Guru Nanak Darbar Gurdwara - Outside front of building

Upon arriving we removed our shoes at the shoe check, then washed our hands. Also, you need a head covering, they have them available in front of the temple as well. Also important to know is not to bring any alcohol, tobacco, or any other drugs. Upon entering there are hallways to the left and right with small empty rooms probably used for various things. Further forward there are two larger rooms. To the left is the main room with the altar and the holy book, The Guru Granth Sahib. There are people sitting there singing and meditating. Musicians are playing music in front to the left of the altar. The second large room to the right of the front entrance is the Langar, this is a very cool fact about Sikhism, every Gurdwata is also a soup kitchen. This is a very long standing tradition where emperors sit and eat alongside with peasants. Egalitarianism is a major tenant of this faith. It's much like a buffet, you get in line and volunteer servers fill your plate as you make your way along the serving tables. The food is vegetarian to accommodate as many people as possible. If you ever want to try real Punjabi food this is the place to do it. I also brought some cash with me to make a donation, while it was not necessary I really wanted to help support this place. I saw someone who had cash in his hand so I followed him and did what he did the best that I could. I followed him back into the main meditation room, placed the cash in front of the altar, did a bow and exited left. Of the five major religions in the world, this one is pretty cool. I have gone to school with growing up, and worked alongside many Sikhs in my life, while I'm sure every cultural group has it's share of baddies, I have never personally met one in my lifetime.

When I met my husband and moved to Santa Rosa we tried to go to many churches but was so hard to find one that wouldn't skew the bible for their own agendas. We were about to give up.. Than we came to The Rock.. Pastor Ross is the absolute best Pastor I have had the honor of hearing in my adult life. My husband who was raised JW, became a Christian after 5months of going to The Rock and in his words he said "he lead me to the water.. I just had to drink" If you want to understand what the bible says, feel welcomed.. If you want to be surrounded by the most genuine people, where every pastor, deacon, every person in leadership you can see that God has called them.. This is the church for you..

I'll start with the positives: There are lots of groups here, the space, although small, is well used, and the music is absolutely amazing! All the congregates seemed so enthusiastic to be there, which really drew me in until the sermon. I also love that they offer ASL interpretations in their recorded sermons! All that being said, I found myself feeling intimidated by the amount of "fire and brimstone" preaching towards sinners and non-believers and was put off by the amount of political discussion by congregation members outside of the service that made me, an openly queer person, feel a bit unsafe and ready to get going as soon as I could. I'm so glad this place works for some people, but the lack of compassion for outsiders did not work for me.
