This was probably the best dining experience that I have had in a long time. We decided quite randomly to visit this restaurant to try Afghan food. And I am so glad we decided to try it! :) We went around 4.30pm and got seated right away. We initially thought about ordering Bulanee and then went back to our waitor to change our order to a soup. He knew it was our first visit so he decided give us two different soups on the house. So we got Tomato Lentil and Aush-Rishta soups with bread. We really enjoyed the soups but I preferred Aush-Rishta more than the Lentil soup. Our waitor came back to warn us that more food is coming so not to eat the bread! (I was so glad he warned because we got so much food!!!) A minute later, we got Bulanee with Yogurt mint sauce and it was delicious. I would so love to have this Bulanee on a cold/rainy day with a good cup of chai. It was absolutely divine but again we decided not to finish it so we can have some appetite for entree. For our entree, we got the vegetarian sample platter and Aushak (Afghan Ravioli). Again it was amazingly delicious. It had a little bit of extra oil but tasted amazing. The platter came with eggplant, spinach, pumpkin and cauliflower - along with some spicy Afghan rice. My husband cleaned his plate and finished the pumpkin dish as well. He loved it so much. A friend of mine recommended this place as a nice diversion from the everyday. I was game as I've never had Afghan food before. We went a little before 5pm. It was just before the dinner crowd so not a lot of folks. The host greeted us promptly and we had a great seat by the windows. Overall I was really impressed with the layout. Everything look nice and modern, the space very inviting. The service was outstanding. For the appetizer we split the Mantoo. I'm really not a dumpling person but I found these flavorful. I would order these as an entree alone. I equally enjoyed the main dish, their national dish of Kabuli Palau. Again the combination of the lamb, rice, carrots, raisins, and seasonings were tasty. We ended the evening with the Walnut Baklawa. I love the flaky, nutty sweetness of the dessert. They have a few more desserts I would definitely like to try down the line. By the time dessert rolled by, the dinner crowd began to dominate. Quite a few folks were waiting for tables to open up. So Kabul House definitely is on the buzz cloud. I don't know why so many people rave about this place. Maybe I am just not a fan of Mediterranean food. It is a nice interesting restaurant, it kinda tries to be a fancy 4-star restaurant but it just seems like a tacky place. Although they have really good service but the price is a bit on the higher end for what they serve. I mean if I go to Hub's I feel like I get a more authentic and better priced meal than this. Maybe you just come here for the fancy experience but it is not even that great. I do not generally leave a bad review but there really is nothing special about this place. read more

This place hit the spot on Afghani food. I missed it so much and ZOMG did they deliver! First off, their chutney (green sauce) is a must. So don't forget to get a side of that. Rice - In order, we preferred the Dill Rice, Afghani Rice, Saffron/Plain Rice Bread - Ask for a fresh basket. Yummy. Mantoo - Comfort food for sure. I was a fan. Bouranee Banjan - I love Afghani eggplant, so I was a also a fan of this dish. My husband didn't care for it as much. Koubideh - Pretty darn good. Enough to hit the spot. Murgh - UNBELIEVEABLE! I've never had better better chicken in my life. NO JOKE. Service - The times we've visited, everyone is welcoming and so kind. By far one of the best restaurants that I've eaten at. The food is on a different level. Too much goodness. The restaurant serves Afghani food which I find to be a fantastic fusion of Pakistani/Indian and Mediterranean food. The food Is not too spicy and not bland. Very flavorful. I have tried the mantoo, vegetarian platter, bolanee, chicken murgh (best chicken I've had) and koubideh. Everything tasted amazing. Definitely recommend for halal foodie people out there. Was visiting family for the Thanksgiving holiday. Went here for lunch with family for the first time. The restaurant itself is clean and nice. There were 11 of us in the group - we made reservations. It's not too loud, which is nice so we could hear conversations at either end of the table. Our server was great. Answered any and all questions we had. The food though... YUM!!! We had vegetarian dolmas and aushaks for appetizers. Both dishes were so good. The topping on the aushaks were just as tasty as the "ravioli" portion - we cleaned every last drop off the plate I had the Kabuli Palau - which was the most tender lamb I've ever had. It was served underneath a pile of "Afghan rice" with caramelized carrots and raisins. I'm not a fan of raisins and thought it might taste weird with the dish, but it was actually quite the opposite. The sweetness of the carrots and raisins complimented the "saltiness" of the lamb perfectly (not that it was salty - it was perfectly seasoned). I'm also not a big fan of rice, but everything was SO good, I ate all my rice and took some of my mom's too . The portion was very generous - as much as I wanted to finish everything on the plate, I just couldn't and took the rest home. 2 of my kids shared a chicken kabob plate. Without asking our waiter to, he had the kitchen staff split the dish before it was even brought out to our table. The kids loved the chicken and ate every bit of it. My 7yo had the barg kabob. I wasn't sure how he would like it, but he gobbled up all of the kabob as well. (I had a few small bites of the barg, and it was quite tasty!) My husband had the Mahi Mahi kabob - something I've never seen on the Mediterranean restaurant menus before. Our table also ordered the Lamb Shanks, Chicken Qorma and a few other dishes. EVERYTHING was delicious! We didn't have any complaints! For dessert, I was impressed that they brought out a dessert tray instead of just a menu. We tried almost everything - raspberry & chocolate mousse, baklava, Firnee, and tres leches cake. The kids devoured the mousse. I tried the Firnee (never had it before) and thought it was delicious! I also tried the tres leches cake but it was a little too sweet for my liking. After all was said and done, our waiter reminded us that he forgot to give us our soup (apparently, that day, they were giving soup with each entree - he mentioned it to us before we ordered, none of us though actually remembered). We waited a few minutes and he brought out 3 huge containers of tomato lentil soup and extra bread for us to take home - enough to serve 10-11 people! We thought that was really nice of him - he didn't have to even mention it again since none of us remembered. Highly recommend Kabul House! Great food, great service, great atmosphere, and decent prices. I wish they had one of these in Houston - we'd be eating Mediterranean more often . I went there for the first time today. I checked the reviews and saw some recommendations. The lentil soup came with any order of the entree. Some people have said that it was great, but it wasn't really that tasty to me. It was eatable. I ordered Mantoo, beef dumplings i guess. And yesss, it was really delicious. I loved it. My friend order Kabuli Palau, lamb with rice. Hmmm it wasn't really really good but it wasn't bad either. The rice was a bit sweet. Anyway, I was happy with Mantoo. The lunch special is the best thing to happen in Skokie since Pita Inn's! I got the lamb kebab - it was delicious and exotic but still approachable. The seasoned rice was just okay. The menu said it came with vegetables ... but there was only half a tomato so that was a bit of a disappointment. The lentil soup that was part of the special was excellent. We came here before heading over to the Gorilla Tango Theater to see our friend in a show. I didn't know much about Kabul House, other than the fact that it had good reviews (although duh, I now see that Antaash U. has been here). From the moment we walked in we received excellent service and attention. This is a very inviting restaurant and everyone wants to make sure you have a great time. We started with a delicious meat-ravioli type appetizer. It was delicious. I had lentil soup (my meal came with it) and it was delicious. I ordered the murgh kabob for my entree and while it wasn't anything amazing, it was delicious. We also ordered a dessert that was almost like a pudding. It was different and I'm glad we tried it, but it wasn't something I'd order again. I would definiltey make the drive up to Skokie to come back here, it was such a great dining experience and there are so many other items on the menu I need to try! PS- it is BYOB! read more

For several years now I've found myself driving the distance to eat at Kabul. I don't live in Skokie but will gladly make the trek when I get the urge. It's worth the drive people. Try it, you won't be disappointed. Their food is stellar. From the hot tea with cardamom to the rose water/pistachio custard, and everything in between! Their chicken is some of the most tender chicken anywhere. Service is great and the decor is fab. Everything I've tried there is brilliant. The flavor profile of each dish is wonderfully thought out. A total treat to the senses. The only gripe I have is that it's often cold inside due to the amount windows. If they could just turn up the heat a few degrees I'd probably never want to leave. I could conceivably eat myself into a coma. Great food. Absolutely worth the drive. But don't go there on Mondays. You'll be sad to seed the closed sign on the door. read more

We were visiting out of town and found out about those restaurant from muslimeater.com There was quite a bit of await as the place was quite busy. After awhile we were shown to our table, the decor was quite moderate. The service was very prompt and fast. The food was amazing we had the kabuli pilau the meat was very tender maybe a bit more meat though. Lentil soup and ash were very tasty tasted quite similarly except the ash had noodles. The appetizer was really tasty. We orders the chicken kebab it was really soft and tender was amazing with the side salad. The service was again exceptional especially the waiter David was really accommodating especially as we had a 13 month old toddler with us. I had my first experience with Afghan food yesterday, and it was quite a delicious one. Going off the reviews I figured Kabul House was worth a visit, and it was. Ordered the murgh, koubideh, and mantoo. The murgh was seasoned deliciously and was very juicy and tender. The best dish amongst the three that I had ordered. The koubideh was pretty good as well, perfectly cooked with just a hint of pink the center. As for the mantoo, it was tasty, but I would personally skip on it next time. The rice that accompanied the murgh and koubideh was delicious. It has carrots and raisins in it, so if you're one of the people who doesn't like raisins, it might not be your thing. Prices and portions were just right. I had food leftover and didn't hurt my wallet. Will definitely be coming back in the future. read more

I went here for the first time this past weekend and had a great dining experience. First off, the restaurant is decorated very elegantly which creates a nice ambiance especially at night. The wait staff was very attentive, something that is sadly lacking in many of the Afghan restaurants I've been to. Now onto the food. I had the chicken kebab with brown rice and shared a side of mantu. I've heard many great things about the kebab here and I have to say, I was not disappointed. It's seasoned in a way that distances itself from other establishments. VERY GOOD. The rice was soft and full of flavor. I'm not a huge fan of mantu, but the dish here was very tasty. It's definitely a good appetizer, especially for newcomers to this type of food. The rest of the menu looked very delicious. I look forward to going back and trying it. We ordered an appetizer of mantoo, which by the way are scrumptious little ground beef dumplings that were perfectly Al dente. For our entrées we ordered two murgh (blended spiced chicken kabobs) dinners with half dill & half afghan rice. The flavor of the murgh are amazing & the juices just flowed out when I cut into it. One of the worst dining encounters I have ever experienced. Waited over an hour and fifteen minutes for our entrees. The table next to us was sat down after we arrived, was fed 3 courses and had their food packaged in "to go" cartons during which our waiter apologized for delay but never offered us a single complementary item. We finally got up and left without ever seeing our entree. This was so disappointing. Even as we paid for our appetizers and walked out the door at 1.5 after arriving, they still could not offer us a time as to when our dinner would be ready and no explanation for the delay. I have to admit, I was incredibly surprised when the hostess took our $30 for two appetizers and tea, and didn't offer to comp the meal. The one appetizer my wife ordered was an overly sweetened squash dish that was more like pumpkin filling and tasted like dessert. My salad was a boring apple, raisin, and blue cheese salad with minimal greens and a boring balsamic vinaigrette. Hardly what you would call an Afghan culinary delight. We ended up leaving and having to go to another nearby restaurant that treated us like patrons rather than peasants. One word, DELICIOUS! As stated in my previous reviews I was born and raised in Iran and very particular with my Middle Eastern cuisine, I come from a long line of amazing cooks, one being my mom! I finally tried Kabul House and ordered take out. My order consisted of Hummus, Mantoo, salad, Beef Koobideh and Chicken Koobideh. Everything was amazing, I loved the flavors, the colors, the taste, it was perfect. I have driven by often since they moved to this location. On a whim, I stopped for carryout on a cold snowy Chicago night. I am glad I did. Good easy parking Clean spacious dining room (glass walls probably made it chilly for the diners but the part near the pastry display was cozy) The food was really good. I had the bolanee (sp?) appetizer and the spiced squash/pumpkin to go as appetizer and the vegetarian quorma ( stew) with the basmati rice and shaved carrots and raisins (Basmati palau, I think) It was well seasoned but not overwhelming. There were enough sauces in the "to-go" packet- especially the minted yogurt. Bonus- it reheats well for Sunday leftovers. My husband is a well-done steak type person and he liked it enough to ask if it was local. Here's hoping. If not him, certainly I'll go back I can't give an opinion on service because I got carry out. Also, although it wasn'r germane to me, I think they are BYOB. If that makes a difference to you, ask.
