We weren't exactly sure where this was located, but luckily, they have a lot of signs. My husband and I had walked there from our place, but the friends we met up with said the signs for where to park where helpful too. They will validate parking. As soon as you open the door and walk down the stairs, you are taken into a whole new world. The decorations are so vibrant and the building is so cool. We arrived at 1:00 on a Saturday with a group of 7. They said the wait would be 20-30 min, and it ended up being about 25. They have a large waiting room with chairs and couches which was nice. Once we were seated, our waitress greeted us promptly and got our drink orders. We were all catching up and took a while to be ready to order, but she was patient with us while still checking in so we knew she was there. I got Diet Coke to drink. Great brew!! I had the shrimp quesadilla, and it was delicious! Absolutely loved it. I can't remember what everyone got, but all my friends were happy with their meals. Great spot. Great decor. Great food. I'm surprised I've yet to review The Blue, as I've been there many times. This time I was offered a sample of the molés and found a couple that I thought were divine. I ordered the puntas de filet which came with the one I liked best, the mole de almendra. It was incredible. The steak was tender, the mole equally so. My friend ordered tacos that were... tacos, let's be honest. But still very good. My usual order is the enchiladas suizas which shouldn't be missed. I loved being to try the various mole. This is the first time we've been here in a couple of years. We went on a double date with my husband's best friend and his girlfriend, per their suggestion. I love the vibrant colors and lights, as well as the downstairs restaurant area. I'm not sure if I noticed before, but they have beautiful star lanterns, like Parol, in the Philippines. It was pretty busy that night, but our server was great! I ordered the seafood fajitas and ate just about all of it! It was yummy, but I would have liked a little more of a portion of seafood. Never have I seen a pineapple fajitas option at a Mexican restaurant in SLC until finding the Gringas Fajitas option at Blue Iguana. Blew me away in terms of flavor and freshness -- I loved it! One downside and suggestion is that two tortillas for a fajitas platter is far too few to adequately hold fajitas meat + toppings. Would love to see the restaurant provide 3-5 tortillas next time. The service seemed to be average speed, with slightly below average attentiveness -- while our server initially checked in on us after delivering the food, our table ran out of water about halfway through the meal, and our server never came back to refill. So there are a couple of places where Blue Iguana could improve, but the food enough was good enough to return for another visit. read more

We don't live in SLC but we were in the area for a date night. We had gotten a coupon in the mail for a BOGO entree and thought why not? Overall it was quite delicious. This wasn't our first time here, but it has been a few years. The decor is awesome, the staff is incredibly kind and sweet and mindful. The food was delicious and picture perfect. My only notes are more personal... not really criticism of the food. I got three enchiladas, 2 chicken and 1 beef. The beef was divine, and the chicken was also really good but a tad spicier than I would have preferred. My hubs got two tacos, carnitas and carne asada and they were both so delicious. Our meal came with chips and salsa and the salsa was the perfect level of spice. Great for the whole family. I'm happy we came here. They were very busy and seem to do consistently well over the years, and with good reason. They absolutely earn each star, IMHO. read more

Our first visit to Blue Iguana. Great decor, great vibe, very fun and inviting atmosphere. Everyone loved the salsa and guacamole, as well as the drinks. Margaritas are tasty, if a little skimpy under all that ice. Entrees came out quickly and were good for the most part. The seafood enchiladas were not a favorite due to being absolutely drowned in a velveeta like sauce. But still, nothing major to complain about. My one and only big complaint, is the *rice*. First, I appreciate the honesty of the staff. At every Mexican restaurant I ask if the rice and beans are vegetarian. I appreciate being told that they are not rather than finding out after, and going home sick. So, thank you for your honesty. That said, I pointed out that rice is listed on the vegetarian portion of the menu, and asked if it was different. I was told no, that is the only rice they have and it is made with chicken broth/bouillon. All I can say is, how disappointing. You know better. You have 13 entrees that say they are vegetarian, yet are served with chicken broth rice. This is NOT ok. If it's listed under vegetarian, people TRUST that. They trust you to be transparent. I really hope that management takes this to heart and does something about it. read more

Staying Downtown Salt Lake City - I was craving some Mexican food. Found this place nearby so thought to give it try based on some good reviews. The Blue Iguana is tucked back in a corner across from the Hilton- but plenty of sign to point the way. The entrance is pretty cool with a telephone booth like doorway with windows down a flight of blue stairs. Once entering you find a well decorated Mexican Cantina style restaurant with colorful walls and hangings. The seating is wood tables and chairs. We were quickly seated by the hostess. Soon afterwards someone stopped by with a pitcher of ice water with a lemon slice in and poured us each a glass leaving the pitcher on the table. At the same time the server gave us a basket of tortillas and a neat blue dish of some very tasty salsa. It took a few minutes for the server to appear but we're happy with the cold water and delicious chips and salsa while we waited. The place was about 3/4 full and more coming as we were there on the earlier side for the dinner hour around 5 pm. The menu is awesome. All your Tex mex favorites and more! Even the newly popular Molcajetes dish. ( which looked fantastic by the way!). We ordered the regular enchiladas meal with ground beef and a side of sour cream and the Chile Verde Chimichanga. They both came with rice and beans - the chimi had sour cream and guacamole while the enchiladas had a very small salad tucked into the end of the dish. The enchiladas were fabulous - I especially enjoyed the enchilada sauce which was dark,rich , and slightly sweet. The chimi had a little kick to it and was equally yummy. Though it took a few minutes for the server to get our order once he was caught up did an excellent job of making sure we had everything we needed. We also tried a margarita- it was very festive with a lime and little flag- tasted great ! The portion size was big so be hungry!! They do offer desserts if you save enough room ! This is one of my favorite Mexican restaurant in Salt Lake. It is so authentic and I'm a suckered for combination meals. I got a combo with enchilada, taco, and chili relleno and it was fantastic. The place was SLAMMED when we showed up around 9 pm. There was a musician singing, and people tucked into tables all over. Our group of four ended up at a table on an outside alcove about halfway below street level. It was a little tight but the chairs were comfy and the ambiance, cozy. I'd give the service 3.5 stars. Mostly attentive, but not overly friendly. This could be largely the result of the packed restaurant. Food was decent. Salsa was tasty. Chips were warm. A downtown staple, pleasantly busy on a Saturday evening but not overly so. We had a reservation and they sat us promptly, but the wait didn't look too bad. Always nice to know of a few spots you can hit up on a weekend w/o a reservation. We sat out on their patio, which was very pleasant. The AC unit close by was a little loud but not too bad. We could still talk and hear each other. Food is always good. What was a great dining experience 7 years ago was a big disappointment recently as the quality of food had gone downhill for myself and colleague. I ordered the same entree the initial time I came here and the food and presentation was great. My colleagues mole dish which I did not try was terrible and not like other mole dishes that he has had previously at other places. Even our Arnold Palmer drinks were watered down and refills were the same as well. Sadly, I'm checking Blue Iguana off my list of restaurants to go to the next time I'm in SLC. read more

As Texans, we came into Blue Iguana ready to test-drive their margaritas and Mexican food -- and it was definitely a mixed experience. There were four of us, fresh off a walk through downtown SLC in the heat, so we kicked things off with margaritas (as one should): * Mango Margarita - Frozen (not on the rocks), super refreshing and tasty. * Cadillac Margarita - Smooth and solid. * Blue Margarita - Bright, fun, and full of flavor. * Sangria Margarita - Hard pass. It was super sour -- not sweet at all like you'd expect from something labeled "sangria." No one at the table could finish it. Honestly, it tasted more like a citrus vinegar experiment than a cocktail. For food, we ordered fajitas and a molcajete with shrimp, chicken, and beef. My husband tore it all up -- not a scrap left on his plate. The homemade tortillas were fantastic -- warm, fresh, and the best part of the meal. The meat quality? Just okay. Not bad, not great -- kind of forgettable. The biggest downside was the service. Our waiter barely acknowledged us. We were downing water like we'd crossed the desert, and he never offered refills. Plates piled up and he only came by when absolutely necessary -- no check-ins, no small talk, not even a "how's everything?" We felt like an afterthought. We stopped by for dinner tonight and left confused and amused by our experience! From all of the rave reviews we were excited to try this place! We arrived early enough there was little to no wait and were seated right next to the entrance. Ok, no worries, the place is cute! We get our chips, salsa, and menus and we're excited to see the general manager was our waiter! First thing, he places the menus on top of the chips! He took our drink orders and although one was wrong it wasn't enough to complain about but when he gave us the straws he dropped them, yes, onto the chips. What?! The food was ok. We ordered the cheese enchilada, the shrimp quesadilla, chili verde, and the carne asada ala tempiquena. Nothing to rave about and none of us liked it enough to finish any of it. I hate to say it but I was a little disappointed with the steak.... My kind, sweet waitress asked me how I preferred my steak, I asked for my steak medium and unfortunately it came out super welllllllllllll done. Was very dry and hard to cut, chew and swallow. It had very little flavor. I normally would say something because I hate spending money on bad food. But our waitress was so kind and accommodating, for my boyfriend as he cannot eat red meat or tomato's due to his gout; she kept going out of her way to keep coming back to make sure each ingredient in his burrito was safe for him to eat. So, I didn't wanna be that person... My boyfriend got the burrito grande to have some left for his lunch the next day. He said he loved it and appreciated the extra effort our waitress made for us. Overall a neat place, love the tequila table thing you pass by it was so cute! I drove from north Ogden to eat there and would do it again, maybe get something other than the steak. We came here to celebrate a friend's birthday and made reservations in advance since we had a larger group. Once we were seated, it took about 20 minutes before our server came by, which was a bit of a wait. It was a busy Friday night, so we understood, but it still felt a little slow to get started. Once the server came, things picked up! The food and drinks came out pretty quickly, which was a nice surprise. I ordered the enchiladas verdes, and they were good, no complaints there. I also got the Mango-Narita, which was so good. My friends even liked it more than their own drinks! Went there on a Friday evening. The place was surprisingly busy. The hostess wouldn't seat us at our preferred table, claiming it was reserved. I pointed out we had reservations. My wife felt her behavior was rude. We ordered beers. I would have thought they would have brought the beers with chilled glasses, but we had to ask. I ordered the shrimp fajitas; my wife had the poblano platter. The fajitas were flavorless, no seasoning. I never had fajitas with the tails still on. My wife's food all tasted the same. The atmosphere was loud and unpleasant. With so many other great Mexican restaurant's in town, we won't be back. Avoid the blue, try the red instead. read more

If I was a filmmaker, this would very easily be a location where I'd want to make a movie. I'm not sure what it would be about, or who would be cast, but the location would be this restaurant. From the unique covered staircase that leads to the front door to the impeccable colors and the quaint European patio, Blue Iguana is a vibe! Most of us come here to eat, however, which was also the reason for my visit last night. They take reservations, a requirement for our fairly large group, so we happily booked a table and enjoyed a meal before our show a couple blocks away. There's a little waiting room that we sat it for a few minutes while we waited for our table to be ready. It's right by the restrooms. Service was good-I was grateful (and a little surprised) that the server was so willing to do split checks. I expected that they would not be cool with that since our group was a little larger. I enjoyed the shredded beef tacos-although I had to scoop off the cheese. I should have known, but since it wasn't listed on the menu, I erroneously assumed it wouldn't have cheese on them. Next time I'll be sure to ask. My wife had the enchiladas and didn't care for them at all, but it could be personal preference. We agreed that we'd be willing to go again, just made adjustments to our orders. The chips and salsa were pretty good-I especially liked that there were several small containers of salsa, so we didn't all have to share one. We have been in SLC for volleyball tournaments and usually come by here at least once as the food is delicious and we can get reservations for larger tables. The restaurant is nice and the food is delicious. The only reason for three stars is that they are always trying to rush you to eat.
