We went to this dive bar on a whim not knowing what to expect. They were doing an 80s night so we gave it a go. Cover was $10 per person but it was so worth it! The drinks were around $10 and packed a good punch. There was a photobooth, a dance area with a DJ on stage, and a lounge downstairs with pinball machines and a cute doggie. The staff were friendly and we had such a fun night! Everyone was dancing and having fun. It felt like a judgement free zone and it was a good experience. I would love to visit again! read more

The bartender downstairs kicked us out for a member of our friend group(Me)slipping and causing a screen to roll up on the wall. We had such an amazing time at Star Bar last night. It has a wonderful atmosphere, so friendly. We're in our 50's and "The Kids" were so sweet and loving, I'd love to return here. Very economical - just $5 to get in and my club soda was free. We loved the music, the decor, everything. I loved that the doors were open so we had no COVID fears. I was super lucky when I visited Atlanta because it just so happened to be on the one week a month when a live band was playing for free (no cover!) on a Thursday. As Robert M. points out this is just once a month. Drinks are pricey as usual when you're at the bar, but if you read above the bar they have specials going on. Music is loud and the crowd is pretty friendly, so it's a great place to hangout, drink a few beers and enjoy some music from either a DJ or a live band. They do allow smoking inside, just FYI, for some that will be a positive and for others a drawback. It's comfortable located in five-points so you'll be in a fun area even if you want to head out! read more

This place smells like cheese and I mean EXACTLY like cheese. I mean if you are super into cheese, I guess this is the place for you. The drinks are watered down and the people who work here are about as friendly as cops #ACAB. The only positive here is that the music is decent. I wouldn't come back here. read more

Star Bar is like a little slice of Texas shithole dolloped right on the creamy center of Little 5 Points. Of course, that's the whole reason people go there: it should pretty much be your capital if you're into rockabilly/surf/swing/cowpunk/dives. They have a tiny dirty little stage where bands of such a nature play 6 days a week, through a very mediocre sound system. Again: this is what people go for. PBR and the potential fist fight and Johnny Cash on the jukebox and lots of grime. They even have a little altar to Elvis, fixed with tons of memorabilia, where you can pop your head in and pay tribute. That's not a joke. Star Bar definitely isn't my cup of tea. Mainly because sometimes I drink a cup of tea. Tea drinkers aren't allowed in Star Bar. You need at least two tattoos and an exwife. Or long hair (metal style, not pretty boy) and a leather vest. All that said, they have one of the best karaoke nights in Atlanta, simply because all the people who usually hang out there actually try to stand up drunk on stage and warble Judas Priest. I've only been to Star Bar a couple of times (sorry, I'm not a music genius) on Monday nights for their comedy open mike. When I first went, there were about 20 people in the audience (not including the comics). When I went last Monday, there were about 60 people in the audience. Looks like open mike at Star Bar is blowing up! I've been served by two bartenders who were equally cool although I do kind of favor the one with the big curly afro (sue me, I like big curly afros, especially on white guys). On these nights, I haven't been drinking alcohol and sometimes a bartender will diss you when you're not drinking beer or liquor but these guys didn't do that (but I did tip them as if I'd gotten an alcoholic beverage - service is service). Parking is plentiful and free on Monday nights (other nights someone will harass you for money, especially on the weekends). As of this writing there is no cover for the Monday open mike. The only downside is the smoke. I don't smoke, but it seemed like everyone else in the building did. I left about an hour and a half and felt like I'd probably sacrificed a third of a lung in there. In summary, it's a good vibe and a good intimate venue for comedy, so check it out! read more

I'm "Yay- a fan!" mostly for the EPIC Elvis sanctuary in the back corner of this L5P venue. They've really outdone themselves with the prayer stool. Thank yuh vurry much. Overall though, Star Bar is not a place I would visit too regularly. You've got the dirty bathrooms, the malfunctioning toilets, the ash covered floors, and the worst part? A COVER FOR A DIVE BAR. Kills me, but it's reasonable since there are always bands playing, and you've gotta support them, am I right? It's most fun to see a show and take comfort in the fact that there are TWO bars, all within about 10 yards of each other. The high points of Star bar would include: 2 bars, cheap-er drinks, indoor smoking, intimate venue, photo booth, greasy strangers, the Grace-tuary, easy-to-find parking, the occasional sketch-artist. Went to the Star Community Bar with a friend for a somewhat underground open-mic. I was disappointed because the artists that I expected weren't there and weren't even mentioned throughout the night after paying $10, but I wont base my review on this because it's not the bar's fault. I haven't been to many dive bars in Atlanta ( I've been to hole in the wall once), but I remember the small bars when I was in college. This bar gives me that kind of feel. Parking is behind the bar, there's an attendants booth, but that night it was free. I would still bring some cash on a busy night though. From the outside star bar looks quaint and it is. There are two bars and a small stage. They allow smoking, something I'm not used to, so come prepared. I ordered a bob marley, but got something different. The drink was still good and only $5.50 for a well. They have cheap beer prices too, I believe certain beers were a dollar but no more than $3. This is an awesome place to see underground artists, the acoustics were really good. I enjoyed myself and I would try it again. read more

Great live music venue. Got here for the Fabulous Thrillbillys Christmas Spectacular and was not disappointed. Strong drinks for fair prices, great music, and a great crowd. Only complaint was the smoking. It's almost 2020 and still allowing smoking inside makes for a less than perfect environment. read more

Dive bars are sadly growing scarce in our quickly homogenizing city. Stein Club and the Beer Mug both faced down bulldozers and lost. Fuzzy's, The Phoenix, Backstreet (and if you discount Backstreet's status as a dive, then you've obviously never been there at 5am) gone, gone and gone. That's why we should thank our lucky, Little 5 hearts for The Star Bar. I'll admit: I don't go here much any more. The Tuesday Night Dance Party has started the same time for the past 12+ years, but seemingly gets later and later as these bones age. Open Mic Comedy Mondays and PunkRotnkee's Karaoke were fun until my Tuesday mornings became significantly less so. But occasionally The Star Bar will have a show I will want to see or the stars, the calendar, and a holiday will align that will allow me to come play. In those cases, it's still the same old Star Bar I first saw those many, grimy moons ago. As you enter, two bars are to the left and to the right. You'll get the same service from each so just pick one. If the line is too deep, the Vinyl Lounge downstairs has a full bar as well. The crowd varies depending on the night, the event and the band(s) booked. There may be a few regulars. Granted, I'm not the only one who's aged and it's become something of a punkabilly rest home of sorts, but don't let them intimidate you. In living out their Bukowski fantasies, they're much more interested in meeting their Makers Mark than in meeting you. That said, the drinks are relatively cheap, especially if you stick with the house special, PBR. The photo booth works and, unlike The Local's, it's in color. Depending on at which point during the night pictures are taken, color may be a good or a bad thing. Finally, I'd be remiss if I failed to mention the Elvis shrine. It's towards the left as you enter, in the old vault. Light a few candles. Pick a song from the jukebox (believe me, you may not hear it right away, but it works.) Slip a coin in the slot and make a wish. Gaze upon the golden toilet bowl. Once you've done all that, let the spirit of Elvisness wash over you. One visit to the Elvis shrine will stay with you long after you, and Elvis, have left the building. read more

This dive bar took me back to the best years of my life. Super smokey, loud live band, great posters and things to look at on the wall. The bartender was nice and not overly friendly. I was visiting from CA as a tourist but felt like I was home. Loved the whole ambiance. Like stepping into my local bar after a college exam in the 90's. read more

D.J Romeo Cologne knows how to spin those oldies and when I say oldies I mean Jackson Five and so forth..."I can feel it, I can feel it" It doesn't matter who you are, young, old, prep or punk...you will be here and you will be dancing. The music is great, the crowd smells of variety and fun, and the drinks are cheap. No seriously, they have a drink called "The Cheap Shit". lol $2 draft. :oD $7 cover on Tuesdays and if you check out their website they have live bands listed on other nights as well. I love this place! I'm never disappointed and I can always count on them if I skipped a run that day because you'll get plenty of excercise movin' your legs, shaking your hips, and poppin your a**.... This is the diviest of dive bars. But in the best possible way. I came here a few months ago when one of my co-workers was actually playing in a Waylon tribute band competition. He invited the office, and because my co-workers are awesome almost all of us showed up to support him. Star Bar is divey, a little trashy and just the right amount of country that you'd expect from a smokey bar serving PBR and Bud LIght unabashedly. And typical of most bars with musical acts, they didn't start performing until an hour after it was supposed to start, my friend didn't go on with his band until an hour and a half after his set should have played and we all cheered so loudly and raucously for him - partly because we'd had time to imbibe a lot and partly because that's just how the office is. It was a lot of fun though - it got super crowded, people were dancing and singing along. Great time and pretty good music, even though country music's not my thing. Best of all, our coworker's a really good singer and guitar player, which no one knew before that night. Great stuff. read more

God, I love this place. Even though I can't stand cigarette smoke, and the bar establishment itself is pretty beat up, I'm by no stretch of the word 'classy', and Star Bar fits me just right. If a local band is actively playing shows, they will 95% chance play here at some point. There's also no real scene restriction- any type of band can play almost any type of music. I've seen it all. Upstairs is the main bar and venue area, with a downstairs weird lounge area and small secondary bar, reminiscent of purgatory at the Masq. Seems uncomfortable, so I've always opted for the patio. Great for summer nights when everyone is basically wasted and has forgotten that they're not inside and don't need to scream at each other to have an audible conversation. I'm docking 1 star for the $0.25 beers they decided to make a thing on Thursday nights- and then stopped. Yeah, beer from a bar, for 25 cents. The manager probably stopped doing it because the employees DGAF and were filling the plastic cups (that you get at fast food places for water) way past the 25 cent mark with whatever cheap, shitty beer they were serving. I came here with a big crowd once and we over drank and over bloated ourselves on that nonsense. Good times. Then I showed up a few weeks later, and asked about the same deal, and they apparently just stopped doing it. It took a while before the bartenders could actually confirm this, until one disgruntled guy said no. Like I said, the employees DGAF. This is also the only place I've ever seen my dad (yes, my FATHER) ROCK OUT. Not in the crowd, on stage. He's been in local bands for as long as I can remember, but always played music that just never really appealed to me that much. I'd seen him play numerous times as well, some of those also at the Star Bar, but one particular time he was with a band (yes, full of old men) that he doesn't usually play with and they fucking killed it. It was awesome and I've never seen it before, or since. I really didn't realize my dad could be that awesome on guitar, after all these years. THANK YOU STAR BAR. read more

Every city needs a local music scene, and these bands need decent places to play. Where I come from, there are local shows every night that bounce between a LOT of venues, but in Atlanta I've only found a few good ones. And of those, the Star Bar is the one where I feel in my element. Now, that element is a bar where you can smoke, is dark, and feels like it's still the 90s, so there you have it. I found this place because it is where Five Eight has been playing when they've been in town. If you don't know, they're a regional act from Athens who have been around for 20 years, and put on a terrific rock and roll show. But there are many other reasons to come here, from comedy to local shows to just plain need a bar. Drinks are relatively reasonably priced, and they have a couple of bars going so you shouldn't have to wait long. The clientele is attractive, but again, I come for too-loud-to-hear-anything rock, so I wouldn't come here to pick up someone. Interestingly, the place used to be a bank, and still has a vault! And there's something pretty cool in that vault. So, the next night you're in Little Five Points and you're looking for something to do with a relatively cheap cover, try the Star Bar, and get your own look inside the vault. And when you do, you'll be supporting local music in a cool place, and that is a good feeling. read more

Ok, so some might say I'm stuck in a rut, but I can't get enough of Tuesday late night at the Star Bar. Quasi, the first DJ of the night, drove up to Lake Allatoona to DJ my brother's rehearsal dinner because my mother said please. The next DJ up Romeo Cologne has been a staple in my life since Funkadelica at The Georgia Theatre in Athens back in 1994. You can't beat the mix of people on Tuesday night. Of course my mother says that I'll never find Mr. Right at 2:30am on a Tuesday, but I plan to prove her wrong. And there's plenty of Mr. Tonight's to keep ya busy. If you like old school funk, I would suggest very little clothing, closed-toe shoes and a nap, because things don't get started till midnight. read more

God I love this dirty, disgusting little place. It's a proper dive, but you get the bonus of a heavy event rotation as opposed to scary regulars in leather and overalls. There's an element of SoCo to it, that good ol' nasty hipster redneck thaaang. I'm into it. Anyway, apparently they have awesome bands here on the regular, but I really only ever show up for Monday Open Mic nights. I don't know if you know this, because no one does, but Atlanta actually has a pretty well-respected and quickly growing stand up comedy scene. You're welcome for that news. Mondays at Star Bar are where seasoned comics work out new material (which I know because they cannot seem to resist telling you DIRECTLY before doing the joke) and fledgling little baby birdy comics make everyone super uncomfortable by looking like they're about to barf on stage. It's a win-win if you leave your "giving a shit about human pain" at the door. Drinks are cheap, appropriately strong, and some of the comics are verging on making it for realz. For all you "I saw them when"-ers, get it in while the gettin's good. These guys are the real deal and I can't think of a better setting for abortion jokes, am I right? Eh? Eh? Ok. read more

I pretty much always have a good time at this dirty, smoke-filled, alcohol-fueled dive venue. The standup/karaoke combo on Monday nights is particularly interesting, as its known to be the "hardest room" for comics in the city and people doing karaoke afterward get F-in serious. Somehow there is ALWAYS one extremely drunk guy at the Star Bar. Not a "kinda drunk" guy, or a "pretty drunk" guy, but THAT GUY who is somehow still standing for two hours even though he has to stop and lean against something and put his head in his hands every few minutes... you're always waiting for him to vomit, but he never does. Magical. Tip: Don't wear anything you can't easily wash that "Star Bar" smell out of. read more

Dirty, smoky, and downright delightful. The Star Bar is the closest thing to a dedicated rockabilly bar that I can think of in Atlanta; any time there's a 'billy show I want to check out, it's inevitably here. The Star can also be lauded for the free shows it has several times a week. Karaoke on Mondays inevitably starts way late, but it's always a raucous good time (thanks, Rotknee!). You all know about the Elvis Vault by now, and I'll admit that it's one of my favorite tour guide bits to perform for visiting friends. The overall decor, however, is reminiscent of a nightclub from a David Lynch movie, and I mean that in the best possible way. When someone really rockin' is playing, the checkerboard tiled floor and red ambient lighting really add to the experience. Also, there's $1 Black Label beer after 1 a.m.! read more

Yeah, the Star Bar is an interesting place, filled with even more interesting folks! I've been there more times than I can remember, but there was this one night that was pretty interesting that I will tell you about right....now. So, it's Valentine's Day a few years ago and I am very much by choice alone (I ditched my obnoxious date after dinner.) My friend Julie called and asked me if I wanted to go to their annual Anti-Valentine's Day party. So we headed up there and danced until it got to a point where I had had enough of this old man following me around the floor, grinding his junk into my back (sometimes I thank God that I am ridiculously short.) We went downstairs to the other bar to escape and had a nice time chatting with some new friends about who knows what. We knew it was getting late when the tone upstairs had changed from dance party to very drunk folks singing sad Patsy Cline karaoke. So we decided it was time to stagger out. I decided to come out of my OTP shell last night and venture into the part of town known as Little Five Points to hang out at the Star Bar. Of course like most OTP dwellers, I felt a little uncomfortable initially in the area, because I have not yet become accustomed to all of the biker gangs who seem like tattooed vigilantes, sworn to uphold their own version of "street law." Kinda reminds me of that movie 'Sin City.' The interior of the Star Bar looks like it has been there for ages, but I later came to realize that the bar actually replaced the bank that once existed in the same building. That would probably explain why there was a vault inside the place with a thick iron door. Instead of the money that was once inside the vault, there was an Elvis Shrine which perfectly accomplished the probable hidden agenda of creeping me out. The rest of the interior is fairly small. The two bar areas inside the building are adjacent from one another on the left and right sides of the room if your facing the tiny stage. The staff at the star bar are indeed some of the most interesting individuals I have encountered. One of the guys looked like Jim Morrison in the later years of the Doors when he had a full beard and beer gut. The other bartender was also sporting a full mountain man beard, but the hat he was wearing implied that he was going for the coal miner/banjo player look. There were some pretty good bands showcasing there talent last night. The stage that the bands perform on is very small, so don't expect to see any of the guitarists get into his power stance at any point during the performance. Overall, the Star Bar had a unique atmosphere that provided me with a decent amount of entertainment for the night. It is on the outskirts of a shady part of town, but for some reason I felt pretty safe there. Maybe it was the vigilante biker gangs outside, who were scouting the streets like a predator, and eagerly anticipating the opportunity to bring their own brand of "street justice" to any criminals that may dwell in the shadows. read more

Maybe it was the music. I went with my sister and her boyfriend to Star Bar to see Royal Thunder and How I Became the Bomb (cool name, I know). Royal Thunder, with their stuffed ram and goth-looking candles on stage, actually got my stiff hips swaying. (I don't have arthritis; I just can't dance.) Perhaps the cheap Cabernet Sauvignon also had something to do with it. Even though there were various devices broken in the bathroom, I am willing to overlook the dilapidation. THAT'S how much fun I had. The bartenders were friendly, the music was great, and the company was even better. read more

When emo kids pretend to be punk this is where they hang out. Seriously though, the place was pretty disappointing. I listen to all types of music, so I'm not complaining because of the style of music. First of all, I got this look from everyone as though I shouldn't be there. But seriously, what were those little twerps going to do about it? Second, the drink selection was pretty weak (that's important to me). And there was a cover charge, even though the band was not worth the money. I'm all about hole in the wall places that cater to certain crowds, nothing wrong with that. This review is specifically for DJ ROMEO COLOGNE and the Tuesday funk night. I could honestly care less about any other night at Star Bar. With a name like that, you KNOW he's funky. This man is brilliant on the turn tables. I dance the entire time, (taking breaks for drinks of course) and with enthusiasm. There's Stevie, Jackson 5....maybe disco shit thrown in....by the end of the night I am covered in sweat. And when you need a break from the dancefloor there's another bar downstairs with different music and an outdoor patio for smoke breaks. I have woken up many times the next morning with mystery bruises and sore muscles. I miss this night more than anything else in ATL. And I'm never going to find an apt replacement. read more

I would say that we need more places like Star Bar in Atlanta, but then that would be impossible. It can't be duplicated, replicated, imitated, or even explicated.... If you've never been, start with a Tuesday night and get your funk on...or just cruise their schedule on the web and pick a band out that sounds interesting. Hell, pick out one that sounds horrible and you'll still have an entertaining time. Cheap beer, good times, and it makes no apologies for being a smoky dive that showcases unique live acts.
