But at least I got to stop by to check them out one day when I was back working in the area for a couple of days. Their seasoning blends are mixed up locally, and I found an interesting variety. I picked up several to add to a housewarming gift and a couple for me. I have only tried one of the so far--the Paniolo Seasoning. It's a mix of smoky kiawe salt, pepper & garlic. Yes, it's a pretty common blend (with exception of the smoky salt). I used it to rub on some ribeye steaks and before grilling some burgers with great results. They were really tasty! Customer service was great. I asked Ruth to put some aside for me to come pick up later, since their Apple Pay wasn't functioning properly. When I forgot to pick up my items until the next day, I was pleasantly surprised to find them bagged up with my name on them. The store hours are a bit short for now, as they are just opening up, so be sure to check before heading over there. Please support this local, small business!

It was to eliminate the waste of unused overly ripened fruits and veggies. They make these from fresh produce and add in a bit of their own herbs to kick it up. NOT ONLY is it HEALTHY, but innovative as to keeping things from being tossed into the lands and recreating a better use for them. They also make wine as well. This business shares the thought of reduce, reuse & recycle to a whole different level. Not only do they re-use the fruits & veggies that are going bad, but they also extract herbs into the mix they create. It's really interesting on how they e made a moctail out of it! Surprisingly, I really enjoyed its deliciousness and tanginess. Me personally I LOVE SWEET & SOUR things, like pickle mango & li-hing mui. So this is right up my alley! Anywho, they also have different items they sell aside of vinegar & spices & wine. I think there was some honey extract ginger. Some rolling pins. Not your normal everyday average type. But it truly unique and one of a kind. It's made from either mango or koa wood. Or BOTH! I didn't get a chance to take the pins up close but I think you can see it in one of my photos. After enjoying brunch at the fabulous Mexican restaurant next door, we headed to Hawaiian Vintage. We were greeted by the owner as she began to share with us about what they do, when they started their business, where the ingredients come from, why they get their ingredients locally and how they turn fruit into wine into shrubs and finally, into vinegar. She shared with us the positive health benefits while walking behind the counter as she pulled out and placed a bottle of each flavor of shrub on the counter and she began to pour the first sample for my sister and me. What a fun experience! Every single shrub I could sample was delicious. I love the fruitiness and the smell of the different herbs. And because of it, I didn't really notice or mind the vinegar. We talked about the many ways of using the shrubs as marinades, salad dressings, with fish, meats, teas, morning shot, mocktails and cocktails, and even utilizing different flowers, fruits and herbs. And so, we proceeded to purchase a few bottle samples. For a 3 pack sample of 4 oz bottles is $36. However, for the month of September 2024, you get an additional 4 oz bottle for free. Highly recommend supporting this local company and I hope it will become one of the many long time establishments that you can only find in Wahiawa.

The lady behind the glass divider did not look up, no greeting at all. I quickly pulled a few packets of orig poke mix from what seemed like display racks, when I realized there's no cash register and no prices listed anywhere. So I stuck my head into her office and asked "these are for sale right?" She held her finger up without making eye contact and said "just a minute" because apparently what she was working on was much more important than catering to a peasant off the street taking up air. Literally a minute or two of awkward silence passed. Long enough for me to look around and notice this place doubled as some kind of unit rental business with keys hanging off a pegboard. Clearly that business took priority over my needing a few poke mix packets to bring to my brother in California. When she finally acknowledged my presence she replied "yes but you have to buy a minimum of $45." Excuse me? What? When I asked how much each one cost ($7.95) I had to figure out quickly whether I needed to buy 4, 5, or just bolt out of there with no ogo for my brother because I clearly was getting the message that customers aren't actually welcome there. I bit the bullet though, grabbed 4 packs of original poke mix and one other kind and went to pay. Turns out the other mix was $27 or something more than I'd spend on pounds of fresh ahi so that one went back on the rack. This wasted another minute of Important Lady's time. So after another awkwatd waiting moment, I handed her my credit card which she ran in silence, wiished her a happy holiday, and left that shop of unhappiness never to return again. Someone in her life, please give her the hug she needs. The poke mix is ono though!

Which makes this review frustrating to write. The rice is exceptional. The sourcing is thoughtful, the seasonal varieties are genuinely special and if you care about Japanese rice, this place deserves its reputation. The service does not. On my latest visit I walked in with my family, including my two and four year old. If you've ever shopped with kids that age, you know you're already working overtime keeping little hands off displays, making sure nothing gets broken, trying to be respectful of the space. Not once did anyone greet us. No hello. No welcome. No acknowledgment that we'd even walked through the door. When I asked what I thought was a perfectly reasonable question whether I should buy the limited seasonal rice or the variety I'd enjoyed on a previous visit the answer felt dismissive, almost like I was wasting their time. If you're building a business around expertise, helping customers understand the differences shouldn't feel like pulling teeth. That's the entire point of having knowledgeable staff. Yes, the parking is inconvenient. Yes, the prices are premium. I can live with both because the product is genuinely excellent. What I can't understand is why a store built around craftsmanship seems so indifferent to hospitality. I still bought the rice because it's that good. But I left feeling like my business was expected, not appreciated. I sincerely hope they improve because I'd rather support them than look elsewhere. But if another shop opens with rice of this quality and people who simply smile, say hello and take a minute to help customers make a decision, I'll switch without thinking twice. The rice earns five stars. The experience earns one.
