So disappointed in my meal today. I am an out of towner and have been here once before to celebrate my aunt's surprise birthday before she passed away in 2022. Unfortuneately I did not enjoy my experience. Prices were was overpriced for the quality of food. My fried shrimp had no seasoning and it was not even browned. Looked like someone just used a cheap cornmeal batter with no flavor. Baked potato was plain and dry. Salad was an iceberg style (no green leaf lettuce or spinach). There's something about a restaurant with a quiet kitchen, absent aromas and diners on a Saturday night in a popular area that made me leery. What made me leave aside from poor service? The absolutely INSANE prices!!!! My guy and I were handed menus that were written over in pen with the most ridiculous prices ever!!!!! no words needed. We looked at each other and got up and left. If they are going out of business, they need to just throw the towel in, because overcharging people, not having professional waitstaff on hand, and the mystery of the quiet kitchen (which happened to be in the middle of the place and semi-open) was effing weird. After lucking out on a rainy Father's Day fishing trip, we decided to get a consolation seafood meal. JP's photos look good so we went for it. We were the first customers through the door at 11am. Service was very friendly and we were seated with a nice view of the water. Being up at 4am we were starving so we went with the broiled combo for two. This came with lobster tails, fish, scallop, shrimp and baked clams. The clams were amazing. The set ran for 165$. It was a lot more food than anticipated. So after many years of frequenting JP's Restaurant, I have to say that this afternoon was the last time. I had a birthday Luncheon for my spouse and the bill was over $1100. Fine. We ate and drank and enjoyed the meal. The waitress was informed earlier that some would pay via Zelle, and some cash, since this restaurant no longer accepts credit cards! Thats another issue entirely to itself. However, this waitress added meals onto the bill that were already paid through Zelle, and when we attempted to explain her mistake, her attitude and response was totally unacceptable. We paid the entire bill to the manager (JP) including the gratuity, and proceeded outside to the parking lot to say our goodbyes and take some group photos. Next thing we know, some other waitress comes running outside saying we owe more money! Whatttt! So it seems, this waitress of ours told the manager that we had underpaid and had not given any gratuity. That pissed me off! I personally walked back inside to straighten this out. It became a mini fiasco and to be honest, it truly hurt my feelings that JP did not even want to listen to what I was saying. This is the short version. It was obvious that this waitress was taking advantage of JP because he gave her another $100. He was too intoxicated to even see what she was doing....and he was not listening to me. I was patronizing this establishment when no one was coming there. The Lobster House always gets all the customers, but I stayed loyal. I've always "over tipped" the wait staff, but I guess being a loyal customer means nothing at this restaurant. Well they won't get another dime. Service was good, Ambiance ok. I was very much disappointed with the food. For a place that boast about seafood authenticity, I was disappointed with my crab stuff flounder meal. While it was plentiful, the crab stuffing was approx. 99% bread stuffing. The crabmeat was non-existent. If you are going to charge such exorbitant prices, I do not mind paying as long as you are going to serve real seafood. The bill was hand written on a regular store numbered checkbook not even presented on a modern computerized print bill. The bill payment is all cash/zelle...go figure! My visit here happened early Dec 2025. Everyone should be sure and read the huge sign on the entrance door to the restaurant. It explains things clearly. And they did not lie. An entree could easily feed 2-3 hungry people with leftovers, if you add in the salad, bread and drinks before the meal. Maybe 4, so yeah, everybody needs to be good and starved out! I've been to this restaurant a few years back but wanted to check it out again on a Friday night. We were welcomed by the owner who was very attentive and nice. Our waitress came to us very quickly and took our drink order. The menu has a lot of options so you may need to time to order but the food was worth every penny. Had the pleasure of visiting this place again for my birthday today. Very very great food. I must say the food was great. I tried something new today which was the fried scallops and the fried lobster tail and the fried shrimp which came with yellow rice and a salad. My partner had flounder with linguine with red sauce. The food was wonderful. The waitress was great too. The lady name is Maddie. Mr. John the owner treated us very well and took great care of us. The ambiance is always amazing. Okay of all the years I've done City Island I have somehow missed this Gem which was on point the staff and owner John were super attentive (in part due to my friend being a regular). The portions were more than enuff and the cocktails were nice and strong. And sadly due to great convo a couple of drinks in didn't gets pics of my seafood platter shared with my girl pal. Sonny's Broiled Combo For 2 Shrimps, flounder, scallops, baked clams, and 2 large lobster tails served with a potato (for me) and rice (for my girl) 2 salads and peas (which the menu as a whole could do without). Where do I begin? Let's start with the main reason for my couple of visits, the view. This is one of the few places with an outside seating area with close up water views. JP's has been around longer than some of us were even considered a thought and has a large customer following despite the prices. I'll get to the prices in a sec. When you walk in its like you're stepping back into time, as this place is stuck in a time warp. 50s music playing in the background, random oldey-type chotskies littered throughout the place. Their mantra should be, if it ain't broke don't fix it and if it is broke don't fix it. No modern day upgrades happening here. The food. Big thumbs up for their Garlic Bread. This and a cocktail just sitting outside watching the water and the crows nest is more than enough for me. Carbs + Alcohol + View for the win! But to get the Garlic Bread you have to order a main. There were no Crab Cakes on the menu, so I opted for the Fried Clam Belly app. You don't see Clam Bellies on a CI menu ever, so that seemed a decent choice, size and price wise. The bellies were a portion of 12, with a thick, tasty batter. Accompanying it was a good tasting Tartar Sauce and wedge of Lemon to cut the fat. All and all it was a satisfying app, but after several bites became redundant. Not totally disappointing but nothing to really squeal or should I say yelp about. :) The prices here are exorbitant. I balked from sticker shock, but the surrounding tables seemed on board with the prices. The orders that passed us were extremely large. Like take home and feed your family again until they're full large. I can see the appeal but can't comment on the flavors. Would I come back again? Most certainly! For the view, garlic bread, a drink and maybe 6 Clam Bellies instead of 12. Four Star Tip: Servers were swift, friendly and professional. read more

Did not eat here but from first impressions alone- I would never. Firstly, I get it that parking is solely for the patrons of the establishment- noted. My family and I however, did not initially know this, were undecided about where to eat and parked here. Not 5 seconds after I parked we were stopped and told by someone also parking: "my man's, if you're not eating here, you can't park here" and "I'm just giving you fair warning". This man was apparently "part owner of this establishment" so hey, understood but sir, if you read this, as the owner of the vehicle you stated would be towed the BETTER way to obtain business would be to say "hey, your car can be towed if you park here and you're not dining here BUT why don't you all come in and see our menu before heading out". THIS is how you gain and keep loyal customers. Telling you we're undecided on where to eat, you could have easily made $$ with this attitude as we were a very large party. From his attitude and negative stance alone, I quickly drove my car out and looked for somewhere else to eat. Sad and hopefully a lesson learned. I can see why the parking lot was empty. read more

The menu warns you that this aint no cheap thrill so be prepared to roll them dollars out. the staff is attentive, the restaurant is low maintenance so don't come expecting it to be a 5 star ambiance. I visited this restaurant years ago and wasn't impressed with the food and/or prices. LOL. Granted I am not a seafood eater so I cant comment on their specialty. Some coworkers and I recently visited this spot to celebrate a colleagues retirement and we had a a great time. The staff were amazing and went above and beyond to accommodate our large group. I was very pleased with how attentive the staff was towards our loud azz group. The restaurant could definitely use some tender love and care in the overall appearance especially in the back area going towards the bathroom. The water pressure in the bathrooms wasn't the greatest. However, since we're still in COVID life, you have to be mindful that a lot of restaurants took some big losses and continue to support. The views are still beautiful and we saw people jet skiing and canoeing while we ate. Now to the food, I was much more satisfied with my meal that had some flavor and I enjoyed my leftovers even more at home that night. LOL I ordered the chicken parmigiana with linguine. No one in our party complained about their food and there were several dishes. We were given complimentary stuffed clams and oysters that everyone loved. I tried both and surprisingly liked the clams. Honestly, I think our group enjoyed the expensive azz drinks here more than anything else because everyone got louder, laughed more and we couldn't even take advantage of the complimentary bottles of champagne they offered. The majority of the group had rounds of Hennessy coladas and that killer strong island iced tea. Honey, I took a sip of a friends colada and immediately went back to my virgin daiquiri and water. Our freaking bill was half towards food and half towards drinks. LOL I would definitely recommend this restaurant for a large group dinner, it would've been nicer if the area for big groups was enclosed because we were getting stares from the other patrons due to the drunken laughter, LOL. When you go to JP's you get personalized attention by the owner who coordinates with the staff to provide the best service for his patrons. You don't see this kind of service anymore. The food is excelente. I had the crabmeat stuffed flounder. It's to die for. They give good portions. The frozen drinks are the best. There's private parking. I understand & know that seafood is expensive but my husband and I came here for a nightcap and with the idea of getting a few appetizers to share, before we walked in there was a sign saying to look at the menu first and now I understand why.... The prices are insane. Again, quality seafood costs money and I have no problem paying for it but the cheapest appetizer on the menu were mozzarella sticks and they were $18 dollars......... what is the reason for that.... It's not seafood. Every other appetizer was the same price as the entrees.... Make it make sense!?? I'll give it to them that the portions are very big but an appetizer shouldn't be the same size as an entree therefore it shouldn't be the same price either... The lights are so dim, you have to use flash to see the menu which isn't for me. The best thing about this experience was the complimentary garlic bread. It was delicious. Our waitress was also very sweet but I will never come back here. The menu has a quote on there that says "real quality seafood costs real money" something like that, which I think is super tacky too. It gets no stars- my mother and I went to the wrong restaurant. You could tell something was off by the greeting from a guy in a dirty oiled stain shirt to the only ones in the restaurant. We thought, maybe he was a cook and had a long day, until.... We asked him about a special- he returned with a penny saver and all I could notice was his dirty long fingernails not to mention the fact he rubbed his genitalia before walking away. We got bad vibes and stated to the waitress that we were in the wrong place, it was then confirmed how much of a wack job this guy was. He started saying that the shrimp we are eating is poison and just started talking about dog food and fake food at the neighboring restaurant, the one we were supposed to be at. Hard to know where to start.... Loved my Pina Colada and garlic bread, this isn't just good bread, it's special. Stuffed flounder, little clams with bacon bits, scallops, pasta calamari, jumbo shrimp, lobster tails, oysters, and on and on, it was a feast. It all comes quickly too. All I can say is my food was good. I'd been to every restaurant in City Island and Jp's is still one of my favs. It reminds me of one of those type of hole-in-the-wall restaurants with banging food and drinks. JP's is one of my favorites on City Island. John the owner always makes me feel welcome and takes care of me and my guests when I come. The portions of food are very plentiful. I love the sangria. Only sangria that comes close as being as good as mine. Lol! I know people complain about the prices. Yes the food does cost but the amount you get is enough for 2 in 1 meal. People also complain the decor is dated. Looks dirty. I agree they should invest and upgrade/change some things but the ambiance is just a damn good time. Every time I come it's a blast. Excellent service to go along with fresh tasty seafood. I ordered the whole lobster and the fried shrimp and I received exactly what I was expecting. The lobster was broiled , seasoned and cooked perfectly (not rubbery) For my drink I ordered the Mai Tai everyone can't make a Mai Tai but JP's Mai Tai was a perfect blend. The owner and waitress super friendly. Went at 1 pm on a Monday. The place was empty and stayed that way for hours. Right before I left, two more couples came. The salad was stale and the crab stuffing for my lobster had no crab. All breading. And the place was filthy. From the seats, floor and even the windows.
