My son bought an expensive suit from this place for his wedding. They altered the pants and he picked up the suit covered in a garment bag thinking it was ready to wear. When he opened the bag shortly before the wedding the slacks had been thrown over a hanger and were full of wrinkles plus the entire suit was covered in lint. Totally unacceptable. I went in to the store explaining that I was trying to find something that didn't need to be tailored. The owner told me it was no problem they can do it same day. I found a shirt I liked and then the owner changed his mind and said it wasn't worth it for him to do the item for me because he could have another customer come in and spend more money buying two suits when I'm only buying a shirt so it just wasn't worth it. Do yourself a favor and go to Penners instead. Whether you're buying a pair of socks or a bespoke suit, they know how to treat customers AND tailoring is included with the price of every garment. I have spent thousands of dollars at Josephs but will never spend another penny again. To tell me, "it's not worth it" tells me I am not worth it. Terrible customer service, rushed out and treated like dirt. Do not shop here. read more

Joseph's was founded in 1948 and still owned by the same family, so with 70 under their belt (pardon the pun) I hoped that nothing much (other than location) had changed from the "good old days." My grandfather and father shopped there and were always more than pleased. There have been changes, which are to be expected--styles, fabrics, etc. But what has not changed is the quality of the clothes and the exemplary customer service. I was looking for a sport coat and pants. I'm notoriously difficult to fit; many a sales clerk has thrown up his/her hands in frustration. In today's world of rush, rush, rush, Joseph's marches to a different drummer. They will take whatever time is necessary to assure their customers clothes fit perfectly. I was more than pleased to have Ralph, the store manager, look after my needs. I must have tried on close to ten coats before he was satisfied. But then he looked at the sleeves; he wanted them shortened about a quarter inch and marked them. Most stores would view this as an unnecessary alteration but at Joseph's, it has to be just so. Next pants--not so many to try on but again, the attention to detail was evident. More measurements, more marking, the length was perfect and I was ready to be on my way. I don't know about you but I'm tired of shopping in stores where the quality has much to be desired, the sales people seem perturbed at having to wait on me and they couldn't care less if I'm satisfied. Gentlemen (sorry, ladies, they carry only men's clothing), if you feel as I do, please give Joseph's a try. Yes, you'll pay more but the excellent quality and service are very much worth it. read more

They have a great selection, but their customer service was less than what I had expected. I told the salesman that I was getting pricing and options for a tuxedo he shows me some books and then got offended when I told him that I wanted to wait to order as I was looking at other options. When I inquired if he would hold the order for me he said that he would not sell it to me at all unless I ordered it that day paid in full. This is very sad because I rather liked the store and their selection. I probably will not shop there at all. read more

I am a large guy, (6'9) and needed a big and tall suit(56 extra long) for a job interview. Joseph's had a couple different ones i was able to try on and even a tailor on staff that was able to do alterations that day. Steve, the owner, helped me find my suit and was able to get me out the door in no time. I would definitely recommend this shop for any needs you may have when it comes to dressing sharply! I've been shopping AND buying at Joseph's for several years. Unlike most of the "brick & Mortar" stores, Joseph's tailors to Men only and carries a great variety of name brand and top quality clothing. For me personally, both Steve and Robert have been very professional and their level of service has always met my expectations. I have bought a wide array of clothing including underwear and everything up to a tailored suit. You can also purchase your favorite pair of AE shoes and Talbot ties before you leave. All alterations for slacks and Jackets have been perfect and delivered when promised or ahead of time If you are looking for cheaper and cookie cutter products, go to Macy's, Dillard's or National Menswear. We needed a size 19 neck for the wedding.......and this was recommended to us.....the only place to go. Lovely experience....and we ended up spending over $400.....He tied the tie for us, pressed the shirt, adjusted the tie holder, , and matched suspenders.........top notch. It was like a perfect way to be treated. I'd give it a 5 star, but the suspenders would not hold and kept popping off on one side.....we'll send them back and I'm sure they'll fix it.. read more

Today (07/03/16) a friend & I (both African Americans) walk into the store @ about 07:35pm. A bearded gentleman comes up to us & asks if we need any help. We state we're looking around for any items of interest. He states they would soon be closing. Within a minute he then states they were actually closing & states they were open tomorrow till 8pm. He tells his counterpart to go ahead & close the gate as we walk out. We step out of the door at 07:40pm. On the door, it clearly states they close at 08:00pm. I am very disappointed with Josephs's alterations department. I recently lost some weight and needed to have my suit altered to look presentable for an interview, so I took my suit in, got measured, and was told that they would call me in when my suit is ready for pick up. I was happy since I initially felt that my suit was unalterable, and I would eventually have to buy a new one. When the day came to pick up my suit, instead of having me try on the suit the service representative approached the check out area, so it was odd that I had to ask him if I could try on my suit. I was not happy with the alteration, and was given a number of excuses: "we're only human", "the suit was two sizes too big", and that, "its common to have your suit altered a second time", and it would cost me an additional $35 to get the jacket altered This is all understandable, but that's not what I was told when I came in the first time. Furthermore, one of the hems along the pocket was undone, and I told the service representative that this was unacceptable, since I have an interview on Tuesday. He eventually told me, in an unprofessional demeanor that he would have the suit altered for free, and I replied, being honest and not haughty, "It's not like I'm robbing you I expected a good job the first time", he asked for my suit, and casually told me that if I ever need my suit altered next time I should take it somewhere else. I was totally flabbergasted, and shaken, and told him to, "give me my suit so I can get the f*** out of here". Result: my suit is too big to be saved, and I should have saved my money to buy a new one, but this gentleman's incentives are perverse, (he's certainly on commission) so he was not honest with me from the beginning--If the suit is too big to be altered, then it's too big. He said of the alterations technique he was going to use, "we generally don't like doing this, but we would have to cut along the collar to bring it in", sounds like surgery to me...Oh well. read more

I have been buying suits, ties, shoes and tuxedos from Josephs for over 25 years. My son now gets his dress clothes there as well. The owners and employees have always been helpful, knowledgeable and friendly. I wouldn't consider shopping anywhere else. First of all, my rating is based on the service I received only. I think Josephs has great selection, and they were the only store in San Antonio (outside of Nordstrom in La Cantera) that had the shoes I was after. However, the service I received was insulting. I was thinking over a final purchase decision, and asked the salesman about the store return policy. He bluntly asked me if I was planning to wear them and return them. He basically assumed I was a deadbeat customer. Even though the drive will take an extra hour out of my day, I'm headed to Nordstrom to get the same pair of shoes. When I called in to ask if they had them, they didn't treat me like a criminal when I asked about the return policy. read more

I have given Joseph's 1 star only after struggling internally about writing a post at all. My initial thoughts were to simply not give this establishment any more of my business. Based on my experience, I assume their tailors are subpar at best. Fortunately for me, Nordstrom's tailors @ La Cantera are fully capable of sizing their customers for made to measure suits and also performing alterations on store bought suits. Side Note: Ask for James, at Nordtrom's, if ever interested in a Made to Measure suit. He's amazing. His attention to customer's needs is also amazing. I digress. In any event one of the two owners, Steve, provided me with enough motivation to provide the following experience to potential customers. Unsurprisingly this motivation came after Steve Rubin gave me two minutes to discuss a potential alternative to their no refund policy, he chose to instead walk away immediately, before I could open my mouth. He turned back to me and said,"I changed my mind". This didn't upset me, I actually found his response rather amusing. By the way, I didn't actually purchase the item in question. More on that in a moment. We came to an agreement that I would receive half my money back, with the other half allocated to store credit. After selecting a couple of items, Robert, the more patient brother was actually pleasant until checkout. I had actually decided to NOT write a review, but then he pulled a passive aggressive move on me, a jab taken on his brothers behalf I would presume. I asked him to give me the last four digits of the card on file (I forgot which card I used). I have 1 debit and 1 credit card, unbeknownst to him. His response, "Interesting, so you have more than one credit card.". The statement in and of itself was innocent, the way he said it-was not. I again found this amusing and THEN decided to provide a review, only after taking a day to decide if one was appropriate Short Back Story: Came into Josephs to select a suit for my wedding. An associate assisted me. I was on the fence between a made to measure suit or alterations to a store bought suit. An associate advised the purchase of a suit from the store. I put half down on the suit, with the other half to be paid upon arrival. This was assuming I liked the suit. My fiancé didn't like it, so I suggested getting a made to measure suit instead and offered to pay the restocking fee for the already ordered suit. Associate thought it would look the same, so I asked if I could pay the restocking and shipping fees and take the loss. Steve, the owner mentioned above, informed me that Joseph's doesn't issue refunds. Understood, hence the reason I offered to pay the restock and shipping fees. I asked if a full refund or some alternative was an option. The rest of the story is provided above. Maybe they were both having a bad day. Maybe business is slowing down, which is understandable given the state of the economy. Maybe I unknowingly followed behind another customer seeking a refund. In any event I can't advise potential customers of what they should or should not do, but I won't provide any of my business for the following reasons: 1) Department stores at Northstar Mall, across the street, have cheaper and comparable options for clothing 2) They have a very limited shoe selection. Johnston and Murhphy @ North star Mall, just across the street, offers greater variety. 3) Customer service is lacking. 4) One of the two owners could use anger management courses I decided to thank the associate and passive aggressive brother, for their assistance, and apologized for any inconvenience I may have caused via email. It was my first communion and I got my first ever dress suit as a seven year old here at Joseph's. The salesmen at Joseph's are extremely helpful, and never too pushy. Not to mention you can walk in as a compely non-impressive human being and leave here Ron Burgundy. The selection of clothes is very impressive and they have a great selection of boys and big & tall merchandise. Take the time to flip channels on the big screen and get a boot or shoe shine from Angel's Shoe Shine located right next to the shoe rack in the back of the store. The man works magic with leather and can turn your stained suede shoes around. While getting your new threads tailored go next door to the barbershop for a hot shave to get ready for your date with Ms. Corningstone. read more

I am really shocked there's some negative reviews here. My husband and I are the epitome of world's colliding. I'm a born & bred city-girl, he's a country boy named Bubba (true story). We have a party to go to at Christmas time & he needed to be dressed a bit better than his go-to boots/western-cut sport coat so I took him to Joseph's. Let me tell you, if they can find something to make my SUPER picky, prefers jeans, a ball-cap, & poo smeared cowboy boots happy - they can and will do whatever they can to make anyone happy. Ralph was kind, efficient, and made sure to explain to my husband why dress pants and jeans were two entirely different animals & fit wildly different. Once we'd picked the jacket and slacks - he pulled shoes, belt, shirt options, tie options, everything we needed and helped my husband pull together a look he's happy & confident in. If you take the time to discuss what you need & why you need it, they will make it happen. Family has been shopping for men's clothes there for years & will continue to do so despite living out of San Antonio now. There have been instances in the past where my dad has needed a slight alteration (shortened hem, simple things) and knowing that he doesn't live local anymore - they've had same-day turn around. It's been perfect every time. Both of the owner's (founder's sons) are awesome too. If you're looking for QUALITY with fantastic service - there's no place better in San Antonio. read more
