I have been a client of Jul's since about 2004, before the Jul's Studios salon opened when she had a mini salon in the basement of her townhouse. From the moment I first met Juls, when I was about 14, I immediately felt welcomed, appreciated, and accepted. When I first met her I was much shyer, but she always knew how to make me feel comfortable and get me talking. Juls always recognized my gifts and made it a point to praise me and empower me. I love how she can always see the light in others and help them see it themselves. I always enjoyed talking to her and her employees, including her long time employee LaToya. This alone made me a regular client for many years! Juls clearly possesses a deep passion for hair care and styling. She is well educated, loves educating her clients & employees, and constantly expanding her knowledge. Juls and her employees taught me various ways in which to keep my hair healthy over the years. My hair grew much longer and healthier than ever before! I remember people, especially older women and young girls of color, often stopping me and asking me how my hair looks so long and healthy. I built so much trust with Jul's Studios to the point where I didn't want any other salon touching my hair! I mentioned earlier that Juls is constantly expanding her knowledge. On top of hair care & styling, she also has her on handbag line called Jul's Collections where she designs custom Italian Leather Handbags and also creates custom wigs under her Jul's Hair Collections line! This woman is living her dream and worth knowing - even if you are just getting a haircut. Her confidence is contagious and magnetic! She knows how to deliver a lasting and positive impression on my life as well as many others. Jul's Studios also occasionally offers workshops on how to take care of your hair that I have yet to attend! They cater to women, men and children. They also can do all types of hair, and can cater to a diverse clientele. I sent my daughter to get her hair Done, she usually goes once a month. I said it was ok to provide a trim and deep conditioner. I spoke with the owner and said just take a small amount off for her trim. When I picked my daughter up some girl who has never done my daughter's hair did it and chopped my daughters hair off. I asked how many inches she took off and she had the nerve to say just a "trim". I am beyond pissed that my wishes were not followed AND I specifically asked for her hair to be prepared a certain way and that was not honored. To add insult i was charged and exorbitant amount... I am not a pleased customer. My daughter has been coming her for a while now and this will probably decide is i will ever bring her back again. read more

I sadly did not have the best experience on my first and last visit to Jul's Montclair, NJ. I was in the market for a new hairdresser who caters to natural hair since my hairdresser (who only specialized in natural hair) moved to DC. I called Jul's Salon and was excited to learn they cater to natural hair. I was a Ju'ls regular when I had a perm way back when and since I loved the services they provided in Parlin, I figured why not call on my old trusted hair salon (ps- I used to take the hour+ long drive to Parlin. They were that good and worth it) Sadly the Montclair location doesn't have the same old Jul's touch at all. The staff was very self involved and did not perform the hair consolation prior to working on the hair (Jul's, you spoiled us lady). I went in for a color and trim and it went downhill from there. Malik (stylist) recommended a lift and I still cannot see a difference from when I walked in. As for the hair cut, he did not bother to wash my hair and blow it out prior to performing the cut. He just proceeded to cut my hair with the same straightened, kinky rooted hairstyle I walked in... I thought this might be a new way... but noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo, he was just too lazy. My hair is all over the place.. My 10 min morning hair routing is no more. I cannot wash & go neither can I wrap & go nor can I pin-curl or curl and go.. I have to tame my hair with pins and hair spray... really.............. :( I loathe my hair cut and I can hardly wait for it to grow out and make my trip to DC to see Elan, an amazing hair stylist. I'm sorry Malik, I tried to like the cut, I tried to make it work.. but I can't! It sure is a challenge getting a good salon catering to natural hair in NJ. Where can I get the same service Elan provided i.e. All her hair conditioning treatments and some color services incorporated the use of a hair steamer and her hair cuts were out of this world amazing and to top it off scalp massages. Styling done with very little heat. The blow out lasts nothing more than 10 minutes and to finish one swoop of the flat iron and you look like a million $$$. I was searching for a new hair salon and I found Jul's on Yelp. I read the other comments and decided to give it a try. I definitely had a great first impression. The consultation was great and so was customer service. Everyone seemed so friendly. I will have to update as I continue to go there to see if things continue to be fine. I think I really might like this place though. I was satisfied with my hair. A little on the expensive side though, but I'm hoping in the long run that it's worth it. read more

Went to Jul's today for a color change. While Jul's was not there, Toya and Nina performed a miraculous transformation. My hair went from boring to awesome! This place should be shut down!!!! I waited two hours to be serviced even though I had an appointment. I don't think Juls is a colorist as I asked for soft highlights but I got bright yellow patches instead. My husband said my hair looked burned and dalmatian like with the yellow patches. I paid $200 for the worst color and cut of my life. Now I have to spend more money to get it fixed. The salon is rundown and dirty. What a horrible experience. read more

How this location can stay in business is beyond me, pricing changes on a weekly basis. One day I pay $110, two weeks later it is $135 for the same exact service. The same service in NY is $60, however, I guess you need to pay for the owner to take her vacations and for sitting by the pool, which she brags about during small talk. read more
