We grabbed 3 empanadas, but the worker told us to get 4 for a better deal, so we did. When I was paying, I was shocked at how pricey it was for 4 empanadas totaling $21.51. Even with this deal, it was still over $5 for each empanada and they were pretty small too. I had the Pork and Breakfast one, which were ok. I've had two experiences here and have really enjoyed both. My first was sharing a chicken empanada with a friend. It was extremely flavorful and a delicious experience, her kids loved it too! The second experience I ordered the breakfast empanada which with later thought it like a breakfast hot pocket. A very wet scrambled egg, cheese and bacon however this time I discovered they have sauces! I tried both the Red Gold and Green Gold, by far the Green Gold was my favorite (enough to buy a bag of it) I found the Green sauce brighter and more garlicky. Another friend of mine commenter they would prefer to have the dough be crisper and the more that I thought about it, I would have to agree. However I think the first time it was pretty crispy so it could be the day or a filling thing. I took a cinnamon sugar churro home, it was ok. I can't say the churro was anything more amazing that anything I've had in the past. However Juan and Maria have to have a lot of street cred based upon the crowd and I am one of them. Tried this place on a recent visit to the Rochester Public Market. It seems like it's been here forever! I have eaten here before, but it was a very long time ago. Juan & Maria's is located back near the new permanent building. It could use a facelift: maybe some fresh paint on the building and on the picnic tables. Stools at the high tops are a little wobbly. But that doesn't take away from the food! We recently sampled the breakfast empanadas. Very good! We added some of the Red Gold (?) sauce and it really spiced it up. I was actually pretty full for most of the day :) The only negative, and it isn't really a negative because we weren't in a hurry, is the wait. We ordered and probably waited 20 mins or more for the food. There weren't many people in line ahead of us. I'd go again for sure! read more

We also got a pineapple juice and Tropi-Cola. They have their own sauces and also sell them. We tried the green sauce. It is a little spicy, but brings the right amount of heat to the dish. Sorry, but this place isn't as glorious as you may have heard. 1.) the wait time to receive your food is a bit dramatic. I was waiting for about 25-30 mins just to eat. There were only a few other people ahead of me. 2.) probably most worth noting is that their rice is shameful. I've eaten so many different types of rice made by Latinos that I was appalled when I ate Juan and Maria's. Another reviewer posted the same thing. I didn't believe it when I read it but after I had my own I realized I had been warned. The rice did indeed taste like it was from out of a box. It was NOT warm, fluffy, and addicting. On the contrary, I couldn't even bring myself to finish it. I was very disappointed. I got the combo plate with rice, chicken, beans, and an empanada. 3.) Their one saving grace are their empanadas. Those ARE tasty however they come at a price. Yea, a real price, that's a bit on the high side. It's about $4 for just one empanada. Yes I believe that's high, but so far it hasn't stopped me from getting their empanadas. They can get away with charging that much I suppose. Haven't reviewed a place in the longest time, but went to Juan & Maria's today and it was incredible! The empanadas themselves were great, that goes without saying. But we ordered a side of beans and rice, that were phenomenal, some of the best I've ever had. And they had two sauces, one was a tomato garlic, and the other, I'm not exactly sure what it was, but it was green like a salsa verde.... If I could buy these bottled I would eat them everyday, on everything! Main guy working there was a cutie pie too, that never hurts! Juan & Maria's is the Juan & Only place I've been that tastes anything like this. According to statistics, Juan in ten Latin places are amazing, and this place belongs to that Elite 10%. Here, Juan can get Empanadas and many other delicacies that you will Juant to try. It's a Juanderfulplace. Oh wow, this is my 1666th review. Is that somehow devillish, or am I just on fire like the Great Fire Of London in Whitechapel, 1666. What to get: Rice, Beans & Pork Lunch, with Banana & Coconut and/or Tropical Mix homemade juice. What else is good: Chicken, Empanadas. The owner's favourite Celine Dion song is "My Heart Will Go Juan." It's a little stand at the Rochester Public Market, with cheap Latin food. But there is nothing little about the taste, nor the selection. This place is *incredible*, one of my favourite places in the 585. The prices, on the other hand, are very little. The owner's favourite concentration camp is "Juantanamo Bay." The food here is so delicious, so unique, so dreamy, and so, so, so unbelievably cheap. You can get sandwiches for under $5, lunch specials for 5 or 6 dollars that come with rice, beans and a meat, or for $10 you can get all three of those with an Empanada at dinner time. Empanadas by themselves are $4.50 which is a little steep. They're good, but they're not the star of the show. The pork is. The owner's favourite Chinese food is "Juan Ton." As are the homemade sauces. Yellow, green and red. Green is god's gift to sauces, but all three are delicious and worth trying. Different people will like different ones. You can get a small pot of each with any given order - I highly suggest you do so, and ask for extra green. The owner's favourite opening line of poetry is "I Juan-dered lonely as a cloud." As are the homemade juices, which delightfully will cost you under $2 per cup. Orange & Carrot-Milk, Banana & Coconut, and Tropical Mix. All three are delicious and very different from anything you've had before. But the Banana-Coconut is the one that really rocks my world, so if you only try that one, try it. It's heaven in a cup. Well no, that would be Xstina Aguilera in a cup, but this is close enough. The owner's third favourite movie is "Juan Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest." So you have good Empanadas, excellent rice and beans, good chicken, incredible sauteed juicy spiced pork, some of the tastiest and most innovative homemade sauces anywhere, and oh, let's not forget the homemade juices that are off-the-charts delicious. All this in one little stand in the Roach-infested Pubic Markup. The owner's second favourite movie is "A Fish Called Juan, Duh." Rochester has some really special ethnic food places, such as Abyssinia and Bombay Chaat, but none more special than Juan & Maria. I'd recommend trying all three, and plenty more, but if you decide to be Juan & Done (like the Bills on the rare occasion they make the Playoffs), then there aren't many better choices for your Juan than J&M. So if you need something quick and easy to take on your trek through the Public Market or elsewhere, Juan & Maria's is the ticket. I appreciate their consistency in committing to doing one thing, and doing it right. Their empanadas are hearty and filling. Personally, I prefer a flakier crust when I make my own empanadas, but the flavor in these is still good, albeit a little heartier in texture and consistency. As for the flavor combos, I like the breakfast empanada (eggs and meats like bacon & ham) and the beef/onions. I must eat each bite with their verde sauce, which is refreshing with the savory heart of the empanada and has just a hint of sweetness. They also have bigger options like rice & beans with eggs/chicken/or pork. On to the juice -- go for it! Fresh juices are the perfect complement to a hearty breakfast meal. Their combos are delicious and have a bit of a zing to 'em. Not pulpy either so that's a plus. Options include tropical, orange-carrot (seems strange, but cuts the sweetness!), and banana-coconut for under $2! Go for broke and get a few to share if you're out and about with friends. If you order 4-6 you'll get a few bucks off your order. That way you can share and sample more too. They're about $4 and big. But I'd prefer a slightly smaller empanada so I can get 2 or 3 and sample different flavor combos for about the same price. Won't stop me though. Also, they accept credit cards. On a beautiful day, this Public Market empanada hut brings me back to my vacation in Puerto Rico. The filling we got was beef and onions, and there was not much beef flavor. It was all very meh. At $5 (well $4 and some change), I would have rather had a breakfast sandwich from Scotts. The juice was yummy and delicious but SUPER SMALL! It was in a small small coffee cup. I was expecting at least a medium coffee cup... come on! My favorite memories of Rochester? One has to include walking to the Public Market on a Saturday morning for some breakfast burritos at Juan and Maria's Empanada Stop. I actually used to have a friend who worked here, and one day he brought my roomie and I some samples. They were pretty tasty! Months later, when Juan and Maria were offering a buy-one and get one for a penny deal, I knew that I had to visit again. Juan and Maria offer delicious and filling empanadas in a few varieties: beef and onion, chicken, seafood, a few breakfast options, et cetera. Their rice and beans are also very very good. One empanada and a plate of the rice and beans makes a delicious and filling meal. I also like that the empanadas aren't greasy. While I do enjoy the food here, I think that three dollars and change for ONE empanada is extremely expensive. They really need to work on lowering their prices. Juan and Maria are very cordial and nice people. They are often at the stand on Saturdays working with their staff and greeting the customers. Juan often hands out juice or other samples. If you say, "I've never tried...," I've seen him selflessly offer up a sample. So while I do find Juan and Maria's expensive, I consider it a Rochester comfort food that I can't do without. A necessary luxury that a trip to the Public Market would feel incomplete without! This is a great place to stay warm in the winter months at the Public Market. It's usually really busy (sign of a good place) but it's small, so it's expected. The staff is friendly and efficient. If only the increase in price was matched with an increase in quality. I remember when I was younger, Juan and Maria's set up shop at the Public Market and introduced me to the mystical empanada. Crispy dough on the outside, delicious hot filling inside, it was the perfect treat while navigating the aisles and aisles of fresh fruits and veggies. When they first started, $2.50 per empanada was quite the bargain. Fast forward about nine years and Juan and Maria's has blown up: massive lines, multiple catering options, a frozen empanada brand, they did it! Unfortunately though, their prices have almost doubled since their start and the product itself hasn't changed too much. Over holiday break, I took a trip down memory lane and indulged in a beef empanada. Unfortunately, it didn't meet the expectations I had from my memories. The flavors were fairly flat and the only sensation I was getting was "salty." The edges were overcooked and more hard than crispy.
