I've often seen bicyclists and runners here. This park feels pretty safe and convenient for little kids. Gaston park is surrounded on three sides by the woods which is also scenic. The last side is the parking lot, which is a pretty good distance from the playground equipment, and the road, which is really far away. This park does not have picnic tables or restrooms.

Today I took my kids through the trails in the park for the first time in over a decade and was nearly aghast at how much canopy the city has removed. It appears the 2019 creek stabilization project nearly ruined the pristine beauty of this park. I've attached satellite images of the park before and after the stabilization project, and you can see just how much canopy the city removed as part of the renovations. They have replaced what was a beautiful, rugged, meandering set of trails with a nearly straight shot through the park on the north edge, decimating the canopy in the process all for a boring, uninventive gravel path. It seems reasonable to expect that some amount of foliage would have to be cut back as part of the creek stabilization process, but what I'm seeing today seems excessive and like it was a stylistic choice to provide an inoffensive, plain suburban walking path through the park as part of the renovations. That would be fine if it hadn't nearly ruined the rugged, dense foliage that made the original trails and creek area an unheralded gem of Coppell. The good news is Hunterwood Park is undaunted and, despite the neutering, is still a great oasis in Coppell. I do fear for the upcoming additional stabilization efforts, though, and what some middle-management parks department bureaucrat might do to strip this park of its remaining majesty.

A central feature is the park's paved jogging trails, which includes a model airplane flying center, and the city's recycling center and even a dog park, at the extreme end of the system. The city's Police Department features great officers who can help via 911 Phone Calls, 24/7. Fortunately for the residents who live close by, response times are prioritized by the severity of the situation and the need for urgent assistance. Denton, Texas is going to grow with respect to the Dallas, Fort Worth, and Arlington area by virtue of the local attractions offered to the voting public's attention to the very positive thing that green spaces offer to the people. It wasn't too big but still had a couple of slides that she has to work to get herself up to the top. They have little pebbles so it kind of made it hard for her to run super fast - which was also nice. Out for a speed walk, I was delighted that there is a gravel/dirt trail along the cement trail which serves as a good shock absorption and is a bit easier on joints than cement. I was surprised by the crowds here on my first visit in early June 2020 during the pandemic--especially mixed groups of young people playing sports--the music was pumping and the vibes were positive. The flower freak in me was delighted to see an orange and red-colored, tropical milkweed I had not yet seen in Texas as well as to sniff some fragrant jasmine! While I prefer Andrew Brown Park East, the West Side is also beautiful and nicely maintained with great restroom and athletic fields.

We have not had a chance to walk the trails yet, so I will have to update my review once we do. In regards to the playgrounds, one is a small little structure near the baseball fields and the other is a large, spread out structure that can be accessed through the second entrance into the park (NOT S Field Dr.). The playground has a small fence that runs nearly fully around it, with openings for entering and exiting. There is plenty to do, including lots of "spinney things" that my kids love. The design of the structure itself is top notch. Bark bottom. Benches are situated within the fence, circling the playground or parents can sit under the covered pavilion behind the playground. The park is beautiful and the playground is fun, but there are two negatives: 1. Lack of shade 2. Bathrooms far away from playground The play structure has limited shade covering the slide areas, which probably help to keep the equipment from getting burning hot, but there is no shade otherwise. I hope the trees they planted around the playground will grow into massive shade trees, but for now they aren't doing a thing. The bathroom is far from the playground. It's a long walk for little legs, and some parents might not feel comfortable leaving their little kids on the playground for a quick run to the bathroom, because it's not really that quick. Also, when I went, there were allllllll kinds of cicadas in the bathroom: swimming in the toilet and crawling all over the sinks. LOTS. I haven't lived in Texas long and am new to Cicadas, so I can't say if this is a sign of poor sanitation or just par for the course, but I thought it was worth noting.
