As far as a nursing home and assisted living center Josephine home is A+ rating. We have had our parents there for over 5 years. They started out in the 2 bedroom suites and then when mom passed, dad moved to a studio suite. He is in a wheelchair and needs assistance so that was all a very easy transition for him. If he later needs more care it is added and we know that he can go to the full care area later on. The thing I notice the most is that it doesn't have the terrible smells that other homes have. (The nursing home smell) That is important, cuz it means they are clean. We appreciate that. So we are happy to know that he's getting good care there. Especially with the COVID-19. They have been very careful and safe with the residents there. We can now schedule an appointment to see him outside for 30 minutes. That is nice. read more

I had THE BEST EXPERIENCE here! Even with isolation! Rehab floor... EVERYONE was beyond Lovely! Social worker. Brion, went out of his way to help, as did every staff member. Friends for life! Kris, Nurse Megan, hskg Jill......too many to mention! The food people prepared me special eggs, salads....... cannot recommend them enough BTW..... I have been in 3 other rehabs and cannot say much of anything nice about them! read more

Josephine Caring Community has been a wonderful place for my family. My parents have lived there for over 2 years now. My Mother still lives in the Suites section and my Dad was in Memory Care for several months before he passed. Both of them have spent time in the rehab section after hospital stays. The staff members are lovely and invested in this community. I don't think they have a lot of turnover. The facility is always clean. Because this facility is large, you do have to work to establish good lines of communication. But once we had established those relationships with the staff, it has gone very smoothly with few bumps. Even though it is a bit of a drive to get there, it is worth it. All of the services you need are within a couple of minutes- so it is easy to take care of anything your loved one needs. I feel very comfortable with the care and attention my parents have had at Josephine. No place will replace their home, but this place sure does come close. read more

Nursing homes get a lot of grief from people who don't actually see the ins and outs of what goes on when no one's around. I've had several loved ones stay here and they were all extremely well taken care of. The nurses and staff are amazing and incredibly loving. read more

My parents had to move into assisted living over the summer, and this was where they chose to move since it is in their community. Just a few weeks before their scheduled move, my sweet Mother had a stroke, and landed in the Saratoga Rehab wing. She was there for over 2 months. My mom had everything against her, health wise when she went there. Stage 2 kidney failure, a leaking aortic aneurysm, and now a spinal stroke that the Drs said left her permanently paralyzed from the waist down. I am their youngest daughter, and living across the country. I was blessed to be able to stay with them from July 28 through the middle of November to help them move and then advocate and care for my mom. We knew that her time on earth was short, but while in rehab, the physical therapists had her up and taking steps with assistance and a walker! She defied all odds with their help, and the cheerleading of all of the staff there, especially the amazing aids, therapists and the nurses.. They were so encouraging and I will never forget the love that they showed to her, as well as the other residents there. Unfortunately my mom developed (the dr predicted) pneumonia and landed in the hospital mid September. She was literally dying and didn't eat for a week at Providence hospital, and we took her back to Josephines to spend her last days... THE morning after bringing her back, I walked into her room and one of her aids had her sitting up and was feeding her! The first food in a week!! She was so kind with her... Mom rallied for several weeks, but unfortunately her body shut down at the end of October and she passed away. I was there with her till the end, and the compassion and love from the nurses and aids as they came by to see her that last day was comforting to all of us. Having your loved ones in a nursing home is not a joyous time, no matter how you look at it, but the staff made it as loving as possible. I can't emphasize enough how IMPORTANT it is for family to be involved and engage to advocate!! You can't drop your parents off and ignore them and then complain about details in their care when you have not done anything to help them.. The caregivers do their best, but family involvement is critical for personalized help. My mom never would complain or ask for help, that's how she was. If you can't be nearby, hire someone to spend some time there with them and advocate for them.. Also at the suites where my dad lives now, the staff are FANTASTIC!! My dad is pretty independent, (he still drives) but they check on him regularly and make sure he is eating, etc. While he is grieving, they even bring his meals to him if he doesn't show up.. I can't say enough about Sheila and Leanne in the suites, also Thomas, Stephanie and Sheila (aids) as well as countless others.. also Pastor Andy, who I consistently saw all over the complex, either counseling residents, eating with them, singing with them, praying with them.. cleaning up after them... This place conjures up the nightmarish images of nursing homes of the past, where people "park"loved ones waiting for them to die. Our dad was there 10 days. He never saw a doctor, or in his recollection the head nurse. He slept in a wheelchair writhing in pain every night. They loaded him with narcotics so he could barely talk. His legs swelled with 40 pounds of water weight. We paid $450 a night for this lack of care (because he was only in the hospital 2 nights, not 3 before arrival.) The money would have been much better spent going to the Four Seasons, where there is also no medical care, but the beds and food are better. His kids intervened and whisked him to Vermont where he entered Grace Cottage. This place and their doctors and nurses saved his life. Within 48 hours, he was himself again, he'd lost 40 pounds, he was sleeping in a bed, and he was off the narcotics. He plans to come back to Camano Island soon. We are thankful that we were able to get him better care even if we had to leave the area to do it. Medical experts say that if he'd stayed 7 days more, we wouldn't have him around. Our familly if working overtime to see if there is a place in the Northwest that actually provides medical care for older people who are suffering. read more

Montessori Preschool Program at Josephine Sunset Home: I was really impressed by what the director of the program told me and I had previously had my child in Montessori so I put him in the program after only a quick tour and meeting with the instructor. My initial impression was a little weird, the kids did not seem really happy or friendly. I shrugged off my initial gut feeling because kids are kids and they are not always "on". After the first day of Class my child said, "I don't want to go back there mom, ever!" I tried to ask questions and got nothing from my child or any feedback from the teacher when we went back for school the next time. The teacher said he was a little slow but he will warm up and that is all I got in terms of a report from her. The morning of the next school day my child refused to get ready, dumped toys on the floor of living room so we would be late and even DELIBERATELY MADE HIMSELF SICK SO HE WOULD NOT HAVE TO GO TO SCHOOL! When I picked my child up the second day, as soon as I got my child in the car he started crying! (not typical behavior). After trying everything to get an answer from him on what was going on I again was getting no where. I am not the type of person that will give up when something goes bad but I wanted to know if a kid was bullying my child or what the situation was. I decided to record my child at school by putting a digital recorder in his pocket to see if he was being bullied. Turns out the kids are really nice, but the teacher is verbally humiliating some of the kids and making them feel stupid. The teaching method is DEFINITELY NOT MONTESSORI. the teacher is writing and instructing on board and children are meant to remember and recall what was taught on board over 20min ago. (keep in mind this is 3-6 year olds) When my son struggled and asked for help the teacher in a sarcastic tone asked why don't you know this? I just went over this on the board. That's when he started crying and it did not end for over an hour! He would ask her for help several time but no help was offered by teacher. He would say, "Ms. Thomas." and she would reply "Ms. Thomas has left the building" . She even humiliated a little girl from the class in front of the other kids because she had an accident in her pants before they were to go to the playground..... I can go on and on with the examples from my recording. But after listening to it I just wanted to cry because my son trusted me and I put him in that environment. He is now in a different preschool but still talks about how that teacher treated him. I want school to be a positive experience for my kids so they will have a fulfilling learning experience later. The kids are definitely not getting this with the Montessori program at Josephine Sunset Home. read more

My dad spent 4 months there this past summer (end of June to beginning of October 2015) and the staff was excellent. They attended to every need he had and was fantastic at keeping the family appraised of what was going on. Would definitely recommend this facility! read more
