    Japanese IPA, really good!!
    Kellie R.

Kagayaki is a nice choice for lunch or dinner. We visit every time we go to Montreal. Kagayaki isn't the easiest business to find in Chinatown. It's located on the top of a small flight of stairs. When we arrived on Friday for an early dinner, we were told that we'd have a 2 hour time limit because we didn't have reservations. That was plenty time for us to cook our veg and meat and enjoy it all. Quite a few other people had time limits as well and the closer it got to reservations checking in, the less time newcomers had. They weren't very busy but it seemed like it was low on staff so service was a bit slow. The menu is pretty simple. Kagayaki isn't cheap by any means. It seems more expensive than it should be. Alcohol is also rather costly here. My Japanese IPA was $13 for a bottle. I do miss their bubble sake, we went there mainly for the bubble sake. Unfortunately, they don't have it anymore. But the IPA was amazing! I ordered the surf and turf and my husband ordered the prime beef with the spicy broth. His broth tasted better than mine. I had him give me some broth so I could have more flavor. Everything was good and I had so much leftover to bring back to the hotel with me. The prime rib was delicious in the spicy broth and dipped in the peanut sauce! Overall, Kagayaki is good but I should have gotten a different broth. The spicy is the best. The staff are very friendly every time.

Fantastic Shabu Shabu at an extremely reasonable price. Went there right when it opened at 5pm, and had a wonderful experience. The combo was very good and enough for for my wife myself and son. The meats are all great, but personally the lamb wasn't for me. It wasn't bad, just not my taste. highly recommend. Up to par with some Japanes Shabu Shabu's Ive been too.

Not bad! I like the ambiance and I think they are real Japanese. I was quite surprised since let's be honest most Asian restaurants are owned by Chinese. P.S. The food looks pretty healthy and fresh.

I have been wanting to try this place for a couple of years now, and I am happy that we did. This is only my second Shabu Shabu experience, so I do not claim to be any sort of expert. You can order either a small or a large here. I recommend a small for one person or a large for two people to share. My husband ordered the traditional broth with beef, because he wanted to try shabu in the traditional way it is supposed to be served. Well, he regretted it because it was completely flavorless. The "broth" was water with one piece of dried seaweed in it. I ordered the "spicy" broth, which was not authentic Japanese, but quite tasty. It reminded me of Korean spicy tang soup- and was just the right amount of spicy-ness. They also pass around a condiment tray with different toppings like green onion, hot pepper powder, and ground radish- I recommend using one of not all of these for flavor in the broth. Mine became a yummy Korean spicy stew (Soon Dubu Jigae) before the night was over. You are served a large tray of mixed vegetables and tofu to put into the soup. The beef was tender and had great flavor, but the cut of pork used tasted just like Holiday Ham, which did not go well with the flavor of the soup. Maybe it would go better with some mashed potatoes and a side of cranberry sauce. The meal also comes with two sauces; one a ponzu type and one a peanut/sesame type sauce. I liked the ponzu more because the strength of the sauce held up well against the strong meat flavors. Rice and a complimentary dessert are also served.

Time it took for them to bring the pot

I've reserved for 4 seats at 7pm. I came over at 6:58 just to be seated 5 minutes late, embarrassing me in front of my business guests. This is because there is only one server in this cramped restaurants which brings me to my second point. The waitress came over to place our order at 7:21 without bothering to give us water. My water came over 10 minutes later. The crowded restaurant was very nice to have a conversation without the fear of being obnoxious. The bathroom really bothered me because the males bathroom had a urinal and a toilet, really a one person bathroom, but the door didn't have a lock. It was extremely uncomfortable taking a piss. Because the doors don't lock, I myself have walked into someone using a bathroom. Overall, I would never come back to this restaurant because of the extremely poor service they have here.

I love saying the word Shabu Shabu, so here goes: the place is a quiet respite from most of the other Chinatown restos. Most people are seated at the counter and we basically cook our own food in the broth. I'm not an expert, but i get the impression this food is very healthy, lots of vegetables and not too much meat. It's a fun experience but the traditional broth i chose lacked flavor and i would recommend to talk to the waiter and ask for suggestions. I have been to a Mongolian hot pot in the same area and that one was too spicy. I would not mind going back and trying more, the prices are more than fair considering the effort put into this setup

I needed to add this business to this website for 2 reasons: 1, it's awesome and authentical. 2: My friend believes restomontreal.ca is a better restaurant review website than Yelp. So as I prefer Yelp and wanted to proove him wrong, I needed to add that business. One of the issue I got with Japanese cuisine in Montreal it's that it's mostly marginalize in Sushi and Crazy Chef mumbling funny stuff and doing a flame while cooking your shrimps. I went to 2 great Japanese restaurant in my life and one of them is Mikado and the other one is Hanashima. Mikado would be more in the Modern New Japanese cuisine style with some really talented chef and Hanashima would be more into the Traditional Japanese Cuisine. Now, I'm not an expert, but my friend is really into Japanese stuff and knows more about it. From what I understand, Traditional Japanese cuisine focuses on the taste and quality of the food. The menu is quite simple. The restaurant is welcoming and it kind of feel like a bar with the exception that it's japanese fondue restaurant! You have 3 choices of broth. Chicken, Neutral (algae) and Spicy (which I was told is really spicy). Then you choose your sides. Vegetarian will be happy to find some great vegetable and meat lover will be happy to find their meat too. It's one of the most healthy meal you can have: Boiled in a great broth, with sides of rice and soya sauce and peanut sauce, this meal is so simple, yet so good and CHEAP, that it's worth a 5Stars. Alcool + Shrimps + Meat plates and Veggie plates, + Chicken Broth with Tip cost me 40-45$. Plan at least 1-2 hours for your meal.

This place was great! My first experience in a Shabu Shabu type restaurant! I had the beef/veggie combo which was excellent, but I think the next time the meat will be enough. Very good quality food, and people were really nice. You each have your own pot of broth, and your meat cooks in less then 15 seconds! Very cool restaurant. I will be going back soon

The Long Version: I love mochi. Like it's one of my favourite desserts. So when I saw that Fondue Haidilao had an UberEats deal for BOGO (buy one get one free) mochi, I had to check it out. Especially since our hotel was just around the corner. My husband does not enjoy hotpot and I'm uncertain how I feel about takeout hotpot anyway, so I just got the mochi, lol. It was $3.95 for 2 orders (since it was BOGO). Each order contains 3 pieces, so I got 6 pieces. They are small but still very reasonable for the price, especially BOGO. I ordered on the app and picked up. Pick-up was quick and smooth. Staff were courteous. The mochi were soft and chewy. They had finely grated coconut on the outside and custard on the inside. The custard was unfortunately not creamy but rather it had a more starchy consistency, a bit different from what I was expecting, but it was still ok. Note that since Haidilao is a Chinese chain, the mochi is Chinese-style not Japanese-style. I would love to try the hotpot at Haidilao one day. Maybe when my mom and I return for another mother-daughter trip to Montreal since the hubster does not like hotpot. Street parking only. Review #69 (2025)

Their menu is so diverse, the portions big, everything is flavourful and filling, they pay attention to all the details. From the moment you step in to the end of your meal, it's an experience. They give you an apron so you don't stain your clothes, they provide plenty of napkins and utensils, they pass by multiple times to clear your table and dirty dishes, they give you a hair tie so your hair doesn't get in your food. It's a fun time! There's music, or a noodle pull guy, or sometimes a dancer! They've really got it all. Make sure to réservé because this place is in high demand and it is impossible to get a table last minute if you are a big group. I got the sukiyaki soup base which is soy and onions. It was really good! Bot spicy at all and paired well with the lamb, beef, and pork we ordered. Also got some corn and it was so juicy and sweet! You can still order noodles and not pay the extra for the employee to pull them in front of you, they are still fresh and taste delicious. I don't find it too expensive considering I ate almost as if it was an all you can eat and the price was the same but you're getting better service and quality of food.

They are still figuring a few things out. For instance the vestiaire is not available for customers just yet (only staff), but it might be in the future (which would be amazing to avoid coats smelling like hot pot for the next 3 days). The place it not that big, but they managed to arrange quite a few tables in there. And it's already popular! It was pretty much full on both nights I was there. There are large and small pots. Large pots are shared between diners of a given table, as it is usually the case in China. Small pots (individual pots) give more freedom as to which base soup you want, although large pots allow a maximum of 3 different soups! The induction cookers were powerful, and the simple electronic pads at each table enabled to easily control boiling. There's quite a few base soups available. So far I tried the "traditional spicy soupe", "health mushroom soupe", "original bone soupe" and "nourishing health chicken soupe" (the English names might be a bit puzzling, but they were all tasty). The heat level of the spicy soup was also quite satisfying for us Sichuanese. It is all you can eat, at about 25$ per person. The base soup costs extra, and so do drinks and some select items (e.g. duck blood, beef tongue, etc.). The choice of food items if not the most diverse, but covers most essentials. The main attraction remains meat, in this case AA+ beef and lamb. The mashed shrimp (pureed shrimp that boils into a shimp meatball) was also very popular. Soups and food came fairly fast, and was very nicely displayed. Some items were forgotten on both of my visits, but it didn't affect the overall experience. There's two self-serve stations, one for ready to eats (spring rolls, fried fish (?), oranges, fried buns, etc.) and one for sauces. The sauce station had everything I needed, but was quite messy and in need of replenishing. I also wished the oil would be sesame oil instead of vegetable (?) oil. Ladles and strainers can be found on the shelf under the sauce station. Overall, the taste was excellent, and there was a lot of efforts and good attitude from the staff. The place was still a bit messy and chaotic, and the air was a bit stuffy, given all the steam that is produced. But then again, it's arguably part of an old school hot pot experience!

There are SO many things that don't even have a common term in English, which is impressive!
