St. Francis is much cheaper than a private, long-term care facility and about the same price as an assisted living facility. The bonus is that because it is small, the staff know their residents much better and are all very kind. When my mother in law was living here, Carol Ann and Gerard (owners) went out of their way to assist her in emergency situations, quite a number of times. I work in the health care field so I know that other facilities simply would not have provided the individualized care that she received.

She was probably not a good fit for Chandler Square anymore and the management decided it was time for her to leave. The reason for the one-star rating is the way she was told to leave. Yes, "told." It was ugly. Rather than being kind to a 93 year old, she was basically told to get out ASAP in a very uncaring manner. Any good that came with my mom's stay was tossed out the window by a thoughtless manager who just wanted her out. My mom is not an emotional person. This experience caused her great anxiety. And the crying and hand-wringing was painful to see. It was totally unnecessary. I occasionally thought I might one day be a resident of Chandler Square. Not! After this experience I can tell you this: I will never live in Chandler Square and I will never recommend it to anyone. My recommendations will be just the opposite. The management just does not understand how to deal with people. They are cold.

There are many common amenities, including a semi-private golf course, clubhouse, tennis courts, pool, wood shop, and craft room with kiln. The community is gated and security needs to be notified of guest arrivals and departures. Only 2 people and one dog/cat are allowed per home, but guests may stay for up to 30 days. Many homes have lovely views of Salt Spring Island, or of the golf course. Unfortunately, the private docks and marina were damaged in a storm and have been removed. There is a boat and RV storage yard and boats can be launched nearby at the Cowichan Bay Marina. There are over 40 clubs and groups to join, including Wine Club, Hiking Club, Bridge Club, and Bible Babes. It is a very WASPy community with very few members of ethnic minorities. Potential buyers should be aware that they will need to adhere to strict community standards for landscaping, maintenance, and quiet hours, or face being reported to the strata council. Also, permission must be obtained before making major changes to private properties (e.g. installing gates or jacuzzis. All things said, if you're content to live by the rules, it's a very nice place to retire.

From the nurses to the restaurant staff, to the management and the front desk, I always felt that everyone here put the well-being of the residents first. Whether it was at an afternoon happy hour, a birthday celebration, or an everyday meal, it was clear to me that the residents here were active participants in a vibrant and supportive community. If I were to entrust the well-being of a family member to a senior living community, I would genuinely choose this one without hesitation. My experience here left a positive lasting impression on me that I will carry throughout my career, and I'm grateful to have played a small role in such an incredible community.

While they may think it is okay to interfere in peoples lives, I do not take kindly to defamation and character assassination from people whom I have never laid eyes on. I have had to retain legal counsel in order to correct their misinformation and interference in my life and my family's life. Absolutely unacceptable. Take heed and stay the heck away! But I can say that my mother moved in early 2022 and just passed away and we never had a negative experience of any kind. The surroundings and building are well maintaind and have a "hotel" type feel. The staff is professional, competent and pleasant. My mother enjoyed unterfacing with them - "they're always smiling". The food is very good. It was not my mother's inclination but there are plenty of group activites, including a shuttle for tours and shopping. The final week of my mothers life there was closely monitored by the Regency staff with the nurses making the determination on when to bring in Hospice (and this is a really great group to - very professional and attentive). I usually don't give 5 stars because that implies perfection but I needed to counter the low ratings giving the 2.3 rating.
