I enjoyed the "hamachi japino" , which was yellowtail sashimi with jalapeno slices in ponzu sauce, with lime slices and tobiko, on a bed of mixed greens. Very tasty. I also ordered teriyaki salmon which was a huge filet served with a bed of steamed rice. The salmon was cooked perfectly. Not over or underdone . They offer beer and soft drinks and mochi ice cream for dessert. I went on a Wednesday evening and parking was a bit scarce, but worth parking around the block if you had to. Came here on a recommendation from the hotel front desk and very glad I did. Will come back if I'm in town ever again. read more

I ordered a roll online. The roll they gave me definitely was not the roll I ordered, the ingredients were not the same. Went in person to see if I could get it remade to actually be the roll I ordered. They said that what they made was that roll and that they would not make it. I was confused because they were clearly not the same. They said they would give me a refund instead. After 30 minutes of waiting for somebody to give me the refund I decided to different order rolls seeing as I would not get a remake. They charged me for the new rolls instead of negating the refund and offering the new rolls for free (the combined price of the two rolls was still less money than the one original roll I ordered). After waiting 15+ minutes the new rolls were made and they did not tell me they would refund me. So I waited longer and asked for the refund then was told they could not do it at that time and I would have to come back 3 hours later in order to get the refund. At that point I had been there for 45+ minutes and was over it. Resounding disappointing experience and overall waste of my time. The food is yummy though. read more

I heard about Kaizen through my barber as well as a friend from the gym. I'm glad I came. I really would rate this place a 4.5 out of 5 stars but I'm happy to round up. The hours online are not accurate. My fiancé and I came at 4:00 pm and were expecting them to be open according to the times online, but they were closed. We waited the extra thirty minutes and I am glad we did. The Braised Pork Belly Tonkatsu was so creamy, rich, and savory. The noodles were perfectly cooked-- I ate them fast so they did not overcook in the perfectly heated broth. The Sweet Potato Philadelphia Roll was a surprising stand out. Crispy tempura sweet potato and the cream cheese in a sushi roll... very good. A pleasantly surprising hit. We will come back again. read more

Place had their grand opening today, and a buddy invited me along to dinner, so figured I'd leave my thoughts. First impressions - the menu had a lot of spelling errors and typos. There are established conventions for the romanized spelling of Japanese words (including dishes), and there were a number of dishes spelled incorrectly ("tonkatsu" when they meant "tonkotsu," "gyodon" when they meant "gyudon" included), the address on the menu listing the town as "Grand Fork" and the state as "NF." Overall seems haphazardly put together and rather unprofessional. Service was overall good - I get that they were busy with a full house, and I liked the waitress's forthcoming attitude with some of the growing pains of being a new restaurant. Ordered gyoza, tonkotsu ramen, and a tuna roll. Gyoza was okay, though pricey for the portion I got - 5 two-bite pieces for $8. Tuna roll is your typical rice-on-the-outside American-style roll (I prefer the Japanese style seaweed on the outside) with a bit of avocado in there with the fish; fish portion was rather small for each roll. Still, it was okay - $9. The tonkotsu ramen... man, my standards for ramen are pretty low, but this was actually kind of bad. The broth tasted incredibly buttery and almost... sweet, almost like a cream. I was hungry, so I finished it, but I felt unappetized about halfway through it. Toppings were okay, noodles were alright - nothing to complain about there. I might try a different ramen variety next time, but I'll likely never get the tonkotsu again, I'll stick to other places for that. Ramen was $16.95, so total was $33.95 before tax and tip. This place has room and potential to grow over the coming months, and I'll give it another try around then. For now, I'll get my Japanese food fix when I'm out of town. read more

This place is a HIDDEN GEM!! Some colleagues and I visited over our lunch break. We all tried something different and all of our meals surpassed our expectations. There is a huge variety of dishes and the menu pictures made my decision very difficult because I wanted to try it all! All of the staff were so friendly, attentive, and helpful. It was such a pleasant experience that I almost decided to bring my husband back for dinner the same night! The restaurant and restrooms are clean and tastefully decorated. Friday night at 5pm and the place was kind of a ghost town. But, never ones to let that daunt us, we stopped in for dinner. Service was great. Serves was quick and engaging. Restaurant and decor was a bit spartan and somewhat haphazard feeling. There were boxes piled up behind the cash register. And it was evident that some maintenance was being done in the entry way as some tools were piled in the corner. I know those are small potatoes in the grand scheme of things, but they do something to the mystique of a dining experience. Food was decent. Sushi was OKAY by midwest standards. One piece of the nigiri was fishy in odor, but everything else seemed decently fresh. Udon was flavorful as was the ramen. Service was FAST. Overall, it was a fairly generic experience that would have probably become a regular spot for our dinners but the prices kinda take it out of the running. Locally, you can get better/at least equal versions of the same food for about 40% less. It was a fine place to eat but probably not worth the high premium cost. read more
