I have no complaints with Joystick! Every interaction I've had with them has been professional and friendly, it's a classy venue that's relaxed and fun, the drinks are great, and they open up their kitchen to cooks looking to try out their food, which I think is an awesome idea. My first time at Joystick, I asked for a kahlua and cream, but they didn't have kahlua. Instead, they worked with what they did have (including a South African liquor I hadn't known of) to give me something just as delicious. (Maybe it's silly, but I felt so special to have gotten a custom drink!) The bartenders were all very friendly and handled our large party with grace and smiles. Right now, Joystick is hosting Junk Food in its kitchen. Junk Food's grilled cheese and tomato soup dish is an innovative spin on an old classic: pullman & sharp cheddar terrine and tomato soup aspic with black basil. The aspic was creamy and savory, and the terrine was crispy and buttery. The presentation looked gourmet, and the food tasted gourmet! Not bad for $8! I wish I could have tried all the rest that Junk Food was serving that night, but I guess that just means I'll have to go back soon! I talked with Brandon, one of the guys on management, about reserving Joystick for an event. I wasn't able to make our event happen, but throughout all of our communication, Brandon answered all of my questions, gave me options, and gave me confidence that he and his team would be able to execute my plan. The main bar room has fun retro arcade games, then the back room has board games and couches. My large group loves going there for our happy hour. I've been to Joystick probably a dozen times and have always had a fantastic time. Super casual atmosphere - come as you are. Concrete floors, feels pretty grungy. The crowd is very diverse in age, gender, ethnicities, style. Everyone loves Joystick! There's one room with a full bar and a good selection of old school arcade games, all of which cost 25 cents to play. They cap the crowd on the weekends, so even when it's very full it's not totally unbearable and you still have a good shot at playing everything you want to play. The beer selection is fairly limited, but good. They make REALLY good cocktails. The bartenders put the work in! The second room is full of retro sofas, tables, lamps, and misc furniture, and board games. You feel like you're hanging out at a really hip version of your grandma's house. There's a new, third, small room in the back with a black light and about 8 more games, including two boating games! Joystick is really great for birthday parties in that your friends can come and go as they please, and pay their own way easily. Love this place. read more

I really like this place. It's a great place to chill and meet new people - you can hear both the great tunes as well as the voices of others speaking to you. Love that. There's a cool back room to get down to a producer or DJ and the games are fun - they've got all the classics you need at any good barcade. My favorite one I've been to was in Eugene, OR and this place is actually much better!! So many photo ops- great vintage decor. Also! The guy Doug (barback?) gave excellent customer service. The bartenders were also very friendly and the Cowboys and Indians drink was amazing. Day: Friday or Saturday night Parking: Well I park in the Noni's parking lot. The catch is to spend time [money] in Noni's then walk it over to Joystick. Works for me because I love them both! Wait time: Fair. If you want a seat I suggest getting there after work or late evening. Food & such: They have a chicken sandwich that you can't put down! I'm really here for the games. Jenna blocks have dares on them and most of the games are missing key pieces. I don't know if they buy them or people bring in the games and intentionally leave them. Hadn't been to an arcade bar since Ground Kontrol out in Portland about a year ago (shoot, still need to write a review for that one), so was pleasantly surprised by this place! Had the the Ginitalia + Cowboys and Indians. I enjoyed the latter more, but enjoyed watching the former being ordered more. Lots of board games and arcade games, ended up playing some grungy Jenga and kicking back. Definitely an interesting vibe, lots of cat photos and random taxidermy. It's like if your tumblr-loving sister and your hip grandma had to settle on decorating a place together for the board game area. The bathrooms were awesome - I didn't catch the artist, but the artwork was great - the walls were covered in stylized illustrations of your favorite old time-y video games characters. read more

The arcade machines were awesome, took me back to my childhood and for only $.25 a game. There weren't many board game options for two people but we stuck with video games. We did however wait for a game for about 30 minutes and ended up leaving when the people wouldn't get the hint. But it was also too tiny of a space for us to hover over them. The place itself was very crowded and we couldn't quite get comfortable because there were people everywhere we turned. This was on a Wednesday night around 8. The drinks and food must be good though because the bar was constantly packed. 3 stars based on the hour I spent in there. Great concept - I couldn't believe I found this place. It was by chance I stumbled upon it when driving through Atlanta looking for something to do. They have a bar, video games and a lounge area. This place closes around 2am... and they have food! It's in a mini downtown-like area of ATL where it's a street of a few blocks of bars and businesses. Parking is on the street or in the residential neighborhood. They have a nice variety of video games, such as Mortal Kombat, The Simpsons, and Terminator pinball. The best part? The cost to play is as much as it always was - 25 cents! That is unreal, and is WAY cheaper than going to Dave & Buster's to play a couple games. This was definitely a nostalgic place for me. What's also nice is they have a lounge area in the adjacent room with couches and tables, in case you want to do some laptop work or just chill with your pals with a drink (or not) in your hand. They have a full bar with a few seats (maybe 10), and a chalkboard above some of the games with a drink menu (or specials). They have beer on draft, and the staff is generally helpful when you need a suggestion for a beverage. read more

First time here. Got the sell tacos, which came out quick and hot and were absolutely delicious. The bartender was relaxed but attentive, and the owner was walking around and cracking jokes. I started playing a game (great selection, btw) and the owner came over and gave me a free shot for dealing with the hammering next door (there was some construction going on, but it was not terrible). I found this place after googling unique bars and I'm glad I came here. The bartender was super helpful and even gave me recommendations for more unique bars in Atlanta. He also gave me restaurant recommendations. I had the slushee drinks and they hit the spot to ease the burn of a horrible day. I enjoyed playing the video games and was pleasantly surprised they were $0.25. Not to date myself, but I remember when some games were $0.50 or a $1. Note: this review is purely for the gaming aspect, and not the food. No one in our party ordered food during our visit. We had lunch at a nearby restaurant and, as it was a slow day they were kind enough to let us leave our two cars in their lot for a while (we did ask). Our group then walked a few blocks down Edgewood to the Joystick. Hence, I can't really comment on parking at this place. The focus of the visit was gaming. Everyone in the group was either quite into the 80's arcade culture and/or owned/owns at least one arcade game. I had wanted to check this place out for a while, but it's quite a drive for me. The game selection was even better than had been indicated on their website (maybe I hadn't checked it recently enough). There were at least 5 - 6 games to rotate between which we had played a lot in the past, with more that we skipped. We probably spent 45 minutes here playing a variety of games. They also appear to have a sort of college-apartment living room-esque set-up for hanging out and dining. There also seemed to be board-games available. I ordered a hard cider to enjoy as well, given that they probably aren't making their profits on 25-cent games, even if you play a lot. It is too far away for me to be a regular, but I definitely enjoyed this! read more

TLDR: Fun spot for drinks and classic arcade games. If you're looking for something different from your typical bar scene and/or in need a night spot for your inner nerd, Joystick is a great option for a fun night. While there are no shortage of bar options on Edgewood Ave, Joystick can be a great change of pace and bring out some friendly competition amongst you and your friends. Since Joystick is right on Edgewood Ave and from what I understand, parking seems to be street parking is metered before 7 pm, but free afterwards. You will get a ticket if you don't pay - I saw tickets being put on dashboards last time I was here. While it isn't so busy during the early evening hours, it does get busy here later at night and you're probably better off with Uber, Lyft, etc. Although it's not the most extensive selection of games that I've seen at arcade bars, I do enjoy the selection of games available here. It's all about the old school arcade games at Joystick, including: - NBA Jam - Mortal Kombat - Space Invaders - Street Fighter - Galaga - Pinball What's great about Joystick is that all of the games cost only costs 25 cents per play. If you ten bucks to spare, you should be able to play almost all of the games multiple times. You can exchange ten bucks for a roll of quarters at the bar and you can get right to playing. Some of the games even have cup holders attached to the side of the machine, so you can safely put your drink down while you play. As far as drinks go, there are draft, bottle, and can beer options, wine, shots, cocktails, and boozy slushies available. There are two slushie options available: cranberry sage and bourbon coffee. While both of them are good, I would go with the bourbon coffee. It's $7 for a single and $12 for a double shot, which would come out in a pint of slushie. Overall, I think Joystick is a fun spot and you can't go wrong with this place. read more

I really wanted to like this bar. I really did. The drink menu sounded interesting, I'm a board game and video game aficionado, and I like to have a good time. Our experience at Joystick was unwelcoming, lackluster, and the drinks were unimpressive. First off, the Rockband host was extremely racist towards my friend. He made an insensitive comment about her race (by the way, he didn't even profile her correctly, because she's not Vietnamese) in an ill fated attempt to be funny. It was only from the clear disapproval of the ENTIRE ROOM that he attempted to assuage the situation by asking 'where she's from.' No apologies, just backhanded, subtle racism. On to the drinks. I had the bourbon coffee slushy, and it was alright. Nothing to rave about, the first sip was better than the sixth. I'd stick with their beer selection, which is adequate. The sodas sounded interesting; I wished there were more cocktail options that incorporated the honeyed hibiscus. All in all, for a bar that touts to be about community, I hope you have a conversation with the Rockband host about cultural sensitivity. read more

Having the games set at .25 a game is really nice and $5 had us playing through the couple of drinks we had time for.. I've been going to Joystick for several years now, and I'm gone during a myriad of experience. Birthdays, hanging out, bar hopping, or just to show an out-of-tower a cool place with cheap games. It's segmented into two areas: the first is where the bar and arcade games are located, and the second room that has tables and a foosball table, as well as board games you can peruse for free. It's a pretty chill spot, and I actually prefer it to Battle and Brew because the clientele here seems older, and like they've seen some shit. I don't make a habit of hanging out here, but I like going once in a while. PROS: -0.25 games are pretty hard to beat. Unless they're free, which I've seen at some arcades. But hey, twenty-five cents isn't bad at all. -Food is also pretty cheap, when the kitchen wants to serve it. CONS: -There is no parking here, and you are one of the lucky ones if you find it. I forgot this the last time I was here, so I drove around for about 10 minutes before lucking out. And that was in the early afternoon. -These are vintage games, and because of that they selection is pretty limited. The "good" games could fill up for hours. THE VERDICT: I have complicated feelings about and for Joystick. On the one hand, I definitely appreciate that 25 cent gameplay, but on the other hand the pretentious clientele and snobby bartenders makes me roll my eyes. It's the definition of a dive bar, which gives it both hipster and cheap cred. The well drinks are cheap, the food is relatively cheap, and the gameplay is so cheap, you can expect people to hover around every game several people deep on a weekend. Want some food an hour before the kitchen closes? They may or may not want to serve you, it all depends on the wait staff or if the kitchen decided to close early. I was in ATL for one night and was seeking a chill place to visit with my friend. This was exactly suitable for that need considering I love a good ole barcade! The ambiance fit my mood with the eclectic decor and a throwback to the good stuff. All while featuring a drink in my hand! Which, by the way, I appreciate a house drink for only $5. Very refreshing compared to many other bars in major cities. This place does have an interesting set up. I only saw one main bar toward the entrance. It's also accompanied by some old games. Then you can walk into another room where there are lots of comfy seats or high tops. You can play a few board type games, the machines, or table top games. Then, there's another dark room with a strobe where you can get your shimmy on if you really wanna dance. It was a little random, and dead this past Saturday, but my friends and I took advantage of that to request our own tunes! Overall it's a cool place to checkout. Now, this is more like it! Videos games. Booze. Pinball. Cuties with [redacted]. I'm here for it, Joystick. I'm here for all of it. I love when going out entails activities that are, somewhat, removed from the usual. As you can read from my reviews, I am not at all a fan of dive bars. BUT spruce one up a fair amount, add things to do, wood/metal seating (cloth = bedbugs and that isht ain't going down), a diverse crowd, and a slush machine that serves cold liquor and you have a very happy Johnny T. Joystick isn't very large but the space is really well apportioned. Walk in (gotta get past the bouncers first) and you have a choice: hit the bar in front of you or get distracted by the video games on either side. Now, this is a tough decision. On one hand, there's a Four Roses/coffee slushie/smoothie thing that's served in a pint glass, has the consistency of a milkshake (bushwacker) and will sit you on your a$$ if you have more than one or take it down too quickly. On the other hand, games like Ms. Pac-Man, Centipede and X-Men await you. And to play these games only costs a quarter per go 'round. What to do? Get a drink, break a dollar and have at it. There are glass holders by every game so you can concentrate on the task at hand. Beyond being a Ms. Pac-Man pro (is it me or is Ms. Pac-Man a much better game than Pac-Man?), my X-Men skills are without equal. Even when I was stuck playing Cyclops, I laid every MFer out with optic blasts. I ain't nothin' nice in the virtual world. But, there's more. Walk up the slight incline, step into the back and... what? Couches (pass). Tables & seats (acceptable). Foosball (imagine Kathy Bates saying it). And THE DOLLY PARTON PINBALL MACHINE!!! Done. DONE! Next to Dolly was Star Trek (pinball). I was killing it when I came up against an Acid Queen who kicked my butt. Luckily, I had the cool embrace of my boozy smoothie to heal my pain. I don't know that one spends an entire night at Joystick but it's a pretty epic place to pregame for a night of revelry. I could also see coming here as a distraction on a slow night. If you *have* to get some food in your belly, they have a pretty decent food situation but I tend to stay away from eating at bars... so I can't tell you one way or the other. But who needs to eat when there's the Dolly Parton pinball machine? Priorities, people! read more

This place was a lot of fun. They had really good drinks that were pretty reasonably priced and the place was full of old arcade games that were all only a quarter to play. I've been to similar places before but it's always been that the good games cost more. I tried both the boozy slushees and they were both awesome. I had the coffee one first in hopes that some caffeine would keep me going for the evening. It was a little thin for a frozen drink so it was easy to drink it super fast and really that would be my only complaint. I then tried the blackberry bramble slushee and that was delicious and tangy. I like gin, but not usually in fruity drinks since it has that strong juniper berry taste, but that taste didn't really shine through in this slushee and it was just really delightful. I knew I'd like the coffee one but I was pleasantly surprised by the blackberry one. This is a really fun place to visit with friends. If you arrive early enough (before 10p), you can beat the line and secure comfortable seating and a table. They have some classic arcade games, pinball machines and plenty of board games. The service is always quick and friendly. Combining classic arcade games and adult beverages may sound like a proof system, but it's all about execution. This place has x-men, ninja turtles, NBA Jam, Pac-Man, Wave Thunder (come on! This place is fun! It gets packed in there but we came early because we were hosting a mixer with 2 large groups there. There is essentially 2 large "rooms" and 1 backroom where you can play guitar hero and such. When you first enter, the main bar area is dark has retro arcade games lining the walls. The bartenders are friendly. The atmosphere is not pretentious. Everyone seemed to be friendly and having a good time. The 2nd room is brighter and there are tables where you can sit around and play random board games. There is a foosball table in the corner that we enjoyed playing. There are several couches to sit. The space is tight though so you might have to squeeze past people constantly. This place was fun. I would definitely recommend for a chill night out. Only downside is the area. It did seem kind of shady. We suggest taking a uber there instead of parking. I heard from a local that their friend's car got broken into in the area recently. Also, the bar next door had a bouncer with a bullet-proof vest on...don't know to make of that When it gets later, the bouncers stop people from coming in periodically, almost like some exclusive club but I think it was for capacity reasons. There was no cover though. When we left and waited outside for our Uber, there was a lot of people out in the area and especially a lot of cars at the gas station. read more

Joystick is a concept made for people like me -- nerds who occasionally like to go boozin'. Ambience: First of all, the place is quite small, and gets incredibly packed once 8:30 or 9pm rolls around. So, get there in time to stake out your favorite spot at the bar, or to claim your territory at a game. I love that they had Stranger Things playing on Netflix at the lounge area, and they keep it kind of dark throughout the place -- just like a real arcade! Games: They have all those 80s and 90s classics that you grew up playing. The ones I could see were Galaga, Ms. Pac Man, Space Invaders, Mortal Kombat II, and my personal favorite... Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time (woo, turtle power!). There are loads more though, and the area is organized nicely so it doesn't feel cluttered. And now my favorite category -- Booze: The cocktails here are incredibly creative and mostly delish. They rotate, so they keep things from going stagnant. I was what the youth call "feeling myself" when I left, so my memory is a bit fuzzy, but I recall sipping on a delightful gin drink with a fresh sage leaf (my favorite of the bunch), something called a Scorpion that was a bit too sweet for my taste, and a Diva which was sassy and fresh. Fun! The cocktails are very cute and they have a moderate variety of games. I got the rosemary drink and quite enjoyed it. If you're looking for a strong drink, however, just note that it is not. It was just perfect for me. The only thing I dislike about this place is the fact that you have to pay to play the games. They're 25 cents. Most game bars I've ever been to have free games. read more
