Although the wait time of 1 month for an estimate was clearly communicated up front, I was willing to wait based on the positive recommendation of a neighbor. Kevin showed up, exactly as planned, to review our fence repair needs but there was no follow up communication following his visit. I'm frankly confused as to what happened and was disappointed to have waited so long for an estimate and then to receive no response to my multiple request(s) as to whether they would provide an estimate. We recently bought a house that had been a rental for 20+ years. One of the things that hadn't been maintained was the back fence, which is right next to a popular walkway. Two years ago Kevin and his crew from Just Fences and Decks repaired our backyard fences after the winter storms. We were very pleased with the result, and I knew that if we required any more fence or deck work I'd use Kevin's services. This year our 2-level redwood deck needed some serious repair work, and the first (and only) contractor I contacted was Kevin. Kevin gave me two options - power-washing and restaining, or a full sanding, resetting of all screws, and two (or more) coats of latex stain. Knowing the quality of Kevin's work I chose the latter - naturally, it cost more but the end result was a seemingly brand new deck. The boards all look new, the surface is now perfectly flat again w/o any rusted or broken screws popping through the surface, and grandchildren can now run around barefoot on the deck w/o concern of splinters. We also have a tree-house set in an old Valley Oak tree and Kevin's team reinforced the tree-house base and put heavy protective paint on its floor. Throughout the project Kevin or his office manager Craig were regular in touch with us, asking for our feedback, letting us know if there will be any schedule change, when workers would arrive, and what payments were made and when they were due. I want to give a special shout-out to Kevin's lead man on our home project, Danny. Danny works quickly, efficiently and methodically. About 15 years ago Kevin built almost 100 feet of fencing for me and that fence is standing strong, so when I need a new fence along another side, I called Kevin. He called me back right away and we set up a time and date for him to come by, take a look and give me a quote. Kevin came by within a few days, working around my work schedule and my neighbor's. He looked at the old fence, listened to what my neighbor and I wanted in the new fence, answered all our questions and made good suggestions. Within a week he sent a quote listing the materials he would use, the type of fence he would build, what would be included and what wouldn't and the time it would take. The quote was very reasonable and my neighbor and I were quite pleased and accepted the quote. As it was a busy time of year for fence building I was concerned it would be several weeks before Kevin could fit us in but no, within two week he contacted me and gave me a start date just a couple of days away. Kevin was there each day and he and his crew were very respectful of our properties. My plants weren't damaged and at the end of the project, everything was cleaned up. The project took two days and I now have 85 feet of beautiful redwood fencing and couldn't be more pleased. Kevin is such a professional that when I accidentally over paid by $100, a mistake I didn't catch but he did, he sent me a check for $100 dollars along with a statement showing the payments I had made and where I over paid. I have an elaborate set of stairs connecting two decks up a hill in my back yard (all redwood). Over time I had let it deteriorate so that the stairs weren't quite connected to the landings anymore, boards were rotted, and the whole thing was covered in lichen. It felt very unsafe; but it was such an investment, I really didn't want to lose it. Kevin came over, gave me a reasonable bid and a clear contract, set a date, and did the work beautifully. His crew was very disrespectful, they trashed our yard, broke my hose, and used one of my nice outdoor rugs to cover their tools at night. They moved a heavy wine barrel planter and didn't put it back, even after I asked twice. They also went dark halfway through the process and we could not reach them for five days. They left my backyard littered with debris making it unusable during the time that they would not return our calls. Part of the job was to replace a pool equipment enclosure. It ended up so horrible that they just left it unfinished and I had to find someone else to come in and do the job. It's a year later and my fence looks awful. They were supposed to replace what was there but they built a fence that is a good 6 inches shorter and the boards are so far apart you can see right into my neighbors yard. Sadly, I didn't get the chance to work with these folks. I got a couple of voicemails from Craig right away asking me to call them back to setup an appointment. The first and second were was typical enough. The third one was very curt. Craig went on to say that "we have many calls and people who are wanting our time." Somehow the fact that I work and have other commitments was an issue for Craig. By the way, the first two messages were a week apart, and the third was the day after the second. It had been less than a week that I had sent an email inquiring about his services. Although I was a bit put off, he has such great reviews on here so I called him back and left him two messages asking him to call me back. He had randomly selected a time and date that worked for him to come here and review the project, which he left on my voicemail without ever speaking with me. In both of my messages I asked him to call me back and gave him alternative dates to possibly connect. He has never called me back. Since when does the person being hired call the shots...especially before they have the job? I will find another company to perform the work and I'm sure it will be great. It's interactions like this that help me understand why home improvements and working with contractors have gotten such bad reputations. read more
