So, I found Joshua almost 10 years ago when I first came to LA. I liked his portfolio and booked a session with him for my headshots. It was a great experience - I was a total beginner and didn't know anything about posing for headshots. He made me feel comfortable and brought the best out in me with helpful tips and a seamless experience. The headshots were fantastic and I uploaded them to all of my casting profiles. These headshots have booked me multiple speaking roles in short films (one that went to the LA County Film Festival), a Super Bowl commercial, and multiple major modeling gigs for brands like Pacifico and AT&T. They've gotten me literally hundreds of auditions and callbacks. Over the last 10 years, I got additional headshots done by two other photographers (I couldn't remember Josh's name and hadn't bookmarked it). I still preferred Josh's original headshots over the others and kept using them instead of the newer ones. Finally, it was time for new headshots. I'd aged about a decade since those original ones I was still running. I researched some options on Google and found a portfolio I really loved - Joshua M. Shelton. I booked a session (for a great price) for four looks. When I was sent his address, it started to sound familiar. When I got there and met him again, I realized it was the same photographer from my very first session! I'd found the same guy from my first headshots without even meaning to. I contacted this person on Thursday, January 30th, 2020, early in the afternoon and asked him if he could assist me with re-sizing the art cover of my new album so that my radio campaign could start. He said that he would and even sent me an email with pricing stating that it would only take him between an hour and two to do the job. Days went by and nothing. In between, I even sent him a text message to let him know that I was ready to make a payment whenever he would send the files over. Today, February 4th, 2020, after having hung up the phone with the radio promoter who needs the re-sized art cover to move forward, I made another phone call to Joshua Michael Shelton, who, without a care in the world, told me that he had not worked on his computer since the last time we spoke over the phone, which was Thursday, January 30th, 2020. He also claims to have had family over and sounded very nonchalant. According to him, he did not have found one to two hours to work on this project and was not willing to work on this project. I mentioned to him that he should have let me know this way before so that I could have gone through somebody else. If I had not called him today, I would have never found out that he was not going to do what he had said he would. What a waste of time and energy!! I definitely would not recommend him. Photoshoots are expensive, thus it's worth your time to read what people think. Unprofessional, unreliable, poor communicator. These are what pop up when I think of Joshua Shelton and Headshots LA. I explain with an example below. First of all, here are the required steps to book your appointment: 1. Book the time slot online 2. Pay for everything before you email him 3. Email him to confirm if your time is confirmed, because he also books others offline. I emailed him with examples a month ago to replicate a corporate headshot and he suggested to use the rooftop. Because I was uncomfortable with this deviation from my intention, I followed up requesting any recent corporate rooftop shots since none were posted. He never replied. Fast forward one month and after texting/emailing/voicemailing to remind him of the sample, he finally emailed me back but never replied with any samples. Instead, he said that rooftop headshots are not a normal request because those are for fashion shoots. But...I never really wanted that in the first place. Maybe he forgot what he said a month prior. I confirmed the time slot online, so I showed up during my two-hour slot and knocked once on the door. I waited about 3~5 minutes politely as he took his sweet time to turn off his TV and finally answer. He then said that someone else was coming within 30 minutes and he had too much work so he was too busy. No apologies. Strange how his time slots work. He has no regard for the amount of time and money people use to get ready for their shots--he's busy. DO NOT WAIST YOUR MONEY!! So I saw the groupon Josh has for 1 hr session for $89 for boudoir pictures for my upcoming wedding anniversary. I called on a Monday and asked if he had anytime early in the week and explained to him that my anniversary weekend was coming up and I wanted the pictures to give to husband. He was nice enough to book me the next day Tuesday at 4 so I will give him that. So I got there and the parking was horrible so by the time I got to the door it was like 4:05 pm. Anyway I finally got up and changed by 4:15. He was really laid back and kept telling me to relax so he could take my pic (Ahh ok don't know how since I have not ever done anything like that. I was so nervous that I even cut my time short by like 10-15 minutes since to be honest I just wanted to get OUT! I even paid him $100.00. Over what the groupon package was since I felt he was ok. As I was leaving he didn't give me any time frame of when my pics would be ready it almost felt like I was being rushed out. I was really excited thinking this would be epic to give my hubby. I waited for an email Tuesday night nothing waiting all day Wednesday and nothing so I text him asking when should I expect to get the pictures and he text me back that I should have them on Thursday night. So guess what I did??? Waited and got NOtHING!!! I have been texting all day Friday and calling him and he does not answer. What a poor lack of professionalism. Josh should be more clear and indicate that the $89.00 session is just his time taking pictures and you get nothing. Why advertise if you don't follow thru? Beware people! Beware! read more

I recently shot with Joshua about two months ago. I found him from word of mouth and I was impressed by his style of photographs. I've shot with many photographers and some shots just looked too cheesy and posed; Josh's photos are not like that. He has a natural talent to bring out the best qualities in a person's photo. Josh is an amazing photographer. He gives great direction, and knows how to take a good photo, and even better, gives clear and concise direction to get you to take a good photo. He's laid back, and not bossy or high strung, which is appreciated. He makes you feel right at home. He's very fair to the people he works with in matters of price. I bought a specially priced package of 4 looks for 400$. I asked him about his pricing because, c'mon, head shot prices can cost up to 1000$ with a professional photographer. I saw on Josh's website all these beautifully photographed head-shots, which were much better than some of the other photographer sites I had looked at, and charged twice as much, and thought he must be a scam. I called him, and asked why his prices were so reasonable. Josh explained that he understands that actors and models don't always make a lot of money, that he loves what he does, and wants to reach a wider array of people, hence pricing lower than market value makes room for that. He's also a great guy. On my shoot, I booked a make-up artist who was inexperienced with creating looks for commercial and head-shot shoots. He was used to doing highly theatrical make-up and more extreme looks for Zombie movies, and that kind of thing. He was overly ambitious and my makeup made me look like one of the cancan dancers in Moulin Rouge. I was way overdone. 3 of the looks were great. Unfortunately, one of my looks was totally unusable because of my hair and make up; I looked like Bride of Frankenstein. Josh offered to retake my final look on a different day. I rescheduled with him, and was able to get the look I originally wanted. Josh is awesome, and I feel very lucky I got to work with him. There is one thing I feel like I should mention, because this was a part of my experience working with Josh, is that he is very laid back. It's not a bad thing at all, but all the same, not what I expected and it did throw me off a little bit at first. I'll be honest, when our shoot first started, his subdued demeanor confused me, and I thought that he was maybe being unprofessional, because usually photographers or filmmakers are more 'get to it' and 'down to business.' That's not Josh. he's very mellow, chill, relaxed. It was nice because I didn't feel rushed or pressure to move things forward, and even if it did throw me off at first, his relaxed attitude mellowed me out, and I believe it helped me able to take better photos. I only mention Josh's laid back style as a possible negative, because it wasn't what I had been used to with other photographers, and it may not be what you're used to either. So when you go in for your shoot with Josh, you'll enjoy his calm, composed and tranquil demeanor, and you'll never want to work with any other photographer besides Josh again. read more

I would give Joshua M. Bullshit Photography 0 stars if I could. After reading these raving reviews about him, we decided to go to him to get 2 portraits shots of my brother and I. Over the phone we were quoted $150. Decided to purchase the yelp deal ($99 for $175), which he didn't honor, saying that the deal was only for head shots. Nowhere on here does it say the deal applies to head shots only. We overlooked that and ended up paying him $150 like he had asked. At the end of the shoot we asked to print two of the photos out for us, which he said he'd charge $25 for photo editing. That's fine, we said we'd pay when we picked the photos up. A week later, he still hasn't contacted me to pick the photos up (he initially told us it'd take 2 days, and that he'd give us a call), so I hit him up and ask if the pics are ready. It was, and we headed over to pick 'em up. When we get there, he comes out with photos that HAD OUR HEADs CHOPPED OFF. His excuse was that if he had printed them out in size he originally promised us, they would look unproportional. Wtf? So you decided to chop our heads off without consulting us? Not to mention, the photos itself were TERRIBLE quality, with pixelated lines throughout the pics (told us it was printed at CVS), AND to make everything worse he requested $25 PER picture editing (mind you, the "edited" pics looked exactly the same as original) PLUS $10 for each pictures printed. At this point I'm speechless and pissed, there's no way in hell I'm going to pay him additional for the pics he printed because they, like i've said, had our heads partially cut off with horrible quality. We ended up paying him $50 for "photo editing" and walked away with those shitty pics that we threw away shortly after. Now, I do not have have never left bad reviews on yelp; I try to let people slide for their mistakes and shortcomings but this..was on a whole another level. Josh was awesome! I had never had a professional photo shoot before and Josh made me feel like I was a model. I bought a groupon for a photoshoot with Josh and I am so glad I did! I looked at his website and his photographs are amazing! I only wish I looked like those models! He does a lot of headshots that look AMAZING and his fashion shoots are also SO amazing. He was so easy to get in contact with, it was really easy scheduling my shoot via email. He gave me some tips via email as well as to what to do/bring with me. I brought several different solid colored shirts with me and I was going to have two looks. Josh did a great job helping me pick out what to wear. He got to know me and figured out what kind of look I was going for. His studio is located right in the heart of downtown, right across from the Staples Center! It was awesome! The day I went was the day of the Grammys, so a lot of the streets were closed and there was a lot of traffic, but it was super easy to find parking. I was amazed by the view he had, a lot of natural light for his studio. Starting with the photoshoot -- at first I felt dumb because I didn't know how to pose. Its a lot harder than it seems! You have to give the photographer different expressions and variations, which I thought was hard. but I got the hang of it after a while. Josh was super professional and friendly, giving advice on how to pose next to make the pictures look good. After the photoshoot was over, Josh gave me a little preview on his camera, and they looked so great! And best of all, the photos were uploaded onto Dropbox within 24 hours... I had like 500 pictures! It was so hard to choose my favorites to have him retouch! After picking 10 pics and asking Josh for his opinion on which ones would be best for headshots, he helped me choose. The final products were amazing! Josh made me look and feel like a model. After paying $350 for a headshot of me and picture of my office I was no even able to find 1 acceptable photo. I've never experienced that before with a so called photographer. The pictures he took were anything but professional, very very poor lighting, poor angles where instead of showing a space as it is or better the angles and lighting made is smaller dark to the point where after paying the $350 we could not use a single photo. He was rushed the entire time, did not get the photos to me when he said he would and all he could talk about was going on a trip with his friends and having fun that's why he forgot about the pictures and he kept repeating that while I had a deadline for the pictures. Very very unprofessional and I'm sorry to say but I have to be honest lacking any talent, he is not a professional photographer by any means. Save your time and money. Too late for me I also spent money doing my hair and makeup for the photos and all went to waste. I will be retaking the photos with my previous photographer. read more

Joshua is THE best headshot photographer. This is the second time I've worked with him and he has a knack for capturing who you are, not just what color eyes/hair/skin you have. Joshua can do this because he is an artist and his art photography is frickin beautiful! If you have spare time ask to see some of it! The only reason I needed a second headshot session with Joshua is because my hair color changed from blonde to black, otherwise I would have been able to use my first set of photos for the next 10 years. Joshua spends the time and gives you the options with outside shoots vs studio shoots and fantastic backdrops like an aged linen looking wall that was specially commissioned out of NYC that makes your headshots look seriously high end. He never rushes you and he shows you the photos as he is taking them so you can tell him then and there if the vibe is what you are after. If it's not he will listen attentively and deliver what you want - so you know that you are going to walk away very happy! He plays whatever music you like to keep you comfortable and energized, and he has a water fountain which to me is important! Joshua never delivers a cookie cutter headshot like most of the other photographers in LA (ugh thats so 2002) - Joshua will use multiple of his many tricks to make sure you are lit to perfection and that your headshot has dimension. Before finding Joshua, I had shot with all the "top" photographers in LA and I ended up paying a lot more for headshots and looking like everyone else, which for casting purposes is no good. The process of booking with him is super easy. You just pay using the online system and email him for the time. Viola, done. His studio is huge with great natural light and also air conditioned to perfection. Simply amazing! My family had portraits done in his studio and on location in Malibu. The pictures came out so spectacularly my fiancée and I hired Josh to do our engagement photos. Again he came on location in orange county and we travelled to his studio. The results were stunning again! We were blown away and he made us look amazing (way more amazing than in real life lol!). I can't speak to his work as he didn't show for our appointment after driving to downtown LA and having no answer at his door, phone, email or text. He did respond 5 hours later and stated he was ill and would refund our money which we're hoping is in progress. My suggestion would be DO NOT EVER prepay for services you don't receive.
