Googlwle maps directed me here because apparently the border crossings in Detroit and Port Huron were backed up Friday afternoon. I thought there was a bridge here. Imagine my surprise when I saw it was a ferry. I just missed the boat as it was just pulling away from the dock. The US border agent thought that the ferry captain might actually turn around to pick me up. Alas that didn't happen. I asked the US border agent when it would be coming back. He said it comes back as soon as they load up on the other side. So I decided to wait (I was first in line after all.). I grabbed a seat in one of the numerous Adirondack chairs along the river and just enjoyed the cool breeze and took in the view of the river. It was about 45 minutes 1 before the ferry came back, unloaded, and reloaded with vehicles on the us side. You never get out of your car the whole time. You pay the ferry an when he comes up to your car window whole bat sea. $12 cash or charge. On the Canadian side, you drive off the boat and are greeted by one of the 6 or so Canadian border agents. You present your passport (or passport card in my case), they ask you a few questions and you're on your way. The whole experience is quite pleasant. Unlike crossing in Detroit, you're not stick in bumper-to-bumper traffic for an hour idling and inhaling fumes. You can scrotal get up and walk around before boarding the ferry. The trip itself only takes about 10 minutes. The only downside is that you have to pay and there is no duty-free shop. Totally worth it.

First off, it's very bare bones. I guess I expected kind of a nice little dock area or something a bit more picturesque but it's very industrial. That's not really that big a deal given it's more of a utility service than some sort of pleasure cruise but it's definitely not a photo op. Mostly dirt, chains, and some construction machinery (so perhaps they're doing work on the area?) They ferry itself is also very unassuming and fits about 9 cars, less if there's a truck or a trailer. My first ride over I was situated next to a small semi and behind me in line was someone towing some jetskis so it seems like they'll take a variety of vehicles over. I was visiting over Memorial Day so the wait was a bit on the longer side but it was also cold and rainy so I think it wasn't quite as bad as it could have been on a nice weather holiday weekend. My return trip I had no wait at all and drove right onto the boat. Staff is not chatty and pretty much only communicates via hand signals (maybe I caught them on a bad day since it was raining?) which confused me a bit at first since they weren't super clear. But it wasn't a debacle or anything. The trip is about 5 minutes give or take (kind of over before I knew it!) and pretty smooth sailing. On our way out to the island we saw the return boat so they're basically running two at a time, one going each direction, so it's regularly taking new passengers. Round trip is $16, no passes for island residents though you can buy a book of 20 tickets for $200 which knocks it down per ride but still a bit steep so you'll still probably want to be strategic about how you come and go since it all adds up.

This was my first time going to Harsens Island and my first time taking one of my vehicles on a ferry at all. I think maybe my parents took a ferry somewhere during my childhood. I have vague memories that could just be some personal Mandela Effect. Who knows. Point is I don't have much, if anything to compare this to. This isn't exactly the epic ferry journey across Lake Michigan that has intrigued me for a few years and I might one day take. You can easily see Harsens Island from Algonac where Champion's sets out from. Vehicles can stack up in the queue but the voyage, if you can call it that, is very brief and painless. $15 for round trip ain't bad, especially for a monopoly. Seems like they could have just built a bridge by now, but I'm sure CAF hates that idea and it would take away some of the charm of Harsens Island. I went over to Harsens Island on a spring weekday just cause I've lived my whole life in metro Detroit and had never been there. It was only about a ten minute wait to get on the ferry going over. The way back was about 25 minutes as a mechanical issue had temporarily sidelined one of the boats and the vehicles were stacked up. They do have a port o potty, at least on the island, and boy, was that clutch! I didn't look on the mainland just cause it wasn't an issue on the Algonac side. I do wonder stuff like how well does this work for an ambulance if someone on the island has a medical emergency? What if there's a big fire the fire department on the island needs help with? That's neither here nor there, though. Just late night thoughts swirling through the old noggin. My experience on this ferry was decent and pretty unremarkable, especially considering I'm a ferry novice.

The owner of Prior's Plumbing across the street let us park in his lot since it was after hours, and from there it was just a stone's throw from the ferry dock. The ferry runs continuously from 6am to midnight. And I was told by a co-worker after midnight, it comes on the hour. We didn't have to wait long at all and before we knew it we were on board right next to the cars and it's a quick zip on over to Harsen's Island. It can get a little bumpy when the ferry docks so hold on to your bike. I was told we didn't get the friendliest service going there (maybe because bikers ride free and there were a ton of us) and were told to stay to the side to "avoid bloodshed" lol. Our experience with the host Andrew and this rare gem of a property was the best we have ever experienced. We all fell in love with this tucked away little paradise of a home and we will definitely be back! From our initial interactions with Andrew it was clear that he was an exceptional host - warm and caring, as well as incredibly responsive and attentive to the smallest details. Our group of 8 consisted of 4 adults, 2 toddlers, and 2 seniors and from the moment we opened the door we were all instantly enamoured with the house. We arrived to bright afternoon rays beaming into the sunroom and lighting up the large open concept main floor which beckoned all of us over to bask in the warm afternoon light on comfortable couches. And as we continued to settle into the remarkable house we were thrilled with all the details that seemed to anticipate our every desire... the large deck overlooking the river, the luxurious bathrooms, the generous stash of board games and entertainment, the spacious and fully outfitted kitchen complete with a pro waffle iron and complimentary waffle mix, the plush and incredibly comfortable beds, the working fire place... and of course the massive ships slipping by majestic and silent. We had plenty of space to sprawl out on the main floor and each find our own little quiet nook when we wanted one and we all slept wonderfully well even with two toddlers just down the hall from each other. I really cannot say enough about this incredible property and strongly recommend it to anyone - whether you're a large group like us or a couple looking for a romantic retreat - it's an absolutely magical little spot!
