Dr Hughes, I first want to tell you how truly grateful I am for everything you did for me with the PRP injection and the stem cell therapy! As far as my shoulder goes--AMAZING!! He is a very smart wonderful Doctor. I had bone marrow stem cells put into my lower back & both knees & there was no pain involved & my back & legs feel so much better. Dr. Hughs was pretty awesome...super informative, personable and knows his stuff!! I went in for chronic severe shoulder pain... he took x-rays, where he unfortunately discovered arthritis which he said is probably what's causing my frozen shoulder. He gave me a cortisone shot which I said I would never get but my pain has kept me from getting a restful sleep for months now, so I went for it. He wanted to prescribe me physical therapy which would have been great but I unfortunately I do not have insurance... he did not judge me but instead gave me 3 page print outs of shoulder exercises to do at home. I have had torn cartilage, meniscus and pain in my knees for almost 10 years. I was in pain almost every single day and could barely walk for 10 mins without having to ice my knees. Where do I start? I am just about 4 months post-op for my second total knee replacement surgery and I have had no issues with either my surgery or my recovery. I am 100% better than I was prior to my surgeries. I should tell you that this is my second total knee replacement done by Dr. Hughes in the last 1-1/2 year. Prior to surgeries I was walking with a cane, was in constant pain, using whatever meds would alleviate the pain but after having the Conformis Knee Replacement that was recommended by Dr. Hughes, I feel 100% better. No cane, no meds to alleviate the constant pain and getting around very well. I cannot stress the ease of having the Conformis Knee Replacement surgery. It was out-patient surgery, no hospital stay, knee is custom made to your body for a better fit than standard knee replacement so less problems. If you are thinking about knee replacement surgery, I would suggest that you seriously consider the Conformis Knee Replacement as an option. As a longtime patient of Dr. Paul Hughes, I was disappointed and sad when his business model switched to Fee For Service as of January 1, 2024, severing contractual ties with all forms of medical insurance, including Medicare, and without advance notice to his existing patients.I would like to preface this by saying I wholeheartedly respect and have deep admiration for all medical professionals. They deserve to be fairly compensated for their knowledge, skill, performance, educational background, etc. But, not to the detriment of the patients under theircare.In 2021 at age 45, I had a Total Left Hip Replacement for congenital hip dysplasia performed by Dr. Hughes. This was not an easy recovery for me in part because I was not fully prepared withall the information I needed to have a smooth recovery. I had poor post op pain management and delayed wound healing with a gaping dent in my thigh. The Stryker implant used produced a "grinding, squeaking, scraping" noise accompanied by pain and discomfort. These symptoms were discussed with Dr. Hughes on a number of occasions between late November, 2021through late December, 2023. Initially, he gave me a cortisone injection, did an Xray in the office, and offered to do a BMAC which is not covered by insurance. He stated that it was also possible that a tendon in my thigh needed to be "surgically released", or that I could consider having a Revision of the left hip surgery. I pressed on and prayed that my symptoms would improve over time as I continued to recover. There was no way I wanted to go through another hip surgery without knowing the root cause of the complications I was experiencing.Fast forward to the Fall, 2023 and I continued to have pain, discomfort, noise, and unsteadiness in the left hip. I was still struggling. Adding to the pain, squeaking and grinding in my left hip, I now had severe back pain on my left side. Again, I consulted with Dr. Hughes. He ordered a Bone Scan of the affected hip, as well as a Lumbar MRI, in hopes of determining if the implant wasokay and/or if something in my back was the issue. By now, it's mid-December, 2023. I had the Bone Scan and Lumbar MRI done and circled back to schedule a follow-up appointment to discuss the results. There were no appointments until January, which would have been fine, except I was informed that I would have to pay $450 out of pocket to see Dr. Hughes in his office. Needless to say, I didn't see Dr. Hughes and I never received the results (from him) of thescans that he ordered in December, despite messaging through Sutter portal and leaving messages with his office. No one ever returned my call. I had no clue what was going on with my left hip and back.In early 2024, I found a new team of surgeons to help me. I learned that there were multiple issues causing the symptoms I was experiencing in my hip/back. As a result of the initial hipsurgery performed by Dr. Hughes, my left leg was longer than the right leg. This caused my gait to be off and increased my back pain. By this time, I've been walking around in pain for 2.5 years. More importantly, it was discovered that the cup of the implant was placed in an overly anteverted position in my hip socket, causing the grinding/squeaking of the femoral head of the implant against the cup of the implant. This was confirmed with imaging that displayed abnormal wear of both the cup and femoral head.I was at risk for impingement and/or dislocation, and had to undergo a total revision left hip replacement. During the revision surgery, it was discovered that I had severe Metallosis; metal poisoning in my hip and surrounding tissues. My hip was completely black inside as a result of metal shavings from the implant grinding and squeaking for over 2 years.I am currently recovering from my revision surgery and symptoms associated with Metallosis.It was disappointing to experience the decline in care and communication with Dr. Hughes, especially after having four successful surgeries performed by him in the past. read more

My mom sent me a text that yesterday was the 4 year anniversary of my 1st surgery. I have to update my review of Dr. Paul Hughes because that man changed my life. He literally gave me a second chance at walking and my hip is feeling better than ever. There was 1 time where I had to run to catch a bus and my hip finally was reset (think of resetting a dislocated shoulder). After that, my walking significantly improved to where I can now go on multi-hour hikes throughout The City. I no longer take daily Ibuprofen or CBD or have any serious discomfort. Having your hip reconstructed via stem cells doesn't restore everything to new (there's still discomfort) but I'm not in pain. I can balance on one leg-the repaired one-without pain. My leg is still getting stronger from a year on crutches, 2 surgeries and atrophy but the improvement can be measured every day. What a year 2020 has been -- shoulder surgery in Feb for a SLAP tear, which involves relocating where your bicep is attached from your shoulder to high up on your humerus (upper arm), and then knee surgery to repair a torn miniscus. Each time Dr. Hughes went in and not only took care of the main issue but looked around while he was in there and cleaned stuff up. He warned me up front that shoulders take a while to really get back to normal -- I thought a month or two max but it really does take 7-9 months even with physical therapy. The knee, though, I was up and around in a few days. Dr. Hughes did great. Checked in on my along the way. You can assume that since I went back to him for my knee that the shoulder went well. All good with the knee, too. read more

He's excellent at his job and he's very charismatic and really goes into depth about what and how he's going to go about getting you back to 100 percent. I had a hip joining surgery 6 weeks before my knee surgery, and had no complications. The nightmares literally started right after my 2nd surgery bilateral knee surgery. When I was still in the surgery center not fully awake, Dr Hugh gave me a prescription list for aspirin. I had emailed and asked his team numerous time that for any prescriptions, they really needed to give it to me before the surgery since no one else can help me to get it after the surgery. Of course he gave me another prescription right after the surgery when I couldn't move or function! Then the real nightmare started when I started to have excruciating pain the day after the 2nd surgery. I immediately called the anesthesiologist and emailed Dr. Hugh. Th anesthesiologist finally returned my call after 4 hours and at that time, reveals the Dr. Hugh was "afraid of complication and wanted to limit liability, he didn't give me the block numing medication like what he did for me in the first surgery". When I asked him when Dr. Hugh when will return my call, he said" The office is now close. Just take the pain and hopefully someone call call you on Monday." 3 days went by and remember I was in this crazy amount of pain. I coudn't even move an inch of my body due to the pain. I couldn't eat, get out of the bed, nothing. I couldn't function as a human. Finally Monday arrived the doc office called me and let me go in that day and gave me a pain relief shot. During this visit , Dr Hughs decided to send a nurse to my house to give me another shot in couple days. I said great. Guess what?? The nurse showed up at my house without any medication or shot. Apparently the doctor was supposed to give it to either the nurse or me ahead of time. But, of course, he didn't do that. So the nurse wasted the trip and went home and I was still in pain! What did I learn from this whole week of torture? Doc Hugh and his staff are not professional, he and his staff doesn't listen or try communicate the patients. You have to hope nothing goes wrong, Because if something goes wrong, he has no patience and is stretched to this to help, further he has no empathy for patients and their pain. He is also a poor communicator with the patient. Every time when I tried to explain to him that I was in severe pain, he always dismiss me like I was complaining too much, "I never met anyone like you who complains so much about this pain". I felt like one of the lab rats. Since I just had the hip joint surgery I know that every surgery is different. In this case I needed more support than in previous surgery (since I was doing both knee!). It wasn't that I was being overly sensitive. I never felt he generally cared about how I was feeling at that time. I would not recommend him to anyone. read more

This 'doctor' is some piece work. This is a man who is so pissed off at the medical establishment in the US that he takes it out on his prospective patients. He was obviously upset that I spent 5 months in a nursing home recently and decided that I didn't heal well and as such he immediately dismissed any thought of surgery when two other competent doctors actually took the time to look at the hospital records about my hospitalization but of course this bully and the 'punk' ' is so intimidated by the insurance companies he is afraid of his own shadow. This so called 'Doctor' obviously was absent the day they taught bed-side manner but that doesn't surprise me due w the arrogant nature of this 'doctor' as well as I believe he has no idea what the the meaning of the word 'EMPATHY' means! I had a right shoulder arthroscopy with labral repair done by Dr. Hughes about 4 months ago. I've read many mixed reviews about Dr. Hughes but my take is that he's very knowledgeable and does great work. Although the recovery time is a full year, this is the first time in 8 years I haven't had shoulder pain. His delivery may seem blunt but the reality is he is just being clear! I have enjoyed all my visits, think his team is wonderful, and I'm glad to be feeling as good as new. If you leave feeling confused or unsure, you can call and touch base again and discuss more about it. He's a talented surgeon (my dermatologist told me the scar looked "beautiful") and has a good style about him - hes thoughtful and profound - but at the same time no nonsense and definitely knows what he is talking about. He will 100% find you a solution or find somebody who can help if he cant. The surgery went easy and was super low key - and the rehab/physical therapy has gone off without a hitch - I'm already back playing competitive indoor soccer at a top level. So fortunate to have met Dr. Paul Hughes! He has basically changed my life! I was dreading the fact that inevitably I was going to require double knee replacements as my mother had. A friend of mine told me that I should get a second opinion and referred me to Dr. Hughes. During my initial consultation he mentioned that I could possibly benefit by a fairly new procedure which extracts my bone marrow concentrate and it's injected into my knees. He also indicated, this procedure could potentially regenerate my cartilage and improve the functionality of my knees. I figured that I had nothing to lose and I wanted to avoid any type of surgery. I had the in-office procedure performed approximately nine months ago (November 2021). To my surprise, there has been significant improvement in the functionality of my knees!!! In addition to physical therapy, the procedure, exercise and losing weight, I feel like I'm a new person. I can now go up and down stairs effortlessly. I used to avoid just getting up from sitting because it was a struggle. Not anymore! I had a deformed arm, which should have had surgery from the very begining. "I" was looking for Functionallity "and" a decent looking arm. "Yes", that is obviously an option. Why dont "you" go through life with a deformed arm?? People, kept asking me..."hey, whats the deal with your arm, why does it look like that?" You took an oath to "do no harm" and by trying to intimidate me into believing that "functionallity" was the best I was going to get, well, you broke that oath. You should be ashamed of yourself, but of course, people like you are incapable of that. I have recovered well after I kept fighting system. My arm is now straight & healed. The Surgery was done by a "True" Doctor, who takes his oath seriously, & it cost the insurance company 5 times as much. Dr Hughes examined me briefly ( less than 5 minutes, maybe even less than 3 minutes). He said I had an agrravatted patella. I think becasue he saw there was no surgery to be had, he was then dismissive at best, and negligent at worst. What a cool dude. He's a "get after it" type. I went in with a rotator cuff issue that was causing pain. He suggested the cortisone shot and boom, out came the needle. I didn't have time to gulp :) I appreciate the instant relief attempt. (It's been a few hours now and it seems to feel better). Anyway, the last time I went to an orthopedic surgeon they gave me two options...surgery and surgery. Dr. Hughes asked pointed questions to figure out what my problem was.
