TL;DR - An authentic Viennese experience. Wandering around the centre of Vienna at night we decided to go and track down a melange (a coffee you'll find all over the place). There were endless places to do so, but most seemed overloaded with tourists. Kaffee Alt Wien is conveniently located close to the centre of town but in a secluded enough location that most tourists don't seem to find it. You enter into the smoking area - head past the bar to find the non-smoking section. The walls are plastered with advertising for plays, bands, and events and despite the time and secluded location it was packed with locals when we arrived. It was hot like any Vienna summer night, but the melange was absolutely wonderful - possibly the best one we had in all our time in Vienna. The one downside to the experience was that the guy behind the counter wasn't the most helpful. I think it may have been the heat but he didn't seem overly keen on helping us! read more

What is up with the clear bathroom stall door in the ladies room?!?! I must have looked so confused standing in the stall trying to figure if it was see through both ways... Another lady totally laughed at me and directed me towards the other stall. Anyway, other than that this place is lovely, well decorated and has a nice beer on tap for a decent price. We ate here when we were in Vienna in 2017 and returned on this trip. We sat in the non-smoking section this time (at the back of the restaurant, need to walk through the smoking area). Café Alt-Wien looks like it should be gloomy and smoky --- but manages to pull "atmospheric" and "tobacco-scented" instead. The front room holds the bar, a few small tables, and some music-postered booths. A handfull of people were smoking, but the smoke-eater in the ceiling was keeping up handily. The back room is a little fancier, with mostly four-person tables and less smoke. Decaf fans: You can get your anaemic fix here --- unlike Cafe Hawelka, this place stocks unleaded. read more

Great value for the money. Wiener schnitzel here is pretty decent and large portion for less than 10 euros. Goulash was okay -- more of a snack place. The interior of the place itself looks kind of dingy, but the bathrooms are ridiculously nice and modern! Definitely check them out -- you'll have an Alice in Wonderland moment where you feel like you're in a different world entirely. This is a very intimate cafe, no crowd. Walls are plastered with concert and exhibition posters. There is a smoking room and a nonsmoking room separated by an automatic door. The cafe serves regular food, but is known for strudels. My strudel was excellent and the coffee good. Service is friendly. The only reason to give 4 stars is due to smoke still getting in to the non smoking part despite of the door. But as a result, heaven for smokers. read more

Cafe Alt Wien is the quintessential Viennese cool cafe/pub/hangout. It's a great place to check out if you are visiting Vienna for a slice of local culture. Of course the wine and beer are great .... you can't go wrong with Austrian wine. There's some great food to pick from - I always like the soup. And the walls are filled with cool art and movie posters. It's located on a small back street in the old inner city of vienna. There's nothing pretentious about it. Here you can find one of the meantime unfortunately rare really viennese cafes. its not very very old but its still very traditional with its walls full of posters and the charme of the old days in Vienna. For me as a "zuagraste" (moved here person from the countryside) it represents to viennese soulof laissez fair and chilling in a somehow little shaby ambience with one of the must haves (spritzer, beer, schnitzel, gulaschsuppn etc.) The food is good, the service is quick, sometimes its hard to get a spot, but there is one big table where you can have the chance to get unexpacted nice tableneighbors :) one minuspoint for non smokers like me is the smoke. read more

Great locale to hang out and grab a small bite and a few beers. Best to go in winter than summer as no garden. Changed beers from egger to gosser but still refreshing. Try Monday schnitzel lunch deal. Definitely one of best in Vienna! Great value for money. read more

Nice, traditional Viennese coffee house, though it's become more and more touristic over the years. My favourite place to escape from the busy streets and drink a coffee. Food is nothing special, waiters are not there to entertain you, but it still has its charm. read more

Great place, decent prices, local spot. We had the three soups offered: beans with bacon, goulash, and a noodle soup and all were good but the beans with bacon was the best. We also split a wienerschnitzel and several beers. Everything was delicious and moderately priced! Our only complaint is that there's a lot of smoke in the place and that the service is really slow. There are only two waiters for the whole place and I believe one cook so getting someone's attention can be a little frustrating. My friend and I were so excited to visit this place after seeing all the reviews, but in my two months of being in Wien I have never had a more rude waiter. We came in to try the apple strudel and the waiter got very upset after we said we didn't want coffee. He yelled at us, and continued to make snarky comments as he was taking someone else's order. Everyone here is friendly, the schnitzel is one of the best (and most plentiful) I've had since moving here. The menu is simple, covering all of the comfort dishes one would expect in Vienna. The entrance room of the restaurant is a smoking area so you are attacked by a pungent smell as soon as you set foot in. Still we made our way to the second room, for non smokers and the 6 of us were seated at the smallest table while the waiter practically ushered out its single occupant. We ordered some gulash, wursts and schnitzels as well as toasts that we received in approx. 3 min, as well as enough tap water to fill 3 glasses. When asked which toast was what as we didn't clearly understand, the waiter sarcastically told us that he was not the cook nor the one placing the order and left us wondering. Right after, as we were asking for more water, he yelled in the restaurant explaining that hey had bottled water and that we could not just drink tap water and that our behavior was wrong. I'm no expert but it appears to be truly authentic. A few words of caution - if you're a non-smoker, go to the back room and be patient, no one who works here is in a rush. The Goulash is not served as a soup but chunks of beef and it won't disappoint. We were surrounded by locals and felt like we were truly experiencing Vienna. read more

We ordered a Frankfurter, served with a bun and mustard, horseradish. This was good, but not the best I've ever had. The chicken schnitzel was excellent. Served with two kinds of potato salad and more than enough to eat. Smoking section in the front, separated by a door to the rear non-smoking section. The server was friendly enough and spoke English. Yelp doesn't often lead me astray, but this time it definitely did. I am not sure why this place gets such good reviews when the service is slow, the waiters are really rude, and the food is mediocre at best. Absolutely lovely cafe/bar in the heart of Vienna, on some small back street or other. We spent a nice evening cradling a few beers, surrounded by walls covered in what looked like 50 years of posters. This place is good for happy hour, if you just want to stop by for a drink or two. Otherwise, it is too smoky. The food menu on the restaurant side is good, but the bar snacks are limited and not so tasty. The best part about it are the bathrooms. Came here because we saw the apple strudel had good reviews. It was fine but the service was pretty rude when we were asking questions. We asked for an extra fork because we were sharing the strudel and the waiter said it was one euro for an extra fork. Never have seen this policy before and won't be coming back when we visit Vienna again. read more

What a great find! Yes you have to pass through the smoking room to get to the nonsmoking room it but I never really smelled much cigarette smoke where I was sitting. And the service was wonderful. My waiter was silly and friendly. And the goulash...oh, the goulash. I just wished it would have been served with potatoes or something other than bread to soak up the yummy sauce. This place is quirky and fun, and has quite a bit of history. Highly recommend! read more
