The zen house is an absolute must for anyone looking to spend time with their significant other or just rebound in one of the most amazing nature habitats in the world. The house is equipped with everything for pampering and socializing. We have no complaints and in fact they exceeded expectations with lights on and nice music for our arrival. The game room is a lot of fun. Based on one review I brought extra ping pong balls and left them. They were unnecessary. The hammock and fire pit are amazing. We brought extra wood just in case but they do have extra for a fee. I suggest entering Joshua park from the north entrance station. And planning on at least 8 hours to hit the big sites. Amazing and are putting this on our return trips list for the future. read more

When you're looking to escapee a concrete jungle and get in touch with nature, a hotel or motel just didn't seem like the appropriate option. After some extensive searching on the internet for homes that embraced character, we found the Godwin Ranch through Joshua Desert Retreats - what a magical find. Originally we had intended our trip focus around a rock-climbing course, but I never made it to class, we were having too much fun having outdoor dinner/pool parties, hiking and bouldering on our own time. The character of this place perfectly encompasses a cowboy getaway. From the bull's skull mounted between two wagon wheels, to the outdoor arm chairs to melt into as you gaze the landscape, adjacent a perfect breakfast table, a full gadget kitchen, a cozy little pool to escape the heat and my favorite, the back patio - with horse shoe, golf clubs, swinging outdoor bed, swings, and fire place to indulge in smores while remembering what the stars look like. We can't wait to return to the Godwin Ranch for an encore. read more

Our family of 5 stayed in Wikiup, one of these retreats and let's just say I cannot wait to go back! The 5 acres fully enclosed property (by a gate) is just what the Dr. ordered. They thought of everything when creating this vacation rental. Lounge chairs perfectly placed for the gorgeous sunrise, a hammock under the stars and exactly placed near a fire pit, close enough for warmth and far enough for safety. Spaces for prayer and tribal ceremonies. Barbecue with the tongs and spatula waiting to use. The home is decorated with Native American artifacts and design. In the home there is everything a modern home would have. Dishwasher, washing machine, coffee maker, toaster oven, microwave, refrigerator, bowls, cups, plates, mugs and serving dishes... perfect to host a special celebration or holiday, just stop for groceries on the way! We all slept comfortably in either a king, queen or twin bed. The couches are comfortable and the home is fully equipped with games for everyone to enjoy. Outside in the backyard has a Jacuzzi and pool! It was too cold for me to enjoy but the kids didn't mind the cold water... And the hike!!! Choose any direction and go! My kids kept saying "I am the first person to ever step here", and it truly felt like that was correct. I can't wait to come back. Thank you for creating this sacred space for our family to enjoy. Hammock and Horshoes at Wikiup: I spent a weekend 2-weeks back in a hammock with nothing but desert and the sky. I only rose for a competitive game of horseshoes, followed by a soothing dip in the warm jacuzzi. Inside the Wikiup house, surrounded by Indian themed portraits, artifacts and sculptures, there is a full kitchen with dining choices inside and on the expansive surrounding patio. There are two charmingly decorated bedrooms, 2-baths, with sofas, loungers and couches in charmingly arranged groups, while the patio has a fire-pit, bar-b-que set up and yet more seating and lounging spots. Simply a wonderful, restful place surrounded by thoughtful landscaping making it into an oasis rarely to be found. read more

We have been using this company for a number of years, staying at various properties of theirs. We kept returning because we always had a fantastic stay. The properties are unique, beautifully decorated and they put in such great attention to detail. We stayed at: Jackalope, Zen-Go, Adobe and Godwin Ranch, all of which were wonderful. And then we booked Witt's End for my birthday weekend. A group of 10 adults, plus four small children, drove up in early September when the heat was bordering on unbearable. When we arrived, the pool and hot tub were not just broken but had been out of order for months as the water was completely full of algae (gross!). There hadn't been a single word of warning that these were out of order, which considering the time of year, was just unacceptable. After numerous phone calls and messages, all of which were ignored, a pool guy was eventually hired to come and sort out the pool the following day. But after realizing how bad the situation was, he just left. That wasn't all that was wrong here: the house hadn't been cleaned properly: the bed sheets were stained and we found items including a dirty pair of men's underpants and a used bandaid in the beds. The manager Nick was so incredibly unresponsive and blasé about the whole thing, it was just infuriating. We had booked three nights but checked out early, going to stay in a hotel in Palm Springs instead. We eventually received a full refund and a promise that any of our guests would be able to have a complementary stay in the future. After a series of emails inquiring about this offer and no response, I can only assume this promise was made to deter us from leaving a nasty review. It's a shame but I will never use this company again, nor would I recommend it to anyone. read more

I have had to work with this 3rd party company through VRBO. They have been so unprofessional and frustrating to deal with. Nick has not returned any of my e-mails, & its been a month since my stay & I have not received my deposit let alone any reps to my request. They take your money and then totally disregard you as a customer with your valid concerns. Consumers beware. What was supposed to be a fun get away trip has now turned into a headache because of this company. read more

First of all, I must say that our space in 29 Palms was very cool and well decorated and we had an amazing time. If you can tolerate their corporate bullshit of red tape, excessively long contracts, and constant "my apologies" without actually solving any of the problems, then it might be a great option for getting out into the desert. For me, however, there are so many reputable websites for finding and booking lodging, that I will look elsewhere before using their services again. Their rental agreement, for example, required us to declare, under penalty of perjury, the number of their campfire logs we burned. Here's what needs to be improved: 1. The Hot Tub Was Broken and there was absolutely no plan to repair it. This was frustrating, because it was a feature that we specifically paid extra for (that's right: you pay extra to use the hot tub). Worse yet, these guys had no plan in place for getting it repaired. Instead of solving the problem on our behalf, they gave us a series of local phone numbers and told us to get in touch with "their guy" to take care of it ourselves. When we finally got a hold of him, "their guy" wasn't even in town. 2. They Took Almost a Month to Refund the Deposit and Passed the Pay Pal Fees Onto US. I reached out to Joshua Desert Retreats a couple weeks after the trip because I hadn't received the security deposit. They said there was a problem with their system and it would be sent out imminently. Problems happen, I get it. But good customer service means pre-emptive communication, and I wish they would have bothered to give me a call and explain the situation in advance. From there, it took several more weeks of back and forth and badgering and "sorry, we thought this was going to be solved by now" before finally releasing the check. A few weeks before our trip, I paid the $250 deposit through Paypal. but the refund came back at $228. The reason for this deduction is that they happily pass along PayPal's service fees onto their customers. So I basically had to pay Paypal $20 for the right not to trash their cabin. Did going through these guys ruin the vacation? No. You can still have a great time dining with friends at a sub-par restaurant. I just wish that they made the entire experience from first contact to the receipt of the security deposit much more like vacation and much less like a day at the DMV. read more

I stayed at one of the Joshua Desert Retreats properties many years ago (so many, in fact, that Yelp wasn't even A Thing yet....). I remembered it being a really fantastic guest house with lots of privacy and amenities, and got to thinking it would be nice to visit again. After perusing the JDR website my husband and I settled on Jackalope for a week long stay in April. The booking process was easy and John was incredibly accommodating, even extending the return guest discount to us (despite not having any Yelp record of my long-ago visit). About a week before our scheduled stay, I got a call from John saying that Jackalope was being occupied by someone who wanted to extend their stay into the time we had booked it. He offered us an upgrade to Witt's End-- obviously a very extravagant property for just two people! It turned out to be a truly spectacular week in the desert, and we made pretty good use of the three houses and two hot tubs. In fact, we preferred the bedroom in one house and the bathroom in the other, so we really got our money's worth. As other reviewers have mentioned, the attention to detail is incredible. Walking across the property, we came across art installations (including a random 7-foot carving of a bear), games (horseshoes, bocce, ping pong, golf) and FLOWERS. Oh my. So many flowers! I mean, Joshua Tree National Park was stunning, and we spent a couple of days there, but the flowers at Witt's End kinda blew the ones in the park right out of the water. So to speak. We spent a lot of time scoping out flora and fauna, including TONS of albino looking lizards and really fast moving bunnies. The houses at Witt's End are incredibly well-stocked, so if you're headed there, it's probably best that you do an inventory of what's in the pantry *before* doing a shopping trip. There are lots basics (oils and spices), as well as random condiments. Additionally, you're covered for blended drinks and toaster needs- there are plenty of modern appliances available. We're a little weird, so we brought a juicer and cuisinart (hey, we were there for a week!), but those were about the only appliances we *didn't* find when we got there. Finally, I just want to say a few words about the sky. The desert sky is really something. If you haven't gone into the desert and stared at the sky, I suggest you do, because there is just so much of it. And I really paid attention this time, because we were there for the lunar eclipse and it was quite seriously one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. Outdoor fireplace + hot tub + lunar eclipse = the total package. read more

This was the second time we rented a property with some friends out in the desert this year with Nick and we couldn't have been happier. The house itself, the Wiki Up, and before that Rancho Mesa, both felt like home to everyone in the group. They were decorated with a lot of care, had all the amenities we could have wished for and were located on beautiful properties, perfect for hikes and to really relax. We spent magical moments in both places, creating wonderful memories. Actually we loved the second house so much so that we stayed for longer than originally planned! Mainly because our car broke down, but nonetheless, Nick arranged immediately for us to be able to stay longer and was extremely understanding. Everything went very smoothly and we will definitely rent properties with Nick in the future. More than a couple rotations around the sun ago, we spent a magical weekend at the Adobe property. Stars and the remnants of billions year old galaxies shone through the night sky and no better a seat had, than from the comfort of the spa. The location was central to the JP entrance and all the "night-life" downtown. I wish I could recall the delicious breakfast joint located in a hotel, just adjacent to a tropical lagoon. Ask around.....I'm sure the locals will direct you in the right direction. Of our most cherished of memories, were the swine-inspired bbq and the "driving-range" just off the patio. I think she found way too much enjoyment in my fetching of golf balls all over the property (even in cactus ;). Looking forward to our next adventure in Joshua Tree. Cheers. read more

Witt's End is one of the most beautiful and coolest properties that I have ever stayed at in the desert! So great in fact that if it were an option, I'd want to buy it! Amazing! I've rented both the Wikiup and Witt's End from Joshua Desert Retreats for some friend gatherings. Nick and Irene we super communicative and make booking a breeze. We rented Witt's End a few weeks ago and unfortunately the previous guest had actually damaged the pool so bad it had to be removed. It was my first trip to Joshua Tree and Greg and his associates at Joshua Desert Rentals made it a great experience. We didn't have the best of luck finding a place that accommodated our group of six and we were beginning to feel like we might have to cancel. We luckily found Zen-Go in the darkest hour. Thanks to JDR, we were able to have an awesome weekend with friends roasting marshmallows by the fire pit and battling it out over the ping pong table. Also, the kitchen has everything you need to cook up a feast and the pool was a perfect retreat to cool off and enjoy the sunset. What a delightful time we had at your Joshua Tree Resort...we stayed at the Wits End for my birthday celebration with 8 of my friends...my friends are accustomed to 5 star resorts (Vegas style), so it was a stretch to convince them to come to the desert...but we are ALL so thrilled we did! From the drive to the property, to the moment we first stepped into the house, we immediately felt a calmness come over us...The décor of each of your properties is quirky and fun and very well appointed! Each of us had our own unique experience, but one by one, we all fell in love with the peace and serenity of the desert! My boyfriend and I went out to Joshua Tree this past October to film a project at High Desert Test Sites and we just had the best time staying at "Joshua Desert Retreats." Here are some highlights from our stay (to name a few!): 1. So spacious, with the 3 bedrooms, couches and cots you could sleep at least ten people very comfortably 2. Cushy couches in the den to relax on after a long day in the sun 3. Hot tub - perfect way to enjoy the countless stars on a cool night 4. One mile or so from "The Palms", Wonder Valley's very own saloon 5. Kitchen was pretty well equipped for a vacation rental 6. Air conditioning came in handy! 7. Very thoughtful decor, the house boasted danish modern furniture and enjoyable paintings We had such a lovely time and truly felt at home, I would definitely recommend it to my friends and we would go back in a heartbeat! read more

We had an absolutely amazing time at Zen-Go this past weekend. It was truly a relaxing, inspiring, and eye opening location. We couldn't have asked for a more perfect place to hold a spiritual/academic retreat. The photos don't do this place justice, there is so much attention to detail all around the house. Inside and out. My group and I enjoyed cooking many meals together, with plenty of space to eat and spread out which was made possible by the well kept kitchen with plenty of dishes and silverware. Additionally, we were lucky enough to have our rental time coincide with the Geminid Meteor Shower and were in the perfect environment for viewing over 40 shooting stars! He is the man behind Joshua Desert Retreats and had the vision of creating a 'non-city' experience in the beautiful Mojave Desert. Our family celebrated Thanksgiving at two of the properties. The amenities are as advertised, and it is great fun being wayyy out in the desert. However, it is obvious that the properties are suffering from neglect. The kitchen plumbing at Rancho Mesa was leaking like crazy, which meant there was constant mopping going on during every mealtime. At Desert Palms, the hot tub water looked tan and cloudy (ewww.), and the hot tub refused to heat up above lukewarm. This was a drag, as we were hoping to enjoy the hot tub. The toaster was busted. We found out on day 3 that the dishwasher was not working; this was a drag, as the contract stipulates the tenants are to leave all of the dishes clean. So, we get to hand wash the dirty dishes instead of using the dishwasher. Our post-stay comments and complaints were never addressed by management. We were hoping to get a partial refund for our troubles and disappointments, but no go. We never got a response from anyone. So, go on out to Joshua Desert Retreats if you love the desert, but be prepared for surprises. read more

Their explanation is that they no longer work with HomeAway, which doesn't make sense given the confirmation letter we received came straight from thier resort. Even though the unit was still available, they would not honor the price confirmed on our reservation and wanted to charge us double the agreed price! My friends and I stayed at the Zen-Go property and had a fabulous time. It's a super remote, awesome desert property and a great getaway from city life. Close to Joshua Tree State Park. My husband and I just got back from celebrating our 2 year wedding anniversary in Joshua Tree. We chose to stay in the Jackalope property. We arrived late on a Friday night and found the house to be inviting, clean, and full of things to do, or not do, it's your choice...it's the desert! We had plans of hiking and exploring but found the property to be so perfect, we only left to get food to cook on the grill (all necessary grilling tools are provided). The house had speakers in every room as well as outside. All I did was plug my iPad in to the aux plug and music flowed everywhere we walked. I laid in the hammock. Soaked in the private hot tub. Enjoyed shooting stars and a night time fire in the backyard. I lived outside. The house was perfect but the outside was even better. The whole way back to LA all we did was discuss when our next trip was going to be. Go, go, go...you won't regret it! read more

We used Witt's End and the Oasis as the base camp for our Joshua Tree National Park wedding recently, and we couldn't have been happier with the experience. Both properties are gorgeous, well-located, and clearly thoroughly thought out in terms of amenities and extras. It's clear that a lot of time and effort went in to making sure guests would be comfortable and have plenty of options for passing the time. Furthermore, working with everyone involved on the JDR side was smooth and pleasant. My boyfriend and I rented the Adobe house near Joshua Tree National Park for 3 days & nights. This place is a hidden gem. A super charming, cozy little house - meant for a romantic getaway for two. We adore the outside jacuzzi & pool - very well-maintained - and there's little nook with a fireplace for cold evenings. Full kitchen for cooking. You have an unobstructed desert view - there's maybe 3 nearby homes - but you're pretty much in the middle of nowhere. There is room for improvement - i.e, the shower is dark & never gets really hot - just lukewarm with poor pressure. The fireplace could use a good cleaning - the place gets a little smoky when in use. Our biggest gripe is that the patio lighting doesn't work - so at night, it's literally pitch dark in front of the house, you can't sit outside and hang. It would be amazing if they could install little lights on the ground guiding you to the jacuzzi - it's about 30 feet away from the house itself, and like I said, in the desert, in the middle of nowhere, at nighttime, it gets pitch black outside!! We had to stumble over to the jacuzzi w/ a flashlight leading the way. Despite these sometimes frustrating setbacks - the place is special. You'd never have this experience in a hotel or anywhere else. It feels like you're staying at a family member's home while they're away for the weekend - it has love, character, some maintenance issues - but it's welcoming and forces you to just slow down, relax, do absolutely nothing for 3 days. My boyfriend & I are decidedly critical with high expectations. We're definitely all about luxury & superfluous amenities. However... we keep coming back here!! Our advice: don't go expecting a 5-star resort like experience - but definitely go. The desert surrounding the home is magical and the Adobe is the place to experience it. read more

Just got back from Godwin Ranch. Great trip. The house is so cute and very desert rustic. It's so quiet out there and the big swinging bed in the back yard is a magical touch for sure. Loved the Meteor shower on Friday night. Great to have a BBQ to grill up some yummy food from the organic market we found in Joshua Tree on the way out there. The park was only 10 minutes away too, which was great. read more

Couldn't have been happier with our stay at Witt's End. Our group (more than 18 people) actually rented out two houses here for a weekend retreat last year. I never saw the other one (Oasis) though I heard it was well-appointed. So, though I can only speak for Witt's End, I must say it was quite awesome. A large main house, a loft, fully stocked kitchen, patio with fireplace, a big guest house with pool and pingpong tables, a TV and stereo stocked with DVDs and CDs, and even golf clubs and balls to hit across the wide property. Clean linens on all the beds. When our hot tub wasn't working, the management even went to the trouble of opening up another house across the street just so we could use the hot tub over there. Talk about service. Going back in a few weeks and looking forward to it. read more

I freaking love Joshua Desert Retreats' Twentynine Palms location. My graduate program has an annual retreat and we've stayed at Oasis/Witt's End for the past two years and had a fantastic time. I booked through John, who was magnificent about working with me to figure out which of their accommodations would be best for my group: he was very communicative, offered a lot of helpful ideas/information, and generally made organizing a 20+person retreat dream-smooth. The houses themselves were fantastic. Witt's End sleeps 14 (it's got a main house with a kitchen, a bunk-style house with pool table, ping pong and other games, and a little rom with two twin beds that ended up being perfect for people who wanted a peaceful place for their pets to hang out), and Oasis sleeps six. Both properties have hot tubs, fully equipped kitchens, communal living areas, very comfortable furniture, and huge fun desert lots that are kind of perfect for running around, lounging, reading, partying, you name it. The kitchens are fully stocked with cooking and servingware and lots of pantry staples (salt, spices, etc. -- everything you always intend to bring then forget); there are towels and books and bed linens. Literally all you have to bring here is food and yourself! It's perfect for a retreat because you get the desert isolation of camping, the comfort of a hotel or cabin and the seriously-don't-stress-they've-taken-care-of-EVERYTHING of ... well, I don't know. I don't remember the last time in my life I haven't had to worry about some detail or other. Probably my favorite thing about Witt's End and Oasis, though, is how much personality they have. There are tons of little nooks in the Witt's End lot (where I spent most of my time) where you find lawn furniture or a set of golf clubs or a random statue or -- I mean, find out yourself. Same in the houses: there are games and books and hats and desert art and awesome, unusual decorative lights on the porch. Staying in Witt's End is kind of like staying in the home of someone you've never met but you immediately know you'd like very, very much. Spacious yet intimate, great place to bond with a group. Hard to beat the distance from Josua Tree National Park too, of course. And perfect place for meteor-watching. I saw twenty-three in my first two nights there this year, and November isn't exactly prime meteor-watching season! read more

Absolutely wonderful! We stayed at Wikiup for my husbands birthday and the booking process was very easy and personable. Nick was very nice which makes a difference with this sort of thing. I hate going places where rules are shoved down your throat and any misstep will cost you money. With them it was very simple - if you're not a dummy and you are respectful then you are fine. (They didn't actually say that). There weren't signs everywhere telling you what you can and can't do which makes staying at places very stressful. - This happened to me in Big Bear which is why it's a thing for me. ANYWAY - Also the place was very clean and simple and the kitchen was well equipped so you could make dinners there. And there were beds to accommodate everyone so that was good. Finally, the view - ah, the view was amazing. And it's dog friendly!!! A big plus and a big reason we'll be able to come back! Thanks for a wonderful weekend! read more

Amazing group of houses just north of Joshua Tree. I went out there all by myself and had my own house on a 5 acre lot with unobstructed views of the desert. Each of their houses is completely different so you can stay in a different experience every time. I was in a one room adobe with a sunken fire place, outdoor shower, and a sun patio with pot bellied stove. Can't wait to stay again at a different one. Best of all the prices are amazing. A totally affordable vacation spot for those of us who can't afford a house in Palm Springs and prefer the more rustic side of the park anyway. read more

Witt's end is a perfect retreat for anyone with a large group that is looking to stay in an eclectic place off the beaten path. Our group stayed there in 2007 and we absolutely loved it. In fact, we didn't leave the compound for the entire weekend except to go to the Integratron! The outdoor fireplace and Jacuzzi make it a perfect place to spend the evenings outdoors looking at the stars. The place is well appointed and very clean and everyone was happy with their rooms. Back in June, we went to Pappy & Harriets for a Peter Murphy concert and decided to make a long weekend out of it. We chose to stay at Joshua Desert Retreat's Jackalope for some wonderful seclusion amongst the beauty of the Mojave . . . the Jackalope did not disappoint. From the hot tub situated in the totally private fenced-in backyard - to the beautiful house decor - everything was perfect! But the three best things I remember from our stay at the Jackalope were: 1) Gazing at an almost full moon from the cozy front-yard hammock; 2) The baby jack rabbit that came out to greet us every time we walked out the front door; and most of all - 3) The quiet and seclusion the Jackalope provided for two very stress-out Los Angeleans. Our stay at the Adobe house was great experience. We spent a lot of time just relaxing around the house. The property was fun walking around and looking at the different cactuses. It was close to town and far away enough for peace and quiet. We locked ourselves out one night and the management was kind enough to come right over and unlock the door for us. We can't wait to return to Joshua desert retreats and stay at they're different properties. read more

My husband and I stayed at Jackalope cabin the last week of February, and it was a very relaxing atmosphere. John made the reservation process easy, and the cabin was meticulously clean and comfortable. It seems that everything you might need has been considered and provided. We drove the short distance to Joshua Tree National Park and enjoyed a day of hiking and sightseeing, then came back to enjoy cocktails, a hot tub, and fire in the back yard. The completely fenced back yard was great for our two dogs, and the silence of the desert invited reading and some good rest. No wifi, or at least not when I was there, and not a lot to do but relax, which was fine with us. read more

My husband and I stayed at Valle Vista with another couple for a quick getaway weekend from LA. It was perfect. Quiet, clean and although the drive wasn't bad at all it felt like it was a world away. After a weekend of beers, bbq, reading, and sitting on lounge chairs staring off into the distance we came back completely refreshed. We can't wait to go back! read more
