I visited Demel Vienna on August 19 during breakfast. I have always loved Demel from my previous visits, and I know it is a world-renowned and historic establishment, which is why this experience was especially disappointing. I ordered my usual Kaiserschmarrn and a drink. I had noticed that the table next to me had a drink that looked good, so when the waitress took my order, I specifically told her that I wanted the same drink the table next to me was having. When my order arrived, it was brought by a different waitress. The drink looked completely different from what I had pointed to, so I asked her what it was. She told me it was a double espresso. I explained that I had not ordered a double espresso and again pointed to the drink at the table next to me, which was clearly a hot chocolate. The waitress then called over the waitress who had originally taken my order. Instead of simply acknowledging that there had been a misunderstanding, she insisted, "That's what you ordered." When I explained again that it wasn't, she told me, "It's the same thing." A **double espresso and a hot chocolate are obviously not the same thing.** What bothered me even more than the incorrect order was the way both waitresses spoke to me. Their attitudes and tone were extremely rude, dismissive, and demeaning--as though I was stupid for pointing out the obvious mistake. The interaction became uncomfortable enough that people sitting at other tables were looking over at us. To make matters worse, my Kaiserschmarrn was **cold**. It tasted as though it had already been sitting out for some time before it was brought to my table. I understand that mistakes happen. Had they simply apologized for the misunderstanding and corrected the drink, I would not have had an issue. Instead, I was argued with and spoken down to over something that could have been resolved in seconds. This was genuinely one of the worst customer-service experiences I have ever had at a restaurant, and certainly not what I expected from an establishment with Demel's reputation. After several previous visits that I enjoyed, it is extremely disappointing to say that I will not return and will no longer recommend Demel to my friends. read more

We visited twice during our stay in Vienna and dined inside one time and got a to go order the second. The first visit was to dine inside and escape the brutal June heatwave. We were directed to go upstairs and found an open seat in no time at all. Just passing by all the display cases filled with desserts and pastries triggered the cravings. We did a quick menu perusal but really knew that we wanted to try the kaiserschmarrn which was a traditional Austrian dessert made up torn up pancakes, served with a plum compote and dusted with powdered sugar. It was light, had a nice caramelized flavor from browning in the pan and little pops of more sweetness from the raisins. It was so delicious that we came back the next day for more but shortcut the line and got it to go from the takeaway window. Same kaiserschmarrn but around 3 Euros cheaper for a larger serving. After eating we wanted around the restaurant and towards the back you can see just how the cooks juggled making many pans of Kaiserschmarrn at the same time. Enjoyed our first visit so much, we snuck in another visit before trip end. A local guide gave us the important tip, that while we would see the outdoor are in front packed because everyone wants to eat there, he doesn't understand why and told us to venture inside and upstairs. This was a wise decision. The indoor space is beautiful and we were seated promptly both times (mid-day). The first time we both got coffee drinks and shared a piece of apple strudel. Second visit we were hungrier so shared the two tiered "best of" sampler. It included four savory open-faced sandwiches and four desserts. All in small sizes, although still big enough to share with another person. The other reason for the second visit was to peruse their downstairs shop. We wanted to bring some high quality souvenirs home to gift to family/friends and this was the perfect shopping location. We got a few chocolate things, including a little something for us. One thing I noticed is that, in addition to tasty chocolates, the boxes themselves are quite pretty and a gift themselves. The wait is really, really long, but it's actually not that bad if you stick it through because while in Vienna... Demel is one of those iconic historic cafes that you have to experience as well as taste. I tried their famous Sachertorte, and while it didn't top Sacher Hotel's (the ORIGINAL home of the dessert of course) it's a chocolate dream. That mix of chocolate sponge cake with apricot jam and chocolate ganache is just something you can't miss. The cafe itself is lovely, and I felt so fortunate to sit outside and gaze out at the sidewalk even though it was a rainy day, the ambiance like something of a story book. While doing research on famous food to eat in Wien, Demel popped up as a classic Viennese dessert shop open since 1786, famous for their variety of traditional pastries such as Sacher torte, Kaiserschmarnn, apfelstrudeln (apple strudel) and other Viennese cakes. The store started as a confectionery by Ludwig Dehne, then after passing it on to his apprentice Christoph Demel, becomes the royal purveyor of sweets to the National Hofburg Theatre, which was across the street from Demel's original location. In 1888 they moved to the current building, which rooms being decorated in the Roccoco style. While walking around our first late afternoon/early evening we happened to walk by and were enticed by the delicious smells wafting out the door. I didn't get a pic, though you can see in some other posts that they make fresh Kaiserschmarnn (pancakes with seasonal jam), you can smell the milk/cream/butter, sugar and eggs turning into delectable morsels of tastiness as the batter is poured then pan-fried lightly. So hard to resist these though we hadn't had dinner yet so didn't want to ruin our appetites. However since they close at 7pm and it was nearing 6:30pm we decided to grab a few pieces of cake to go. All individual slices were €7.90. You can also buy entire cakes. Sacher torte: one of the famous things to eat in Vienna, this consists of a two-layer chocolate cake with a light apricot glaze applied to the cake, then covered in a thin coating of chocolate glaze. I had read online that the crumb of Sacher torte can be kinda dry, I have to agree that both options we tried this was the case, not too off putting since that seems to be part of the original texture, but customers should be aware it's not like biting into a moist red velvet cake or brownie. The flavor of the cocoa was apparent, I say that because it taste more like cocoa to me than processed chocolate. The apricot glaze added a tidbit of acidity to bright the bite. Fächertorte: this was like a seasonal "all-in-one" strudel to me, describing the layers from the bottom up--poppy seed paste, almond cake (could really taste the nuttiness in the flour), julienned apple slices, cooked plum compote, all baked inside an outer crust. Felt like a very traditional eastern European autumn dessert and very light in sweetness. May not be for everyone. Dobos torte: according to google, this "is is a classic Hungarian sponge cake made of six thin layers of sponge cake filled with chocolate buttercream and topped with a hard caramel glaze. Created by Hungarian chef József Dobos in the late 19th century." The Demel iteration used regular buttercream and was delightfully creamy and rich. I only wish the cake slices were a little more generous. If I were in Vienna again I would certainly try their pancakes, maybe some of their cookies too. Our interaction with the staff was minimal though generally pleasant, we had questions about ingredients in a few of the cakes, which they were able to answer. We each got something different, the famous broken pancakes were good but too much cinnamon in the plums, others weren't wild about their desserts either. During a recent European Trip, Mom was insistent on experiencing Vienna's cafe culture. We debated between Demel and Cafe Central but settled on Demel. We were in line about 25 minutes before they opened and there were probably 40 people in front of us. We watched as they prepped the patio and then the doors opened about 5 minutes before the listed opening time. We followed the line of folks in front of us through the gift shop where chefs were already prepping lots of Kaiserschmarrn. We went upstairs and grabbed a table for two. I was a little surprised to see other groups of two and singles take four tops. That doesn't seem right but it was first come-first served. The inside dining areas are very pretty. Eventually someone came by to take or order. We got a latte, a hot chocolate, an order of Kaiserschmarrn, and an order of their donuts. Everything came out pretty quickly ( we saw the "buffet" that servers can use to prep the most ordered items in the hallway upstairs which makes service easy.) Everything was delicious. The pancakes were fluffy and sweet but I think the donuts with the vanilla sauce were our favorite. The place was VERY busy as we explored the gift shop before heading out. We stopped by their smaller counter right across the church and got their famous dessert. One day we got the poached beer and fruit topping which was great and then we went back next day for the cream version. My favorite was the cream version but my husband loved the fruit version. As I was exploring the Hofburg Palace area and the souvenir shops during the late afternoon/early evening, I stumbled across this really cute bakery/patisserie/restaurant called Demel that has been around since 1786 and was loved by aristocrats and royalty. Apparently Empress Sisi herself was a fan of their candied violets! I was enticed by the beautiful displays of desserts and decor, so I decided to try dinner and dessert here. I'm glad I decided when I did because right when I got in line, the line behind me exploded. It ended up being a huge tourist trap--food wasn't that great lol. And when I asked for water, I meant complimentary water, not a bottle of water that I ended up being charged about $5.00 USD for. I ordered: Goulash: I never had goulash before, but I had a feeling that what I was served was not representative of a proper goulash. The one word I can use to describe it is "sad." Attaching a photo, as a picture speaks a thousand words. A sad steak drowning in muddy sauce with 3 plain potatoes. Marillenknodel: homemade apricot dumplings with butter crumbs. We wanted to check out Demel and got there about 30 minutes before close, but managed to snag a table outside right away. Even though it was late they were still packed. I got a hot chocolate and Kaiserschmarrn (fluffy pancake thing with plum jam) and it was delicious. The chocolate was not too sweet but very rich. Right when they closed they literally closed out all the tables and locked the doors! So that was a bit weird and rushed. Also, Bathrooms were just okay and a bit cramped and far in the back of the store. But if you're in the area and want some nice treats and you don't have a huge wait, I would recommend it. read more

Our server was so friendly and helpful. I got the scrambled eggs with Vienna sausage, a friend got the famous pancakes, and my wife got a ham and cheese sandwich. Wins all the way around. We were outside, so right next to the line to get in. The fence and bushes though really helped and wasn't an issue at all for us. Tried to get back, but never made it. Both the outdoor seating and the second floor were packed, and the wait was a bit too long, so we decided to grab desserts to go. Tried their famous Original Sacher cake - as rich and delicious as the legend says. We also picked up the Kaiserschmarrn, a fluffy shredded pancake that was once a royal favorite. The place has been around since the 1700s, and you can feel the history inside with its Baroque-style charm, even if it was a little chaotic with all the tourists. Visited for the popular,well know Kaiserschmarrn they sell. There was a huge dine in line as well as a huge to go line. It was a pretty big space/eatery. The outside line went by pretty fast. As you order, pay and you get your order on the spot. The plums were interesting. Not really to my liking. But very interesting. The plum gave the cake my portion a sweet flavor. We went as part of the tourist experience and learned the lesson as to why these places are called "traps". We waited in the long line to be seated under the impression it would be worth it; we were met with absolutely horrendous service and mediocre desserts. The waiter took 20 minutes to take our order after we were seated, another 20 to bring our food, and then another 20 to bring our check after it was requested. The waitress was very rude to us, constant eye rolling and loud sighing when she took our order and requested the check. Not to mention, the food was okay at best. We ordered the apple strudel and it tasted as if it had been sitting out all day. With a 20 minute wait for food, I would have hoped it would at least taste fresh. If you're a fan of sweets, then you must stop at Demel's takeout window for kaiserschmarrn! We were hesitant to order kaiserschmarrn while in Austria after a lackluster experience in Germany, and we immediately regretted that decision after ordering kaiserschmarrn from Demel. From the first bite, we knew that this would be a transcendent experience, a dessert with a nice mix of flavors and textures (sweet, tart fluffy, crispy). It was so good that we still lament our failure to place a second order! Note that the takeout window often has a line, but it moves fairly quickly since your options are limited to small or large kaiserschmarrn. If you want to sample some of Demel's other fare, you'll have to snag a seat in the cafe itself. read more

A must go when you are in Vienna. There are multiple locations so make sure you pick the ones in charming old buildings for extra's atmosphere. Their selection of cakes and sweets are superb. Hot dogs and croissant sandwiches are good too. Services are efficient and friendly. We only had 6 hours on a layover in Vienna, and our top choice restaurant had a huge line so I recognized Demel from the travel guides and decided to give it a shot. Turns out it was yummy and memorable in its own right, not what I would usually consider a tourist trap. Although I was worried about a wait, they quickly seated us on the top floor with a view of the street. Ambiance was nice, and food was even better. We were intrigued by the kaiserschmarrn (their pancakes) on the way in, which turned out to be a tasty treat. I wanted something more filling, so randomly chose the scrambled eggs with sausage. It was subtle yet addicting, with great flavor from the sausage (and the scallions if I remember correctly) and consistency, so good we got another plate of it. My husband still randomly brings up the delicious eggs in Vienna on occasion when we make scrambled eggs at home. read more
