I went to Joseph Christopher Salon before a family event where I was the guest of honor. My appointment was scheduled with Idalia. When I arrived, I showed her a photo of the hairstyle I wanted--a simple blowout with big, wavy curls, which I've had done many times before. I explained that my hair usually holds curls well and doesn't require much product, but she still used a large amount of hairspray while styling. Throughout the appointment, I was facing away from the mirror, so I couldn't see the progress. When I was finally turned around, I was very disappointed. There were barely any curls, and the few that were there were only at the ends and already falling out. I have medium-length hair, and the appointment took about an hour and twenty minutes. I asked several times for her to re-curl my hair, but despite trying, she was unable to achieve the basic style I had requested. By the time I got home--just five minutes away--my hair had almost completely fallen flat. We called the salon to express my frustration, and they offered for me to return about 30 minutes later to fix it. When I went back, I was assigned a different stylist, who admitted she could only do so much given the condition of my hair but would try her best. Unfortunately, I ended up being late to my own event, and my hair still did not look close to what I had asked for. I later called the salon to speak with management, but after two weeks, I never received a call back. I purchased a gift card from this salon for a massage. When my wife called to schedule, she was told they no longer offer massages--despite still having sold the gift card for that exact service. I have called multiple times requesting a refund. Each time, the receptionist took my information and said management would follow up. No one ever did. At this point, this feels less like poor customer service and more like knowingly taking money for services you don't provide and then avoiding refund requests. If this is not resolved immediately, I will be filing a formal complaint with consumer protection authorities. I strongly advise others not to purchase gift cards here, as there is no accountability once they have your money. read more

I have thick, wavy hair... why would fringe bangs cut an inch above my eyebrows be a good idea??? They're not evenly cut either. He also cut my hair in a weird U-shape at the bottom. All I wanted was for existing side bangs to be blended with old side bangs that my former stylist had left out. He upsold me, as well, telling me that he needed to blend all of my hair into the old cut. $135.00 later ($110.00 plus tips). Never ever again!! read more

This past week I was delighted to have an exceptional blowout by Robin who took the time to experiment with several curling styles to achieve what was an absolutely lovely soft look that held for days and days. I wish I could give them no stars. I have called and left messages for Doris several times this week - no call back from her. I now, thanks to my credit card people, know how she perpetrates the scam. She manually enters all recurring Indulgence charges - that way the credit card companies don't consider the charges to be recurring, and therefore cannot block Joseph Christopher from charging again. You either have to dispute the charge or cancel your card. This is totally unacceptable, not to mention fraudulent. This could all have been avoided if they believed in customer service, stopped the charging of my card as I requested, and just called me back. BTW - the Indulgence Club with its discount only brings their prices down to what the competition charges just barely. STAY AWAY - RUN. read more

I will still go to Joseph Christopher's for Salon and Spa services, but will avoid a certain esthetician (Florentina) at all costs! I've been coming here for facials for quite a few years and have had great estheticians who are friendly, as gentle as can be, and professional. Granted, the best ones seem to leave, so I never really get the same person twice, but I trust that everyone working there is just as professional and accommodating as the last one. Until yesterday! I don't know if this lady was running behind her schedule or just having a bad day, but I've never had anyone actually complain about having to work on my skin! I know my skin is far from perfect, but she made me feel like there was no hope for me! "A facial isn't enough for you" "I can't get to this all" "I don't even know what products can help you..." Can you imagine how this made me feel while lying there, hoping to relax a little and leave with a refreshed face? I'm mortified! I can't even believe I'm sharing this with you all, except that no one should go to a spa and come out feeling worse than when they went in! In all the years I've been going there, I've never met anyone as demeaning and cold. I've been to this place twice so far and I like it very much. There's plenty of parking outside, it's large and roomy inside, it's clean and organized, they give you a complimentary hand massage and neck massage if you want it and as much coffee, tea, or water you can drink at no extra charge. My hairdresser is very talented and extremely knowledgeable for a young woman and the colorist helped guide me towards a color that was perfect for me and just what I was looking for. Everyone is nice, especially my hairdresser (and she remembers me and everything we talked about the last time I was there which is very very nice!!). I will be going back. But I have a few hangups. First, I have to say that the first time I went in I looked nice and had my ass kissed a little. The second time I went I was exhausted and on the run (new baby at home) and had some jeans and a T-shirt with sneakers and the owners wife didn't even acknowledge me even after looking me right in the eyes. Really? Shallow much? Second, the bathroom is extremely dark. I mean, extremely dark. The L.E.D. nightlight in my son's room lights up the room better than the light fixture, if you can even call it that (it's more of a sconce on the wall that was meant to be for accent lighting- NOT MAIN LIGHTING). The first time I used the bathroom I had to flip the switch on and off a few times because I wasn't even sure I turned the light on. Next time I go I'll have to bring my small emergency LED flashlight to check and see if the toilet seat is even clean. And I don't know who the genius is that decided to make everything in the bathroom BLACK on top of it including the toilet and the garbage can. And why doesn't this bathroom have a mirror??? That to me is the most bizarre thing I've seen in any establishment's bathroom- especially a HAIR SALON. Even Dunkin Donuts has a mirror in their bathrooms. If you're the owner reading this, please fix the lighting and get a mirror in there or I'm going to continue to assume that you're trying to avoid or hide something and I'm not sure I'll come back after a third time. Third, the hairdresser and colorist do a "hair and scalp analysis" and spend maybe ten minutes taking to you about what they think would benefit you. But I'm a creature of habit. Do we really need to do this every time? Just ask me, "Are we doing anything different today from your last visit?" If the answer is, "No," then get on with it a cut and color my hair please and get me out of there. I need to get back home to my son! Lastly, tipping your girls. They recommend a 20% tip that gets divided between your colorist and your hairdresser. I'm sorry but I'm not tipping $40. You can forget it. That's totally ridiculous. And to even suggest a 20% tip or ask me how much I want to tip at checkout makes me very very uncomfortable and embarrassed because I have to have a conversation OUT LOUD with the cashier about how much I'm willing to spend on tip and be secretly judged by those that may be within earshot. Actually, I think it's rude. Ring me up, give me my receipt, and on the "Tip" line on the receipt, I will fill in how much tip I'd like to leave which should always be divided evenly between my two girls. Oh, and by the way, when I asked the cashier how much a 10% tip would be in my bill, her jaw dropped and her eyes popped as if she'd just seen a tarantula fall on her arm. In her head she must have been saying, "Oh my, only a $10 tip per girl for an hour!s worth of work? That's terrible!" Really? Give me a break. Now I'm going to have to tip cash and hopefully they give me little envelope that I can lick shut so I can privately tip my girls. Because they aren't allowed to accept cash in hand. I lived across the street from this location for over 10 years and visited every few years in hopes that this place would improve - IT NEVER DID. (I moved a few months ago and went in August as a last ditch try). My first experience had been a blowout and at that time, they were very rude about me taking advantage of their advertised special and tried to make me feel obligated into buying products because they were giving me a deal. Why give advertise a special to get customers in the door and then treat them badly for not allowing you to make money back with products? I didn't go back for about 3-4 years. The next time, I got a bang trim because I thought this was simple - nope, rude again and acted as if I wasn't spending enough. None of that was really surprising..but the job was horrible! My last and final time was right before I moved, I needed a blow out on a rainy day and my regular stylist got sick so I thought it would be ok to run across the street. They fit me in but I could have done a much better job - my hair curled up about 15 min after leaving and looked terrible. At least no one was rude that time - but again, the skills were lacking. Conclusion: JC has always been a product pushing, over priced and snotty salon with a high turnover and very little skills ...I guess they have their regulars and don't need new business. I've always felt that this place was a lot of fluff and definitely overpriced, especially for Long Beach. I've been there before quite a long time ago and today went back strictly because I was given a gift card. The clinician that provided my service was sweet and did a nice enough job but I didn't feel like I got a true facial. No steam, only warm towels. Facial was good just the same - I reserved for a facial and an "organic facial hair removal". I only requested this because they do not do dermaplane which I prefer. This service consists of waxing your face period. I don't see where they get off calling this an organic treatment. It was done after my facial and hurt like hell. With dermaplane they do your entire face, while removing the dead cells AND and facial hair. Today this waxing was done to the lower part of my face and not my entire face. So right there it's not what it says. Moving on to the payment. When I went on the website the facial was listed at $140.00. With having a 200 dollar gift card I figured what the hell I go for the "organic facial hair removal tx". - which was another $70.00. The two treatments should have cost me $10.00 extra dollars. When I went to the register and given my total I was like what? I had bought a product thinking the treatments were covered. They go on to inform me that they have raised their price for the facial to $175.00. I told them on the website it is listed at $140.00. No offer to honor what they list on their own website. This to me is a bunch of bull and their mistake. They should she honored the stated price on their website. Just checked prior to writing this review and it is still listed at the lower price. Needless to say I will not be going back here. It is all fluff and a lot of BS. Oh and when I went to the counter the first thing they did was place four products in front of me and said "these are recommended to you for your specialized skin care". I bought the one thing (still thinking I was paying the lower price ). Total money grab and the services are lukewarm to say the least. Go to Healing Oasis. They are the real deal. The worst hair cut I have EVER gotten. I have long hair and I usually get a V cut (also known as a stripper V), just one big angle in the back of my hair with long angled curtain bangs that flow with the entire V. I showed the lady at Joseph Christopher pictures of what I want and explained it very well, also adding that I only wanted a little trim. She should have just told me in that moment that she couldn't do what I wanted instead of pretending she could. She proceeded to cut a VERY uneven V in the back that looked more like a U. I looked at it when she was finished and tried to get her to fix it. She tried to fix it but at that point I just wanted her to stop cutting my hair. She blew it dry and then continued to cut AFTER my hair was dry. It is now extremely uneven in the back. I'll also add that my curtain bangs are not angled at all, they are just straight across, and it looks like I have a mullet. I was pretty upset after this haircut (hence this review) that I am going back to my old hairstylist 2 hours away. I just moved to Long Beach and was hoping to find someone closer, but at this point I'd rather take the trip. I will NOT be going back to this salon. Very upsetting. read more

What an AWFUL experience at the Joseph Christopher spa in Long Beach NY. The massage therapist herself was very good , but part of a spa experience is the relaxation and management of the spa before during and after the massage. I was in put for the wrong massage which is an innocent error. Upon waiting in the comfort area workers had no regard for sound, they banged the glasses together that are set out for tea or water. This happened multiple times more than I can write . During the massage I was placed next to the pedicure room and had the luxury of hearing the other women's conversations instead of being able to relax and focus on the massage and spa music . That room ladies next to the pedicure room should NOT be used for massage therapy . It's loud. Here's the best part . Accountability . Upon checking out the blond short hair lady asked me how it was and I responded "unorganized ". She very quickly answered " we are not unorganized here". " To explain disorganization, I started to rattle off a few of the issues that had occurred during my massage. Would you believe that this woman who's in charge of the check in and check out process and whatever else , didn't even acknowledge the complaint. She insisted that the spa "is not unorganized". In that very instance I realized she herself shouldn't be working there as she has acquired no skills in customer service . A simple apology, and acknowledgement that the issues I mentioned would be brought up to managment or even just taken under consideration would have been satisfactory . Instead she was argumentative. Just the type of relaxing experience you want as a Spa. Joseph Christopher spa and salon in Long Beach NY needs major improvements made , especially to their staff. I feel like I have to share the following. I was a recurring customer at the salon/spa. A few weeks ago, I found out a member of my family is really sick the day before an appointment. I left a message explaining the details and gave a list of times I could be available because I could have another family member stay with my sick family member. They did not charge me a penalty, but never called back. I called again from a medical facility, got the machine and left a message. No call back. I called a third time, the person at the front desk was extremely insensitive to the situation and told me the owner would call me back. No call. The services and technicians are great, but I think there is some moral obligation just from a human being standpoint when a customer says "I just found out a parent has lung cancer, but I still need to be presentable for when I am able to work, can you please help me work out these appointments". From a service perspective, go. From just an ethical perspective, please don't say this is okay. If I get any return on this from the salon/spa, I will research a way to post a recording of my appointment history, all the messages and the one interaction on the phone. I recorded all of them. I just hope this does not happen to another person. To be clear, I followed a standard schedule routine before this started and kept the establishment updated multiple times on the progress. I went there for a haircut twice and both times they couldn't make it asymmetric like I asked. It looked alright in the end so I let it be. But those "fancy" shirts that they give you to wear during the haircut are just horrible. I won't come back jut because of them. You can't plan on going anywhere else after that the haircut other than straight to shower. The neck and chest of the shirts are open and the sleeves are short so hair goes everywhere - all over your skin and clothes - which is nasty. Also I took a massage there recently and my masseuse was a very pregnant lady... How can she give a good massage with a good pressure? I asked her to work on my lower back as it hurts and is often tensed but she didnt even touch me there! Her pressure was very asymmetric when she worked with both hands at the same time. And she would forget what she did on one side and would do something different on the other side. The whole hour I couldn't relax thinking when the real massage would begin and it never did. I was satisfied with the services but extremely disappointed with the experience. I had a gift card and told them so over the phone when I made the appointment. When it was time to pay I was told that they wouldn't accept my gift card for the service I had done. I questioned why they wouldn't have told me that when I booked the appointment and the answer was "she must have made a mistake". They then proceeded to tell me that the person who bought the gift card did so during a special promotion so they didn't actually pay the $250 that the card was valued at. How do you say this to a customer?? The appropriate response would have been to acknowledge their error, allow me to pay with the gift card, and retain a customer. Instead, I was so disturbed by the fact that they revealed something they shouldn't have about what the person actually paid for the card. It was insulting to the customer that purchased it and to me, the customer who was trying to use it. Two things to know about me as you read this review: Part 1: I'm a So Cal chick who loves spas. (I even worked at one and dreamed of opening my own!) When I walked in for my appointment, the first of the day, the ambiance was perfect. The receptionist gave a pleasant greeting and offered me water (they serve large glasses of lemon water) or tea (the delicious Aveda blend). The music was spa-appropriate, and the ladies locker room was small but cozy. However, within a few minutes the pop music I assume is for the hair salon was turned on, and BOOM! My soothed spa vibe was broken. Don't get me wrong: this is not a problem exclusive of Joseph Christopher (and once you are taken to the spa-services side you can't hear the pop music), but it is a pet peeve of mine. When I go to a spa, I like to be reminded of that fact and feel blissed out the entire time. Yes, even when I'm merely about to receive a Brazilian wax. Which leads me to part two of this review. 2. I have only been getting wax services "down there" for less than a year. I recently moved to NY from Mexico City, where I used to get waxed every 2-4 weeks with excellent quality hard waxes. I was very concerned that I wouldn't be able to keep up the routine because the costs are higher and I haven't found a place with the same waxes I was used to. Last month I tried a Bliss spa, and was pleased with the results, but it was pricey. I decided to give J.C. a try, and I'm really glad I did! Here's the low down: they do not use hard wax, but rather a soft soy concoction that requires LOTS of strips. And patience. And time. However, I don't think I have EVER had a more meticulous esthetician. (Maria was amazing!) I'll definitely be back, but I'll make sure that I expect to take 40 minutes to an hour from walking in (and sipping tea) to walking out. read more

worst experience ever. I was excited to try the salon after so many years especially because Aveda products are so natural and organic. After having an allergic reaction elsewhere I described what happened and the color applied was uneven giving me a red root. It had to be " corrected" and reapplied. The root remained red after 2 applications within 3 hours. This was horrible especially after telling them of the my previous allergic reaction elsewhere. Having color applied twice within 3 hours to someone who had an allergic reaction not only causes anxiety but is very very upsetting. Needless to say I walked out with red roots on dark brown hair. They only extended 20% off because I complained and did not offer to redo in a week or so. Very unprofessional. Poor results. Save your money and go somewhere else. read more

I used to come here all the time - twice a month, for about 6 years, and I always saw the same person. I'm talking, I was a strict regular, and they knew that when she wasn't there, they would call me to see if I wanted to reschedule. A few months ago, they fired her. I'm not going to speculate why, but instead of telling me they pretended she was sick and let someone else take care of me. It made me really mad they didn't come clean with me and see if I wanted to still stick around. Based on that, I just find their business ethics crappy - along with some of the other things I've heard from some of the girls that work there. Hi - I would like to tell you about my experience at Joseph Christopher Salon Spa on Sunday - the facial was ok - nothing special - but the young lady who did my facial spent ten - fifteen minutes trying to sell me an upgrade instead of starting the facial - she wasted 10-15 minutes trying to upgrade me - I agreed to an upgrade and she ended ten minutes early - So my facial was one half hour - I used to come here all time time - the change in personnel and this reason, is why I stopped coming to Joseph Christopher years ago. I tried giving them another chance, but they failed. It's too bad, because we need a place like this in Long Beach, its the only place in town. read more

My review is for the spa portion only. I have not tried any of the services at the salon as of yet. I have tried two of their services: - Elemental Nature Massage - Hot Rock Massage Both were great! My favorite was the first one, and I think it's because I just really liked the particular massage therapist's style - Allison. She was fantastic. I have Degenerative Disc Disease in my neck which causes a lot of tension in my neck, back and shoulders. I walked out of there feeling absolutely no tension, a fantastic feeling. Even though I had a really bad experience here, I'm giving it 2 stars instead of 1 to be fair. The reason for that is that it was my fault for investigating this salon more before booking an appointment. The experience I am referring to happened months ago, but I'm posting this now because I finally got my hair fixed by someone else and she claims it's extremely damaged and was difficult to color correct. I do not want to use the hairdresser's name on here, but she knows who she is and completely botched my hair. I showed her a reference picture of what I wanted and even explained what to do, but it seems there was some kind of miscommunication. I got blonde balayage, and it seems like she put the blonde where the darker spots are supposed to go and vise versa. For example, the hair framing my face was left brown (that's the most important part and I thought it was common knowledge to do that part light). To make matters worse, the hair dresser noticed an error in my hair but chose to ignore it and let me leave looking like that. When my hair was being dried by someone else, I noticed her look at the back of my head and make a concerned face, then she grabbed the hair dresser and showed her. Her response was "oh it's fine". I guess it's my fault for not saying anything in the moment, but I was already there for 4 hours at that point and just wanted to go home. When I got home, I noticed that what the woman was referring to were blotches of brown dye in the blonde areas of my hair. I haven't been able to wear my hair down in months, due to these horrible blotches. I am not the type to write reviews, but I reached out with my concerns and nothing was done about it. I also find it appalling that my hair dresser clearly saw her mistake, but chose to ignore it and allow me to leave with a head full of blotches. The icing on the cake for this experience was the price. I examined the prices beforehand and expected to spend at MOST $400. When I got to the register to pay, I literally almost passed out when they told me it was $800. It was so humiliating, but I didn't even have that much in my checking at the time and had to transfer it over. I then examined my receipt, and they charged me for ridiculous things like "extra bowl" and "extra dye". I understand that add ons cost extra, but these add ons were added without my consent. If I would have known how much extra it was, I would have said no, but she didn't give me the option. Please beware of this place and only go if you trust who's doing your hair and you're well off financially. This place will rob you read more
