2nd review here... visited for a drink. It took about 6-7 minutes before we were approached at the bar... when they came over they apologized. I asked for a lemon drop and we were brought two lemon drop shops instead. The he guy said something about not being able to make them as they got busier? Idk, we left after that. I had thought this was the best gay bar in STL I'd often tell others this as well.... but my recent experience has changed that view. I understand possibly having to close early due to unforeseen issues especially during pride. However you should communicate this to the huge line that has been waiting an hour out front, and also not let some people in through the exit. I witnessed at least five let in that way before I was fed up and left my place in line. In comparison your competitor was screaming from their door that they were closed and not accepting anyone new in. I used to enjoy this bar but for me to return and advocate for your business you will have to do better! read more

My friends and I ended up at Just John after we went to Gramophone for happy hour last week. We went straight to the tiered patio's bar and ordered drinks. I just asked for my usual 'I don't know what to order so create me a cocktail.' my specification were: sweet, fruity, and not carbonated. I tasted pineapple and rum and that's all I know. The owner is super rude and ignores bad reviews, in fact, sasses them instead of like being concerned that they're losing customers, not to mention people are always doing drugs here and there's a super unsafe patio that people are always falling on and getting into fights on, rude employees, and the trash music is for elder millennials. Boomer owner really thinks it's cool to hate on every person who thinks the bar could improve--won't be returning. Go to rehab down the street. Just John, yo! Contrary to the name, this bar seeks to be queer friendly... It is not just for johns. It is certainly thought of as a gay bar, but the whole spectrum of the LGBTQ community tends to find themselves here...and happily so. Also worth mentioning, this bar is not JJ's. JJ's is a different bar! Don't get it twisted. One of my favorite parts of Just John is the patio. DJ Mego playing old school bangers and top 40 is the vibe that most Saturday evenings call for, especially after having a couple hotel waters in ya! Hotel Water is what Robyn Hearts affectionately calls cucumber vodka and water. I'm obsessed with this drink, if you didn't know. I don't come here for craft beer or top notch cocktails, necessarily... Just a good time, Miller Lite, and Katy Perry blaring on ten. Fraudulent drink charges were added to my 3 drink tab to a total of $57.00. Management was very dismissive of the situation but said they were going to "check the tapes" and call me the next day. I never received a call back after leaving a voicemail and making multiple calls back to the club. I had to dispute the charge through my credit agency which was a lengthy hassle, but ultimately resolved itself. Looking at other poor reviews, fraudulent charges on a tab without resolve from management seems to be a reoccurring issue. I would recommend going to any other bar in the Grove though, this seems to not be an issue at every other bar in the area. Rehab & Handlebar are nearby options! Confession: Until about a week ago, I'd never been to a gay bar, which is crazy, considering how many gay friends I've had over the years. I came here with a group after a friend's farewell dinner, and OH MY GOD AWESOMESAUCEFUNPANDEMONIUM! We came on a Thursday. When we arrived around 9:30, there were only about 8 people at the bar, plus two bartenders and a super-young ID checker. We took our group of 8 guys and girls around the giant bar in the center to the pub tables in the back. The folks who had been here before went off to say hi to everyone, while the rest of us looked through the karaoke books. Everyone ordered drinks, and we moved up to the front of the bar once our names began to be called for karaoke. I LOVE that there's a little stage with lights here, and everyone - all bar patrons, the bartenders and the karaoke show runners - cheer you on LOUDLY while you're singing. Super awesome for we applause hogs. :) The bar got more and more people from about 10:30 forward, and everyone was super friendly. The crowd was mixed - mostly gay men, but some gay women and straight people of both genders and those in between, as well. Strangers were complimenting my outfit, my voice, my song selection and my friends. And when a someone pulled my friend who was moving from St. Louis up onto the stage for a song, the whole bar sang along and clapped and wished her well. Seriously, EVERYONE seemed like they were friends with everyone here, and instead of making us newcomers feel excluded, they welcomed us with open arms and a squeeze of the tushie. Awesomesauce: The bar is nonsmoking, and it's in the Grove on Manchester, so it's easily accessible via bus. Otherwise, there's street parking. I'm totally, totally begging my gay boys to bring me back here. Lovedlovedloved it! Note to karaoke lovers: The karaoke songlist books are pretty thin; I'm used to a wider selection. If Lady Gaga and musicals are your thing, you'll be in heaven. If Alice in Chains and Garbage are more your style, you might have a hard time finding music. I arrived at Just John last Monday with a gay couple from out of town. That night, they happened to have homo bingo - easily the best thing any bar that I have ever visited offers. Homo bingo involves a beautiful cross-dresser calling numbers and when you win you can chose from glassware or a wide array of erotica, gay porn, and other naughty literature. Best of all, it's free. I didn't feel out of place at all; granted the majority of people there were gay men, but there were a few girls hanging out and there were probably a couple straight guys in the mix. I thoroughly enjoyed the bartender affixing a Just John temporary tattoo to another guy's chest with his mouth. The drinks weren't the cheapest ($5 for a ShockTop.. really?) but you get to play free bingo so it's kind of a give-take situation. It seems like they have pretty good drink specials on other nights. I definitely will be back to Just John.. even if it's just to watch the reaction when O-69 comes up in bingo. read more

I am really impressed with Just John's, the owners really take time and effort and pride into making their bar a nice place to visit. its very appealing to the eyes, has a lot of nice additions like outdoor patio, several bars to choose from, and a super comfortable atmosphere to enjoy with your friends on a Saturday night. There is a stage, where some choose to dance, video screens, and they play some great music throughout the night for your listening pleasure. the staff is really great, a bunch of friendly folks, and some great eye candy too. read more

Karaoke at a gay bar?! Who comes up with this stuff? On Thursday night, I was summoned to The Grove for a night of karaoke. Apparently, Allison B. hadn't done enough karaoke during her week long experiment and invited several friends out for another night of tomfoolery. I must admit that I've spent quite a few nights at the gay bars around The Grove. However, Just John's had always been sort of a passing thing. Normally, we would go to Novak's or Rehab, but karaoke called us to JJ's. And we did answer! Give it up for the daily specials! JJ's has a drink special for every night of the week, including Fridays and Saturdays. Unfortunately, Thursday night was not beer related, having three dollar cherry bombs. But they have good domestic bottle specials Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday. Also, gotta give props to Rendezvous Entertainment, the people running the karaoke. Aside from Allison, they were about the friendliest kjs that I have come across in my time doing karaoke. We did have an "in" with them, having a mutual friend. Either way, they were nice and let us know when we were coming up. Unfortunately, the place was happening, so I didn't get to sing more than once. However, they do host karaoke on Tuesday nights, so it's bound to be easier to get in on that evening. If I received the call to return to Just John's for karaoke, I would definitely answer. Thursday night karaoke, what a great time! Plenty of guys there but also plenty of women and virtually everyone was having a blast! One girl did Janis Joplin so well you'd have sworn Janis herself was on stage, Incrediballz! Good service at the bar, drinks were well made and my glass never went dry. I don't know anything about the Grove but Just John made a terrific impression. This was stop one on an excursion through The Grove, an arts and entertainment district in St. Louis. Thought it interesting that they had a sandwich board outside proclaiming "NO COVER TONIGHT". Inside, the physical plant, and bar staff tried to set an upbeat, upscale Stand and Model vibe. Too bad that too many of the people were there would only be models for a Walmart ad. Told the bartender to surprise me. He did. With a treacle syrupy concoction that left me wanting to scrape my tongue with a knife to cut the cloyingly sweet taste. The name says it all. Just John's....or johnsons mainly. Men wagging their tongues at the pretty scenery surrounded around them. I learned some new lingo this weekend that I had never heard before. My friend explained to me that Just John's is where the pretty gays go, and that the "leathers" go to JJ's. Not to be confused between the two. Leathers are men who are a tad more rugged and manly men versus Just John's well....have the clean cut types. Who knew? Anyway, after lesson learned, and observing the place, my friend wasn't lying. All the men there were really pretty to look at. Just John's bar was as clean cut as their clientele. The outside patio was a tropical oasis tiki bar kind of set up. Clean, well kept, and plenty of outdoor seating space. Smoking is permitted outside on the patio, but honestly that particular night, there wasn't a ton of smokers. Which I'm kind of glad about. This place is kind of an ongoing maze. There is a covered patio, uncovered patio, 1 main bar with a stage, karaoke area, one huge bar in the middle and topless bartenders heavily at work. The other main room is where the bathrooms, another bar, and the entrance off Manchester are. I truly liked it. It seems like the place to be on a Friday or Saturday night. I'm not sure if it is 1:30 or a 3am bar considering we hand progressed on by 12:15am. I will say this though, their drinks are really good and well priced. I was just roaming around in the grove area and saw this bar. I didn't know it was a gay and lesbian bar and normally I would have left right away but it turned out to be fun. Very friendly people, drinks were free( on that day[monday] between 21 hrs to 22 hrs), very spacious, plus there was a good crowd of people even on a weekday. It's well designed too. So, i went out with some of my friends Friday night and we went down to the grove for some drinks, and fun. This was our second stop because some in the crowd wanted to have a little eye candy that they couldn't at the first stop (it was across the street) and so we trekked to this establishment where the drinks were cheaper (and had more booze in them!) and where my companions proclaimed that they had much tastier bartenders (I'm going to give them a pass on this one, i guess?) The night we went in there was this fun fundraiser going on for the Gay Rodeo and let me tell you it was both entertaining, but it was just fun to sit and watch the people come up for underwear (yep, you read that right... they were auctioning off underwear.... for a good cause!). The main bar was packed with people and it was never off putting but it was a fun vibe that i appreciate (and have for years now!) The outside has three tiers to it which comes in handy on cooler nights. There is a sort of outside room with garage doors that come down to keep the chill out and then there is the two decks with a bar attached for those whom want to come out to enjoy the lovely weather (or just enjoy more quiet from the noise inside) I really love to come on Mondays for the bingo, but any night there seems to have something to do. read more

What's not to love about Just John's (or is it Just John, I am never sure)? There are three different bars (and sometimes a beer booth right inside the entrance for even quicker booze) and they can add to your tab from whichever bar you would like to order at. That pretty much sums it up. But it gets even better. Surprise! They have a stage/dance floor, a huge multilevel patio, and a self-serve popcorn machine. With different flavored salts. Yes, that's right - your drunk ass can decide if you want plain old popcorn, the super salty kind, or powdery cheese flavor! Or you know, all three - because it will sound like a great choice at the time, trust me. They have a bar by the popcorn machine on the right of the building, one outside, and the main bar is by the stage. The main bar has seating on the opposite side of the stage and it gives you a regular bar kinda vibe because there are just a few tall tables. The popcorn bar doesn't have a lot of seating around it, so it is kind of a gathering spot. The room both of those bars lead into is actually a garage. In the summer, they have the doors up with limited furniture, and in the winter they close the doors and it transforms into a chic-looking, intimate little room. In the summer they have gigantic fans going on the patio. You are super lucky if you get a seat by one - it's heaven. In the winter they have the patio open as well, but with heaters and they close in part of the outside bar. I absolutely love that they keep the patio open, heated, and cooled for the seasons because it is great if you get too hot dancing or if you just want to get away from the large crowds inside. Now that we've covered that there is a place for EVERY person to enjoy no matter what kind of atmosphere they want, let's discuss how crazy busy it gets. Let me put it like this: you might want to think about wearing the same color shirt or even personalized ones so you can find everybody you came with. Yep, that crazy. The only problem I have with the entire place is that sometimes they do tend to immediately serve their target clientele instead of keeping track of who was there first - kinda like they have blinders. I have waited quite a while on many occasions even after the bartenders have made eye contact and everything. Other than that though, the staff is very friendly and willing to experiment with drinks when they aren't busy. Bottom line: go on a weeknight for a pretty laid back, fun time (especially when they have karaoke) and definitely hit it up on the weekend and be prepared to have a blast. :] read more

Just John is in a great location with sufficient parking. The space is great with nice space and atmosphere. HOWEVER on a recent visit on Sunday 18 June, the DJ controlled music on the patio was so overpowering, we had to leave within 10 minutes, leaving our unfinished beer. The music was appreciated, but when we found ourselves shouting to attempt a normal conversation, it was hopeless. It's great to have the music to enhance the Sunday afternoon vibe, but the intensity was way OVER THE TOP. in addition the music for the show tunes in the main bar was so loud, it was unrecognizable without the video playing I'm looking forward to trying another visit soon and hope I'll be able to converse with friends. read more
