I had an amazing experience with Penner's when I needed a suit for my upcoming wedding. When you first walk into Penner's you immediately get the impression of a store that knows exactly what it is doing, and trying to be. There is history all over the walls, and you can see this is a beloved family run institution. That immediately made me feel good. Everyone in the store is also extremely friendly and helpful, the service is top notch. I had signed up for an appointment for a fitting, and I had a very specific suit color in mind (dark hunter green). I knew this wasn't the most common color for a suit, and I was a little nervous because I've never been through the tailoring experience before. Matt came over and walked me through everything, he helped me pick out not only the suit that is perfect for what I was looking for but he also helped me find a shirt, tie, belt and shoes. He was with me every step of the way. My suit had to be ordered and altered since it's not a common off the rack color, the team at Penner's kept in touch with me the whole time. I never had any doubt that I was in good hands, and any questions I had were answered fully. The price for everything was also extremely fair in my opinion. I fully endorse Penner's if you're looking for suits, clothes, shoes or anything else wearable. There's a big selection, and it's not just suits they also have just about anything for men's wear. Nice place and well stocked- unlike discount stores today. Won't be the absolute cheapest, but fair price for a great suit that hangs right and looks amazing! Men's clothing selection and quality is great. Prices are similar to major department store but, the prices are easily offset by the AMAZING SERVICE provided at Penners in San Antonio. I've bought various items through out the past 5 years and the service and direct attention to me by the sales consultants have always been incredible. They listen to what I would like and will take the time to find the right items. A couple of weeks ago I went in to the store and was attended to by Mr. Frankie Martinez and he too, provided me with courtesy and great service. Frankie helped me find the slacks, denim, pants, and dress shirts in the style I was wanting. He was honest enough to tell me if something did not look good or really wasn't what I called, my style. The slacks needed to have the length hemmed and the shirts needed to have the neck buttons moved. This was done at no additional cost and they were ready the same day. Thank you Frankie and Penners! BTW - my wife was able to purchase some women's slacks and a guayabera style dress which look amazing. Shopping here is so much easier than going to the large department stores where you have to try on multiple items and the hopefully find someone to help you. read more

I called Tuesday and asked about getting measured for a suit. "We have half a dozen tailors." Today is Friday. I went in and someone named Hiram asked could he help me. I'm looking for a nice suit to wear to go on the back cover of my new book, and I'd like to be measured for a proper fit. We can do that. Let's go look at the suits. We go to suits and he says put my things on a chair, take my jacket off, and he'll measure me. I said, Okay, my neck size on my shirts is 16 1/2 and 17 over 34 or 35, I wear a size 33 or 34 Levi's or Wranglers and the same in dress slacks. That's a different fit, he says. These are suits, those are jeans. Condescending. I"m 70, not 7. Yes, but those are exact sizes to translate to a suit which is usually slightly larger. (It's an easy rule of thumb some of my past tailors asked or said, If you were a 32 in jeans, this is your likely fit in suit pants. But I don't argue.) I am ready to be measured and he asks while doing it, where is your waist. I said, My belly button is right here, pointing to it, which is a typical reference point for a tailor. He says, You 36 in the waist. I said, Right now I am. I'm at my largest size and have been dieting for a month to lose weight, so I'll need to do my waist again in a month for the actual alterations. Twice I ask, Are we going to do my shoulders now? or my arm length? Or we can do my neck? He says how much do you wanna spend? I should know? I have no idea the cost of their suits and he's not taking time to inform me, either. I said, I don't know. Because I say $2000, then what? $1500 then what? I learned long ago prices are often way off and you can find some $700 suits nicer than a $2000 suit. I was model. I said, I'm on a budget, so I got book revenues soon, some other things and my regular budget. I didn't say what it was. None of his business. He doesn't tell me the prices, but just walks off to the suits and grabs the cheapest suit on the rack. The $495 suit. And he's only measured my belly. That's it. Then to add insult to injury, the only one cheaper is the mail order suit they have. I already told him it's for my book cover, you know, the photo of me, on an actual book. He thinks I want the cheapest suit he's got? So I ask again, I'd like to be measured so I have the best fit. And he says I have to stand up to do the legs. Yeah, okay, but I'm in a wheelchair and can't stand up. All my life since crippled they measure me sitting down. It's not rocket science. From the crotch to the underside of the knee, from there to the cuffs by the ankles. So I got a guy, this Hiram, who doesn't know how to fit someone who sits down all the time. If he fits me standing up, you know what happens, right? What do pants do when a gentleman sits down? The cuffs by the ankles raise up a few inches, right? When he stands up, they go back down, right? On everybody, everybody that walks. I don't know why they don't get it, but this happened too many times, and I'm stuck with a brand new pair of suit pants that everywhere I go I am Mr. Highwater. If I told you how many times I had to go back to have the seam let out, it's no laughing matter. So he shows me a $695 suit. Not wasting time with me on the $1000 suits. it's not good. I show him a linen coat I like. He says, like I don't know, that's for summer. Duh, books don't know what time of year it is. I hope you guys get it. So I say, Yes, linen, white, that's a summer set. I was a clothes model whenI could walk. It sure is nice. But that's a Summer suit, he repeats twice more. I start to wonder, Does this guy really think he needs to repeat himself with me on everything? I'm tempted to cuss him out in French and start speaking to him in Spanish for the rest of the night and see if he can keep up. Obviously he has a low opinion of me. No? He insists I have to try the pants on, the $695 suit pants. I'm not there to strip down. I wanna set their finer suits and be properly measured. 1, 2. Well, I say I'll come back with some slacks that fit well, so he can measure those. Great idea, he says. I turn to leave, to get my jacket back on and go. I see nicer suits, and some sport coats. He's 30 feet away. I'm glad I'm done with him. I look at the yellowing linen coat. He just can stop himself from telling me the fourth time, That's a SUMmer coat. I hold my tongue. I make hardly a comment, just a nod. I turn left, away from him, and go grab some arms of pretty coats that maybe appeals at first sight. On the lower rack, at my level. A couple of leather ones and then more of the sports coats. As soon as I touch the sports coats, not even a second goes by that he can't stop himself from telling me, Those are sports coats. I hold my tongue. I grab the arm of another one. Again, "Those are sports coats." After five times hearing those are sports coats, I said, What is it that makes you think I don't know these are sports coats? he gives an obtuse answer that he's just making talk. Took our son in to find an outfit for a wedding in Cancun. From the moment we walked in the service was incredible. From a courteous and friendly welcome to professional advice on the appropriate clothing for the tropical type wedding in Cancun. Our son was fitted with an awesome white guayabera shirt and a pair of linen slacks that made the perfect outfit. The slacks needed a slight alteration to the hem and that was done, in the store, in about 15 minutes. I found a guayabera for myself and my wife got a couple of outfits she really liked. The staff was amazing and the selection is great. Prices are comparable to major department stores but, the service makes it all worth-while. I started by calling and asking about parking as well as tailoring services and I was transferred to Mitchell Penner who was very friendly over the phone. I mentioned that I have trouble getting a good fit, due to my build, and his response was "This store is meant for guys like us, not everyone is a 6'2" slim." Immediately, I was put at ease and extremely excited to visit the store which was over an hour away. Not only did the selection and choice of clothing they choose to stock impress me, but the service I received was truly exceptional. What an awesome store and a wonderful experience after all these years. I haven't been to Pinner's since the early 1990's with my dad who was a client of Penner's. My dad loved this store. He would come home with a new pair of Stacy Adams shoes and a new suit three pieced suit. He would even buy a new hat with a bright beauty feather on it. Today I came in to purchase a Fiesta Medal 100 years in San Antonio. They even had t-shirts. I would have loved a nice tank top to wear during the fiesta 2017. Maybe they will have those in stock next year. The staff was friendly and welcome from the time we entered Penner's until the time we left. I was impressed with the fact that they carry women's clothes and some awesome western boots. I think I'm going to visit them the next time I want a new pair and a matching neckless. Penner's wowed my nephew so when he's older and ready for a real suit I know where I'm taking him. Memories of the past brought in a new client for the future. I stopped in based off the window displays of Guayabera-style shirts and basically the fact it's been there since 1916!! The outside is old and shows it's resilience (withstood floods and fires), but when you enter, you realize they have only quality items and dedicated service to offer. Upon entering, Alford welcomed us and informed us of their selection in a friendly manner. Soon after, he simply let us look around and shop on our own, until we needed assistance. Great service! I purchased a Cubavera / Guayabera style shirt to wear on the final night of La Fiesta. They have 100% cotton shirts, Polyester/Cotton mix, Pima Cotton, and a couple other fabrics to allow comfort in various temps. Wow!! Just returned back to Seattle from a 3 day vacation first time ever visit to San Antonio. I have always wanted a pair of cowboy boots and thought....well..here I am in Texas....should be the best place. A person I was speaking with mentioned a store called Penner's. Later that day (Super Bowl Sunday) I was walking from my hotel by the Riverwalk to the market on Commerce and happened to walk by Penner's. Of all chances...right? I tried the door...and it was locked. Darn it!! Oh well I thought. So, I continued my walk and was about a half block away and I heard somebody yell behind me..."Can I help you?" I had no clue who this person was. I said I was looking for cowboy boots and he said...."C'Mon in". So, me and my brother walked back into the store with this person. Long story short...it was Mark Penner!! Yes, I bought some cowboy boots..and a western shirt. I worked for Nordstrom here in Seattle for 15 years. Never would I have ever thought that I would run into another clothing business that could provide the type of customer service that is instilled in ones blood like Nordstrom. This man is incredible. Everything about him. The next day I walked by again because my daughter was so impressed with my story that she wanted me to check on the ladies cowboy boots. It was now Monday. Fully staffed, people running around. I saw Mark...said hi and was then assisted by another employee who was just like Mark. Wow...who was this guy....of course...his son Matt. Unbelievable. My father and I were visiting SA for a music festival in march. I called Penner's ahead for some information and was told to call back when I get into SA. Once in SA, I called the store. The store sent a driver to pick us up from our hotel! We had a fabulous time trying on several selections and felt like we were picking out items from a friends closet. What? How can I possibly be the first to review this first-class men's store? It's been in San Antonio for friggin' years! Davy Crockett -- prior to his coonskin cap wearing days -- was known to sport a nice guayabera from Penner's, and General Santa Anna purchased fine shoes and hankies for "special evenings" with the other military gents. OK, maybe that's not entirely accurate, but I can assure you this place has been around for some time...1916, to be exact. Sam Penner, the original owner's son, who remained active at the store until the day of his death at 92 in June of 2002, had a dream was to become the largest distributor of "authentic" guayaberas in the United States. From the look of that store, he succeeded. Sam's grandson, Matt now runs the place and does brisk business selling guayaberas over the Internet. While in San Antone, I went it to get a nice traditional 4-pocket guayabera, but Penner's sells all sorts of men's shirts including Hawaiian shirts, Cuban shirts and Mexican wedding shirts. You're probably asking, "Hey, just where did the guayabera come from?" Good question, my inquisitive amigo. Sit, and I will "esplain" to you The Legend of the Guayabera. The saying is that the guayabera shirt originated in Cuba but Mexico also claims the same. The Cuban legend has it that a farmer wanted to create a functional shirt to carry all of his necessities. His wife made the shirt, which was quickly adopted by others. Another version is that a farmer along the Yayabo River who had the shirt designed to carry guava (gauyaba) fruit. He wanted plentiful pockets in which to carry his bounty. Traditionally, the shirt has four pockets, straight-bottoms with two panels of four to 10 rows of tucking (pleats) and, especially, embroidery. This shirt was designed to be loose and cool for the hot, humid days and nights in Cuba. As time evolved, more renditions of the shirt were made; some with 1, 2 or no pockets. Some have embroidery and some don't. This shirt has stood the test of time and is still worn as a cultural status among men. Cool cats from such countries as Africa, Japan, England, Australia, Ireland and Canada sport this shirt. If you plan to stop in and buy yourself a nice guayabera, ask for Zeke; he was extremely helpful in showing us the different designs, colors, materials (I like linen) and prices. Expect to pay from $40-90 for a good shirt. Alterations are free, for up to a year from the date of purchase, just in case I put on (or lose...yeah, right) a few pounds. Parking is free and that helps in that busy part of town. Zeke gave us free drink/dessert tickets at La Margarita restaurant down and street at El Mercado, and we walked up and had a margarita after buying a very cool (IMHO) blue, one-pocket shirt. I highly recommend this store for fine men's clothing and especially their selection of guayaberas! read more

There are places where business is done, there are businesses, and then every once in a while we get to experience the first two with dash of tradition or heritage. Very few times do we get the opportunity to experience all of these at the same time, much less with different people within the company/business. That is what I can sum up Penners and their staff, and the following is why I will do as much business with Penners from here on out. I'm a little ashamed to admit but I found myself in the unfortunate situation of needing a very last minute alteration on a dark suit for an occasion that called for it...the funeral of someone very close to me in my family. I contacted Penners on Friday around noon and let them know my situation, and that I was willing to pay anything to have it rushed for a pickup that next day asap, like first thing in the morning, since the funeral was in Corpus, a two hour drive away. Frankie gave me the look... but he said I'll try my best to have it ready. Not only did he treat me with the highest level of respect and dignity, but not knowing it at the time, he waved the rush fee, which was he last thing I was expecting. In fact I had told him I was willing to pay hat and extra if they could make it happen. This part may seem insignificant, but at the time I was on the negative/red side of a very unexpected vet bill that I incurred the same day I received the unfortunate news of the loss in my family. I admit, I wasn't expecting him to have it ready and had very little hope I'd be wearing it the next day. The events of the past week had my expectations shot but positivity and hope, although in short supply and forced were all I had. Saturday morning arrives and I'm 2.5 hours from the time I have to be in corpus in the parking lot behind the cathedral when I decide to give Penners a call preparing to give my appreciation and reason for not being able to pick up a rush job, I get Mr. Matt Penner to answer. After explaining the situation he tells me to give Frankie a call/text but that he would be in at 8:45 am, 45 minutes past my departure time from San Antonio, and still about 35-40 minutes from then. He did however let me know he would look for it.. (this is where it gets good.) I was leaving the parking lot and had given up all hope of it being ready that and arriving late as a pall bearer for your grandmothers service is never a good look, neither is not having your suits tailored but I know I know. When I get a call from Mr. Penner, he let me know the suit was ready and that he couldn't find it because it was on the rack hat was ready for pickup, "as if they knew you'd be here to get it" were his words. He then says to come to the back of the store where I will find him with my suit. Sure enough, not only was he waiting on the street for me but he insisted I stay in the vehicle, knowing I was in a time crunch, opened my door and put my suit in my vehicle and told me to be careful on my drive down to corpus. This is why Penners has been in business for 102 years. This is exactly why, they could have not been able to get the alterations completed and I would still be leaving a review like this. In a better world, locally-owned shops offering excellent customized service would be as common as fast food restaurants. Alas, Penner's is one of a kind, but it's worth the trip downtown for men's clothes. I've visited a couple of times, and one thing that stands out is that Penner's will tailor anything they sell--for free! Even the dress shirts and guayaberas can be changed to suit your body type. It may not be the cheapest place in town, but if you're going to spend money on clothes, you may as well make sure you look good in them. My husband originally went in to get an estimate for tailoring a suit he was going to order online for our wedding. We met Zeke (one of the managers that's been there for years) who gave us the information on the tailoring prices and offered to show some suits in the store. I encouraged my husband to take a look since I'm not quite comfortable purchasing something important online and I'm so happy he did. He found a wonderful, charcoal gray fitted suit which was $200 cheaper than the online store! It is still a bit on the pricey side but we couldn't be happier with the product and the experience. Ever suit comes with free tailoring which was done beautifully. When we went to pick it up we ended up getting a dress shirt, tie, and shoes. My husband is so excited to wear his suit for our wedding and plans on getting another one soon. The price is worth the money! With some care it can last him a good couple of years.
