I went on Saturday night, around 7-10pm PARKING - There are a couple of paid parking lots around the area, but a baseball game was also going on the same night so lots were pretty full. Most cars parked on nearby streets and I did see police patrolling when we walked back out to our car ENTRY FEE - When we arrived it was $10, however looks like it's less if you arrive before 7pm FOOD/DRINK TICKETS - The tickets are 50¢ per ticket...beer was 8 tickets, mixed island drinks were 12. I didn't buy food so can't speak to price/quality VENDORS - Maybe 15 shopping vendors; items ranged from dresses, t-shirts, jewelry, incense, smoking accessories CHAIRS - If you have your own lawn chair (or blanket), bring it. Most people sat in their chairs and listened to the music MUSIC - They had one stage, I'm not into Reggae music and didn't know the bands but there were quite a few people starting to dance and the music was good. Overall it was ok...if you like live music / Reggae. The overall atmosphere was a little depressing, you can make a loop around the shopping vendors pretty quickly, so it's basically just the music. There were a lot of people there and into the music though. Nothing really for little kids to do

Black Arts Festival was held here today and was such a fabulous showcase of local and regional…read moretalent! It was the first festival I've attended in a long time and the staff did a fabulous job making sure everyone's comfort level is being catered to regarding masking and social distancing. I would love to see Kalamazoo go back to hosting at least a couple festivals per month throughout the summer. They always do an incredible job with our local Pride Festival, which did not take place this year due to the huge spike in Covid cases in the region in the spring. My favorite festival was always Taste of Kalamazoo, which I desperately hope will come back at some point. Greek fest was another treasure tradition that folded a few years back. It will be interesting to see how the space evolves as the new complex across the street and gets poised to open up.

It brings in huge names known to layfolk and keyboard enthusiasts alike (Ben Folds, Diana Krall and Bruce Hornsby among them), hosts master classes, free concerts, family concerts, symphony orchestra collaborations and more. The Gilmore also offers Young Artist and Gilmore Artist grants, the latter of which is bestowed every four years and comes with a $300,000 reward.

Gilmore International Keyboard Festival is what comes to most people's mind when they think about Gilmore's legacy, the foundation also supports slews of local art, culture, eduction and wellbeing-focused organizations and non-profits. If it's culture-enriching and in the Kalamazoo area, chances are it's a benefactor of Gilmore grants. I'm so grateful to live in such an arts-rich area, and I know a huge part of that is great local givers like the Gilmore Foundation.
