery, she discovered 2 tears in my rotator cuff, which were repaired. After the process was complete, I was still having pain, instability, and range issues. Every time I saw the doctor and expressed my issues about the shoulder, she said nothing was medically wrong and it was all in my head. So I went back to work, full duty, at a very labor intensive job. I wasn't able to use my right arm the same in any aspect of my life. The pain got worse and worse. In 2022, I was referred to Dr. Cheng. From the moment he examined me, I knew I was in the right place. He listened to me. That was always the hardest part about getting care. We had hoped all issues where because of scar tissue build up, but after surgery, Dr. Cheng informed me I had a Bankart repair. First review? Really? I was referred to Dr. Cheng because my GP, the other Dr. Cheng (his sister, apparently), thought I should see a specialist for my badly sprained ankle. Over the course of a month, I made two visits here and just got the all-clear at today's appointment. The front office staff is really nice and they made special accommodations for my first visit. I was miserable and needed something in my situation to change so I could be more comfortable and be able to function at work and home. They kept the office open a little later than usual and fit me in their schedule. Dr. Cheng checked out my x-rays, tested my range of motion, asked about pain, and made his diagnosis. Afterwards, he listened to my concerns and needs, and offered possible solutions. Unlike other doctors I have seen in the past, he didn't make me feel rushed and really wanted to understand my situation. It felt like we were a team tackling my stubborn sprained ankle. In the end, he fitted me for a walking cast and set me up for a plan that helped me go from crutches + walking cast, to one crutch + walking cast, to just the walking cast. Although most of my recovery should be attributed to my physical therapist, Dr. Cheng was an instrumental player in getting me the walking cast that allowed me to return to work and be more productive around the house until I was well enough to put more force on my ankle. He's very personable and took an immediate interest in what I was doing with my life. I'm young and it was almost like he wanted to take on a parental role -- encouraging me to pursue an MD. Visited on oct 14 '15 The doctor may be good but watch out for the inefficient office management: 1. They overbook appointments for a doctor that spends most of his time at the Operating Room. *** I SHOWED UP 5 MINS BEFORE MY APPT TIME BUT STILL HAD TO WAIT 1.5 HOURS, BEFORE I WALKED OUT, NOT SEEING DR CHENG. AND THEY CHARGED MY CREDIT CARD FOR THE VISIT !! *** 2. Their computer system is always broken -- I got charged even if I walked out after waiting for 1.5 hours and no sight of Dr Cheng. No refund, no receipt/proof of my refundable payment, no appointment reschedule could be made onsite. 3. My credit card got charged for this visit -- with no doctor in sight/no treatment. ** Advice to office staff (and probably dr cheng as a manager): Update your patients in the waiting room about any delays or long waits and offer to re-schedule. You are wasting precious work hours of your patients! There is nothing wrong with being nice to patients who lose their patience and wages for the long wait!! IMHO: At the rate he is seeing patients that day (on/off the hospital), I wasn't sure if I could get proper treatment given the many patient conditions he is hearing. read more

To date, I've had two shoulder surgeries and numerous consults (other body parts) with Dr. Cheng. In the 3-4 years that I've been a patient in his office, I've suffered through a very complicated medical history (unrelated to Dr. Cheng's treatment). Despite the fact that other physicians have turned me away due to my complex medical history, Dr. Cheng has helped me through every diagnosis in a professional and caring manner. First thing a perspective patient should know about Dr. Cheng is that he will always be truthful and thorough. He wants you to understand what's happening with your body and he takes the time to tell you. Secondly, he's not the type of physician to throw pills at your injury. Most physicians/surgeons I've seen want to rush me to surgery or put me on meds. I promise that he will not schedule unnecessary surgeries or over-medicate you. Third, he'll let you know what you should reasonably expect from treatment. I love this because I've had surgeons tell me that my knees/shoulders would feel great post-op only to find that I've increased the likelihood of worsening arthritis or other issues. I visited Dr. Cheng twice in January and February of 2016. I had knee replacements on both knees; but had problem with the left knee. I wanted to get a second opinion and was referred to Dr. Cheng. He checked my bone scan and X-Ray, he also asked for a blood test. At the most recent visit, he told me my knee may have some irritation but nothing to worry about. He released me on that day February 12, 2016. I was concerned about long-term use of Celebrex, a nonsteroidal anti-infammatory drug for pain relief. He told me to gradually reduce its use. Dr Cheng operated on my left knee for a torn meniscus November 2012 and did an excellent job. Now 3 months later I have no pain and my knee seems to be working as it should. I strongly recommend Dr Cheng for his professionalism and the staff at his surgery where the operation was performed I had recently moved to the Bay area, hurt my knee and was in a lot of pain when I walked. I had checked out a couple of other local Dr's and either I did not feel comfortable with them or they were not in my medical plan I already had the results of a MRI on my knee and my neighbor who is an attorney recommended that I go see Dr Cheng as he had an excellent reputation around her office. I called his office to make my 1st appointment to see him on the Monday, he saw me a day later and operated on me on the Friday of the same week. During the consultation leading up to the surgery I found him to be very personable, he asked the right questions and I believed him to be very decisive. He made me feel very comfortable and I just felt he was going to do a good job for me. On the day of the surgery the nursing staff at the San Leandro hospital were really great. They told me what and why they were sticking needles in me in preparation for the surgery and answered all my questions. The surgery went real well and because I am really a big wus I asked for the strongest pain pills in case I was going to be in a world of pain that night during the healing process. I got home, followed my instructions given to me by the nurse, iced my knee on a regular basis and was amazed that I HAD NO PAIN WHAT SO EVER and did not need to take any pain killers. During the healing time I was really scared that I was going to mess the surgery up if I put pressure on my knee. So for a couple of days I was really really careful how I supported the knee when I walked anywhere. My follow up meeting with Dr Cheng went well and he told me what I could and could not do. Initially I was off work for a couple of weeks, I then returned to work working just 4 hours per day for a month. During this time I still experienced no pain Now a couple of months later my knee is working as it should again. I went to Dr Cheng with a complicated broken ankle. Dr Cheng was always very busy and never took the time to tell me what to do and what not to do. He was always runing late. I am a 60 year old woman who fractured 3 bones in my right ankle. My left leg was injured as a child so i could not get around very easily. Dr Cheng operated on my ankle, put in a lot of hardware and sent me home a couple of hours later. I had to figure out how to get into my house, up the stairs. My next visit he looked at my wound and it was wide open and wet from something draining, he gave me antibiotics. Somehow I reinjured the ankle and was operated on again. I am not sure what he did during that operation. But he referred me to another doctor. I ended up with a staff infection in the bones of the ankle. So When all is said and done it will be close to 10 or more months before I walk. I will need one more operation to fuse the ankle. The problem I have with Dr. Cheng is being a 60 year old woman he should have took the time to talk to me on how to take care of the injury. Or had one of his receptionist talk to me. I do not feel I was taken care of, and I am suffering the consequences still. He was always talking about his next patient, or the fact he was late for a speech he had to make. I just had medial meniscus (knee) surgery done by Dr. Cheng in May. Fast, friendly and flawless process; start to finish. Day of surgery process was super slick and effective. From registration to discharge; 3.5 hours, his surgery center was like a finely oiled machine. Results have been pretty amazing. First off; I had no pain afterwards. I kept waiting for the surgery meds to wear off and to have to take pain pills. Pain never kicked in. I never took the pain pills I was prescribed. I only took Ibuprofen afterwards because I (and my wife) knew that ibuprofen helps to reduce swelling, which I needed to do after surgery. I was on two crutches for two days, one crutch for one day, off the crutches and hopping about on day four, and on day seven I returned the crutches to Dr. Cheng's office. The obvious and painful symptoms of my torn meniscus are gone. Its now been four weeks, and just like Dr. Cheng promised, I've been able to (slowly) start running again. My only concern is that I still get some clicking noises in my knee when I'm just walking around. Hopeful that those will soon go away, or at least not get any worse. I would like to start with when I found Dr. Cheng I had a hard time walking. That was 5 years ago and 3 knee surgeries ago. Now I am back to work and living my live again that I never thought I could. I can't tell you that I am pain free or I don't have issue, because I do. What I can say is, I was using a cane to walk when I met Dr. Cheng and now I am walking on my own. He has the best bedside manners and never gives up on you.
