Huntingdon is a small town to which new trends come slowly and often imperfectly - the town, after all, still hasn't really accepted Juniata College, one of its largest employers, but - to be fair - it hasn't been quite 150 since the college was founded in 1876. So, it's almost a miracle that Huntingdon got its own microbrewery while the craft beer renaissance was still on, rather than decades later. Juniata Brewing Company is a welcome addition to the Sleepy Borough (by the way, there is no relationship with the college of the same name - the town has zoned all areas near the students "non-commercial" in order to deprive itself of the disposable cash these students bring to Huntingdon every year). JBC is located in a repurposed building in a fairly isolated part of town, adjacent to the railroad tracks but not on the "wrong side" of the tracks. The owners have created a welcoming if small tasting room, where a friendly staff serves flights, pints, pours, and take-away growlers of ~8 house-made seasonally rotating beers in a variety of styles, along (usually) with one or two kombuchas and a limited roster of mixed drinks. I have only tried the beers, but have visited nearly a dozen times, so have a sense of their variety and would say that JBC's brewing team is at its best to meet my interest when it steps beyond the "normal" styles. My favorites have been "Bierecat" - a delightful farmhouse ale that I've only seen offered once, "Cozy Cabin Porter", a Belgian-styled "Golden Strong Ale", and "Standing Stone Stout". These all were exciting and unexpectedly good. Other IPAs, lagers, and kölsches, however, have tended to be less interesting and are frequently similar enough in taste, color, mouthfeel, and effects that they are fairly hard to tell apart. The good news there, I guess, is that if you like one of them you'll probably enjoy the others. None were bad but few warranted a refill for me. One consistent problem at JBC, however, is under-carbonation. Their beers typically pour with little or no head and quickly begin to go quite flat. So customers may want to drink quickly, but it would be better to see JBC address this since it's an issue I've noticed consistently in visits over the past 1-2 years and have seen other reviewers note on Yelp and Untappd. Prices are quite reasonable for craft beer ($4.50-$7.00 for a pint), but reviews from the town seem incensed that their beer isn't as cheap or as tasteless as Miller Lite As I said, Juniata College is only now being grudgingly accepted after 148 years as a potential benefit to the town and its economy, so it may be too much to expect all The Sleepy Borough's residents to reawaken to the non-corporate brewing history that flourished in this part of Pennsylvania back when Juniata was founded and into the early 20th century or to accept that beer should have flavor and variety. But hard work and capital investment in the business (and the borough) has a price...which JBC keeps down enough to meet local budgets and still stay in business. There will always be cheap corporate beer and lifeless places to swill it down. JBC is better than those, and so is its beer. It's important to mention that at some craft breweries food is optional. However, there is rarely an option for food at JBC, perhaps due to Pennsylvania's arcane and antiquated laws regulating food and drink consumption and licensing. Posts on Facebook and Instagram, however, alert the clientele to food trucks, live music, and special events like "bacon bingo", where winners take home the bacon. So as long as you come to enjoy a drink, rather than expecting a meal, want to try a few styles to find the one that meets your tastes, and aren't expecting extremely low prices for low-quality corporate lager, it's definitely worth stepping in to Juniata Brewing Company for a flight, a full pour, a growler to take home, or cans of the varieties they keep in stock. People like this place, its laid-back atmosphere, and outdoor seating and its scheduled events. You probably will, too. It's also Huntingdon's only craft brewery, so drop in and help them grow...and encourage them to carbonate. read more

There's no point driving here. The parking situation is awful. There are about 7-10 spaces, depending on how people park. Pretty much every other square inch around the place has a no parking sign. I'm guessing they only want people within walking distance to come in. So, after driving around the block a few times, waiting a couple minutes for someone to leave, running the trigonometric equations in my head to see if my truck would fit in the semi-hypotenusey space available, I left, and decided to find somewhere to go that was a little more open to people in motor vehicles. In other words, I never tried the food, or the beer. I did find myself wondering how many people leave there with scars in their cars, and get accused of drunk driving, when all they did was pull out of the Cooter's garage parking lot; 6.25 car max capacity. read more

Cute, quaint brewery close to Juniata College. We stopped after picking my son up from volleyball camp. Clerk (owner I believe) was very helpful and friendly. We enjoyed a drink (he got a beer and I got a wine slushy) while our boys enjoyed playing disc golf in the back outside area. I would not have even know there was an outside area if we didn't see a pic of it online. It's a pretty cool area in the back that looks like it has entertainment on the weekends. Probably a fun place for college kids during the school year. read more

A nice little brewery in an unexpected location! Tons of drink options, though no food as others have noted. I enjoyed a sour and my family all enjoyed the various drafts and cocktails that they tried. There is seating both indoors and outdoors, and we had a good time seating in the unexpected outdoor area close to the old rail tracks. There's a stage, so I imagine they have live music occasionally as well! read more

Came in for a flight, as I was passing through the area. Tried two IPAs (Raystown Ray and River Float) and a kolsch, which were all decent. I also got a saison, which was a little dry and I could not finish it. The interior was clean and bright, although it was a little on the small side. It looked like they had more spaces in the warehouses in the back for larger groups, plus outdoor seating. The bar staff was extremely friendly. There was a food truck outside, which is always nice to see offered, although we didn't order from it. There's not a lot of craft beer options in the area, but this place looks like a good start. read more

I was really tempted not to write this review because I am very sympathetic to small business owner/operators but this place needs help and Huntingdon deserves a better place to drink good beer. There are small number of very important components to making and serving good beer. One is proper carbonation. I visited this Huntingdon location twice and sampled 3 of their beer and all 3 of them had little to no head when poured. By the 2nd or 3rd sip the beer was totally flat. The second problem which contributed to this first problem was, I suspect they weren't serving their beer in "beer clean" glasses. There was no evidence of sip rings on my glass. There wasn't any evidence that the beer ever had a head on it. At my first visit, I questioned the bartender about the flatness and his response was the beer was flat because they just opened for the day! What?? At my second visit, I was talking to the bartender about my impression of their beer and was getting no interest at all! I asked to speak to the brewer, who was there, I was told and she said "just a minute" I let 20 minutes later, totally disappointed. I do hope this helps. Huntingdon deserves better! read more

We stopped by hoping to sample a couple of beers and then if impressed buy a few 6 packs for a weekend event. They only can a few beers from the tap currently, so that wasn't an option, but no big deal. The beers we had were good. I had a Hazy IPA and enjoyed it. We weren't expecting it, but we were there on an Open Mic night and enjoyed the performances in the nice outdoor area. read more

Visiting Huntingdon for the first time. Stopped here after dinner and was surprised by the quality and craftsmanship. I enjoyed everything in the flight; the flavors are well balanced, composed, and refined, and would be at home here, or any cosmopolitan area. Very well done! read more

I grew up in Huntingdon county, but have been moving around for years. I was THRILLED when I found out we had a brewery! The beers are TOP NOTCH! my husband and I happened to be there when there was live music, so of course that's an added bonus! I love this place and will be back when I'm back in town! read more

Great place, friendly staff, and loyal regulars. Despite this being a mom-and-pop joint, there's always live music on the weekends and you can tell they genuinely support the scene here. Although, there is no food which should be noted - this is a great place to hang out. Nice little place! We almost didnt come because of the two previous reviews. We were very glad we did come. We were greeted by a friendly barkeeper who immediately offered our dog a treat, made from spent grains. The place is nicely decorated with wood that was reclaimed from the warehouse. Its a new brewery, just getting it's start, but I think it will mature very nice. We enjoyed our visit and of course the beer! We would definitely go back. read more

Don't waste your time. I don't know if the guy behind the bar was the owner, but after 5 minutes of dealing with his rude behavior we were ready to leave. One beer and we were gone. There are not many options around the lake, but this place doesn't know a thing about customer relations. We will not return. read more

I stopped by during the Covid when they only had curbside pickup. I had to ask questions about their product which seemed to irritate the employee. Ended up buying a quart of their strong brew in a mason jar. The total was $12.00 for a quart of beer. Beer was nothing special. I guess if you are doing a destination outing this might be a fun place to go but its not for me. read more
