Went here for date night and it didn't disappoint. Our poor waitress was covering the entire restaurant and covering the registers but she did great! Kafe Mamai is a fresh taste of the Caribbean as well as African cuisine. Not only are the flavors and colors of the food fun, the decor inside is bright and cheerful. It's straightforward and no-frills. There is cool art hanging on the walls. It's very laid-back and you can either be served as true dine-in sit-down or order to-go. I love the convenience and flexibility. Last but not least, the food. OMG the food was SO insanely good! We came with high expectations due to the very good reviews, but our minds were still blown. We both got the Surf and Turf and the flavors were absolutely divine. It was not overly salty but was simply really flavorful-- truly the opposite of bland food. Visiting Salt Lake we were looking for some vegetarian food. Kate Mamai looked interesting and we don't have Jamaican restaurants at home. We decided to share the lentil curry and the jerk tofu. Both were really good. The lentils were perfectly seasoned and almost had a creamy texture. The rice was delicious kind of like chai tea spiced. Kafe Mamai takes over the previous location of Boltcutter, situated right in the heart of Gallivan Center. Its exterior looks humble, but it's quite spacious inside with plenty of seating. The menu is simple and offers a variety of African-Caribbean dishes. I tried the lamb curry and the jerk chicken with a side of fufu. The lamb curry was flavorful and the lamb was extremely tender. The jerk chicken was out of this world- its jerk seasoning combined with a hint of citrusy aftertaste created the perfect harmony. This was my first time trying fufu as it's been on my bucket list for a while, it was surprisingly to see that on the menu or anywhere in Utah. Fufu is generally pounded cassava, and Kafe Mamai added its own spin with a bit of nutmeg or cinnamon. Eaten with hands and dipped in the curry was the way to go. The service is great and we stayed until closing. There's so much more to explore from the menu and I can't wait for the restaurant to gain more attention. read more

We randomly chose this for dinner tonight when I was craving something new. The food was amazing! The mango curry was so flavorful and the chicken was well cooked. The rice it comes with has a nice bright flavor. The jerk chicken was so good also. I liked that there was so much skin and lots of flavor. I never love the rice that comes with jerk chicken, no matter the restaurant, but this was better than usual. I stoped by here on my way home and drove all the way to Bountiful and everything was still hot. Not just warm, but hot. That was nice! When I walked in, I was greeted in a very friendly way and asked if i wanted to dine in or take out. If you dine in they will do table service. Since i was taking it home, i ordered at the counter. The young girls were helpful and friendly. Things came out quickly (but not TOO quickly ), and they made sure the to go containers were balanced well in the bag so nothing would fall over in the car. I appreciated the attention to detail. Also, this place is so beautiful! There are so many amazing paintings on the walls. There are super high windows, sort of like a sky light.
