Stopped in Friday night with my husband since we were staying at the hotel next door. The restaurant was definitely busy! But plenty of seating, TVs with the olympics and room for snowmobilers to leave their helmets. Our waitress was very friendly, quickly greeting us and taking out drink order. My husband got a bush light and I got a diet coke. We asked what was good, she told us they were known for their burgers but recommended the specials so that what we ordered! My husband got the steak tips and mashed potatoes with a side salad - it was sooooo good and had great flavor. I ordered the philly sandwich with fries Let me tell you... It was one of the best philly steak sandwiches I have had, it was the perfect combo of peppers, steak, cheese, sauce and bun. Highly recommend. Great little bar with excellent food! We came into town late and this one of the only places open for dinner. We came into the bar and it was a younger crowd. The music was extremely loud. There was one server but she was very attentive. The perch is the best thing we ordered. The fish was excellent and hot and crispy. Honestly, the best fish I've had in the UP. I wish they had homemade tartar sauce. But that is okay. The wings were just okay. Very hot but overly breaded. The fries were hot and crispy. The burger was hand formed and cooked well. I would go back and just get the perch though. This is a great place to grab a quick bite, just be prepared for very loud music. read more

Came in late after our trip to the falls. Definitely a local spot! Our server was great and on point, even with what seemed to be, just her the only one serving and bartending. The food was good! The mozzarella sticks were a first for in that they were rolled similar to an egg roll, just with cheese inside, but good still. The burger was good and flavors full, the wings were breaded and fried crispy but could use some buffalo sauce. The perch fish basket was absolutely delicious. The fish was perfectly cooked, nice and flaky and full of flavor. A house made Tatar sauce would be better with it! The place was also a bar so coming in a bit late was definitely load in there with local young crow hangs. So it can definitely can get load in there with music and conversation but overall a solid place. read more

After a long day of travel, we were looking for some simple, good food. Newberry doesn't have much in the way of food places, particularly at the time we usually end up planning dinner. We found this little bar that was a little out of the way but very much worth making the trip! Food -- My husband got "The Crowd Pleaser" burger that was a nice, big patty and was simply seasoned the way a burger should be. The onion rings were nice and crispy -- no complaints! I ordered the Perch Basket on recommendation of our waitress and it was fabulous! Nice big, flaky, pieces of perch that pulled apart and were very moist. What I didn't care for was the pre-made commercial tarter sauce that came with it -- it's pretty cheap to make, I kinda wished they had thrown together a house sauce or something. Ambiance -- It was quiet and we could have a conversation and warm up from the cold. Bathrooms -- Wheelchair accessible and single-person room. What I particularly appreciated is that there was information that if you felt you weren't safe or had been drugged, there were phone numbers you could call for help and instructions on what to do. Very unexpected from a tiny bar in the middle of nowhere. My husband and I don't drink so I can't tell you anything about the booze, but my husband enjoyed his hot chocolate! Overall, a very welcoming environment. After we left, we grabbed a room at the hotel next door (I don't recommend) and my husband went back to get an order of their Funnel Cake Fries -- they were SO good they made our sub-par hotel experience much better! read more

We stopped here with our two children for dinner. From first entry into the restaurant we were greeted by the nice woman working (she seemed to be the only one working minus somebody in the kitchen, maybe). There were a few people sitting at the bar and one other table. She took our order, was super friendly, told us they had bags/cornhole outside, and chatted just a bit. Our food came while we were outside playing and she made sure to poke her head out the door to tell us our appys were ready. Everything was so delicious, and she was attentive to us while also making sure others were doing good too. We really had a good time and ate some good food! Decent food, good service, but odd atmosphere. This place was located next to our hotel and, as such, was recommended to us by the hotel staff. We decided to give it a whirl because after a long day of traveling and the beginnings of a minor headache coming on for myself, my husband and I really didn't feel like trekking far for food and we didn't want takeout from McDonald's, so this was the clear winner when it came to nearby restaurant options for us. We headed over- it was so close, we literally could've walked over hahaha- and checked out the menu. The menu was pretty limited, lots of fried options, burgers, and of course, fish. The place was nothing to look at from the exterior. To me, it looked like it had once been someone's house and the turned it into a bar and then later and full service restaurant with a small side deck. It was weird and super easy to pass by on the highway. Truthfully, we didn't take notice of it until the desk clerk at our hotel mentioned it to us. At any rate, it looked like a typical small town Upper Peninsula dive bar on the inside, but it was clean and the waitress came over to our table promptly. She was super nice and friendly. We ordered some craft beers to start (Pix Axe and Yellow Jacket Amber) and both were top quality options for anyone who enjoys a good craft beer (I happen to). Even better was the price- they were pretty affordable, too, maybe $4 or less each. We ordered some food because we were pretty hungry by then. Like I said, the menu was limited, but they had a few dinner specials going that evening, but they were for the meat eater types and since I don't eat red meat or poultry and can't eat shellfish, I was relegated to picking the fish sandwich with fries and homemade coleslaw. My hubby picked the house burger, also paired with fries and coleslaw. After a few minutes of waiting, the bar area got so incredibly loud that we couldn't take it, anymore, and told our waitress we'd be heading outside with our drinks to the patio, along with a gaggle of other like-minded folks who just didn't want to listen to the local baseball players holding court at the bar any longer. Seriously, the decibel level seemed loud to begin with and it kept creeping up as the night wore on. The one guy's voice boomed so loud that he gave me a full-on migraine. He was so enamored with himself and his play by play of the game he had just been in that he failed to notice the massive exodus out onto the patio. We mentioned it to the waitress, who brought our food out to us soon thereafter, and she agreed he had driven off the customers. No one said anything to him. Apparently, he's friends with the owners and one of the other loud guys was a relative or something. It was ridiculous. We could hear him on the patio as if he was announcing a game or something. He continued to get louder and louder, all the while nursing his one Bud Light all evening. I guess he couldn't blame it on the booze, so what was his excuse???? The food was fine. It took awhile to come out of the kitchen, but my sandwich was fine. It wasn't outstanding, but it was clearly made from fresh fish and the fries were okay and the coleslaw was clearly homemade. It had a nice tangy kick to it, but it wasn't too creamy or too spicy, either. My hubby said his burger was pretty good, very juicy and cooked to perfection. He enjoyed the side of slaw as well. We both wished there were more coleslaw on our plates, but it is what it is. The price was pretty good, so no complaints on that, either. By the time we left, the patio was in full swing and people were outside playing corn hole and enjoying themselves. When we left, only the dudes holding court at the bar, along with a random loud chick holding a baby (no doubt, she was attached to one of the aforementioned "athletes") who kept pacing around swearing (seriously, she swore while holding a baby- IN A BAR), were still inside, other than waitstaff. Apparently, the gaggle hadn't figured out they had driven off all of the customers to the patio. I guess that's one way to clear a room. At any rate, at first glance, we didn't expect to get anything that tasted even remotely good from a nondescript little tavern, but it was alright. If only the guys at the bar would've shut up, it would've been fine. Other than that, the service was decent and the food hit the spot at a low price, although the ambiance was weird and the crass customers at the bar were too rude and obtuse to be around for longer than a hot minute. read more

We were a little bit hesitant to head over to Joshua James from the look on the outside, but does not much available in town after a full day of sledding we got back a little bit later than expected and we really just wanted to go to the place close to the hotel- we considered subway, but I really want it something warm after a day on the trails. We got there at 9:45 and knowing that they closed at 10 asked if the kitchen was open and if we could get to go and the server was so friendly with a big smile and said no, just sit right down don't worry the kitchen doesn't close till 10. You've got plenty of time. I had the mushroom Swiss burger and it was unbelievably good and I was able to also get sweet potato fries. I waited to write the review because I wasn't sure if the burger was just that good or if I was just really cold and hungry. I did have some leftovers and I warmed them up for lunch the next day and the burger was that good even the next day warmed up I really recommend heading over and trying out Joshua James. read more

This restaurant/bar was a great find while on our trip. We normally wouldn't have stopped here, mainly because when you drive by so quickly, it's hard to decipher if places are strictly bars that you may get lucky and serve nachos or frozen pizza, or if it is a bar and grill, that serves some tasty eats such as Joshua James did. We called ahead and they were very helpful in trying to get the Brewers game on for us (even thought it's MI!). The food was very good. Menu is posted on a whiteboard which is fine with us! Good selection. The waitress was also the bartender and handled the whole evening with a smile and good service. Reading previous reviews, please don't be so picky when they can't meet every need and have perfect lists. She set her priorities and did an amazing job. And the cook prepared our food to perfection! Didn't eat here but tried to call in an order, as we were staying at Americas Best Value Inn in Newberry Michigan, which was next door. Apparently they were busy and felt the need to pick up the phone and abruptly hang up without even saying a word! I called back thinking the person on the other end accidentally hung up. They answered and said, in a very rude way, " we are too busy to take calls" and then abruptly hung up. WOW great customer service....NOT! Glad I didn't eat here. If they act that way towards customers I hate to think what they do to their food! read more

Visited this bar because we were staying next door. Arrived around 10pm hoping for a drink and app or small meal to share. After sitting at the bar we were approached by the bartender who asked us what we would like to drink. I asked "what do you have on tap" and her reply was "nothing right now". My husband and I are pretty understanding of how difficult the whole Covid 19 issue has been on businesses so I then asked her "well what do you have" and the bartender replied while pointing up to a shelf "our beers are up there". We made due with ordering a couple of White Claws and when we asked if they had a menu the bartender replied "we only have fryer food right now"....ok we get it...it is 10:15pm so I ask "what do you have?"...to which the girl says - "we have a whiteboard over there" pointing at the wall. ‍‍ Needless to say after getting up to take a look and ordering a chicken finger basket the bartender then asked "do you need sauce?". So my husband replied "yes - what do you have?"....her reply???? "LOTS" with no further assistance....so he ordered ranch and hot sauce. The whole interaction here was painful - no customer service AT ALL to speak of. Additionally at one point the bartender and owner and spouse (only three employees there) all disappeared into the dark parking lot together while we were left sitting alone and the cash register was open...just weird. Bottom line here - save yourself a bunch of time and just drive the few miles to Timber Charlie's! ‍ read more

So, we were on a family vacation. My wife and I just finished running a 50 km race. Needless to say, we were quite hungry and decided to feed the kids, as well. The closest restaurant to our hotel was this place. When entering, we noticed immediately how clean it was. The menu is basic pub fare. I ordered the patty melt and poutine, which was very tasty. My wife and son ordered basic hamburgers, which they thought were very good. My daughters got salads, and they seem satisfied with their food. The salads were huge, and the burgers were pretty darn big too (the adult burger was a half pound and the kid's burger was a quarter pound and served with fries). Our sodas were served in cans, so there were no free refills. They have a full bar, but I can't comment on that, because we stayed sober. read more
