I thought I had died and gone to heaven when we found this shop. The kites are wonderful, but it is also the sheer wonderland of all the other things. As far as I remember the service was fine and as for the value, how can you put a price on magic? It is almost worth visiting Molokai again just to go there. Jennifer E read more

A cool kite store randomly located next to the post office in Maunaloa. They make the kite here by actually cutting out the applique and sewing them onto the kite and windsocks. There is a wife selection of unique designs, including tropical fish and kites in the shape of ships, which is have never seen before. I happened to visit when Zach was designing a mahi mahi windsock. Ruby, who works here, is also super friendly and will explain various products. Although the kites and windsocks are the reason to come her, they also sell some indonesia knicknacks, beads, jewellery and a few locally made items like potholders and salt. A highlight on Molokai where there's limited shopping! The retail store carries way more options than the etsy store. read more

best kite ever. knowledge and friendly staff. a beautiful area. other gifts besides the kites and wind socks

Made my second trip to Big Wind shortly before COVID-19 locked us all up and down. I was on Molokai to give a presentation, and had time beforehand to take a leisurely (ahh, no cars) morning drive upcountry in Maunaloa. The first time I visited was years ago, when I was still a tourist and not a resident. It was so long ago that the movie theater and KFC were still open. Big Wind survived all these years and through all the closures. It's a bit more tidy and organized than it used to be, but still lovely and quirky. A place to wander and look, not hurry. The main area in front has larger objects such as furniture and household decor on one side, and smaller, more souvenir-type goods on the other side. Just behind it, more retail area has been added that you can wander through. All kinds of goodies for yourself and home, and a good place to buy gifts for all ages. The back room was where the kite manufacturing took place. It was wonderfully messy, colorful, and bright. These days, it's a bit more subdued, with the manufacturing more contained in part of the room, and merchandise such as books in the rest. I had hoped to buy another pair of earrings like the ones I'd bought those many years ago during my first trip. They were small glass jars with cork stoppers on wire hooks. The jars were partially filled with sand from Molokai beaches and other things like tiny shells. When I couldn't find them, I described them to the clerk, but alas, the woman who used to make them no longer did so. I settled on another pair of earrings that can tide me over until my next trip to Big Wind. read more

A beautiful and truly unique store! This was always a priority when I came to visit Moloka'i. Now that I live here I love stopping by now and then to shop local artisan jewelry, t-shirts and other unique gifts. I love the wind socks and purchase them for gifts when I visit friends on the mainland. Everyone loves them! They are very well made with beautiful colors and tropical patterns. A must see place if you visit, and if you can't, many items can be purchased on Etsy! Spread Aloha. read more

I bought a "fish scale" wind sock and I love it! We go it at the Magic Dragon Toy & Art Supply store on Kauai. The "scales" flutter in the breeze and add an extra element I really enjoy. We got the tropical colored one and it fits in at my home perfectly, and reminds us of our magical adventure to Hawai'i! read more

WORTH THE PIT STOP, UNIQUE KITES AND SOUVENIRS Was lured in by the unique colorful front of the store. There are colorful one-of-a-kind kites moving with the breeze. This novelty store has almost everything that you didn't know you need! There are souvenir t-shirts, bracelets, rocks, wooden logic puzzles, and more little trinkets. Hanging above and all around the store also bright-colored, quirky kites of all shapes, types, and sizes. The store owner is very friendly and helpful. We took a look at the wooden logic puzzles, and the owner was very informative about the history and origin of them. Overall he seems very knowledgeable and passionate about the items in his store. I would highly recommend that you make the stop to visit the Big Wind Kite Factory. Definitely worth supporting this small business. Get your unique souvenirs for friends and family here. read more

A very cool shop and something unique to do with the kids on Molokai. The area connected to the shop also has lots of unique items that are hand-painted from Valley as well as wooden jewelry bowls and other Hawaiian items for sale as well. They also have quite a few local and hard to find books for sale. The owner was very nice and even made a mini kite for my youngest son while my oldest boycott a bigger kite. He was very patient and showed us how to roll them up and showed us which ones he actually makes right there in the shop which was cool. I would definitely recommend stopping in if you're looking for a nice kite to fly or just something you need to see and do on Molokai. read more

Arrived just before closing time on a Sunday afternoon, and Jonathan was more than happy to stay open a few more minutes for my mom and me to look around. Thank goodness! This place is truly a gem and we absolutely look back on it as a highlight of our trip to Molokai. The kites made in the back room are truly remarkable. The shop also carries a great selection of unique items; I hesitate to call them "gifts" - while they would make great gifts, calling this place a "gift shop" really doesn't do it justice. If you're lucky enough to meet Jonathan, see if you can get a story or two out of him. We heard some great tales of his life's adventures. Totally want to be him when I grow up. read more

The oddly grumpy-yet-charming store owner has a history to share with all who inquire. He taught my teacher friend how to make paper kites for her class while also trying to sell his online kite kit to her! Lots of cool knick knacks here. I purchased a book of Honolulu detective stories for $8, the price on the back although I'm sure it was a used book. read more

Beautiful shop full of handmade kites and wind socks plus a shop adjacent with many items from Indonesia etc. After talking with owners, I learned they have been traveling to Indonesia since their kids were little (grown now) and buying directly from families there and have forged relationships with them for years. My daughter loved making her own kite too. A must for anyone visiting Molokai. read more

Great family run business. I was so pleased to stop by and visit. A Molokai must visit for their wide selection and friendly staff/family.

Super-charming!! A lovely, polite woman manned the counter and there was an outrageously good and large supply of souvenirs, kites and tchochkes. It's a big store. The town that it is in is probably the quietest place you will even step foot into that is still inhabited, which only adds to the overall charm of coming here. We enjoyed stopping in. read more

You must stop by the shop if you are on the Molokai Island. The creative kites are remarkable and fascinating. The shop owners are so friendly and will help you get the kite ready to take home. It is worth the stop just to see how creative kites can be. There are other creative gift items also. Kites from this maker can also be found at the Blue Monkey gift shop (operated by their son). read more
