This office has very attentive staff who are professional, friendly, and follow up with you very quickly. Dr. Chun works very efficiently; appointments don't feel necessarily rushed, but she works very quickly (sometimes too much - like flipping between options too quickly during my eye prescription exam). Dr. Chun wore a very heavy duty medical mask for a couple of my appointments and a cloth mask for others. It bothered me a little she didn't wear gloves during the exam. I'm sure she washed her hands and sanitized, but any other medical professional I've seen during COVID has worn gloves. She asked to see my current glasses at one point, held them with her bare hands, and then handed them back to me. Only when she saw me hesitate did she then think to sanitize the glasses. She upsold me on a high resolution image of the back of my eyes (the only part of the exam my insurance allows them to set the rate, which they set to be cheaper than the recommended amount. She told me most patients to get this image, and it's good to have a baseline), then showed me the photo and pointed out limited UV damage. I asked about how long UV damage might take someone to get to a concerning level, granted everyone's different, and she wouldn't really answer me, just saying "I'm just providing you with information about your eyes," then gave me a generic brochure, and asking if I wanted to pay for an even HIGHER resolution image. I declined. Staff was trying to convince me that it was a better deal to get glasses and contacts using my insurance (I would end up paying about $150-200 out of pocket), instead of using all of my benefits for contacts (I would pay $0 out of pocket, and can wait until my coverage resets in 2021 and only pay about $60 for the glasses). I think their office gets more money for glasses or something; she was trying to sell the point by saying how much I would save on the glasses by getting them now, which doesn't make sense because I would pay more out of pocket overall. Despite all that, of course it was my choice in the end and I was able to get just contacts for $0 out of pocket. I had trouble choosing my contacts, so I probably had about 5 follow-up appointments with Dr. Chun after trying several different brands, all without an additional cost. I also want to note that my husband and I went to two different eye doctors under the same insurance. We both got an eye exam and a half year's worth of contacts. I paid $60 out of pocket (for just the eye exam), and he paid over $180. I can't say for sure, but it seems his eye doctor is not allowing him to take full advantage of his insurance coverage, while Dr. Chun's office made sure I was. read more

Find an ophthalmologist that views, and values you as a client, not as a dollar sign. Consequently, this is what I've become and after nearly two decades of eye exams, glasses, and contact lenses, my family and I have chosen to no longer support this business. We moved nearly an hour away and still came to see Dr.Chun because we were loyal customers. The staff is nice when it comes to confirming an appointment and/or getting a sale out of you, but anything outside of that they're rude and curt. At first, I believed it to be a cultural difference, but then I realized they're all assimilated/Americanized. Apropos to nothing, in all the years I've been coming here, I've never seen any type of diversity, meaning no one of color has worked here. I don't have a problem with running a tight ship for your business, but there's a fine line between being structured and being borderline tyrannical with mini minions. I suspect this is why there's such a huge turnover rate because I've never seen the same employee past one year. My advice, treat your eye exam as transactional and don't let the fake customer service empty your pockets. If you don't find anything you like, or in your price range, you can request a copy of your prescription and use it elsewhere. You've paid for it either by cash or by your insurance, and legally they have to give it to you. read more

No, that is not true. Your staff call me 10 mins past my appointment. I told her that i will be in 15-20mins. I was never informed about your 15 mins policy. Or that you will not be able give me full appointment. I was told your schedule was full rest of week. Regardless, the way you handle this situation was inappropriate. You clearly were upset, you displayed your emotions in front of not only me but in front of your other patient and staff. Disclosing my personal information. My family use to be seen at Dr. Chun office and I actually thought they cared about families and the community--I found out that the healthy kids program dissolved and went under medical-cal. Dr.Chun decided she no longer want to serve to families who are participants of Medi-cal even if you're a paying participant due to medi-cal. They recently pulled out of their contract so that all families being seen by them would no longer be accepted. The best part is that I only knew because I called to make my son his 5yo appt--not even a courtesy notice, email, etc. I contacted VSP and they informed me that they were still in contract and were unable to discriminated but--here we are. Very disappointing. I also will note that many patients under the medi-cal plans are also paying families. Actually paying monthly bills. My premium was $600. May not be much monthly but I was asked to pay this upfront--So to be told our children aren't welcomed at this business because we are grouped into this field is really unfortunate. I understand the behind scenes frustrated that medi-cal as an entity may not be holding their end of the bargain, but to take services from paying families is awful. I know they aren't the only business (dental, dr offices, etc) are all deciding the best way to make the most amount of money to stay open is to deny services to families IN the community. There has to be another way! The fact that this is an office located in the mission district where many families are living at or below poverty level and they (Dr.Chun) personally made the decision to cut their contract (ending next week on the 20th) tells you that this office isn't about community or serving the family. Thanks June Chun and staff for the year(before my kids insurance dissolved) we were with you guys. Outside of this horrible decision, we did feel that this office was welcoming--but now I understand it was because I could pay fully for their services, frames etc. I will be opting to pay private insurance for my kids and get refunded for the payment made to Healthy Kids program since it's now under Medi-cal, solely because literally all offices are deciding families under this entity aren't worthy of health care--but I am deciding to not return to Dr. Chun. The way this entire situation was handled was extremely discriminatory. No care for the patient because if there was some thought of us, we would have been notified and given information on what our options were. I seriously am sad for families, unlike mine who don't have the privilege to pay for private insurance and will now be out of yet another office, in the community, to take their children to. I have been going here for about 3 years. This office is great for busy people--it's easy to schedule appointments, they respond to emails and calls very quickly, and you never have to wait to see the doctor. The customer service and the doctor's advice/expertise here is just unbeatable. They obviously really care about their patients. I have two warnings: 1) they force you to get a $20 photo (not covered by insurance) of your eyeball with every exam. I was told it's just to keep a record, but it seems like since the doctor is the one who wants the record, the office should eat the cost; and 2)they don't clearly explain to you your insurance benefits (I walked out being so confused about what I paid for vs. what the insurance paid for and if anything could have been done to reduce my out-of-pocket costs). read more

I have been to OD's from New Jersey to California. Aside from that, I had a nephew who was considered one of the best in Los Angeles. Coming to live in San Francisco I was lucky when my friend recommended Dr. Chun. Excellent staff, space, and doctor. Totally satisfied. And all of these services in a time of the pandemic. Came here to Dr. Chun 2 years ago based on Yelp reviews and location. She and her staff were nice, but that was just it (hence the 2 stars). I had VSP and needed my eyes checked since it had been several years. I spent almost $300 for an eye exam and glasses. They pushed polarization or transition lenses which was fine. What I didn't like was being told I had early signs of macular degeneration when I really don't have it. Two different doctors have confirmed that I don't have it - which really worried me. I have no family history of any vision issues aside from being near and farsighted. They also pushed me to get some health thing done where they swab the inside of my cheek and it's not covered by them, but my doctor will...only to find that they lost my DNA sample and my information...can you say identity theft???? Yeah, I would never come back here. read more

I've been going to Dr. Chun since I was in high school and can't think of anyone better! She is not only incredibly professional, knowledgeable and efficient, but very kind and personable. She tells you exactly what's improved or worsened with your vision and tells you what each test is for. When it comes to making appointments and picking out frames, Dr. Chun and her staff truly are the best and are very accommodating. They carry many different brands from Nine West and Ray Bans to Prada and Valentino, so there is something for every price point. The girls are really helpful and honest when it comes to picking out frames. I've had frames from Nine West and Prada and have always received compliments on them. I can't wait for my new Valentino's! Who says "guys don't make passes at girls with glasses" ? ;) If you are looking for an optometrist, Dr. Chun is the best, hands down. I woke up with something that seemed like a giant rock in my eye. It was painful and I was tearing up so much I had to mop the floor. I remember seeing Dr Chun's office as I live only a 1/2 mile away. I drove down (sometimes on the sidewalk) to her and Dr. Wu took me in immediately and said I must have gotten rid of the rock since It was no longer in my eye but there was a scratch on my cornea. She applied some drops and gave me three little boxes of drops to use at home. By the middle of the day, the pain was gone and no more tears. Dr Wu and the artistic Dr. Chun are very personable. This is the small, one owner, cozy, old fashioned family oriented place, not one of the bigger sterile conglomerates. Will I return? Dr. Chun is professional and thorough. After I told her about my worries and symptoms, she especially walked me through each issue and ensured that they were not problems for my eyes. Everyone at the clinic is also friendly. I picked out a great pair of glasses with the help from the front desk ladies. The only feedback I would give is to be a bit more transparent regarding each procedure and cost. I sometimes had to ask for clarifications on what each procedure was for and the cost for them (whether my insurance covered or not). Still I would highly recommend this place to other patients due to the professionalism and friendliness of the staff here. read more

My initial review was regarding just popping in to get a new nose pad for my glasses. I had never been there before and the service they provided was stellar. They kept myself and my spouse coming back for more. I was short on cash the last time we needed glasses and I ordered from one of those online stores - it was an awful experience. They screwed up one of the prescriptions, took weeks to get the new ones sent out and then sent them with the wrong frames. Plus you can't get a custom fitting with online ordering. Never again. We went to Dr. Chung's office again. Everyone is so enthusiastic and helpful and the doctor herself comes out to assist even though we get our prescriptions through Kaiser. They're wonderfully patient and I always recommend them to friends. read more

I recently moved to San Francisco from Santa Fe. As is the case with all transplants, I had to find a new everything: new grocery store, new library, and, as a guy who has had bad eyes all his life, a new optometrist. I was relieved to find Dr. Chun, not only because she had such great ratings, but because she was a five minute walk away. But after visiting her and her remarkable staff, I'd drive an hour to keep her. She is without a doubt the best optometrist I have ever had. After 20-plus years of wearing glasses, I decided I wanted to try contacts. From the moment I walked in, I felt right at home. Dr. Chun and her staff are warm and friendly, and they create a delightful atmosphere from the get-go. Dr. Chun had visited my old hometown a few years earlier, and we chatted merrily about the Santa Fe opera and New Mexican food. It felt like I had been their client for years. With my astigmatism, I had tried contacts a few years before, but didn't like the results. Dr. Chun assured me the technology had come a long way, and she was right! She read my prescription right, and worked with me through SEVERAL sets of contacts to make sure I could see clearly. I'm now seeing 20/20 out of one eye and 20/15 out of the other. I have never had an optometrist who worked so diligently to get it right. One of my favorite things about Dr. Chun -- aside from how great she treats me -- is how close she and her staff seem to be. She creates a warm and inviting office for everyone in it, whether they work for her or are her patients. I happened to see a couple of her staff members walking down the sidewalk the other day, and they both smiled and gave me a big hello by name. You can't fake kindness and enthusiasm like that. It's a credit to Dr. Chun that she hires and keeps such good folks. Best eye-doctor ever! Compared to the previous optometrist who saw me for 10 minutes and handed me a bad prescription, June is a super-hero. She explains everything in detail and makes sure she knows/you know exactly what is going on with your eyes! She also has the state of the art equipment. ONE or TWO...ONE or TWO...TWO or Three...TWO, THREE... She gave me many tests to make sure she knew everything about my eyes... Peripheral vision. Glaucoma. Eye muscle strength. Photographed the eye in detail/Angiogram (extra $ but worth it.) Refraction Test. A GEEK OR A LIBRARIAN She and her staff made sure I was happy with the frames I picked out. They also gave me an, "uh, no..." or "that's cute"..or "yeah, very chic"... Dr. Chun is funny, friendly, professional and extremely good at what she does. I don't know how many years the hub and I have been going to Dr. Chun, but I am going to guess about...15 years? Anyway, after yet another very thorough visit today I decided to leave her and her staff a five star review. I hate any kind of "appointment" but she and her staff are always so professional, helpful and kind that it's always a pleasure. Winnie is a hoot! That woman just BEAMS Love, Light and Happiness. Whether when she calls you to remind you of an appointment, or when she greets you as you walk in. There is just no way all of that happiness cannot rub off on everyone who walks through that door. EVERYONE is great. I just needed to acknowledge her Light. :-) They not only have a great selection of frames, but are really good at helping you choose the right ones. Small and cozy office. I used to go to a different eye care place. I visited Dr. Chun for the first time when they were closed and I had an urgent medical issue with watering, burning eyes with extreme light sensitivity. Her friendly staff fit me in on the same day. She diagnosed the issue and even called a local pharmacy in front of me to ensure they readied the medication I needed within the next 20 minutes. She saw me 2-3 times to follow up and I was really happy with my experience. I will be changing my eye doctor to Dr. Chun. read more

Dr. Chun is the best at what she does! She delivers and she has not failed me. Today I just picked up my pair of Tom Fords and I am absolutely in love with them. Her assistants were very helpful at helping me pick the right frames. They were also quick and I was able to pick them up after a week. I have gone to other optometrists where it took them over a month for pick up. Lastly, she is very up to date with what's "in". Actually the ones that I bought were matte colored and if you have recently watched the most recent movie, Transformers, I've got the same matte colored frame that one of the guy was wearing...not Mark Wahlberg...but the other guy...Stanley Tucci...anyways..you get my point. read more

I was referred here through my coworker recommendation and gave it a try. I want to WARN everyone reading this review based on my personal experience and feelings that this business has a very shady business practice. First off, I only came here for the intention of updating my contact lenses and get new prescription. They will use manipulation such as fear tactics to make you think you need to get your eyes diluted to check for problems. Most people that are young and healthy shouldn't be paying unnecessary expenses and were doing that to me. After I complained, they refunded my money. It doesn't end here. After I'm done with my exam, I tried leaving because I timed my meter so I don't get a ticket. Instead of letting me leave, they will try to pressure you to buy glasses and frames, which I did not want or need. After holding me pass my meter time that I paid, I return to my car to realize I got a ticket. This business will try to "milk" your insurance to squeeze as much money from you and your insurance. If you do choose to give your business, take my words into consideration when you're making decisions to purchase what you need vs what they think you need. I hate businesses with a passion that manipulate their customers and this is the reason I am going optometrist shopping. I'm not sure if this is common practice amongst businesses to do this. I'll definitely not come back. To add insult to injury, they will refuse to give you a copy of your prescription so you can buy it elsewhere. They think they can hold your prescription hostage so you feel like you're "forced" to buy your contact lenses here. Only after you ordered and paid them for your contact lenses, they release your prescription to you. Don't always believe the positive reviews this business gets, come here at your own cost. I have filed complaints in the past and I will not return period! read more

I'm one of those people that have to try on every pair that Dr. Chun carries, her staff is the best the girls put up with me. I have been going to see Dr. Chun for over 10 years and I get one to two pair of glasses per year. They have the best styles and brands. I just purchased two new pairs of glasses one for day and one pair of sunglasses by Shanghai Tang, Dr Chun is one of the few places in town that carries this brand. IT is to die for!!!! I also purchase sunglasses for my best friend that lives in San Jose every couple of years and she is always happy with my selection. read more

I came here to get my craptastic eyes checked for the year, and dragged along my husband (who doesn't wear glasses), since we have good vision insurance. Dr. Chun was fantastically thorough with both of us! Best check-up I've ever had, especially since she actually seemed interested in explaining why she was doing what and educating me (nicely) on eye health. AND she diagnosed a case of slight astigmatism in my husband - he'd been getting headaches after staring at the computer screen all day at work, but a couple of prior eye checks had turned up nothing. Finally, the office staff was super friendly (even giving me some quarters to feed the meter when I ran out), and helped pick out frames for my husband and myself. Even if we move out of the Mission Terrace neighborhood, I'll trek across the city to come see Dr. Chun again. read more

This is long overdue but the staff here are really helpful. I wanted to get prescription ray bans sunglasses and they didn't carry the model but they ordered them for me and they came fairly quickly 2-3 weeks. When I went to pick them up the doctor spent a lot of time adjusting the nose peddles and making sure the glasses weren't too big or too tight around my head.
