    806 lounge was a special dinner and it was worth it. It is a 113 year building and to be dining there, right in the middle on Downtown Houston felt historically important. Not as rich in cultural history as the rest of the world, this is definitely one of the things America can boast of. Earlier it was called the Carter building, named after Samual Carter who owned the then tallest skyscraper in Texas in 1910! Infact, it was so tall and so new to the city that people doubted if it would survive, ....well....it has, and we have plenty more taller ones all around the city now- if only Samual were alive , he'd say, "I told u so !" The building was renovated and converted to a hotel by JW Marriot in 2014, and there is a Main Kitchen and the 806 Bar & Lounge at street level. My imagination runs wild for a second while I am waiting to be escorted to my table, dreaming about all those richly dressed shining ladies and smart stern gentlemen who might have glided down the Italian and Norwegian marble floors many years ago. History fascinates me no doubt.(Now its all wood flooring). It is not the1900's, and it's a weekday night in Downtown, you don't really expect it to be swarming with people, so we got the table really quick. Interior is simple, tasteful and ofcourse clean. The ceiling is pretty high and if you are used to the modern loft style then this will capture your attention. Coming to the food, we got ourselves a butternut squash soup, soo tasty, I could have eaten just that as dinner. Then we got the red salad, which was roasted peppers, beats, pomogranate, and honey. Very refreshing, again very tasty. For the entree we got the custom made veg pasta in pesto sauce. The quantities were not really Texan and that was perfect to keep my food inspiration going in the right direction. One disappointment, the pasta did Not come with bread, we requested and got some but that took forever. To end with, we got the Bourbon Bread Pudding, am not a fan of bourbon(Uh true!), so my partner got to enjoy it all by himself ! Well, happy for him! The restaurant does have vegan options, but with not a huge crowd around, vegetarian vegan dishes take slightly more time than the others to come out of the kitchen. It was a lovely dinner overall. Eda was super sweet and did many trips to accommodate our dietary restrictions, so

    Fantastic hotel. A special call out to Megan, who checked us in. She is the manager and has been there for 6 months. After hearing that we came from a funeral, she upgraded us to the VP suite, which gave us access to the concierge floor. She also called to see how things were going and offered to assist in any way possible. The suite was unbelievable. It had a dining room, full kitchen with Miele appliances, living room, sitting room, king bed, hall bath and main bathroom with shower and separate bath tub. The fridge was filled with water. Ice was stored in prefilled bags in the hallway. The room was very nicely decorated. The breakfast in the lounge was great. Included smoked salmon, eggs, bacon, fresh juices, fresh fruit, oatmeal, bagels, and pastries. Alcoholic drinks are available at night during the week. We had access to soft drinks and coffee/tea at night. Best hotel gym that I have ever seen for Nautilus equipment. Also had plenty of cardio equipment and any accessory you could ask for. Restaurant offered a complete breakfast menu. We ate there for lunch. Valet is 50 dollars with in/out privileges. You can get to underground tunnels from the lobby. We were unable to go there since it was closed on Sunday. Overall the service was exceptional. The staff was very friendly and eager to help in anyway possible. This included the valets, front desk, and concierge room employees.

    I have a couple experiences here. I have stayed here before for events that I have went to downtown and the rooms are nice and clean, room service and staff were great but the spa is heavily overpriced. Would not recommend going to the spa. They don't offer anything a normal spa wouldn't offer. JW also supports animals which give them extra points in my book. They put on this puppy yoga with houston pets alive and it was sooooo cute and fun. They had a bunch of adoptable puppy's, food, raffles and snacks along with merch to buy. It was such a cute event. I hope they do it again soon cause i will be back if so!!

    This JW property looks great when you approach it from the outside. Once you step inside, it's just as great. The lobby is attractive and feels luxurious. The unique interior design flows through each floor and even into your own room. The elevators feel like they are old and need some work. I also didn't like how there isn't even a small shop here. I had to go across the street to the AC hotel to buy from their snack shop. Upon arrival after only seeing the lobby, I was sure that this JW would be nicer than the Le Meridien... especially since it cost me more. But after staying here, I think the two properties are closer in quality than I originally thought.

    Overall a great visit here. Service is great and room service was super fast. Portions were good and taste was above average. Wish the avocado toast had more flavor. Our room was better than average, a little dated/staid, but I feel like this hotel caters to business types. The important thing was bed was comfy, linens were cool and silky and it was relatively quiet for being downtown and close to MM Park. We were on the 7th floor and I heard regular noisy car sounds and the occasional tooting from the rail system. Earplugs easily masked any noises. The tub was nice; I need a tub! However it was difficult to relax in as it is quite large and deep and I keep floating and popping up. Made it hard to lean back with wine and scroll my phone while soaking. The toiletries were nice, neutral smell and did well for my aging, graying, thin hair. They said "Aromatherapy of London" made in China by Gilcrest and Soames. Overall decent efficacy and fresh smelling. Room was very clean, housekeeping did great. Would stay again. No pool but connected to underground tunnel system which was great when I was trying to get some steps while avoiding the heat. Executive lounge has minimal snacks during the day, mostly sweets, but we did not attend the breakfast or happy hours which were more substantial.

    This is for the restaurant downstairs only; We swung by for breakfast looking for something better quality than what's in the tunnels. They have a full restaurant downstairs and their breakfast menu is akin to something like a Dish Society. Looks decently cooked and tasted average to above average for downtown. Pricing definitely is overpriced compared to locations inside the loop but it is the downtown premium that is added. If you're stuck downtown, it's not a bad option if you want a more upscale spot than your food halls/ tunnel options. Ambiance 4/5 Food 3.5/5 Service 3.5/5

    Nice Hotel in H-Town - Positive Experience I am a loyal Marriott traveler who only stays in Marriott properties. I arrived at around 12:15 PM and I was greeted my smiling desk agent who allowed me check in early. The hotel which is in an old historic building, and it is beautiful. I love the exposed steel beams located in the hallways. The concierge lounge located on the 11th floor has an open floor plan and it is well appointed with ample seating form many guests. There are 4 TVs located throughout the lounge for sports fans to enjoy multiple games or just to relax and unwind. The staff in the concierge lounge is awesome. Breakfast options included a scrambled egg, made to order omelets on weekdays, bacon or sausage, hash browns, variety of pastries and breads, fresh cut fruits, etc). Disappointed that they do not evening snacks or d'oeuvres on Friday and Saturday evenings. I stayed in room 1710 on the 17th floor. Although the room was nice in size, it was not the larger guest room that I reserved and paid for. The windows are double paned to minimize the outside street noise and allows for a good night's sleep. This is by far one of the quietest hotel rooms I've ever stayed in. sleep like a baby. I also like the fact that there was a mini fridge to keep my beer cold. The Houston Metro Rail Central Station Red is located steps from the hotel entrance and the Purple Line is located 2 blocks away. Easy and convenient way to travel to NRG Stadium, Minute Maid Park, the Medical Center, Houston Zoo, and many other downtown attractions. There's also a Starbucks located across the street in the AC Hotel and many other restaurants and eateries located with a 1-mile radius from the hotel. Overall, the JW Marriott Downtown Houston and its staff met my needs, but they did little to exceed my expectations as an Ambassador Elite Member. I was not offered a complimentary upgrade and the hotel does not participate in the Suite Night Rewards Program (I have 5 Suite Night Rewards) making it impossible to request a suite upgrade. Also, I was not given the larger guest room that I reserved. When I returned to the front desk to ask about the larger guest room, the desk employee assured me that all rooms are the same in size and layout, however, I know not's the case.

    Great stay again! This is our third time for a quick weekend stay while attending events at Toyota center. It was hubby's birthday and the staff went the extra mile. They provided us with a great suite (fully equipped w fridge and microwave) and a beautiful large bathroom which I truly wish we had more time to enjoy bc the tub looked so inviting. Everything was clean and there was even a little birthday surprise waiting for us. We enjoyed our late night drinking cocktails at the bar (Karen was great). The valet to the front desk is always so pleasant and quick. Def our go to hotel for our downtown staycations.

    Update: The lobby smell significantly improved by Saturday morning and on Sunday as well. We could tell something was working to mask what we had been smelling in the lobby all week. It was so much better over the weekend! The service also improved as well! Several follow up calls with requests and more of an intimate personal interaction with front desk during daytime hours over the weekend. My sister joined me and she was pleased with the service and fragrance in the lobby. I really wanted to like this hotel but it falls short in so many areas. I regret canceling another reservation to stay here. The bartenders are nice with great service but that's as good as it gets. Upon lobby entry the hotel smells very old similar to an old home or library; it's not welcoming at all. Stinky lobby and unfortunately they also don't use a spray or candles to mask the old building smell. They don't have a minibar nor area to purchase beverages. I wanted a sprite in middle of night and was told only option is the lobby bar which was of course closed or to order room service which was 5.00 plus gratuity plus delivery charge for the 1 sprite. I ended up walking nearby to the AC hotel at 4am to purchase something from their market which the front desk said every night guests walk over looking for items that the JW cannot provide and it's frustrating to them. The room is classic nothing fancy nor special. It's aging and some things need repair. Badly cracked sink bowl in bathroom. TV is also older and has a damaged screen with dots showing through the screen. My room door sometimes doesn't lock when closing the door and exiting. My door was fully closed and unlocked when I returned from downstairs I could twist the handle to push it open it without putting key to the receiver. Deadbolt on door doesn't work either. I am in a room booked for 2 and only have 1 robe and slippers. The AC when on cool makes me stuffy and both nights I've had congested nose in middle of night. The pillows are significantly worn and go flat when laying your head. The train noises are also frustrating but that's something out of their control. The front desk service has been subpar from issues with their system checking in to asking typical questions and follow up. Seems like they just have regular people working the desk vs fully trained staff in hospitality excellence. I was expecting a much more luxurious stay with excellent service and it totally fell short. Only thing "luxury" about it is the granite countertops in the room and robe / slippers; everything else is standard in any hotel. It's a smaller boutique hotel that thrives off of the JW brand name but does not deliver. I'm looking forward to checking out tomorrow and going to stay somewhere nicer for the remainder of my time in Houston.

While I called the hotel to dispute it, the lady did not want to investigate or refund about it. What? I'm a full grown adult calling to dispute about $8 after I deliberately used it? Was I supposed to write down an inventory list of what's within fridge and take pic as a proof? Was I supposed to ask for their agreement prior to using their fridge to store my water? Thats fucking insane. It's not about the price, it's about the fact that I did not consume their drink. If you hate money, come here. 2 stars not 1 star because to be fair, the hotel room is comfortable. Staff is friendly. Well, never again. Extremely disappointed. Manager, if you are reading this, you better look into it and refund my $8. It's not about the $8 it matters, I won't accept a rip off I seldom made bad reviews as you could see my post history but make this make sense

Not once did we feel uneasy (and we live in the Houston area - did a staycation for my husband's birthday). A few years ago, it would be a different story. There are a few homeless in the general area, but they aren't disruptive. We stayed in room 705, complete with a city view. It was quiet and lovely. I wish the rooms had a full-size fridge and cooking area, but for downtown, the suites are just as big as a studio apartment. There's space-themed decor throughout the hotel. I found the valet pricing to be a bit steep, and unfortunately, I have reason to believe two pairs of sunglasses were stolen from my vehicle. (I realize they should have been put in my purse immediately after use, but it slipped my mind, and out of habit, I put them in the console.) Regardless, it's frustrating. It also took 10-15 minutes for valet to pull our car around, so that's something to keep in mind. The evening reception was nice, especially with the two drinks/person/night. We had chips and queso, though they had a few other offerings. Make sure you get the card at the front desk. The front desk staff will also try to sell you on destinations for a cheap rate. I'm not sure when this became a thing, but instead of telling us about the evening reception and breakfast, they tried selling us on a stay in Chicago. I really just wanted to go to our room since I did everything on the app. We also found the breakfast to be worth every penny to stay in this hotel. I can't have gluten, and there isn't any GF bread. I had eggs, potatoes, grits, and coffee. There were cereal, fruit, yogurt, and waffle-making options as well. I appreciated the coffee bar having various syrups. The hotel was extremely accessible for those with disabilities/handicaps. We saw several people in wheelchairs or with assistance. Hearsay on the Green is inside the hotel, and the food is priced well for what you get (and it's excellent). If you DoorDash, the Dasher has to leave your food/items at the front desk. They are not permitted to go up to guest rooms. The rooftop pool and hot tub offer views of the city and Toyota Center (excellent people watching). Overall, I'd stay again (but I'd ensure I brought my cheap sunglasses and not my Maui Jims).

And while the whole experience will hit your wallet, it is worth it. Let's face it, you're staying here because of either the convenience of the lovely restaurants connected to the hotel or because of the rooftop pool with the Texas-shaped lazy river. Fortunately, both of these factors live up to it's promise and glamour. The restaurant options are aplenty; all that connect to the hotel lobby. Prestigious options such as Xochi, Biggio's, and Walker Street Kitchen are all here. Xochi is the only one we visited during out time there and it's well worth the experience (see my review on that). The rooftop pool has several seating/lounge sections along with a full bar/restaurant at the front area. Additionally, there is a hot tub and a pool on the left side where you get a nice view of the Houston skyline and the Texas-shaped lazy river floats around all of these attractions. It's the main reason why you're coming to this hotel in the first place! Other amenities I liked is the very large fancy exercise room and the club area where they serve complimentary breakfast for platinum and titanium members. The breakfast has some delicious items including fresh pastries, charcuterie selections, and the scrambled cheese eggs. And there's a cappuccino machine included if you want something more fancy than coffee. All these things I've listed and I haven't gotten to our room! Well we had a clean king sized bedroom that directly overlooked the rooftop pool giving us a nice view of what we would be engaging in during the afternoon. The room also has a safe in the closet if you want to store any valuables. As I mentioned, it's gonna be pricey staying here with all the perks I listed. But would I do it again? HELL YEAH!

Most of the chairs were reserved, and the remaining ones were either occupied or being used by day-pass guests. For a hotel that promotes its resort-style amenities, there simply isn't enough seating to accommodate everyone. The hotel seems to have lost sight of the guest experience. There also wasn't enough staff to manage the long lines throughout the property. Curry at the front desk was friendly and professional during both check-in and check-out, and I truly appreciated the great customer service. Unfortunately, some of the other staff members came across as if they disliked their jobs and interacting with guests. Our valet attendant upon arrival also seemed hostile. The lobby is beautiful, but the guest rooms and restrooms feel dated, especially considering the price point. The mandatory $25 daily resort fee is only applied as a dining credit at the on-site restaurants, which may not be valuable to every guest. On our first night, the shower leaked, and the hotel accommodated us by moving us to another room. They also provided a complimentary cheesecake, although it was stale. The towels were rough, and the robe and slippers felt cheap and disappointing for a hotel at this price point. Overall, there are better hotel options in the area that offer a more enjoyable experience and better value for the money.

There was a lot of open space in addition to the king bed and the living room area. Even though it was February, it was actually quite warm and humid inside the room. We had recently experienced temperatures in the teens in Dallas, so being in a room with the temperature in the mid 70s, seemed unbearably hot. We had to find the A/C and turn the temperature down a few degrees. The hotel is located near the arts district where we were planning to spend our Saturday. The earliest we could checkin was 3pm, so we spent our day visiting the city and just left our luggage in the car. Checkin was super easy since we already had a reservation. Parking was included. The property has a fence around it, so the parking felt relatively secure. It was also well lit. The spots in the front were mostly taken, but you could drive around to the back of the building and easily find a space. The hotel has an elevator, but it is very slow. We used the stairs quite a bit, but found the elevator useful for carrying our bags upstairs. The view was limited and not very appealing, but the building only has about three floors. Amenities like a pool, gym, and laundry facility were also available at no added charge. The Wifi name and password were printed on the room key to make it easy to connect. Breakfast was included. The breakfast area had several tables. the meal is buffet style. They do have hot items like scrambled eggs, sausage, and breakfast tacos. You can make a waffle or toast bread or a bagel. Cold items like juice, yogurt, cereal are also an option. Two staff members were there making sure food was readily available and that things were kept clean. There were a few items that bothered me about this particular hotel. One, there was no TV reception in my room. I couldn't believe there weren't any channels, not even local channels! I was also annoyed that the bathroom sink was not draining properly. My husband had to play with it to get it to drain at all, and even then, it took a very long time for the water in the sink to empty after washing my hands or brushing my teeth. Lastly, the light switch at the entrance of the room only controlled the lighting in the entryway. I had to go around and turn on individual lights to feel like it wasn't so dark. These were minor inconveniences, but for the price, I would have expected these not to be an issue at all. The staff at the front desk were very pleasant and went out of their way to help me. The rooms are very small, the furniture is old and the icebox and microwave are not up to par at this price point. The bathroom is VERYYYY small! Book elsewhere like I said not worth it. Right next door is a bar it's loud at night. I asked my company to remove them from the list! Will never stay here again.

I would say the decor is very old fashion lounge with there being a mix of table with chairs or chairs paired with a couch. Our server seemed very nice but a bit new as she could not tell me if one of the teas was decaf right away. Also, I made a note that I could not have tuna but they took this as I could not have fish so they gave me two chicken salad sandwiches instead of the salmon even though I had stated on the phone salmon was fine. She also could not describe one of the desserts but overall she was very pleasant. The amuse bouche was - interesting ( a strawberry with cream cheese) I didn't hate or love it. I didn't think the cream cheese added anything tbh. We had one dessert on the table waiting for us before we said down - a English parfait that had a white chocolate mouse, cake, and fruit. I loved it although it was a bit strange to have dessert already sitting at your table before you got your sandwiches but I am a dessert first girl so didn't matter to me other than it was constantly calling my name. You don't get to choose your tea and the two tea options are both black which is a lot of caffeine. The sandwiches themselves come across as unassuming but they are great and very filling. Each one has a different bread which was cool. Although not a fan of cucumber, the bread was milky and so soft. All the sandwiches were fantastic. Honestly, I was so full from the tea and sandwiches, I took the desserts home. One big misstep in service was the server forgetting to serve the second tea. I had to ask for it and by the time we got it, we were tea'ed out. You are gifted a box of macarons at the end - we almost left ours but our server ran and got us in time. I definitely had a great time, there were small incidents that stopped it from being 5 stars. Paying 79 dollars for tea is a bit pricy so I would expect a bit more precision and maybe more choice in tea?

    The Thompson is still a great place to stay on our second visit. It is billed as a "luxury…read moreboutique" hotel and generally lives up to its reputation. The room, amenities, and staff are all excellent, but the dining/service is not great. As for the most important points for any hotel, the room basics were all very good. The mattress was good quality and not worn so that it did not hurt our backs. The water pressure and temperature on a higher floor were both good. It was relatively quiet most of our stay so that we could sleep. As for the amenities, the hotel has a nice gym comparable to gyms in other nice hotels. There is access to the external gym on their property, but we would recommend just using the hotel gym as it is adequate for most people and more private and less crowded. The hotel provides a complimentary car service (tip the driver a few buck cash) up to 3 miles from the hotel. There is a beautiful rooftop pool and deck and a Helipad. Not sure if there is a self parking option, but valet parking was $60 a day on our visit (4-2026). The staff are all very friendly and mostly efficient at their jobs. One quirk of this hotel (common at similar boutique hotels) is that the lobby is on the 7th and not the 1st floor. While this is a nice security feature, you must go up to the 7th floor, exit the back of the elevator, and cross the lobby to a second set of elevators and use your key card to ONLY access you floor every time you come and go. We started exiting at the 6th floor at the gym level to avoid the traffic and staff in the lobby. Our only complaint on this visit is the dining. The main restaurant, Sol 7, was not open on our previous visit, but was this time. Online ordering was not available using the QR code in the room. When calling the number on the room service website, we were transferred to the main operator who then transferred us to room service who never answered. We had to go down to the restaurant to place a togo order in person, then go back to our room for 20 min before returning to the lobby to get our food togo-we are glad we did not order deliver to the room as we fear how long that would have taken. The next day we went to Sol 7 to eat. While they were not busy and the server was very nice, still the service was very slow. The food quality for both takeout and dine in was good and the prices comparable to those in the area. As for other dining issues, the Maven Coffee shop was extremely disappointing (see our separate Yelp review for more details). The service there was lacking, numerous menu items were missing, and the quality was not good. We were not impressed with the Taco Madera restaurant near the hotel/on their lot on our previous visit (see our Yelp review for them). There are just far better dining options outside the hotel property in nearby midtown and other nearby parts of downtown. Some are walkable in the daytime if it is not too hot and you are wiling to walk 10-15 min, others you need a ride share, but it is worth it for better dining--do not walk at night as it is NOT safe despite what others may tell you. Overall, the Thompson is still a 5 star property and a good choice for a business trip like we are on when we visit, a staycation as they advertise, or a luxurious vacation. They are definitely worth a try.

In any case, the hotel is stunning if a little unusual. Definitely aiming for avant-garde and unique, and the visuals of the lighting on the Houston skyline are instantly recognizable for miles in any direction. I would give it a solid 4 or even 5 despite the pricing, except for two things. Firstly, I've had the same Valet issues as Ema P, and others. They are hyper-aggressive and shady-on-purpose, that describes a lot of Valet companies in Houston, but if you want to be a high end hotel, you need high end Valet, not The Thievery Corporation. Secondly, certain front desk and hotel staff have been nice to us, but at least 2 of them (and I can pick them out of a line up) have been some of the most abrasive, confrontational hotel staff, even in the middle of the night when nothing was happening and there was no major stress or hurry. Just them texting, followed by them abusing both of us. If not for the nice ones (and there are a few of those too), I would have gone all the way down to 1 star.
