I've gone here for years, but finally had it today. When I called for the appointment I confirmed the stylist's price ($45), but was charged $60. When I asked for clarification, as the website listed $45, I was told both that the website was under construction and that the prices were "subject to change." No apology for the confusion. Not a single ounce of effort put into giving me a reason to ever return. Mind you, I was the only customer there at the time, and my haircut only took 10 minutes. There are other salons in the area with a friendly staff and transparent pricing, so please go to those instead. Edit: I just got a call from the salon owner. Me: short and fine but thick hair, highlighted, *very* picky about my cut and color I have been here three times, and they were all good experiences. I started out with Danielle, who gave me fantastically cute A-line bobs that grew out beautifully. Last time I called I was told Danielle had moved away (though she's back now), so I booked with Carmi based on the reviews here. Carmi was GREAT! She listened carefully to what I wanted and really took time to make sure she understood. Then she was super nice to talk to and shared lots of funny stories that had me laughing, and she was ultra careful and patient applying the foils, even though it took forever with all my hair. She did three different highlight colors (more than I've ever had before), and it looks unbelievably natural! She followed that up with a fabulous cut that I am thrilled with. I highly recommend Carmi! My highlight was $140 and the cut was $50, a great deal for a 3+ hour service in the Harvard area! read more

Feri is spectacular. Truly an artist. I've been to a lot of different stylists all over this country and not one of them could compare to the masterpiece that this woman puts onto my head. Today I actually came in to have my last haircut done on Newbury St.....fixed...from two weeks ago. I work in the area, and it was convenient for me to drop in and get a quick haircut before a wedding, and I thought that because it was Newbury St that I would not be disappointed. Big fail. Never again. One of the best things about Feri cutting my hair is that she somehow manages to get it to look awesome for MONTHS after it's cut. It continues to morph into new do's that rock. I've been going to Judy Jetson for six years and I have never left that place with a bad haircut. Or even a haircut that I felt "wasn't for me." I am deeply loyal to Linda, and you should definitely let this awesome lady cut your hair. She specializes in short cuts, but she'll do whatever you want (and well!). Not to mention she's a total sweetie. Something I really appreciate about Linda (can't speak for the rest of the staff) is that she's super honest. If I go in and say I want my hair cut a certain way, she'll tell me if it will work or not (I have a lot of cowlicks). If it won't, she'll suggest a variation of that style and make it work. Finally got around to reviewing because the other day Linda hooked me up with the best haircut I think I've ever had. I've been going to Judy Jetson for almost two years now, but I think the time has come to say, "It's not me, it's you, Judy." I don't give bad reviews based on one or even a few bad experiences. This is based on many visits. I first went to Feri for my super curly hair. I didn't want a lot of hair cut off, and what I got was a partial haircut, meaning some hair had been cut...some had not. It was misshappen, uneven, and didn't even look like i'd had a haircut. I was not impressed. But I kept hearing such great things about the stylists there, I decided to wait a while and try someone else. On my second try, the receptionist recommended Nicole for curly hair. I've been going to her for over a year and the first time went great. She listened to the fact that I did not want thinning shears used AT ALL, she cut a lot of hair off, which is what I wanted, and the shape was good. I even got a call from Judy the next day asking for feedback. Nice! However, over the past year, the thinning shears have worked their way more and more into the picture. Any time someone uses these on my hair, it creates TONS of frizz a day or so later and makes future cuts more extreme (meaning more hair needs to be taken off than if thinning shears were not used previously...meaning it takes WAY longer to grow your hair out). I would be talking to her or listening to her stories and suddenly realize that she had thinning shears in her hand and that she'd been using them for a while. Once half your head is thinned, you can't exactly not do the other side, so the damage is already done. I would say each time that I didn't want them used, but they would be used anyway. I only get my hair cut every 3-4 months and usually the shears were only used on the last inch or so, so I managed to work with it...until a month ago. She really went to town with them and my whole head was nothing but frizz. After only a month since seeing Nicole last, no matter how much leave-in conditioner I used...it was ALL FRIZZ. I started researching other stylists and found one I wanted to see, but she is on vacation for the next few weeks. In desperation, I called Nicole after a particularly uncooperative hair day. She happened to have a next-day, Saturday, appointment. I thought if I were very specific, she'd be able to give me something I could work with for a month. I said I felt that that the thinning shears were the reason I had this much frizz and that I wanted 3 inches cut off. I also said that I didn't like the current shape she had given me last time. I was very specific in describing what I wanted, which is basically what she gave me the first time I saw her. I could feel her defensiveness kicking in. She told me that what I wanted wasn't possible (I described something SHE gave me previously) and that she'd have to shave my head to get rid of all the frizz (not true). The whole experience was very tense. The way she was talking to me was all attitude. I decided that ANY haircut was better than NO haircut at this point as I couldn't deal with all this frizz. She only cut about an inch off and gave me the same poodle-like mullet I'd walked in with (that I said I didn't want). The final straw was when she started raising her voice when I said that I had wanted it shorter and that this shape wasn't what I'd asked for. At that point, I just wanted to leave. Then, I was commenting on the shape, and she misunderstood it as a question. Her response was, "Do I like it????? OF COURSE I LIKE IT!! I DID IT!! DUHH!!!!!" It was so inappropriate. Nicole, I didn't ask you if YOU liked it. It's more important that I like it, which I don't!!! DUHH!!!! I tried to explain this to you in person, but since you didn't care to listen then, I felt the need to write this review publicly so others wouldn't fall victim to your attitude. Maybe you were having a bad day, but that always seems to be the case when I see you. What I do know is that you don't know what's best for my hair and you really need to consider your clients' needs/requests before you start cutting. Best haircut I've ever gotten. I found Judy Jetson as listed as being a good stop for LGBTq people on Autostraddle, so I headed over to Yelp. I saw that there were many different stylists who were loved by others, so figured why not just call and see who the receptionist recommended for my curly, ultra-thick hair. The receptionist was great, asked about my hair and what I was looking for, and set me up for an appointment that day with Carmi. And wow, what an experience! So queer friendly outside and in, very friendly reception. Carmi really listened to what I was asking for, and asked really thoughtful questions about my hairstyle and preferences. I've never felt so listened to by a hairstylist before, and I've tried quite a few places around Boston. End result: exactly what I've been wanting, but had trouble achieving, with other hairstylists. She nailed it- I looked exactly how I wanted, but somehow better. Conversation was easy and really fun- and I usually don't mind being quiet in those settings. At the end, she really checked in to make sure it was what I wanted (it was!) and gave me style tips. I will be back, absolutely. 100% recommend. read more

I have to agree with the other customers who gave a low rating... the staff is extremely rude. I had walked in to make an appointment for a cut and dry and as I was talking to the (very dull) woman at the desk a guy who works there came up and said: "are you gonna get your hair cut?" My response was: "yes, I also need to get it blow dried" His nasty response was: "Honey, with that hair, I don't think any of us have the time or patience to get it straight." !!?? What?! So here's the thing...great location...BUT my problem is THEY ALL TALK BADLY ABOUT EACH OTHER!! It seems none of the stylists even like each other!! They are cold to one another and not helpful..and they decide to tell me, a client, bad things about their colleagues...not cool. I did get some moderately decent cuts there. but nothing that made me feel great or like I was committed...and I tried several stylist for different reasons. Judy, you need to do some team building or professional development to teach your stylist how to be fully professional to represent your business.I know you have been in business for a long time and may not need my business but...it would be so worth it to lay down some guidelines and build your team to work as a team. I used to go to this shop in college. I went to a nice gay guy who was so sweet and gave me the best cuts. I stopped in one day to see if he was around for a cut and was told he was no longer an employee. I (stupidly) agreed to have someone else cut my hair. She did not do at all what I wanted, in fact she made me look like my 50 year old stepmother w/ a short super poofy cut and TINY- super short bangs (she had suggested bangs- but did not say they would be a little over an inch long and I assumed they would be longer since she knew I was trying to grow out my hair- all of it). I went in with chin length hair (and no bangs) that I told her I was growing out but wanted more volume style b/c it was getting flat. During the cutting I reminded her that I was intending to grow my hair out and to please not make it too short- she did not listen. I literally left, walked outside and started crying on the corner before I made it to my car. The next morning I walked to the barber shop on the next corner and had the guy buzz my head- It was literally that bad- I had no other option. Judy Jetson, while providing haircuts I would deem "decent", is straight out of a bygone era- an era called the 90s, when hipsters thought it was cool to be rude to customers and not tolerating that rudeness from a hair salon was known as "having a behavior." Truthfully I don't know how this place stays in business, and they have gotten considerably worse and far ruder in recent years. Honestly, Judy, I could tell today that nothing's changed since the first time I met you several years ago. This is not a compliment. After that first meeting I knew I never would get my hair done there, I did however come in a few times to buy a conditioner I love that I couldn't find elsewhere.I'm sad that you no lOnger carry it, but at least I don't have to go back thro those doors anymore! This place always gave me the creeps. It seems a little too big for its Retro-goth-indie-glam-Hanna-Barbera britches. Its a decent space. My hairstylist was super nice and chatty. But it just wasn't spectacular. For once I knew exactly what I wanted. But I still didn't get it. I had that weird feeling akin to "insulting the chef"..(when she didn't do what I had asked for with my bang-age). plus she kept asking me to stare in tthe mirror and tell her if I like her cutting style-so I paid the $48 and got the hell out of there. The back and sides of my hair were cut nice...but the bangs were too deliberate and choppy for me. After asking my boyfriend (without success) to do it for me, 'It' being cut my hair. I gave up and went to Super Cuts, in Twin city Plaza for them to do the no brainer deed. $8.95 later I had reached my goal. read more

I went in to see Carmi today for a single process hair color. I had seen Carmi before for highlights and was not very pleased with her last job - she didn't do the roots all the way (and at points she did the highlights in different hair lengths so it looked very off) and her highlights didn't look professional. I decided to give her the benefit of the doubt and return to get a single process color today. When I sat in the chair, she explained how she couldn't do what I wanted because my hair had different colors in it and she would have to bleach the bottom to get a single color. She was very rude and aggressive explaining this to me. I finally told her that I wanted to think out loud with her, that I wanted this this and this, and I asked her about the best way to get an even tone without bleaching the bottom. Then JUDY (the manager) comes and, even more aggressively, starts telling me how damaged my hair is, how she would NEVER bleach it (contrary to what Carmi wanted to do), how I didn't look anything like Julia Roberts (I had shown them a picture of her hair to demonstrate the color family I wanted), and - when I was touching my hair - to stop touching it (with exclamation marks) - all very aggressively. I was VERY taken aback - I am not the type to fight or get into a confrontation - especially since I'm paying these people to treat my hair. The service here was horrendous. They were beyond rude, aggressive, and mean. I've never had such a bad experience with a salon, especially since they advertise themselves as a high-quality salon. I would not recommend going here for a color treatment or any hair treatment. In my experience, they don't know what they are doing and will never give you what you want without a fight. I am so sorry to be giving such a review. I had wished to leave the salon happy since I will be traveling and getting married soon. I had one of the worst experience my hair has ever had at Judy Jetson's with Feri a few weeks ago. I have sensitive curly hair and was told that Feri was the go-to person in town. Well, despite me asking for a dry cut (when they cut your hair dry with the curl pattern intact in order to better tell how things will look when it's dry- a standard curly practice) when I made the appointment, when I showed up for the appointment, and when I was in the chair, Feri insisted on soaking and conditioning my hair. When I first sat down in the salon chair, she immediately stated combing out my hair, something I never do because of the breakage and the complete breakdown of my curls into a frizzy mess. She insisted, also, in cutting my hair like one would cut straight hair, which makes no sense. I told her I'd been cutting my own hair for the past few years and was looking to try something different, after which she kept making disparaging remarks about the job I'd done (which I'd been really happy with). After me repeatedly telling her I was unhappy after she cut it, she dampened my hair, had me put in more product (on top of the tons she had already put in) and sat me under a dryer. Needless to say, I left with a crunchy frizzy mass and it took over a week for my curls to recover. Even now, my hair basically looks like a mullet because of how different parts of my hair curl differently (which, again, is why you always dry cut curly hair!) Never again! read more

I went in there yesterday asking about adding curls to my hair and growing it out, and came out with a shag/dyke hair cut that even the Indigo Girls would sneer at. David did NOT listen to anything I said, and gave me fing bangs. I hate it. Sure, it may be "funky" but poofy bowl cuts don't do my style. I'm a relatively good communicator, but he started cutting from the back, leaving me no room to say anything about the length. HELL. To. The. NO!! After glowing reviews from a co-worker, I sent a dear friend here to get her hair styled for her wedding. The stylist listened to her during the test run, but on her wedding day, repeatedly kept saying that she only listened to the client "sometimes," and that she felt like doing it another way. My friend, the most low key bride ever, attempted to protest, but the stylist gave her a style that was several decades past what she was asking. She wanted 20s/30s era hair, and ended up looking like an extra from Mad Men. She still looked stunning, but when being charged over $100, the stylist needs to do what you agreed upon. Her stylist's name was Feri, btw. The worst part was the rest of the staff. We stood at the front desk for a good ten minutes, waiting for the receptionist to acknowledge our presence, perhaps ask us if we needed help. She couldn't be torn from her conversation about whatever banal thing she thought was more important than doing her actual job, so we decided it was time to walk past her to the back. We were met with disdainful looks from a crotchety woman whose hair looked as though she had just left prison, all greased back into a sad ponytail. Apparently, this is the owner. Anyway, we were told that we weren't allowed to be back there and were banished to the waiting area. The stylist took a full 40 minutes longer than she'd estimated, which would normally be a minor annoyance, but you should probably keep time in mind when you're styling someone's hair on their flippin' wedding day. Seriously. Between the nasty staff and the rogue stylists, I would recommend that anyone in their right mind steer clear of this place. read more

I usually get a cut and a balayage. She always makes it look so natural and picks the right color that blends into your hair. I had heard good things about Judy Jetson and decided to try it out. I learned quickly that the staff here is more interested in talking to each other than listening to what you want. I was extremely disappointed with my hair cut. Every time I tried to say something or remind the stylist of what I wanted, I was given hostile looks for interrupting her conversation. The haircut was nothing like I wanted -- it was a shaggy replica of the cut she had given the woman who had her hair cut before me. I had to have a "corrective" cut at another salon after this cut because they stylist had thinned out my hair (and I do not have thick hair.) Needless to say, I will not be headed back to Judy Jetson. read more

The owner is extremely rude and unprofessional! I walked in to see if they could trim the buzzed section of my head and they wanted to charge me for a hair cut, which is $40. I said no thank you because I could have the salon I normally go it touch it up for free, kinda like a bang trim. I would be happy to pay them and tip generously but a touch up buzzing job of a two inch section of my head is not worth $40! The owner laughed in my face and made all sorts of rude comments. Generally extremely unpleasant. I used to purchase my overpriced shampoo there for $25 a pop but I will never again enter that door. I just moved here from California as a single guy starting a new job and wanted to get a new hair cut to start things off right. I had very high hopes since Judy Jetson is right across the street from my house. Danielle cut my hair and she was very nice the whole time but unfortunately she really did an awful job on my haircut . I came in with long curly hair. I said that I didn't want to go too short, wanted to keep some of my curls but to clean up for a slightly more professional look. Half way through the haircut she pulled a piece of hair from the top of my head that had dried before the rest, said "what is that piece doing?" and without a second thought alfalfa'd me. She panicked and started cutting around the area saying "I guess we are going shorter haha". She continued to laugh nervously as she said things like "well your hair is both straight and curly, what am I supposed to do?" and "I guess we are going a little shorter than we planned". As I paid and walked out she said "hair product will be your best friend for a while, sorry about that". I tried to be very zen about it and even left her a tip. I figured it wasn't really that bad and I would be okay with it after a few days. A few days later, after buying hair gel and trying to find a hair style that didn't stick straight up on the top of my head (and only the very top), I went back in to ask for a refund or at least for a haircut from somebody else. They were apologetic and said that someone would call me back, which never happened and I am stuck with a bad haircut and with 65 dollars less to my name. read more

I had heard a couple good things about this place, I live pretty close, and I drive by here regularly. It always looked pretty cool from the outside. I'll preface this by saying I am EXTREMELY particular about my hair, to the point that for the last 3 years I have traveled home to NH to my one girl to get my hair even trimmed. However, I heard good reviews. First off, I called the place and asked for Maureen, who is the newest (and cheapest) stylist. Her quote, on their website, is $40 for a cut. So I walk in, and the receptionist is not at all polite or personable. Which, ha ha, after reading the other reviews here, seems on par with what others have experienced. Not a smile or more than two words to me. Maureen comes over and calls me. I sit down in the chair. I explained that I wanted a VERY SLIGHT TRIM. I have been trying to grow my hair out for YEARS, and my hair grows very slowly. I told her I don't want layers, I don't want it angled, I just want a trim and for her to take as little as possible off. I will say, to my discredit, it's been far too long since I had a trim, so there was some breakage and split ends - nothing crazy. The girl hacks off two and a half inches, puts in CRAZY layers, and angles my hair. I could have cried. When she was done, she said, "There, now you can just wait 3 months and come back, and we'll only need to cut an inch off next time." Now, I'm not an expert, but I do know that hair grows about a quarter inch a month. So if I have 3/4" of growth, I come back, and she cuts off more than the growth I came in with, how is my hair ever supposed to get longer? Dead eyed receptionist charged me $50 (instead of the 40 it claimed on their site) and I was too upset to even argue. I paid, left, and will never go back again. read more

alas, overrated. some stylists are great, some are just awful. i had the misfortune of getting an awful one this weekend -- she didn't listen to me when I told her what I wanted, didn't TALK to me, and botched my hair. I felt like she hated me for some reason; maybe she's got a thing against blondes. Seconds upon completing my haircut, she started stylist her own hair, which made me think she was running late for a hot date, and I was the reason. For this, I could've gone to SuperCuts for a fraction of the expense. read more

I started getting my hair cut by Carmi at Judy Jetson almost a year ago, and I haven't gotten a bad cut since. She is fabulous, friendly, and always makes me look awesome. I get compliments about my haircut all the time, even when it's been six weeks since my last cut and it's time to go back. It's not exactly cheap, but it's in the same price range as every other salon in the area, so that doesn't bother me. I really wanted to like this place. I did. I had long layered hair, about 8 inches past my shoulders and I went to see Ilana. About the greeting, I want to chime in with others here that I was basically ignored at the front desk for a few minutes then shown to a chair in the back. I met Ilana and had a consult: I explained that I wanted to keep as much length as possible and just get my layers neatened up for more body. But I wanted to keep the length because my hair was long and healthy and it had taken me years to get it to a place I loved. We agreed no more than 2 inches of length would be taken off, then we would assess and see how it looked. I'll get to the point: because they were busy, they couldn't find a chair for Ilana to work on (apparently there were more important clients there than me) and I was moved twice during the haircut to different stations so other stylists could work. After the first snip in the back I looked at the floor and saw about 11 inches of hair. I actually said, "What the f**k are you doing?" and IIlana blithely replied she was cleaning up my hair, that my layers were uneven. I KNEW they were uneven; that's why I was there! When she finished, my hair was ABOVE my shoulders, closer to my ears. Then she had to work with another client and asked if I wanted my hair dried and styled. Isn't that standard? Seriously?! She had to work with another client so she had the shampoo kid dry my hair. Now I can see why she asked because he yanked and pulled and used so much molding stuff that I almost had a helmet. I almost felt like they had confused me with someone else and I got a revenge cut. Maybe this place is good for some people, but I'd never go back there again. It's going to take me years to get my hair back to where I wanted it. read more

I and others in my family have been going to Judy Jetson for over 20 years, and I've been meaning to write a review for a long time. Salon is 100% gay-friendly. Half the staff and a healthy percentage of the clientele are gay, and Judy could not be kinder or more supportive. We have shared many hugs and hilarious conversations over the years, and that's the same warmth with which she treats all her customers. She was a supporter long before it was the popular thing to be. One only has to spend two minutes there and look around to verify what I'm saying. Truly a safe and supportive place to be gay (or otherwise) and to get a stylish do to go with it. Also, I speak from long experience in stating that one is rarely made to wait more than a few minutes (in fact, I've often been taken early; it's an efficient operation), and that the front-desk staff are wonderful, ESPECIALLY Sharon. She has taken such kind care of me over the years, and treats everyone that way. What needs to be said above all is that Linda is an absolutely superior stylist, an artist with fungicidal comb and scissors who is in the business of helping people to look and feel their best while honoring (or helping them gingerly dare to reveal) their true selves. She can do conventional, alternative, and everything in between without blinking an eye. If you need a transformative haircut or if, like one young family member, you cut your own hair (on about half your head, but in patches) to more closely resemble a (mangy) cat, she will fix you up without humiliating you. And conversation with her is enormously enjoyable. She's half bartender/therapist and half wry observer of human nature with a great laugh. I'd say the haircuts are slightly better than average, and more expensive than average (especially for guys). If you're going to pay this much, might as well pay another $20-$30 or so and get the best in Boston. read more

Went for a curly blow dry which ended up with a hot iron being used to form the curls instead of the actual hairdryer. As soon as I stood outside my hair turned to frizz, the curls lasted all of 1 hour. Terrible value at $50 as opposed to the normal price of between $25-$30 elsewhere. I have mixed feelings about this place. Yes- it's a funky alternative and hip salon. Yes- the stylists cut a little more creatively then the lame generic/mainstream ones. On the other hand- it's pricey, probably just as steep as some Newbury St. Salons. I've also dealt with a few rude receptionists, which doesn't set good vibes. I'm a woman with short hair and have spent many years and many dollars looking for a stylist who can give me the cool, somewhat masculine look that I want, not a standard pixie cut or mom haircut. This salon was recommended to me as LGBT friendly and, true to the recommendation, they were finally able to give me the type of style I was looking for. Of all the stylists I've tried in 5 years in/near Boston, including at pricey/upmarket salons, David at Judy Jetson is the best I've found for me. As others have said on this page, he knows how to take the style you want and make sure it looks great with your face shape/hair type etc. He also pays extreme attention to detail, which is especially important with short hair. David's also fun to chat to and seems to know a lot about the technical details of cutting hair. The cuts I've had from him have been a huge confidence boost. It's true this place doesn't have that "pretending to be a spa" feel that you get at some pricey salons, and they can be somewhat brusque and no-nonsense about greeting you etc., but this is not a big problem because I also feel awkward sometimes when salon people are overly smiley and obsequious. Ultimately I come to a hair salon to get a good haircut, not to drink free coffee or iced water. I did see a stylist at Judy Jetson before David who gave me a couple of cuts that were solid, but not elevated to that level of being just right and really flattering. Glad I switched. read more
