All are welcome! After finishing dinner with some friends, one suggested we come to the Crack Fox as it was their 15-year anniversary. We arrived a little after 11 and found a space in the back parking lot. The lot is convenient as it's pretty well-lit and is diagonal from the CF. We entered through the back where the deck is and walked right in. Upon first glance, you'll notice the hanging lights above the entrance and then after a few feet, the bar is immediately to the right. The tables are all along the left side as to make a walkway for the bar (super convenient). Due it being their anniversary, it was a bit crowded but not too bad where you couldn't get a drink or walk through. My usual go-to is a flavored vodka (three olives grape) and sprite. While they had a plethora of spirits, sadly this wasn't one of them. They had other flavored vodkas but I opted to get a simple Cosmo while my friend got a makers and coke. The Cosmo was just what I needed and might I add, well made!After we got our drinks, we did a quick walk through of the other side called The Oddities (coming soon), as well as the upstairs that overlooks the entire place. The stairs are steep, so it would behoove you to hold on to the railing. While I love trying new places, I was a bit apprehensive because I thought I'd stick out like a sore thumb. Turns out, everyone was friendly, the drinks are great, and the music wasn't bad! They had different acts going on for this particular evening (I'm not sure if this is the norm), but I know my friend is a regular on Tuesday's for karaoke. I do intend to come back and try out some more drinks and food and check out the other place once it officially opens. read more

Great vibes, casual but cocktails you'd find at a much fancier bar. They're unique and fun. I've never had a bad drink there. The staff is always nice and quick. Not a ton of seating and it gets kinda crowded depending on the night. There is a dance floor and their events are a great time. Very open minded, positive atmosphere. read more

Attended an event here, the drink menu had a lot of good options and were all fairly priced. They also had a good menu of mocktails which is always appreciated. Bartenders were all friendly. It had a unique charm, lot of interesting decor. They had karaoke going when we were there and seemed to be a decent crowd if that's your thing! read more

I was in town for a night and wanted to get a taste of the St. Louis nightlife as I was walking around near my hotel near the arch. The Crack Fox came up on Yelp as a good place to dance/hang, so as I was walking past it, I decided to pop in. The back patio was popping and seemed like a lot of fun, and I went ahead and tried to enter, but they let me know there was a $15 cover, so I didn't want to go inside sight unseen and pay a cover. They asked if I just wanted to go inside to grab a drink and come out and I said sure, which I was glad I did...since when I came inside; while there was a cool DJ, there was only a few people dancing--so I would have been pretty upset about paying $15 for that. I'm sure it probably popped off a little bit later than that (it was like 11pm at this point?), but either way--the vibe inside was cool and the patio seemed cool; so I'd definitely make this a regular stop of your downtown STL night life! read more

I came here for karaoke on a Friday night with a friend for the first time since 2010. The venue has had a lot of upgrades since then. There was suprisingly ample street parking right outside the venue. When you come in, it's low lighting and intimate. The bar staff are very friendly. I will say my first drink was a bit too iced out for me so it was really hard to even taste or enjoy the alcoholic beverage that lied beneath the iceberg that the Titanic hit. It was a lavender mint julep sort of drink that would probably gain more traction as a martini to be honest. All the drinks I ordered after that was their house made peach infused vodka with soda. The flavoring of the vodka was delightful and it was a much better cocktail. They also serve pizza. I had a buffalo chicken pizza and it's a bit much for my gut! Cheers! read more

I came out for their monthly Impossible Trivia, which was a fun time! The questions were a good mix of topics and obscurity. The owner and bartender were both lovely and welcoming. It was my first time at this bar, and they were really nice and made time to chat a bit. They recommended a yummy apple spice vodka (i didnt catch the brand) to use in a Moscow Mule, which was so good I had two. Last observation: loved the Labyrinth wall art. Edit: I checked my receipt in the light of day, and I decided to remove one star (only one) because I dont see my Yelp check-in offer of a discount applied. I kinda think the owner forgot that she had offered a Yelp check-in thing. The drinks were still very good, and I was surprised an offer even popped up! This place was a dive. I went there because there was a burlesque show (pre-COVID) and the burlesque show was great, but the place is not clean and really makes you feel dirty when you leave. I guess they have their fans but I don't see how this place stays open. read more

The Crack Fox! It can be easy to overlook this interesting spot when you're thinking of places downtown. They have dj nights, karaoke nights, and my personal favorite drag. They regulars seem to be whimsical, into metal, and incredible kind. It's a very unassuming bar where you can get great drinks at a reasonable price. They keep the dive-y spirit alive with their Dogtown pizza option for food. They adamantly don't sell AB products, but that's okay with me because they have Miller Lite, a personal fave. Bottom Line: Goth/Black Leather/Black Hair Feel, Super Friendly Lady Bartender, Memorable Overview: After stopping in at the Thaxton Speakeasy, my friend and I stopped in at the Crack Fox. My first time. Tonight, they had DJ Chrome along with some cat of nine tales(?) beatings on these 'X'-style crucifixes (is that the correct plural usage?). Drinks: They had a beer that was decent. That's all I got and all I recall of their selection. Atmosphere: I think most of the goth contingent of STL was in the house. (Yes, I'm a white guy.) Quite the scene and quite hospitable. I felt welcome hanging out in my 'Lion's Choice' retro T-Shirt and shorts. Music: As I mentioned, they had DJ Chrome spinning. I think KMFDM, Rammstein, etc. are some of the more accessible bands he played. My first bump! Alright. I said some pretty silly things about the Crack Fox in my first review. However, many of those opinions still hold true, but perhaps my initial view of this place was a little one dimensional. The Crack Fox is not just an electronic nightclub. It's actually pretty well-rounded with its acts. Tuesday nights is a big draw for me because it's Punk Rock Karaoke! Also, they like to host burlesque shows. And, fortunately, not every band that plays there is in a goofy electronic band! Back to Punk Rock Karaoke. The name is slightly misleading because it's simply karaoke. At first, I thought that it would be nothing but greasers getting up on stage and screaming their hearts out to Ramones, Clash, and Misfits songs. I must admit my disappointment in that aspect. However, they have a nice selection of songs, and the people running it are pretty cool. KDHX's own Al Swacker hosts the evening, even though the night got underway long before he arrived. I think that he's more of a figurehead for the evening, but he was quite approachable and very cool. What really gets my star bump is the staff. The bartender was a pretty rad chap, even though he was obsessed with singing Flogging Molly all night! They were having issues with the credit card machine that night, but we arranged a way for us to pay for our drinks. Also, Al's karaoke helpers were very nice and were willing to check for any requests that weren't in the book. All in all, I am becoming a fan of Crack Fox. read more

Found this place by accident! I was staying downtown at the Marriot and decided to walk around, stumbled upon this little baby when they had a "Nerd Trivia Night". SO I was just there, it's about 30 minute drive from my home. I went to see Voltaire who I have been wanting to see for years and a friend give mew some tickets: Pros: Parking, lots of it and easy to find Staff, friendly as hell atmosphere, Dark but homey Cons: the "sound tech" they had for the show tonight had the music fine in the beginning, but the song before the first band went up was so loud my ears started to hurt, the female at the front of the house motioned for the "sound tech" to turn up the music, and with in 10 minutes of the show starting I had to leave. The music was so loud that not only was one of the bartenders wearing ear plugs, But I had to nearly yell to talk to the other bartender. Once out side the music was still loud but at this point I was done and headed home. SO over all: Would love to give more than two stars. The venue is amazing has great atmosphere the bartenders have been the friendliest I've ever dealt with. The biggest problem here is when doing live shows their music is so loud your ears will start to ring before you leave. I wasn't able to hear the singer over the actual music that they were playing it was so loud even their bartender was wearing sound protection. The "DJ" (he had an ipod playlist) decided it would be a good idea to drunkenly school me on the history of industrial music. Honey I'm old, I'm from Chicago, and I lived thru the Wax Trax hey day, so your little spiel about what hot shit you are, well, *Shania Twain voice* that don't impress me much! Fire this dude immediately, he's embarrassing. Fyi, I was ordering a drink when he sauntered over to prattle on about bullshit. Apropos of nothing. And it wasn't in an "I'm hitting on you" way, at all. It was in a "You are new here let me show you the ropes" kind of way. I haaaaaaaaaaate when a band plays here. The acoustics are terrible and no matter what it is always way, WAY too loud. To the point where it's all just useless distorted noise. This is a dreadful venue for live music. High points: The TARDIS thing in the back is cool. You can buy individual clove cigarettes from the bartender. I'm actually not kidding, that happens. Man joints like this are so hard to review because I don't know what the hell it is. Is it a music venue? A bar? A club? I can't tell. So I had my first Crack Fox experience this weekend. They were celebrating their 3 year anniversary and a friend's band was playing, so I guess because of that, and because the stage is the first thing you see upon entrance, it's a music venue. Who knows. Pros: -Good booze selection. Craft beer, lots of spirits, etc etc. Not great, but decent prices (it's not like yr gonna find a sweet dive bar downtown, let's be realistic) -Various "nights." They do goth nights and metal nights and burlesque nights and let's face it, there aren't a lot of venues for that stuff (or maybe there are, I pay zero attention to any of this namely because I don't care) and the goths need somewhere to hang out after the mall closes so bless you Crack Fox for giving them a peaceful space. -Bathroom isn't gross -Quick service, good bartenders -You could walk in here wearing a trash bag or the newest shit from Dior and no one would give you a second look. Cons: - IT IS 2012 AND MUSIC VENUES STILL ALLOW SMOKING? WHAT IN THE FRESH HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU??????? Musicians don't deserve that mess in their faces and neither do I. It's very rare that I go to smoking bars since the "ban," and I usually avoid them at all costs now. If I have to wash my hair before I get into bed because of a bar, I need a reeeeeally good reason to go back because no. Just no. - I don't understand the setup? The stage is next to the front door, so if you're trying to watch a show, you're constantly being forced to move because of the people coming and going. They also store all of the band's equipment in the same area where we're hanging out which is a little scary for the musicians (what if some drunk dude runs off with a guitar, seriously, it would be so easy). The crack fox is TWO FREAKIN FLOORS MAN, it wouldn't take a rocket scientist to figure out a few small alterations that would improve the whole "show" dynamic of the place. -It's downtown and parking is piss. It will always be piss, so maybe I shouldn't complain because I know what I'm getting in to, but when there are 200 bars (i'm just making stats up and I don't care) that have close parking and cheap drinks, why would I hang out downtown on a Saturday night? I've been periodically stopping into the Crack Fox for a year now and I ended up there Wednesday night in between having dinner at Wasabi for the Sushi for Japan event and the 1860's Pizza and Wings event. I meant to come in for maybe 2 drinks but ended up having a few more than that and a great conversation with Nikki the bartender. Soon, we both realized that Saint Louis is a really small place as we both worked at the same bar for a time and knew a lot of the same people. I have to say Nikki and Carrie are definitely two of the best bartenders in Saint Louis. When I come into this place it is usually after work so it is good to just sit back and listen to whatever music is playing inside and hang out. Happy hour is really good! Definitely a laid back atmosphere before a show starts. Not to mention they schedule some really cool shows and events. Like what you say? Burlesque Shows? Check. DJ/Electronica Shows? Check. Art shows? Check. Karaoke? Check. PBR for 1.50 during happy hour? Check! Most recently they had Vincent Price movie night which I wasn't able to attend due to a prior commitment but when I saw that on the list of things on their huge chalkboard, I knew next time something like that I'll need to make it a point to attend the next one. I'm surprised there aren't any reviews on this place, yet... whatever. I'll do the honors. The Crack Fox is a small bar/venue in downtown that caters to a different crowd than the bars a couple blocks away on Washington. Whereas you'll be listening to pop-rap or cover bands up *there*, at the Crack Fox you'll most likely be listening to some obscure industrial or electronica. On Washington, it's button-up shirts and tiny, black dresses, but at the Crack Fox, it's often see through mesh shirts and leather dresses. You starting to get the picture? It's an alternative club, in the truest sense. The decor is all dark-red and black, making for a good match with its clientele. Carrie, the owner, is a real fine lass, and she holds great events through her own production company (Conspiracy STL) and others (Subversion, Rapture, etc.). The cost is always reasonable, and the drinks are as stiff as they need to be. Some of St Louis' top alternative talent plays here, but that also bring me to the reason I can't give the Crack Fox a 5-star rating: the sound. It's not *horrible*, per se, but it's just mediocre enough that you'll probably make a comment about it. With some bands, it's not a problem, but if there's a drum kit up on stage, there might be problems. Overall, though, you SHOULD go to the Crack Fox. It's one of St Louis' best bars, and unless you're a complete douche, you'll enjoy it! UPDATE (9/8/2011): After coming here a bunch more times, I'm changing my rating to 5-star. Although the gripe about the sound is still there, it's less of an issue after they upgraded their stage setup. New sound equipment, new lights, etc. Sounds and looks better than before. read more

I have attended a few events here and was underwhelmed. For a large cover charge, you should get something more than a mediocre dj and semi-attractive art students dancing around. (You could probably get the same experience going to a college party for free.) Anyway, the drinks are decent here, so if you happen to be in the neighborhood it is worth a stop...just don't go out of your way. I love this place, it's caters to a variety of awesome themes. They have a great selection of drinks, is roomy but not so big that you feel like you're lost, and they always have a great place to hang out :) This is the type of place you visit when you know you want to do something outside the traditional 'bar' scene but still want to be able to get affordable drinks and see great live shows and/or hear great music. Looking forward to Flestivus this year! My suspension crew will be performing, so this place gets double thumbs up, just for allowing us to suspend in there!
