As a beginner with no BJJ experience, I've been in the Fundamentals 1 class training with Professor Sabio. He is also humble, approachable, and has a teachers heart. He leads by example, keeps the class on task, and is knowledgeable. The leadership style breeds good attitude and relationships throughout the gym making a great experience! They offer group classes and private classes. Group classes are separated by age groups to keep things fair in age and weight. If you are new to the sport, they offer a free introductory class. CGJJA also hosts an annual tournament for students to test their skills. We specifically signed up our 4 and 6 year old boys for their introductory class. After their first class, they were hooked and have been with this academy for over two years now. The coaches are very patient and great with the kids! The only drawback to this location is spectating. They only have a couple benches inside the front area. They do now allow parents to sit inside, I'm assuming for distraction purposes. If you want to watch, you have to stand outside and watch through the windows. Not the worst thing, but worth noting. All in all, we are happy with what our boys have been learning at the Ripon Academy!

One thing that really sets this gym apart is the sense of community. They regularly host BBQs on holidays and special occasions, and anyone who comes by for Friday night open mat is always welcome. I've honestly never trained at a gym that makes sure everyone gets fed after practice, but these guys never let us leave hungry. They also go the extra mile to make the gym comfortable, especially during the summer, with air conditioning and plenty of fans to keep the airflow going. My 14-year-old will even come train with the adults too, which says a lot compared to some of the other gyms we've been to. We also bring our 3-year-old son, and the gym has this gated kids' area that is pretty legit. He's always having his own little party and is chillin while the rest of us are on the mats. It's a small thing, but it makes a huge difference for families with little ones who aren't quite ready to train yet. The talent and the culture here are authentic, which is really important to me. He picked this school to train at! It was the atmosphere. The kids class are awesome! There are games involve, drills and friendly little competitions that kept kids very attentive (which is extremely difficult to do for 4,5,6 year olds). This gym is very clean and easy to get to (just west of I-5 freeway off of Hammer Lane). The classes are laid back and offers a very chill and stress free environment. I love that they play lots of 80's and reggae music in the background during classes. Tim and Stella are fantastic instructors! I liked so much for my son that I started training here too once I saw my son was getting after it! Honestly, I was apprehensive at first because I had a couple reasons: 1:I had an old neck injury and was scared of aggravating it, but I have not because everyone I roll with is super cool and respectful about my condition. 2: I train at another martial arts school; Tim and Stella are totally cool with it because they know I'm just trying to become a better martial artist. Everyone here is super cool and easy going. The instruction is first class. I had came from another Jiujitsu school and had to adjust to an entirely new way of thinking, analyzing my game and strategies (10th Planet is on another level). It was great starting over again and being humbled. One thing about training Jiu-Jitsu, it puts your ego in check pretty quickly! If you wanna train with ego, the mats quickly adjusts that issue. Come in with an open mind and an attitude of ready to learn. Learning Jiu-Jitsu is one the best empty handed skills one can learn to effectively have self defense skills. They gi and no gi classes.

I've only visited this particular school and observed the training and its great. The students are…read morelearning quickly how to defend themselves while having a great time and burning calories at a cyclic rate. I've personally attended other of Tony Nunez' schools from northern California and the training I received is unmatched. I know for a fact that Tony has trained with plenty of MMA fighters, he has sent a few to professional rings. One in particular I recall is Catharine Linderman, whom became a phenomenal fighter. I only do know that Tony Nunez was a golden globe champion in the 80's.
