I called a childhood family friend of mine who is a prominent lawyer in San Francisco. He was working on a homicide case at the time and wasn't taking on new clients, however he met with me, and reviewed my case. His colleague, Sarah Potter, attended the meeting. I brought a picture of my daughter...I was in shock to say the least. Sarah was professional and made me feel at ease. I felt she was present, intelligent and truly cared about my predicament. She was positive and knowledgeable. Just meeting with her gave me hope. I hired Sarah. She offered both a flat fee, and an hourly rate. I chose the flat fee. I was looking at 6 charges, some of which were felony charges. Criminal charges that were astronomically overly exaggerated. I was in a non-violent verbal argument with my husband and the police department made it look as if I was a hardened criminal and danger to society. Moving forward, my husband, Mom, and Sarah became my team to support me in the ways that they could best. On the day of my arraignment I was terrified. The days leading to the arraignment I called and text Sarah any detail or fear that came to my mind. She was ALWAYS available (promptly calling me back when she couldn't answer) and patient. This part impressed me and my family, and was the moment I had no doubt that we were in good hands: As soon as they opened the doors Sarah walked straight to the DA and discussed my case. She was confident but not arrogant. my case was called up immediately. I was also dressed impeccably (I suggest always doing this when in a court room). Sarah pointed out the obvious; I was a good citizen, my husband was present and absolutely behind me and the circumstances were tragic. She pointed out that my Husband and I are grieving and attending therapy for our grief. We were learning how to cope in the wake of the most life shattering experience that anybody could ever go through. Some of the charges were reduced, a restraining order wasn't pursued...to be honest the DA tried to argue something and just seemed caught off guard and defeated because Sarah was assertive, precise and carried herself with the upmost class. She knows what she is doing and she knows she knows. That goes a long way when the DA is overwhelmed with too many cases that are represented by unprofessional lawyers, public attorneys or non-represented, and often, repeat offenders. Most DA's would be a bit hesitant (and even somewhat intimidated in my case) by a top-notch lawyer like Sarah Potter. Again, I want to emphasize that I was also professional in demeanor and appearance and brought with me key people that were also prepared to back me in every way the could. I had a team, and thank god we had Sarah leading us. The next court date was even more successful. Sarah had contacted the head DA of domestic crimes in my county. She had a phone conversation with him. She explained my situation and how this was just a big mess and that nobody wants to see a grieving mom suffering more. I am no criminal and sometimes when one is arrested, unfortunately, the police department brings charges that are so far-fetched and unfair against you just hoping something will stick. The system is a mess but Sarah was organized direct and efficient. By the second court date EVERY charge was dropped. She showed up and once again walked straight up to the DA, my case was called up first, and she told them how my case was going to be completely resolved.
