I am a Big for Colorado Big Brothers Big Sisters and I took my Little to see Dr. Jen. She was a bit nervous and didn't know what to expect. Dr. Jen and her assistant took the time to explain everything they were doing and even let my Little touch the tools and hold the vacuum. Unfortunately, she had a cavity. She doesn't like if strangers look at or talk to her, and she is very resistant to even the most charming of people. When I made the appointment here I said "I don't see a world where she's going to let you look in her mouth but we can certainly try". Boy, was I wrong! Walking in the colorful waiting room, with Despicable Me playing, immediately put my baby at ease. She watched the movie and enjoyed naming the colors of all of the chairs. When the hygienist called us back, her demeanor was so friendly and fun that my daughter thawed towards her more than she does most. She let my baby play with all of the tools we would be using which calmed her down and also made her less afraid of them once they were actually in use. When the dentist came out she was equally as friendly and informative, and had a relaxed nature that I really appreciated. My daughter let her, and the hygienist, do whatever they wanted! They were so quick and efficient, and seemed to appreciate that if they spent too much time on her my daughter would start a revolt. We were in and out in 20 minutes with nice, clean teeth! My 14 y.o. daughter has autism and cerebral palsy and for years I had to lay under her and hold her down at the dentist. The first time with Dr. Shah I didn't even have to hold her hand. That first visit Dr. Shah scheduled her over the lunch hour so no other patients would be there and she could focus on her without having anything to distract my daughter. She did the cleaning herself and had extreme patience with my daughter, gave her breaks, and was just amazing. My daughter is non-verbal and wrote about how much she liked it. Every other experience has been wonderful and the visits prepared by daughter for orthodontic work and hugely built up her trust. Dr. Shah many times answers the phone, is available via e-mail, and always calls to follow up on any issues. My son had a big infection in his gums related to his wisdom teeth eruption. Dr. Shah called the next day to check on him and to see how his emergency visit to an oral surgeon went (instead of waiting to hear from the surgeon herself). She is extremely caring, patient, and knowledgeable. I highly recommend her for ANY special needs child. She totally "gets" them. She remembers patients in great detail, too. They love her calling them "sweet child". :-) The schedule is usually very open, too. Changes can be made easily, which is something I have to do at times given my daughter's medical needs.
