Don't forget to give the dog belly rubs!

If it's your first time to Molokai you MUST go to the Kalele Bookstore, owned by Auntie Teri. (If you've visited Molokai in the past you've probably already met Teri). My partner and I stopped to look at the dog (R.C.) lounging i the window, and Teri, who was placing some books for sale outside, gave us a cheery "Aloha" and started chatting with us. She is one of the nicest people we have ever met. I feel like she is an "old soul", kind, wise, and willing to share her knowledge, experience, and advice about the island and life in general. One of her goals is to adopt everyone that comes to Molokai, and we definitely felt like we had a relative on the island! On Tuesday she gave us a map of Molokai (much better than any AAA map or the one provided by the car rental company) and wrote all over it, telling us what we should see and do, and who to talk to. She could write a book about the island, but then she wouldn't be able to talk to you about it! On Wednesday there was a rain storm and we took shelter in her store and had coffee with some of the locals and shared stories. On Thursday we met Teri at the Kalaupapa Overlook to watch the sunrise. On Friday we stopped by the store again and chatted for almost an hour, got some advice on life and love, and said goodbye since we were leaving the next day. I realize this review so far is more about the woman and not her shop, but really it's her that makes the shop unique. In the store you will find books, jewelry, pottery, clothes, trinkets, etc. Many of the items are made on Molokai, and she will tell you all about the people who make them. Definitely stop by Auntie Teri's shop before you do anything else on the island, give R.C. a belly rub, and start your vacation off right!

Is this closed? We stopped by 3/30/22 and there was no shop by this name- thanks!

I was wondering this too - does anyone know what happened to this store? It was one of my favorites!

They also have stores at Ka'ahumanu Shopping Center and Old Pu'unene School, near the Sugar Mill. They have been around since 1912 - over 100 years! Their mission is to assist in ensuring our libraries remain free public libraries, promote the extension of library services, secure materials beyond the command of the ordinary library budget, and enrich the cultural opportunities available in our community. This has remained unchanged since the 1950's. Their books are donated to them and are sold at very, very reasonable prices. All of their workers are volunteers and the money they do make is donated to Maui public libraries. How awesome is that? This is definitely something I can get behind and support! This particular location is small, but mighty. Upon walking in, you're welcomed with a collection of Hawaiiana, books rich in history and various aspects of the culture of Hawai'i. They also have cute books for keiki that would make perfect gifts this Christmas. Peruse the aisles and you'll find a variety of used and new books. From cooking to history to biographies and even beautiful vintage books, bibliophiles or anyone that enjoys a good book in hand can find something here. I bought a brand new book ($10) for my niece about Lahaina town and the nice volunteer that rung me up, Walter, mentioned I could any used book for free! My husband also got a few cookbooks and I scored a vintage Betty Crocker Cooky Book from 1963 (I don't bake, but thought it was really cool. lol). They had a buy one get one free special and so ended up only paying a cool $6 for these used books. Total score! Book stores are a dying breed on Maui, but I would highly recommend a stop here. The staff are friendly and very helpful and I just love supporting places like this. Just don't forget to bring CASH, credit cards are not accepted. Happy browsing!

Books are divided into sections such as romance, science fiction, biographies, women, and humor. And a few more that I can't remember. There is also a central focus on Hawaiiana with books on history, tourism, children's section, & recipe books. Staff is friendly and helpful. Since it is a used bookstore, the options change often so I will certainly be back. They USED TO be a "cash only" biz, but started taking credit cards Oct 2022.

Super nostalgic to see a bookstore like this still existing in today's modern time. With the…read moreadaptation of technology and online books I never thought that a store like this would still exist! They had a ton of literature books at every single book and cranny of this store and it was substantial. I saw an old Aesop Fables book that I read when I was younger on the shelves as well - very nostalgic. I'm more of a manga girl so I didn't really see too much nooks that interested me - but if you're really into hardcore literature than this place is definitely it. They had so much books categorized and it felt a bit overwhelming - yet I liked it. I love the smell of books when you walk in, very comforting. I love physical books as well so shops like these are a gem. Had people manning the cashier but mostly just people browsing around enjoying the selection of books. Did not see the price range, but I would assume it is standard in comparison to B&N pricing.

They're all over the place, but there is so much to choose from. The service here is really good unfortunately there was a lady here that tried to use a "" gift certificate that did not work and she was not very polite to the staff The staff handled it really well and they were still polite back, although it made for an uncomfortable experience everybody just carried on, and she proceeded to yell at people behind her as well. Some people just are having a day sometimes. I loved how many things there were to look at I unfortunately had to also think about the fact that I was gonna be flying home with weight but if you're a book lover, definitely stop by and give this place a look at

When Jamie W and I heard that Josh Spencer, the owner of LA's legendary Last Bookstore (review:…read morehttps://yelp.to/PBt2J99ygG) had opened a bookstore in Honolulu, we decided to look for it on our recent Oahu adventure. It turned out to be in Downtown close to Chinatown. While it doesn't have the scale of the Last Bookstore, this store shares some of the unique design elements of its SoCal progenitor like curving shelves and large vinyl collection. A broad scan of the books on display reflects titles that seem more avant garde than more commercial curations with sections devoted to science fiction, horror, true crime, and rock music. Jamie found an existential book about his favorite band called "Queen and Philosophy" (Photo 9), while I bought an intriguing manga cosplay history book called "Otaku Japan" (Photo 5). We probably could've spent another hour in here, but we had manapua on our minds. RELATED - Exploring Hawaii? Here's a collection of places I've visited and reviewed: https://yelp.to/n9JWu5nlzl

The store blends two cultures that often go hand in hand: underground literature and vinyl records. The space itself feels very curated. Instead of a large commercial bookstore layout, the shop has a smaller, more intentional selection of titles and records that reflect niche interests, counterculture themes, and independent publishing. It feels like a place built for people who enjoy digging through shelves to discover something unexpected. One of the highlights is the mix of books and vinyl. The store carries everything from rare or independent books to records that span multiple genres, which creates an environment where music and literature intersect. Browsing through the collection feels more like exploring a curated archive than a traditional retail store. The atmosphere fits well with the Chinatown neighborhood. Bethel Street has a strong creative and artistic identity, and Skull-Face Books & Vinyl contributes to that scene with its alternative aesthetic and independent spirit. What stood out most to me was how personal the shop feels. Independent stores like this often reflect the personality of the people behind them, and that character comes through clearly in the selection and layout. Overall, Skull-Face Books & Vinyl is a great place to explore if you are in Chinatown and enjoy independent bookstores, vinyl records, and creative spaces that feel a little different from mainstream retail shops.
